I just got this book today ... I have been on the edge of buying it for about a year and lo and behold my stinginess on price paid off! I love this book the quality of the work contained within is fantastic, and the jacket outside done by our friends at ATTIK design is just wonderful. A must by especially at the price! ... quick go get it!!!

One of Attik's masterpiece

Typography 21 is a original and creative book. The content inside were very inspirational to me, as a graphic designer. It has a variety of designs, so it should satisfy your eyes.

I thought that the page designs by Attik were much better than the works they reviewed. It was a good book, but not the best.

I am thinking of getting NoiseFour by Attik next.

Check this book out. I'm sure a bunch of designers already have their copy. I initially bought for the fact that ATTIK designed it. Some cool work but the book as a whole is a comprehensive look at contemporary typography. Some really great pieces. One for the collection...

This book is beautiful. I have just got it 20 minutes ago and went through some of the pages and all I had to say was.. wow. Inspiring. In my opinion the cover is inspiring enough. Never seen anything like this... Next, I will probbably get 72 dpi.

I don't buy many design books because many of them tend to blur together and look the same after a while. What I really like about 'Typography 21' is that it is an 'annual' for design across many mediums. There is a nice introduction about the jurors and it showcases some of their work, to give you a sense of their backgrounds and then gets right into the work. It is a great source of reference for many needs.

The book itself it very beautiful and if you think the book-jacket is pretty, wait until you see what's underneath it.

Is it any surprise that Imaginary Forces practically owns the motion-graphics category???

I really like this book.

Architectural style wars are about more than style...
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-13
...as Watkin points out in this thoughtful volume, architecture has content beyond simply how it looks or how it works. He points out that throughout recent history, architectural historians have used their own critical work to justify whatever style they happen to be most fond of as being the only "real," "true," "authentic," and hence, moral architectre. The transparency of this self-fulfilling prophecy becomes clear as architecture transitions into Modernism, which was vigorously promoted by its adherents. Watkins interesting historical perspective is beneficial to anyone who's wondered who decides what architectural style or form is "more right." While this whole discussion may strike you as intramural and arcane, I assure you that it is not, as we live every day (and for succeeding decades) with the results of these stylistic tugs-of-war. Recommended reading for architecture buffs as well as architects.

Good Lighthouse Coffee Table Book

Review Date: 2000-08-08
This is a large coffee table book with appropriately stunning photos of lighthouses from around the world. F. Ross Holland is one of the most informed writers on lighthouses and he provides plenty of easy reading history to go with the pictures. An informative and visually satisfying book for lighthouse lovers.

Another Great F. Ross Holland book

F.Ross Holland begins with a few world lights-of-old in drawings. From there the photography captures lighthouses from the British Isles to the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii. Lights from Canada are here, as well as some from the Carribean. Many of the beautiful photos of today are accompanied by historical images. But this is not a mere picture book; there's plenty of stories and historical information. It's a great addition to any lighthouse lover's library!

Beautiful book with tons of history

Not easy to follow
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-29
This is the catalogue for an exhibition held in Monaco in 2006 which had the ambition of covering everything that New York produced in the visual arts since the fifties (architecture, cinema, photography, sculpture and painting). The result, albeit impressive by the weight of the book and the quality of the illustrations, is a little difficult to follow, no surprise for this overly ambitious endeavour. Divided into two chronological parts, 1950-1975 and 1975-2000, it sometimes resembles an auction catalogue from Sotheby's and Christie's, with all the big names of Abstract Expressionism (Rothko, Newman, Pollock, De Kooning...), Minimalism (Carl Andre, Donald Judd...)and the avant-garde (Gober,Prince, Wool...), all appearing one by one. The checklist at the end does not really help to dissipate this first impression and is sometimes difficult to link to the illustrations.

A book undoubtedly destined to become a collector's piece because of its topic and also because of the quality of the texts (written by Germano Celant, Robert Rosenblum, Nancy Spector, among others), its organization is debatable and does not make for easy reading.

This is a great book for a college class or coffee table. I was needing something to help me design a home for today. I took the recommendation from an architect but it did not relly give me enough practical info.

Excellent residential design process reference. Maybe best.

Ever since its arrival in the mid-1970's as a reference for architecture students and professionals alike, this book has been one of the finest references, also, for budding homeowners as well. It places into beautiful perspective the almost anatomical linkage between large and small scale; neighborhood, house and room. It further discusses, eloquently, the relationship -- the emotional relationship -- between architecture and its users. Moore, et al, uses examples of old American neighborhoods, discussing the evolutionary nature of their success, contrasting it with the tragic results of uneducated development in suburban sprawls. If I sustain one distant criticism, it is that Moore slightly overdid the use of his own design examples which, though helpful, present less variety in style than would have been helpful to the central point of the book. But let there be no doubt, this is quite a little gem for *anyone* interested in what makes for exquisite personal residential lives. It is timeless in its core content.

Excellent

Primarily concerned with the design of residences that are appropriate to their settings. Lots of photos of Moore's houses

Photographs To Exercise The Mind
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-11
Professor Borowiec's photographs are like little delicious desserts for the brain. Each one is to be savored and almost every one of them gave my imagination a complete workout. The photographs of houses and streets made my mind say "Who lives here?", "What is around the corner?", "What would it be like to live here?" "What would I experience looking out of the window of the house on the hill?". I wanted to jump into the photographs to experience the whole body mood and feeling of them. Anyone who likes to study a photograph thoroughly to gain everything it has to offer will love this book. A wonderful experience. Thank you Professor Borowiec!
