This is a large coffee table book with appropriately stunning photos of lighthouses from around the world. F. Ross Holland is one of the most informed writers on lighthouses and he provides plenty of easy reading history to go with the pictures. An informative and visually satisfying book for lighthouse lovers.

Another Great F. Ross Holland book

F.Ross Holland begins with a few world lights-of-old in drawings. From there the photography captures lighthouses from the British Isles to the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii. Lights from Canada are here, as well as some from the Carribean. Many of the beautiful photos of today are accompanied by historical images. But this is not a mere picture book; there's plenty of stories and historical information. It's a great addition to any lighthouse lover's library!

Beautiful book with tons of history

In appreciation of natural beauty

It can be hard for American public to embrace Saudek's art. You are so used to aibrushed, silicon-pumped, malnurished, shaved, bleached or otherwise "improved" women. In this, as in his other books, Saudek shows beauty & femininity unadorned. He is a genius & a bold man that refuses to follow the current trend of enhanced beauty. How refreshing in an abundant photographic deluge of perfected, smooth, unreal bodies. Plus we women do not come in sepia tones either. Abundand color makes us all so much more alive. Hurrah for femininity with a big F. Jump in into Saudek's book for a visual feast.

Love and obsession

My first viewing of Saudek's work was in the 1970's at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne Australia. On display were also the painstakingly beautiful hand-decorated envelopes that had contained his correspondence with the curator of photography. The envelopes confirmed the depths of Saudek's passion for his work and his conviction that he is showing us some of the most beautiful sights we will ever see.

Of course that is a judgement for the viewer, but the depth of sentiment here is undeniable, whether you see these fleshy images as overwhelming kitsch or as acts of love. At least one of his images you will have seen reproduced by countless other photographers ad nauseam - a monochrome photograph masculine arms clasping the naked body of a baby. That Saudek was probably the first to produce this image (significantly, in 1968) is an illustration of his originality and boldness - it was an image that dared to illustrate the 'feminine' side of men. The body of his work continues to be a barefaced provocation for those sensitive to the politically correct or the current media stereotype of the ideal body. It challenges those for whom sexuality and old age, or childhood, should be not seen together. Yes, he peers dangerously into the murk of pornography, but his luscious hand-coloured images emerge unscathed, full of honest sentimentality and an infectious sense of delight.I think the fact that my University's Library copy of this book was withdrawn from the collection due to the number of pages removed by readers is tribute enough!

This is an appropriately sumptuous book in its reproduction of Saudek's work, but with not nearly enough critical or biographical support in the text.

This is a great book for a college class or coffee table. I was needing something to help me design a home for today. I took the recommendation from an architect but it did not relly give me enough practical info.

Excellent residential design process reference. Maybe best.

Ever since its arrival in the mid-1970's as a reference for architecture students and professionals alike, this book has been one of the finest references, also, for budding homeowners as well. It places into beautiful perspective the almost anatomical linkage between large and small scale; neighborhood, house and room. It further discusses, eloquently, the relationship -- the emotional relationship -- between architecture and its users. Moore, et al, uses examples of old American neighborhoods, discussing the evolutionary nature of their success, contrasting it with the tragic results of uneducated development in suburban sprawls. If I sustain one distant criticism, it is that Moore slightly overdid the use of his own design examples which, though helpful, present less variety in style than would have been helpful to the central point of the book. But let there be no doubt, this is quite a little gem for *anyone* interested in what makes for exquisite personal residential lives. It is timeless in its core content.

Photographs To Exercise The Mind

Professor Borowiec's photographs are like little delicious desserts for the brain. Each one is to be savored and almost every one of them gave my imagination a complete workout. The photographs of houses and streets made my mind say "Who lives here?", "What is around the corner?", "What would it be like to live here?" "What would I experience looking out of the window of the house on the hill?". I wanted to jump into the photographs to experience the whole body mood and feeling of them. Anyone who likes to study a photograph thoroughly to gain everything it has to offer will love this book. A wonderful experience. Thank you Professor Borowiec!

This is a brilliant insight into the wonderful world of art by the a number of great writers. From the excellently edited magazine, Modern Painters, this book takes "the best bits," displayed beautifully with exquisite pictures. a MUST for anyone this Christmas.

Top-drawer volume........

These essays DO present a fresh perspective to art and artists--much of the pedantry and obfuscation so common in dialogues on art is absent here. As well, Mr. Burnett's editing, crisp and elegant, contributes greatly to a fine volume. Highly recommended.......... a must.

EDIFICATION AND ENTERTAINMENT

Puzzled by modern art? Bored by art criticism? Then "Writers On Artists" is the book for you. This unique collection of modern art works accompanied by essays by contemporary writers is a colorful feast for the eyes in every way.

Just as each writer may take a distinctly different view of modern art, every contributor is sincere in bringing modern art to the many who find it remote or incomprehensible.

With 350 full-color reproductions as well as portraits of the artists and writers this stimulating and challenging volume provokes discussion just as it provides entertainment. Reading Will Self's take on outre Damien Hirst makes art fun.

Author Howard Jacobson takes on Andy Warhol, and Germain Greer extols the virtues of Portugese artist Paula Rego. Noted British author Julian Barnes finds challenges and implicit questions in the paintings of Edgar Degas.

And so it goes in "Writers On Artists," a fantastic journey through the works of artists guided by the writers' pens.

I really enjoyed learning more about art and artists from these writers. They approach the artists from a neutral place, they ask fresh questions - often revealing a lot about themselves in the process and they obviously want to learn about the art rather than judge it. Excellent reading.
