I have just listened to the final CD in this set. And they answered ALL my questions. I found it very helpful. But I know I will continue to want and need support. So I'm wondering what to order next as I already have the law of attraction and Sarah books 1 and 2 and now finding the Path to joy through engergy balance, part 2. I'm so pleased with Esther, Jerry and "Abraham" because they have said everything I needed to hear. The answers to the questions they were asked were amazing. Now It seems obvious that they're right and I think at some level I have always known these things but I wanted someone to give me permission to accept these "truths" and they have done it. You know it's a releif to finally hear these things.

Provides the practice and the rememberance for me

I listen to this CD almost everyday. I find the processes very practical, in fact I'm practicing some. On a whole I find anything from the Teachings of Abraham to be revolutionary - adding so much clarity to what I already know and what I don't know.

I'm more aware of my emotions - those that make me feel good. I'm more aware of my creation in the moment and the awesomeness of myself - that I can create worlds. The Teachings of Abraham does this in a gentle and deliberate way.

Disappointed.

I was a little disappointed in this. It seems to be just a repeat of what was already on Ask and It Is Given. If you haven't read/listened to that yet, then this is OK, but I think Ask is better.

I bought this set a couple of months ago and I have listened to all 4 CDs.
Every CD places something good back into your life by reviewing past lives, breaking neg patterns, or visualizing what you want. Doreens voice is very soothing and calming. While I have had issues in the past with going into a hypnotic state with guided meditations, Doreens voice set my mind at ease. I don't believe anyone who chooses to buy this set will be disappointed.

Ebershoff, David. "The 19th Wife", Random House, 2008.

Two Stories of Polygamy

Amos Lassen

News reports claim that Mormonism is the fastest growing religion in America and I would venture to say that it is also the religion that we, as a nation, know the least about. David Ebershoff fills some of the gap in that knowledge with "The 19th Wife", his novel that gives some of the history of the Mormons. Ebershoff gives two storylines in the book---one concerns the 19th bride Brigham Young, former president of the Church of Latter Day Saints and the other is about Jordan Scott, a gay man and former hustler who tries to understand why his mother murdered his father who had eighteen other wives.
We don't know much about the murder but we learn that Jordan had been forced out of the religion when he was 14 and left on the side of a highway for no apparent reason. As Jordan comes into his own and develops his identity, we get the parallel story of the original Mormon colony in Mesadale, Utah and the life of Ann Eliza, the 19th wife of Brigham Young. She later divorced him and then when on a national crusade to outlaw polygamy.
The two stories interweave beautifully and on many different levels. The book is rife filled with examples of how the church convinced women to share their husbands because it is a key to salvation (so they say), The brainwashing ability of these people is still evident today as we saw with the Yearning for Zion group in Texas.
Ann Eliza's story is fascinating and Ebershoff did his research. We learn about the tyranny of religion and the whole issue of polygamy. The characters are who give us the information and they are richly drawn and unforgettable. Jordan emerges as a gay hero. Woven into the historical material is a modern story and a wonderful murder mystery. At 600 pages it is quite a book but it catches you from the first page and it keeps you interested the entire time. Both the subject matter and the prose style of Ebershoff make for an outstanding read.

A compelling dual-narrative work

Jordan Scott's mother has been accused of killing his father. It could be any murder mystery - until we learn that Jordan's mother was his father's 19th wife in a small polygamist cult in Mesadale, Utah. Jordan was kicked out of the cult at the tender age of 14, left alone on the side of a highway for virtually no reason. By the time this novel starts, Jordan has established himself and developed an identity, but that identity isn't strong enough to keep him from trying to save his mother once she convinces him that she didn't do it - despite all the evidence against her. Paralleled with Jordan's story is that of the original Mormon colony, more specifically the background and life of Brigham Young's 19th wife, Ann Eliza. She divorced him and took her story on the national circuit, making strides in the battle to force the early Mormons to renounce polygamy all together. Of course, they didn't complete the job, because Jordan's family is derived from the sect that broke off after the official renunciation.

This story is told through many forms of media - in addition to an ordinary narrative in both storylines, there are also excerpts from newspapers, journals, letters, and even a master's thesis. All of these are fictional, of course, but they add a feeling of authenticity since some of these could have existed in similar ways, and it's certainly not unimaginable that a member of the current LDS church would choose to research Ann Eliza.

Both stories are extremely compelling and I love the way that they related to each other. Ebershoff thought the story through on many levels. I suspect it would be difficult to find a non-fiction work that could better expose the evils of polygamy. In addition, I could relate to all the characters and I loved how Jordan picked up several endearing sidekicks along the way. They added flavor and emotional attachment to the story, fleshing out Jordan's character as we witnessed his relations with them. I was drawn in by Ann Eliza's narrative, too, so it's clear that the author can do a very good job with historical fiction in addition to his mystery storyline. I did, however, feel a bit disappointed by the mystery's ending. It wraps up too quickly and a bit too neatly, in my opinion.

This is a very enjoyable book and I'd recommend it to fans of mystery and historical fiction.

Fact, Fiction and Innuendo
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-06
Told in a back and forth style with many voices, Ebershoff tells the story of Ann Eliza Young who being the 19th wife of Brigham Young decides that polygamy isn't for her and decides to do the unthinkable and file for divorce. Interspersed with this story is the story of BeckyLyn also a 19th wife of modern day who is accused of killing her husband, and her son Jordan, one of the Lost Boys, who is trying to clear her name and get her out of Mesadale, the compound she lives in with the other Firsts; the break off group that still follows the old tradition of polygamy.

Have I lost you yet?

There is also Kelly Dee the student researcher that is trying to pull the life of Ann Eliza together for her masters thesis who is telling the story, in a round about way, through all the characters and who is also trying to decipher the goings on and hoping to separate fact from fiction.

Though this is a book of fiction, there is enough history to make you wonder what is real and what is embellished for a better story. In this multiple character driven novel, Ebershoff reaches into the world that Smith and Young created and how dominate they were over their followers. Whether truth or innuendo, the story makes a very slow progress to a conclusion that really wasn't a conclusion, just a good place to stop.

Great book

I really enjoyed this book. I had trouble putting it down. Mr Ebershoff weaved 2 tales a hundred years apart, yet related. One based on the real life story of Anne Eliza Webb, wife # 19 of Brigham Young (one of the first leaders in the Mormon church) and a fictional story of a modern day cult of polygamists. The book switches back and forth between the 2 stories. Seemingly the 2 stories are related only by the fact that the 2 woman at the heart of the stories are both ranked 19th with their husbands, but the author lays clues thoughout the book that connects the stories futher.
I guess real life is more interesting then fiction because the story of Anna Eliza is definalty better then the modern day murder mystery of the second story.
I've always been curious about the mormon faith and it's current reputation. My interest in this book was peaked when I saw that it was about polygamy and it didn't disappoint. Understandably, the story doesn't paint a nice picture of polygamy, however the author did a magnificent job of including several points of view, including those of the men who practice it.
This book was so well written, it answered my own disbelief about the reality of someone that would practice polygamy, and satisfied my interest in Mormonism's history.
Wow, I will definatly read this book again soon.

I was looking for a creative visualization meditation program that I could listen to in the mornings when I woke up. There are several short meditations on this CD that are perfect for that and don't take much time. What I also like is the 30-minute relaxation & goal visualization session that I can listen to at night before bed. I regularly have this CD is my car when I need to relax or motivate myself with positive thoughts. The CD is 60 minutes long, but you can easily listen to it in short pieces if you don't have an hour to spare.

I recommend Shakti Gawains Creative Visulization Meditation CD. It's
certainly not the best one out there, but is good for beginners. This 60 minute CD is much better then the original book on tape she did years ago. On that tape, she read very fast, she sounded unenthusiastic, the meditations were rushed, so I couldn't get much out of it.

Here, she reads slow and her voice is calm and relaxing. The added music is pretty good, however I would have wanted a little more time spent with her guidance through the creative visualizations.

Not the best out there.

Twentysix years ago I went throught the complete Hopkins Master Selling book and tapes several times. I even attended a couple of live seminars were Tom actually spoke. His training is timeless. People haven't changed and Tom's techniques enable any salesperson to acheive success if they have a decent product. I enjoyed the refresher course, it was kind of like going back to the old home town in a sense. I've forgotten more about sales in the last 26 years than most people know. This audio kit is worth the money.

I don't sell that way and am happy to sell my copy to anyone who wants to sell cars, etc. This was a waste of money!

I have been listening to this tape for years, not as a guided meditation, but more as a reminder of strong, important, simple ideas that are easy to forget.

Thich Nhat Hanh has published many books and tapes. This audio CD stands out because in its several hours it covers all the major bases of Zen thinking and practice. When you have listened to it you will have all you need to begin a meditation practice, to understand some basics of Zen or EuroAmerican Buddhism, or advance your existing meditation practice.

The CD includes comments on the importance of being fully present in the moment. ("Present moment, wonderful moment") It goes on to teach a basic but very useful guided meditation, with explanations of each step, so that it is easy to learn and understand. For example, one part has you saying to yourself silently on your in-breath, "breathing in I am aware of a tree," and on the out-breath, "breathing out, I smile to the tree." The words alone don't sound like much, but after hearing the comments, it becomes powerful. The author explains that the tree can be a symbol for all the resouces that are outside my body, that are readily available for me. If there is a tree, he says, there have to be sun, rain, and earth, for example, or else there would be no tree. This thought can be calming as we encounter daily anxieties and sometimes feel that we are not getting enough of what we need: we can look on a tree and remember that the earth has all we need that is important. Enough food, enough air, etc. Breathing in I am aware of a tree, breathing out I smile to the tree.

He also uses this idea to advance the ideas of interbeing and impermanence, but I'll let you find out about those when hearing the CD!

Please don't hesitate to e-mail me with any questions.

I have downloaded audio books by Thich Nhat Hanh in which the sound quality has not been nearly as good as it is on this 2-disc set. If you are not familiar with this Vietnamese monk and are exploring mindfulness training and insight meditation, or just want to learn how to make your days on the planet a more joyful, peaceful experience, this is a great investment. If you are a follower, you will love The Art Of Mindful Living. It contains some of his most core teachings, and there are some beautiful chants included as well. Wonderful opportunities for mindful, contemplative time.

As a Thich Nhat Hanh fan, (tough to say!), this item is a nice addition to my collection of print and audio. For those of you who are tempted to download the audio, be aware that it comes from an Amazon partner, [...] I discovered too late (my bad) that their proprietary DRM software doesn't support my particular mp3 device, a Sansa e250. So I'm going to wind up buying it twice.

After being decidedly unimpressed with the first Sue Monk Kidd book I read (The Mermaid Chair), I was afraid this one would be similarly the literary equivalent of a Lifetime movie. I was pleasantly surprised: while it has the same airy style that enables you to motor through the pages, it has substantially more weight.

The characters are engaging and believable (another reviewer questions why the protagonist doesn't act terribly mature, but she IS only a teenager after all!), and the plot includes historical and personal drama (African Americans gaining the right to vote and socially oppressed people's responses to racism).

This is also a rare novel in that while many would consider it to be in the genre of Beach Book, the women depicted are not superficial and do not seem like 2-dimensional "yay, girl power!" characters. They are strong, smart, conflicted women who are determined to make the world what they want it to be, whether questioning racism, letting newfound sexuality develop, or even creating a new religion.

The book is more aimed at someone between the ages of 12-16, particularly female. Kidd portrays well the frailty of this girl, coupled with her insecurities and joys. Her relationships to the people around her are those I find unreal a little bit- saintly people who are completely forgiving. although the main character is real enough, the people around her settings seem fake, enough so that it makes it hard to relate. your call people!

This is a short CD only about 30 minutes (great to listen to in the morning before starting the day or on a break at work). This is a very soothing CD The sound quality is excellent and the message truly inspired me to think about:
1) How to love yourself and how to accept yourself. (Part One)
2) How to forgive yourself and others. (Part Two)
This CD I will listen to often because it has caused me to realize just how important it is to love yourself and forgive yourself for past mistakes and to forgive others. It it true freedom to do thse things! I highly recommend this to anyone in need of making a positive change to your life! It really works!
