Expertly co-authored by fashion historian and consultant Florence Muller and haute couture costume jewelry collector Patrick Sigal, "Costume Jewelry For Haute Couture" is a profusely illustrated compendium showcasing dazzling, one-of-a-kind jewelry designed by skilled artisans to complement and adorn individual couture pieces for fashion shows and photo shoots. I've been keeping an eye on 'high fashion' for 25+ years as my own one-of-a-kind bead & jewelry business evolved. I could never figure out why some of the very unusual and creative jewelry I saw in couture and pret-a-porte' runway shows was rarely covered in detail in the fashion books or magazines. Finally this book was created to begin answering my prayers! Bravo - I love it, get lost in it!
While I love all kinds of jewelry, I'd gotten my fill of the books featuring more traditional gold/diamond-type jewelry! If you like the more unusual side of the universe, then you will treasure this book.... and I say all of this before I've even studied the text!
I hope publishers will pay attention and give us more, more, more! This is the tip of the iceberg and I'm delighted.

One of the best vehicle perspective books

Review Date: 2008-03-05
I bought this book solely because Scott Robertson wrote it. Normally I would have passed this book by thinking it was a children's book on drawing hotwheels. Boy was I surprised when I received it.

This is not as much a book on drawing cars but a book explaining how to use perspective when drawing vehicles which could be used for all types of vehicles. I've read many books on perspective and this one has been the most well developed instruction on vehicle perspective. His instructions are very detailed with great illustrations for each step. And we're not talking about glossed over quick 3 step instructions, most instructions are over 10 steps. So he goes slow with enough detail to not miss anything necessary to truly understand this topic.

Another bonus, is that he explains in detail how to render with various art media and also step by step how to render in Photoshop. These instructions are as detailed as that for drawing in perspective.

This book was a Great Surprise! I wish I had found it earlier. I probably could have forgone many books for what I've found in this one. Don't let the name fool you, pick this book up no matter what level of artist, illustrator, cartoonist or designer you are. Great book!!! 5 Stars.

The minute this book arrived and I saw how great it was I realized that I would need to give it as a gift to a designer friend. Then I needed to order another copy to keep for myself. If you are a designer, want to draw cars, or are just a fan of Hot Wheels cars, Scott Robertson's book is a wonderful insight into the world of unlimited transportation imagination. Kids of ALL AGES would love this book!

Craig Schenning has done a great job of identifying Indiana Glass patterns, including information on dates of production, colors, and lists of known pieces with current prices. Also included are several patterns originally produced by other companies but whose molds are known to have been acquired (and produced) by Indiana in later years. Lots of good color photos, although you may have to look elsewhere to identify etchings and decorations. The best book I've seen on Indiana glassware.

Hopefully, this will educate old and new collectors about the wonderful glass they created. I can't wait to see more from this author.

Horrible translation.
Lost parts of sentences. Some are repeated.
Spelling errors.
Sometimes - incorrect information.
Almost nothing new.
Some nice photos.

So, let me advise to look for some other source of the information.

Books about Double Rifles are usually expensive and difficult to obtain. This book is neither. I found it to be a beautifully illustrated book and clearly the author has researched his subject.
My one critisism of this volume is, I feel, that much has been lost in the translation from the original German to English. Some of the terminology has been simplified and it shows. Perhaps a proof reader with a knowledge of firearms and whose native tongue is english could have corrected passages which have been over simplified.
If you are looking for a more detailed overview of double rifles and their quirks, actions and history then Christopher Austyns trilogy is probably already in your bookcase.
This is a minor quibble, if you like Double Rifles then this book is a worthwhile purchase even if only for the wonderful photos.

A GOOD READ

This book is quite a good read, though I felt it was missing some information in certain areas, it seemed to cover a great deal of important material. Perhaps I am just expecting too much. As books on the subject of double rifles go, this one is right up there... top shelf.

Although I am not finished reading this book, I am very pleased with the content so far. This book goes into very good detail with good quality pictures. I was looking for a book to assist me in the purchase of an M1, and I feel more comfortable in my quest now that I am much more educated on the specifics of differant models and details purtaining to certain years and serial numbers as pointed out in this book. The content may be a little to detail oriented for the reader that is just trying to gain the history of this weapon, but for the reader looking to learn the "nuts and bolts" of this gun, I would highly recommend this guide.

Incomplete and dry

Review Date: 2004-05-10
As a collector of U.S. military rifles, I decided
to purchase this book. I found the carbine information
helpful, if a little confusing, and incomplete in
regard to some of the later developments, and there
is NOTHING in here at all helpful about ammo.

I have ALL the M1 books, though. And this area
is where Canfield sort of falls apart and becomes
irrelevant. He completely poo-poohs the Italian
Breda and Beretta rifles, does not explore the
rebuilds or much of the postwar history, does not
mention civilian developments at all, and
badmouths the "import rifles"...which pretty much
means what today's shooters and collectors can
actually get is skipped COMPLETELY.

And a lot of the photos, while pretty good, are not
completely explained. In point of fact, there is
some good material here, but not much of it, and
it is all incomplete.

Any of Bruce Canfield's books are worth reading!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-03
Bruce Canfield's books are always worthwhile reading for the interested student of history: he always explains the development and technical details of the firearm under review within its historical context, never slacking in detail yet somehow never getting bogged down in minutiae.

If you don't already have _War Baby_ and are interested in the M1 Carbine, this is a worthwhile book; if you already own _WB_ or are planning on getting it and are uninterested in the M1 Garand rifle, you would be better off saving your money & spending it on _War Baby_, which focuses exclusively on the M1 Carbine. I have read _War Baby_ and found the section on the Carbine in Canfield's book to be (understandably) inadequate in comparison, but wholly enjoyable and complete in its own right if not already familiar with the extensive and absolutely thorough coverage provided on the subject by _War Baby_.

Any fan of the Garand rifle is well-served by adding this title to his personal library. That said: I really wish that this title was offered as part of a compendium with Bruce Canfield's _Johnson Rifle_, as that other book is rather pricey in comparison; if the two were combined at the present price of his book on the Johnson rifle, it would be a no-brainer to buy it, offering as it would a fairly comprehensive look at the long arms developed and used by the U.S. immediately prior & during World War II. Something the publisher should consider, as I imagine sales of the book on the Johnson rifle are handicapped by it's high price, while this book is not as thorough as others devoted exclusively to their single topical long arm and hence could benefit from the addition of the added material on the Johnson rifle which competed with the Garand for political favor...

Collectors Must Have Book

I found this book to be just what I was looking for in a Reference/History book. Bruce Canfield must have had the average military collector in mind when he wrote this work. He has updated the original text and the clarity of the pictures is excellent. It has helped answer some of the questions that I had about my M1 Garand. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR COLLECTORS.

This book is NOT the Ultimate Barbie Doll Book. I could not find a single collectible Barbie Doll which I posses from the years it describes it covers when I purchased it. Description of the dolls covered should really be more detailed for collectors who are new to the industry. In addition, there is no option to select from Amazon if the item described does not meet your needs, you simply get a refund, minus shipping as a user error...Not too fair in my opinion.

I mainly purchased this book to remember some of my childhood toys- I wasn't expecting the detail and page after page of pictures that made me interested in collecting Barbie's as well-

This thick hardcover book has colored photos of each Barbie both in the box and then a close up of the face. The Barbies are presented in chronological order by year by doll type- so i.e. Barbie from 1950s til 90s then Skipper from 50s-90s, then Ken, etc.

The book also has friends of the infamous Barbie and Ken couple; many of which I have never seen or heard of!

If you are looking for a nice photo array and price guide of Barbie and Friends. Truly the "Ultimate" Barbie book.

This is a great reference book, full of details and history about evolution of Matchbox toys. If you love Matchbox, this is a must. Charlie Mack is a true expert on the subject, and this is for sure the most complete and updated information about the subject. The only complains are: cover picture is not representative at all. Pictures are excelent but could be larger for the "reg. wheels" and "miniatures", and several rare cars and boxes are ommited (no space probably). However, "Tomart's Price Guide for Hot Wheels" have a much better and contemporary graphic design and many more pictures in a smaller book, and also with more description of individual models.

1st Edition is Better
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-16
As the owner of both the 1997 1st edition and this newer 2004 3rd edition, I am disapointed. In order to fit 7 years of new photos into the same size book, the photos were digitally shrunk and subsequently distorted and blurred. But worse, the 1st edition had 198 pages of photos, the 3rd edition has just 159 pages of photos. Bottom line, this makes the photos tiny, blurred and distorted. Also, the paper stock (thickness) was significantly reduced so although the newer edition has just seven more total pages, the first edition is significantly thicker and heavier. So if you do not collect Mattel Matchbox, purchase the 1st edition (also it does not appear the prices between the 1997 and the 2004 price guide have changed). By the way, the 1st edition is a great book!

An OK anthology of pictures of vintage accessories
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-28
This book follows the current trend in vintage clothing books, in that it consists of photos of items belonging to one collector, presented as an identification and price guide. There are brief captions and a little explanatory text. The author has photographed her items flat or on stands, thus avoiding the jarring effect created in some other books by the use of very modern-looking live models. Most of the items represent everyday, easily purchasable vintage accessories rather than spectacular or rare collectibles. There are also many black-and-white period advertising pictures, possibly to atone for the relatively small number of pre-1900 items photographed from the collection. The prices (unfortunately!) seem low for the current market, and I found no indication of how they were derived. Unlike some other books, most of the time the author avoids gushing about her collection. However, she does follow the current trend of giving comparatively little practical information on how to restore and use vintage accessories (which many collectors want to do), on the grounds that they are "too precious." In fact, most of the items pictured in her book could be worn and enjoyed without much risk of damage.

This book is the generous sharing of Ms.Johnson's passion of 25 years - the collecting of vintage clothing and accessories. With overviews of all of a woman's favorite accessories, the book can easily serve as a basic primer for those with a new-found interest in vintage pieces. The information on documentation, age determination, and worth accessment is both helpful and inspirational. The numerous close-up photos of a wide variety of accessories, along with drawings, illustrations, and ads from old periodicals will delight both new and experienced collectors, as well as those simply interested in the past - for fashion, as always, tells us much about culture. Ladies' Vintage Accessories is written in a personable style and is full of both information and food for thought. Highly Recommended.

LaRee Johnson-Burton's book, Ladies Vintage Accessories, is outstanding. The photographs were stunning, and the information imparted about the value and description of the collection was exceedingly valuable. Quite frankly, I feel this book is a must-have, not only for the serious collector of vintage accessories and garments, but for writers of historical fiction, who can use this guide to bring them back in time and make certain that their characters are properly adorned. From cobalt blue Victorian parasols to 1920 gold mesh bags, this is a valuable and beautiful crafted book, packaged impeccably by Collector Books, and written by an author/collector who is clearly knowledgeable and passionate about her field. --Karen Plunkett-Powell, author, Remembering Woolworth's
