Excellent, helpful, informative, and humorous. Loved it. Played it for many of my friends and children. Everyone that has heard it said they wished they had listened to this earlier. An inexpensive, excellent buy. A must for everyone.

Some good, helpful material, but would have liked more on the CD

A very entertaining and educational recording about conquering debt. Dave Ramsey offers an often funny approach to steps one can take to manage debt. I thought it did go a little long into some of his illustrations (a little too much about cars for my interest) but the actual guidance and steps given were helpful and practical. As a result of hearing this recording I am curious to research more of Dave Ramsey's material.

What I learned after 25 years of Marriage

Review Date: 2008-09-03
Everyone has heard that opposites attract, but then how do these two opposites communicate after all the excitement has worn off? I learned that my love language was quality time talking together and my husband's was words of affirmation. I would have never figured this out on my own. I have been giving this book as a wedding present because I realized that young couples need it as much as couples who have been married 25 years. I've been told that it was the favorite gift one young couple received!

A great book to help understand expressing love, or at the very least a way to get one to actually become more mindful in a loving relationship.
I am looking forward to reading the singles edition. I would recommend this book for all who are interested in learning about "love" and how to express it and how to read your partners expression of it. If I had read and practiced what this book teaches, I know my love life would be very different now.

My ex (note ex)and I went to a marrage counselor and she recommended this book. It resulted with him buying me things (gift giving) and asking if I needed anything at the store (acts of service). My ex was very content thinking he was following the book and making things better and it gave him the excuse to avoid the real problems. Neither the counselor or my ex listened to the real issues and couldn't understand why things wern't getting better. People should raise their standards and not marry anyone who doesn't know the ridiculous basics in this book....be nice. It kept us from getting to the real issues but I had nice gifts by the time I'd had enough and left.

Outstanding Book!

This book was recommended to me by a friend who is a consultant. It is an amazing read. It really helps you understand that while some conversations are difficult to have, most are crucial and should not be avoided. It gives you real tips and tools as well as an index for quick reference in the back of the book if you are looking to find something quickly after you've read it.

Highly recommend this book if you are interested in learning more about the dynamics of important conversation.

4.5* Warm practicality

This short (almost 4 hours in 35 tracks--CD#1: 42:46 in 8 tracks, CD#2: 76:49 in 10 tracks, CD#3: 58:45 in 8 tracks, CD#4: 55:33 in 9 tracks) set builds on Pema's book Start Where You Are: A Guide to Compassionate Living (Shambhala Classics) addressing some of the 49 Lojong mind training slogans. These implement the general approach of Tibetan Buddhism (Vajrayana) of turning poison into elixir--esp. transforming the 3 Poisons of aggression, craving, & ignorance into Relative Bodhichitta=Maitri ("unconditional friendliness" or lovingkindness) & compassion. Pema notes the parallels to homeopathy in her practical method of "using difficult circumstances as a path of awakening" based on the teachings of her master Trungpa Rinpoche.

But, she also addresses Absolute Bodhichitta ("openness"), familiar to students of Mahamudra and Dzogchen, in a more concrete way--rather than only in theory or even in exercises. Further, she points out the dreamlike nature of reality (using shopping malls, airports, & lucid dreaming=waking up inside a dream to demonstrate this). There's heavy emphasis on Tonglen (see Tonglen, the Path of Transformation) including a guided sitting Tonglen session, description of "traffic Tonglen"--a type of on-the-spot Tonglen in which one connects to other folks in the same "boat" as one is experiencing at the moment, and using Tonglen to deal with difficult people & circumstances. As usual she includes both her own and others' actual experiences to explicate her teachings.

These sessions are similar to much of her other work, but she notes the value of repetition--per the student who heard the same thing over & over but finally "got it" on the 25th time! But this set has even more humor than her prior works--I actually laughed out loud! Her gently compassionate, spiritual warrior approach is esp. evident in the Q&A sessions, her depiction of the 3 Courages (king, ferryman, shepherd), & her mindfulness of pain approach. Overall, implementation of these techniques dissolves one's dichotomizing, denial, & dissociation. As she states: "You're getting somewhere with your students when they begin to get terrified." But, that's what it may take when facing one's addictions & ignorance so that one can "Live so you can die without regrets." You won't regret listening to her IMHO.

I heard Billy Collins speak in Wellington early one chilly Sunday morning. He commented that he was amazed anyone would want to get out of bed and listen to him on such a cold day ...he wouldn't! Of course we all thought it worth the effort, nothing beats hearing a really superb poet reading his own work superbly.I heartily recommend this cd, it's always in the most played pile near my cd player and on my ipod,so that I can listen to him any time.
A great selection of his work and interesting pre-ambles before each poem.

EXCELLENT READ

Reading some of the already submitted reviews, it seems Crais fans and detracters alike expect a certain continous style of writing and storyline. I started reading Crais in the middle sequence of his books, went back to the start of the Elvis Cole novels, and have now read the latest. To be sure, Crais has grown in his writing style with more emphasis on enhancing prose than character personalization, which at times had become rather tedious. I was impressed with every aspect of this novel. Each time I thought I had it all figured out, a previously dismissed clue surfaced and propelled the book along. The old Elvis and Pike are now developing deeper personalities, a must for continuing characters in a series and I'm glad to see it. If I were to compare Elvis to a tv character, it would be Michael on Burn Notice - fun, kind-hearted, smart and up to the minute on the latest in detection methods which are shared with the reader in an amusing manner. How any detectives spell out the tricks of the trade? This series can, in my opinion, only continue to get better, but there's really no rush to improve. Crais is now at a most enjoyable level!

Very enjoyable book - why then a two star? Because this book does not compare to any of Crais' past writing - the characters do not have the depth of previous books - there is nothing really puzzling to try to unravel.

Robert Crais is one of the best writers ever - hope he keeps writing. This novel just does not meet up to the high standard Crais has formerly written at.

a mystery novel hat one shouldn't miss.

Review Date: 2008-08-31
Robert Crais has created another mystery novel that fans of reading won't want to miss. Chasing Darkness once again brings forth Elvis Cole to solve a mystery that could only come from the mind of Crais. It seems a few years back Elvis Cole made a career mistake: a serial killer was exonerated of murder charges that he may have been guilty of. Now with the discovery of a body, this man may have killed again. Was Elvis Cole fooled or was his defense flawless and accurate? Chasing Darkness has an apt name as this novel really does expose the darker side of Crais' imagination. Well-written and impeccable character development lead to a mystery novel hat one shouldn't miss.

Chasing Darkness: An Elvis Cole Novel (Elvis Cole) I'm at a loss as to the negative reviews of this latest Elvis Cole novel. I've read all the other books and this fits right in with what we've seen before. I agree some authors tend to lose their freshness and seem to be following an old, worn out formula as the series advances (case in point Jonathan Kellerman's newest Alex Delaware; now there's a disasppointment for you), but I didn't find that to be the case here. Elvis is doing his thing; Pike is doing his; and that's what the fans want and enjoy. Buy the book at Costco and go on another case with Elvis.

This is a book that everyone should read! Makes you realize how important family is and what having moral values really mean. It also makes you think about what kind of person you want to be remembered as and especially what you would like to teach your children. I absolutely loved it. Wish we still lived in those days. The world has changed so much and I can't say it's for the best.

Tim Russert was a highly intelligent man and it was always fun to watch him on Meet the Press, but with this CD set, you get to hear how this man got to be who he was and how his father, Big Russ, helped to shape his life. I bought the book and the CD's, but the CD's are especially nice, since Tim Russert is the narrator. The book is filled with his humor, insight, humanity, and ethics.

All in all this is a great book though long, it contains some excellent information, i would recommend reading it slowly. Pace urself and u will find it enjoyable.

This book has made me afraid to stay in America. I read the book and now I want to move to china or india so bad.

this book got tedious after awhile. I had to keep my eyes from closing and my mind from running somewhere else while I read. In a sense, he kept retelling what he already said in the beginning and almost all of his interviews are from Indian CEOs or Chinese CEOs. Some of the facts I learned from this book are quite surprising.

While I was reading this book, I was overcome by a really big urge to go up to Pres. Bush and slap him.

Overall I liked this book for only the new facts I learned, but other than that it was pretty tedious.

Typical Business Journalism
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-15
This is pretty typical business journalism, which seems to be in the mold of the last round of "sky is falling" business journalism from the 1980's...when Japan was going to rule the world. I thought this book was going to be something new, but its just the same-old, same-old: US jobs are going oversees, we don't have enough engineers, republicans are ruining the country, blah, blah, blah. Also, the book is pretty sloppy: its overly long and redundant, and the "research" is not at all comprehensive or balanced, but mostly just opinion from various business honchos with views biased by their own business interests.

It is written from a very U.S.-centric view of the world, namely that the role of the rest of the world is to do the grunt work that we're too talented and creative to do, and also with a certain amazement that there are people in other countries as smart, or smarter, than us! I find it inconsistent as well, with one chapter lamenting the decline of U.S. science and engineering education and how this will be our downfall in the flat world, and another chapter promoting liberal arts education, and "story telling", as the keys to success in the flat world. Also, the flat world in this tome seems to be made up almost exclusively of IT workers: what about the transportation industry, or other traditional, but still relevant industries?

Overall, an interesting topic with some nice observations, but in need of a major editing and more credible research. Also, it is better viewed as a discussion of trends in IT outsourcing, rather than a map of where the world as a whole is headed.
