I bought this set a couple of months ago and I have listened to all 4 CDs.
Every CD places something good back into your life by reviewing past lives, breaking neg patterns, or visualizing what you want. Doreens voice is very soothing and calming. While I have had issues in the past with going into a hypnotic state with guided meditations, Doreens voice set my mind at ease. I don't believe anyone who chooses to buy this set will be disappointed.

This is a set of five instruction cds on the process of meditation, not a meditation cd. Contains five one hour (approximate)sessions, each building on the last, with a short meditation time included. For those looking not for guided mediation but for instruction on "fully awake" meditation, this is perfect. As is everything that Pema Chodron does. Great value for the money.
The title is somewhat misleading

I am new to meditation and thought that a CD set with a title of "How to Meditate" would be a good choice to learn. Not with this set. This was recorded at a 5 week retreat, so most people there would know something about meditation. And this knowledge shows in how the teacher speaks. There are postures and other terms used that a new person, like myself, would not know. Some are described, but "like this" does not help when listening to a CD. If you know how to meditate this maybe good to further your meditations. But if you are new, start somewhere else.
Great CD - But, know what you're buying

Pema Chodron is a wonderful teacher, of whom I have the greatest respect. This is another example of her down-to-earth, humorous and loving teaching style. For me, it was an excellent choice. However, just so you are not disappointed, be aware this is a specific type of meditation. She is teaching Tibetan Buddhist meditation techniques, which are a little different from other styles. In this style your eyes remain partly open to maintain a level of awareness. It is not the type you use to generate a trance state.
If you are unfamiliar with meditation and this is your first exploration, you may want to look at "The Art of Meditation by Daniel Goleman". It is an excellent first step.
Pema's training can take you to a deeper level of understanding, but may be a little too deep for your first attempt. Also, the fact her CD is speaking to those who have a background in Buddhism does'nt mean you won't learn from this CD. Buddhist are experts at meditation because it is part of their belief. The techniques taught can apply to any faith.
Pema's Chodron is an excellent speaker and this is another excellent example of her work. With the understanding that I would not advise this as the first meditation book I would read/listen to, I believe it is a valuable resource for those interested in this style of meditation.

In this 5 CD set, Pema Chodron expands on her prior works (but see Pure Meditation), honing in on Buddhist Shamatha (tranquil or calm abiding) meditation. This is a basic, eyes-open, being-fully-present technique (akin to mindfulness practice). It differs greatly from transcendental types as well as from Vipashyana (insight) meditation. Total time=5:52:48 in 46 tracks (CD1=65:18/9 tracks; CD2=63:29/10 tracks; CD3=69:54/9 tracks; CD4=74:53/9 tracks; CD5=79:14/tracks). Her presentation is comprehensive, including: Physical--much detail on 6 points of posture (seat, legs, torso, hands, eyes, & mouth); Emotional--being fully present, attention to tension, observing your pain/stress; Mental/Psychological--generosity, patience, sense of humor; & Spiritual/Mystical--(per Trungpa Rinpoche) "Mixing mind and space." Each CD includes a meditation experience & practices for the ensuing week.
Ani Chodron explains the basic Tibetan Buddhist/Vajrayana approach of transforming poisons (kleshas or afflictions) into medicine (wisdom/enlightenment). This is similar to judo (vs. karate) & to transcendental alchemy (The Secret of the Golden Flower: A Chinese Book of Life) with kleshas being the prima materia. Tibetans differentiate between pain and suffering; the latter being more psychological than physical--reaction to pain vs. pain itself. She, thus explores Shenpa, the process of getting hooked--see Don't Bite the Hook: Finding Freedom from Anger, Resentment, and Other Destructive Emotions. Pema also briefly discusses Tonglen (exchanging oneself for others), a highly empathetic technique--see Tonglen, the Path of Transformation or Good Medicine: How to Turn Pain into Compassion with Tonglen Meditation; & includes some more advanced Mahamudra meditation, which I find particularly helpful, quoting a poet: "Thoughts are like clouds in the sky; they shimmer when they fly." Her use of sounds, sights, touch over the body is reminiscent of both the Western allover (or overall) exercise (Wisdom of the Mystic Masters) & the Dhyani Buddha families (The Mandala of the Enlightened Feminine). Overall, Pema's voice & presentation are extremely peaceful & meditative--quite conducive to these practices, though she aims at you becoming "your own meditation instructor." To have a more complete appreciation of Pema, see her Good Medicine video. This set is valuable for newbies (though some of the terminology may be unfamiliar) as well as those who have practiced meditation before. It is also a nice refresher.

I have read a few of her other books, and what appeals so much to me about Pema is how human she is. She has been doing this for many, many years and she still experiences the shortfalls that I experience trying to make time to sit with myself and meditate for the last 8 years. If you are new to the path of meditation or think you know what you are doing-get this book.

The product is a wonderful value and saved our vacation. Please note that this is an introductory course and is not comprehensive by any means. We were told that most everyone in Germany spoke English but found many uncomfortable to do so. This product gave me enough German to convey my wants and desires. The lessons are easy to follow and teach by hearing and speaking. I was able to review all the material in two weeks and got many compliments on how well I sopke the language. This product would be helped greatly by some written material for back up. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase and heartily recommend it to any beginner.

Fairly solid grounding in beginning German; strong on pronunciation but short on vocabulary. And possessed of some very strange interchanges. You ask Frau Meyer if she wants some wine. She does. Then you ask her if she also wants a beer, as apparently she's either an alcoholic or you're trying to get her looped. So while you learn a little bit of German very well, it doesn't quite build enough vocabulary to have a conversation much beyond "I know a little German but I don't speak it well." And you'll sound like you're kidding when you say it with such good pronunciation, rendering the phrase almost useless.

(4.5 stars) I have mixed feelings about this CD, because I think it's brilliant and empowering, yet there are aspects of it that scare me. That's probably something that is just part of my own personal progress, because I must say that this CD has helped me leaps and bounds in dealing with my anger issues. Working with the visualizations on this CD have made me feel more in control of my anger and that's good. I also feel more empowered, knowing that these issues are arising for a reason and that I need to let them go. But the part of the visualization process that is tricky for me is the idea of "disintegrating" the people who are upsetting me. There's just something a little too... intense about that for me. I know Louise's point is that anger can be so destructive, and as she says, "That's really not the way you want to be." I realize that this part of the process is there to help us feel all powerful over the people who are making us angry, and to destroy that ugly energy that we feel is attacking us. However, for my peace of mind, I find it best to make this section of the exercise like I'm at a carnival, shooting tin "bad guy" versions of these people that have hurt me. It seems to help.
And then there is the all important forgiveness section which is really empowering and enlightening. Louise guides the visualization to see the inner pain of that other person, to see where they're coming from, and while that might not seem like something you'd like to take into consideration since you're angry with this person, because you've been able to vent your anger with this person in the first part of the exercise, this last "forgiveness cycle" really seems to affirm your safety, strength, empowerment, and it opens the mind.
I'm still working with this CD and it truly has been a life-saver in many situations. Getting the anger out in ways that are safe for ourselves and others is truly a helpful experience.
Good luck with your journey!

This short (34 minute) mental health exercise is ideal for releasing stress, anger, pain and general bloody-mindedness. Tried it once and had that feelgood tingle for the next several days. Will try it once every week - and it beats popping a pill!
But beware...enter into this type of mental gymnastic with a totally open mind and leave the ego at the front door.
Excellent self-help.

It's undisputed that Steinbeck's novel is a gem of its own rights. Add to that Gary Sinise, a great actor who very obviously has a soft spot for this particular book (Gary Sinise has done Of Mice And Men on stage as well as for the movies) and it's magic that is created.
One man's voice turns from narrating to snarky to hatefilled to sad with a burden too heavy to carry in the span of moments. It's a brilliant interpretation Gary Sinise is delivering. I couldn't stop listening and was carried to a place where sycamore leaves were rustling under my feet. Amazing!

My good mate John at Matilda's book store in Mount Waverley loaned me this audio book and I was totally mesmerized by it. I always knew that Gary Sinise was a great actor but I had no idea of just how good a book narrator he is. He recites all of the character voices himself and you would swear that there must be different people speaking, such is his mastery of the English Language, dialect and enunciation. I listened to this book through my stereo headphones and it was like Mr. Sinise was in the room with me reading this book aloud. A true masterpiece and thanks a lot John for this audio book.I think you have great taste in Literature.

After the reviews I read I thought for sure this book would be a cure-all for the problems with my 3 year old. Unfortunately, many of the examples set & ideas to follow are aimed at older kids, and are mostly common-sense. I would still recommend this book to anyone with kids older than 6, and anyone lacking common sense in raising your kids.

Dr. Leman deals a dose of practical parenting advice I knowo I needed to read. In Have a New Kind by Friday, you will get the real scoop on how to change you kids' behavior instantly with actions, not words.
Most of all, you will learn that their behavior has a purpose, and that if you can stay emotionaly distant from the anger you may feel, you can handle just about any issue you may face.
As a mom of 4 ages 12 to 5, I needed this book! I was doing some things right, but like all parents, I needed some help as well. And this book was just the shot in the arm I needed to get it right.
I encourage you to get a copy of Have a New Kid by Friday now - Don't wait! Your kids are counting on you.

I recently saw Dr. Kevin Leman on Fox and Friends and I immediately went out and bought Have A New Kid By Friday. After reading this book, the whole atmosphere in my house has changed. I used to have kids who were disrespectful, and mouthy, but now I have kids who listen to me-- I almost fell over the other day when my son asked me what he could do to help.
I liked the book so much that I am buying a few extra copies for my friends and family. And I am also purchasing Dr. Leman's Birth Order Book.
This is a book for any parent.

This book is excellent for younger kids. For older kids 12-18, I like the following two books. The Edge Effect: Achieve Total Health and Longevity with the Balanced Brain Advantage and Don't Like to Read, Then Don't, Listen!: How to Turn Any Type of Text Into Audio Files That Can Be Read to You!

What a letdown! Listen, if you think your kids are "hedonistic little suckers," then maybe this book is right for you. There is very little content; it's the informational equivalent of junk food from McDonalds. An example of the kind of advice you'll get: if you ask your child to take out the trash and they forget, then let them guess why you won't take them to the store sometime in the future. The Guess Why I'm Not Happy Technique has never worked with my dear husband; why would anyone expect it to work with a child? I wouldn't call that Assertive Parenting, would you? I'd call that Passive-Agressive parenting, and who needs a book for that?

I don't read nearly as much as I should so when my wife suggested audio books for our weekly trips to the cottage I was all for it. Don't get me wrong I love music and could listen to classic rock to the moon and back but I'm also a fan of good stories. Much to my surprise a good book keeps me awake while driving. This past weekend I picked the book and it was "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein. I picked it because it is told from the point of view of Enzo the lab-terrier mix. Everyone who knows me and knows my dog knows I love dogs. It is the dogs last day and he is reflecting on his life as the pet of Denny Swift a customer service guy at a BMW dealership and part-time race car driver who treats him like a son. Enzo grows up watching TV but good stuff like Discovery & the Weather Channel. Enzo adapts to changes in Denny's life like him getting married to Eve and then welcoming an addition in the form of their daughter Zoƫ. Enzo learns all about auto racing and the lessons apply not only to racing but to life itself, even the life of a dog. But then bad things happen to good people and you get so wrapped up in this story that you start to feel as though it is happening to someone you know, the family next door or a relative in a nearby state. This book evokes real emotions in the reader or in this case the listener. I felt joy, sadness, anger and genuine humor to the "laugh out loud" state. I recommend this with 5 stars. It should be made into a movie. We got about 2/3 done on the way to the cottage and I was happy to return home just to listen to the rest...
A Good Book!!

My mother used to read me this story as a kid. I always liked it. As I got older, I began to appreciate it even more for its subtle humor. The story is unique and the illustrations should really be admired. I just bought it for my 2 year old and she seems to enjoy it as well. I highly recommend it.

Ferdinand is a bull who listens to his own heart. He does not bow to 'peer pressure' and try to be someone he is not. The story is not really about bull-fighting, but about self-acceptance and the acceptance of others for whom they are -- even when initial expectations are not met.

I completely forgot about this book until one of my students had me read it. Such a classic with an important message about staying true to yourself even if you are off the beaten path. The Spanish culture and charming illustrations only make this all the more likeable.

What a lovely classical story of peace. Ferdinand is a peaceful bull who loves to lie in the meadow and smell flowers. He gets stung by a bee at exactly the wrong moment (when the bullfighters are coming to pick a bull to take to the fights). So he is, of course, carted off to fight, since he is obviously the feistiest bull in the field. When he gets to the ring, no matter how mean the bullfighters are to him, Ferdinand just lies down and smells the flowers on the ladies' hats. This is such a beautiful story of peace and hope. Even though bullfighting is not promoted or accepted in the U.S., I think this is a beautiful classic story and I do recommend it for all ages.

the book and the cd were in good shape and the story was
similar to the one i knew when i was a child but not the
same. i was looking for a copy of the one i knew in the
early 50's, it was fun to listen to and it was funny.
there is another story of the flying mouse at the same
time, that i am looking for.

Read the book and thought I would take more from it by listening to it. Stopping to write something down - as suggested on the dvd - is not "do-able" while driving of course. The book is good - I haven't tried the workbook, but many say it is nice to have if you don't want to make your own binder to do the exercises in. This is not the "End All" of diet books, but does have some very usable, everyday suggestions.
The author only talks in the introduction, not the entire book, which oddly enough I liked the author's voice much more as compared the the person who was hired to read it. The author just sounds more personable and real.

This is worth the money! I love the fact that it addresses the psychological issues surrounding overeating, and doesn't give prescriptive advice about what to eat. I already know what I should eat, but talking back to my self-talk that says "oh, go ahead and eat it and start tomorrow" is another story.
You won't be sorry you bought this. I highly recommend the workbook AND CD.

This is the best, most honest advice you'll ever get to help you lose weight. There is no food plan here. She tells you to pick a nutritionally sound diet, as well as a back-up diet, and stick to it. She will help you change your thinking to think more like a thin person with some writing and "thinking" exercises. It's cognitive therapy, and you will learn why you should tolerate some hunger and cravings because craving something usually isn't an emergency, and your next meal is only a short time from now.

I've meditated over the years, but only recently discovered this CD of guided meditations. I use it often and have given it as a gift because I value its simplicity and straightforward approach. It's a great introduction to meditation as well as a call back to the "beginner's mind" for people who aren't new to the practice.

The meditations a easy to follow. I've tried other guided meditation CDs and they sometimes have distracting anecdotes in the middle of the meditation. This one doesn't. There is a brief introduction to each meditation that can be skipped once you get the hang of it.
