Do not buy the audio if you're looking to listen to it in your car for some advice...it's mainly to do with your partner in a workbook together. Also, only if you have alot of time to devote to this type of self-counseling.

The long meditation track on this CD can take you to
a sacred place in your heart.
At least 4 of the other songs are simply outstanding.

Given the rating, I assume that most people are going to think that it's due to me having some vendetta against Pullman's views. From the outset, I'd like to say that Pullman's depiction of the perversive aspect(s) of religeon was actually one of the book's strengths. However, it is a strength that is overshadowed by numerous shortcomings.
Speaking broardly, the novel's main drawback is that it's simply impossible to feel engaged with the world or the people in it. It becomes clear to the reader that the world depicted is not ours, that like many parallel universes in fiction, it has similarities and differences, the two often going hand in hand. However, we never get a full sense of the world, only glimpses at it. The nature of the world is portrayed throughout the story.
Now this could arguably be a strength, that Pullman doesn't go off on a tangent of world building, focussing instead on the story. While reading the novel however, it felt like a weakness. There were many oportunities to further flesh out the world and it felt like Pullman missed them every time. We recieve some info, but only in bits and pieces. Surely it wouldn't be too hard to expand on them a bit?
The characters are another matter. The issues with them aren't as succinct as the world they inhabit, but they still feel like shadows of what they could be. Lyra is one such example and to be honest, I think that the fact that the story is written through her POV as opposed to a more omniescent style contributes to the world building problem. An eleven-year old can only understand so much, and by the end of the novel, she's changed little. She's still some little girl who's barely developed emotionally. Granted, it's a trilogy, but surely SOME progress could have been made?
The rest of the characters also have the problem of conforming to stereotypes. Iorek the strong, Asriel the mystic, Coulter the evil witch-lady, etc. There's at times something more deeper to them, such as Asriel's true colors coming through and his discussion as to the nature of man, but it's really just a spark in a pool of shallow character development. And obeying the laws of nature, that fire is extinguished by the volume of water.
Northern Lights indeed has strengths, as mentioned above. But there's so much overshadowing them that the novel is near unreadable and it's easy to miss them. And since books are primarily about writing, an aspect which fails so spectacularly in this case, I have no choice but to give it one star.

Creative plot - good points for the story which is quite interesting.
Points off for thematic writing - Pullman constantly goes into irrelevant and elaborate descriptions of the surroundings which come across as thesaurus exercises. Typically the details he describe are never of any impact on the plot. In book one this didn't bother me, but over time I found it extremely thematic with these excessive descriptions.
Other points off for the stupid - only suitable word - writing that Pullman applies to "less educated" individuals. The flawed syntax and spelling is only annoying. It really takes away from the story - no value is added by this half-baked cockney English.
Total score should be three but the plot is so creative that it gets four stars.
BTW, pox on the publisher for changing the title - I am painfully aware that many of my fellow Americans are less than enlightened but books are supposed to lift us up, not perpetuate issues.

More depth and better storyline than the movie. This books reads quickly and a good way to expand your vocabulary. It has an imaginative story that's hard to second guess. You'll want to order the second volume early so you can continue the epic.

Maybe it was all the hype I got from friends who'd read it and recommended it, but it seems over-rated. Gets off to a slow start and doesn't really pick up and become a page-turner until Lyra falls through the ceiling and is in real danger. However, at that point I started to have a hard time suspending my disbelief over the fact that this 11-year-old can understand what's going on, be that clever, and have the conversations she's having. It's all too perfect. Still, I must admit that I have already put a reserve on the second book from the library, because I want to know what happens, so in that respect it's successful.
An incredibly rich universe that holds terrifying secrets

I first became interested in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy after seeing the film based on it (The Golden Compass (New Line Platinum Series Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)). I found the screenplay to be disjointed and lacking, so I decided to read the original novel in order to have a better idea of important missing background information.
Lyra Belacqua is a wild child growing up among stodgy scholars at Oxford's Jordan College. She's content sneaking around slinging mud, engaging in street fights with rival schools, and avoiding any real sort of education. Her daemon Pantalaimon is her voice of reason. And here is Pullman's first masterpiece: daemons are human souls that are present as an accompanying animal; they are connected to their owner, yet have distinct personalities. Generally, a daemon is the opposite gender of its human. Only children have daemons that are able to shapshift; once they reach puberty, their daemon will maintain that form.
Lyra and Pantalaimon witness an attempted murder that would have had devastating consequences for them both, and intervene. And so starts Lyra's journey to the North; to Svalbard, a reimagined Norway that's a dangerous land swarming with cliff-ghasts, ruthless Tatar tribes, and armored polar bears. Her secret weapon is an alethiometer, the titular "Golden Compass" that allows its user to ask a series of questions in order to discover the truth. There are very few in existence, and fewer still that know how to accurately read it. Lyra is one of those few.
Along the way, she becomes involved with the gyptians, a Gypsy-like seafaring tribe, a Texan balloon pilot, a friendly witch, and an exiled prince that aid her on her quest to reach her Uncle Asriel. Richly imagined and brimming with tantalizingly complex science, Pullman's universe is, much like Tolkien and Rowling's works, a self-contained universe that possesses its own form of religion (as many have noted, Pullman's works are anti-religion, or at least anti-organized religion), history, geography, and science. The book is much more richly nuanced and imagined than the film adaptation, which does a dreadful disservice to the original novel by omitting the final chapters.
A note: if you consider yourself to be very religious, you may not want your children reading these books, as there are numerous anti-religious (specifically, anti-Catholic) sentiments within, as well as discussions of castration and scenes of at times extreme violence, including towards children. Pullman, an atheist, takes issue with the dangers of organized religion; as one character puts it, "Every church is the same: control, destroy, obliterate every good feeling." However, the His Dark Materials trilogy is beautifully written and imagined and has much to recommend it.

He could have saved me about 29 minutes by just puting his book title and website on the screen. Guess I should have known better when his hot seat guest was a Playboy Playmate with about as much to say as Barbie.

I don't usually listen to television advertising, but this sounded really good. I fell for the whole thing and called this morning. I was really turned off by the sales person who relentlessly tried to sell me one thing after another. I should have retracted my order and hung up. Instead, after finishing my order, I went online and checked the reviews-which I should have done first. After learning that this guy was a crook and that the book was mostly fluff, (according to helpful reviews) I tried to cancel my order.I was told that this could not be done. I spoke to a supervisor who told me that the order was placed and the money was already taken from my account. I told her that this was unlikely, since the salesperson told me it would be several days before my order would be ready for shipment. A call to my bank confirmed the lie. I learned that they had not yet taken any funds from my card. I had my card cancelled to advoid the charges. These people are just as sleazy as the credit card companies with their high pressure sales tactics and dishonesty!

Although I believe this topic needs to be tackled (every Christian battles with negative, ungodly thought), Meyer seems to jump around in her logic, trying too hard to prove her point without enough supporting detail. I had high hopes for reading this book and sharing it with my husband and friends, but it lacks examples and is redundant. On the contrary, the major positive is her extensive use of Scripture.

I have struggled with anxiety and depression over the years, and this book provides hopeful guidance and scripture to loosen the grip of negativity that can overwhelm our thinking. If you long to live each day with a more positive outlook, read this book. It's a good place to start.

I received a teaching once that basicly said that when you get right down to it the Devil really only has two methods for tempting us: 1. Pressure 2. Pleasure. The Devil has three maxims which allows him to pull this off : 1. You (your own thoughts, bad habits, exc.) 2. The environment (Government, religious oppression, the systems of the world, exc.), and 3. Other people. Joyce Meyer's "Battlefield Of The Mind" is mostly geared at the one maxim each of us have the most control over (You, yourself, your thoughts, and YOU).
Joyce masterfully explains how that old Advesary The Devil works by waiting for the right moment (he`s not only a parasite but he`s also a predator). He waits to see where your weak, when your most vulnerable moment is, and he waits for that moment to attack. The Bible says "Resist the Devil and he will flee from you." Perfect example is Luke chapter 6, The devil waits for Jesus to be 40 days and nights in the wilderness before he attacks. He didn't come the first day to attack him when our Lord was at his strongest. Oh no, our advesary doesn't play fair; he bides his time and waits for your weakest moment and attacks. Jesus resisted him and the devil fled from him (for awhile). Best thing is we have victory through our risen Lord this very day if we claim it. Joyce does a great job of illustrating this in this book(though I don't know if she used the Luke example I used above or not).
I really got a lot of insight from this book. For example, one of the concepts in the book (in my own words) was "what comes out of your mouth had to originate in your brain." Sounds simple enough , but Joyce had a masterful way of describing every thought we commonly have today and referring it to biblical passages. About half way through the book I began to realize that the grumbling, griping, complaining, and various other human emotions and thoughts I have are not uncommon to our time. The children of Israel went through these same emotions and they are all recorded in Gods Word. I used to ponder how stupid these people must have been, but now I can see myself in them. It really was a humbling experience! Many of us make the same mistake over and over again and ask God, "Why don't you do something?" Truth is God has always been willing to help us. We are the ones who get in God's way by not bringing our thoughts into the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). Read this book and find out how you can change and train your mind to shut the door on The Devil and how to allow God to do what he's always been willing to do. BLESS YOU!!!
Hebrews 13:5b "for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."
P.S. This book comes in many formats. There's the traditional version, teen version, devotional version, exc. It doesn't matter which one you use. Just read one of them. You will be blessed.
This is a great book. It is easy to read and held my interest. Many of the principles included are those we already know, but have never seen them explained or really examined them ... Although it is not a Christian book, I found this book to be full of truth.
Wonderfully thought provoking

This is a wonderful book that really makes you see that each person can make a change within themselves to make the world around them a nicer place to be, even for themselves.

This book is extremely valuable and will benefit just about anyone who reads it. If the priciples are taken to heart and used in the workplace, some very positive shifting can occur. Reading it will give hope to many who work in an environment that has many human obstacles to progress and success (and aren't they all human?). Read it on your next plane ride - it's even entertaining!!
Just wonderful!!!

I think I've read most of the top dozen or so best sellers on leadership. They all have wonderful advice. But there's now also a new kid on the block, a new book, that is probably the best-kept secret on leadership and HUMAN RELATIONS. It's a book called "Going Beyond Leadership of Character" by "West Point" author, Norman Thomas Remick. It goes beyond all the wonderful books like "Leadership and Self-Deception" because it gives you something special that the others do not give you. I consider it to be, as I do "Leadership and Self-Deception", a must read. Like the book "Good to Great" tells you why some companies go from being just good to being great, the Remick book tells you how to make the leap from being just good to being great as a leader.

I haven't read this book but I have seen him talk before and he always seems to want to back his argument with "scientific proof". Does western science have to approve something for it to exist? One may easily come to a conclusion that an experiment in a laboratory only gives information about the scientist who conducts it, it tells us very little about the reality, yet we are brainwashed to think that scientists are objective, they know what they are doing etc. No scientist is objective unless he is god. You don't need math or physics degree to understand the nature of things. All you need is to think for yourself. Start by turning off your TV. Connect clues that you notice no matter how absurd they may seem. I am hesitant to buy this book just because I don't want to read more of what is scientifically proven. I'd rather read a book that a wise person wrote based on his/her own experiences. Western scientists at this point are no different then the religious fanatics of the middle ages. We do not have to live by the reality that they create for us. It gets really boring after a while to hear that universe works just like a computer etc. A man made piece of junk compared to infinite creativity. Pretty immature I'd say. Mr. Braden would you mind unlearning what you've been thought in school? OK, it's out of my system. If we get rid of the science related stuff, I think the rest of the information that Mr Braden has is wonderful.

A great book for anyone who is interested in quantum physics but does not necessarily speak the scientific language. Braden relates quantum mechanics to daily living in a beautiful way!

"The Divine Matrix" by Gregg Braden highlights Universal Energy & advocates that if you want to experience healing in your life you must first go to the Source, the force that links all of creation; the Matrix. This essence or Universal Energy is the Source of ultimate power.
Gregg Braden eloquently bridges science with miracles in "The Divine Matrix" & this is certainly a most recommended book.
Even better read together with "Nexus" by Morrison & Singh a New Energy novel that I've recently discovered that is consciously written from the soul to the soul. Share the light!

Gregg Braden explains how all the world is connected by the Matrix. He provides explanations of scientific experiments to back up his theory. "Time is not at all what it seems. It does not flow in only one direction, and the future exists simultaneously with the past." (Albert Einstein) If this is true, as Gregg and Einstein agree, then think of the possibilities. Gregg brings esoteric ideas into the 21st century. A must read.

The subject matter of this book and CD set is fascinating. However, Myss has so contaminated it with her berating, shrill, negative parent tone I couldn't stand to listen for very long. Worse, as anyone who has studied meditation knows, when you are in a meditative state you are very receptive to what other people say. As a result, I felt like I was being psychicly abused every time I would follow her directions into a deep meditative state and then be berated by her. As far as I am concerned, this is spiritual abuse and until she changes her ways people should stop buying CDs, reading books or attending workshops by this woman.

When I first started to listen to this set of Cd's I almost stopped listening to them. They are so punitive. Yet I found kernels of truth within the words. The book is about Teresa of Avila, a mystic that lived within the confines of the Spanish Inquisition. It is all about getting closer to God. Yet, that closeness is the ultimate sacrifice, giving up any ideas of rewards. I had the impression that I should adorn a hair shirt and rip myself to shreds. There is little within it that is uplifting. If you enter upon this journey according to the author be prepared to suffer, you will not enter a spa. Yet, I continued to listen because there were still things about it that spoke to me. Perhaps it was my southern baptist fire and brimstone raising. It is different and will perhaps teach you how to get rid of the reptiles in your soul.

I have only words of gratitude and praise for this particular work of Caroline Myss. Having read her books and listened to many of her other audio lectures over the years, for me this was the most powerful, honest, and uplifting. I did not find any part of this lecture to be "harsh" or "shrill" (as some have commented) -- but instead found her to be at her most passionate. Love radiates from this CD set -- love for Humanity, personal and impersonal. I would recommend it to anyone on this Path who is capable of being sternly honest with themselves, on all levels. A beautiful work!
Man, have I had it w/this woman's rants!

I couldn't even get through the all the CD's. When she was active as a medical intuitive, then her work shined. It's when she veered off course into subjects such as "grace", that she lost me. I don't need to be scolded and name calling is definitely something that I will not tolerate and if I was to hear her carry on in a workshop like that, well, I'd have to leave. On one of her earlier CD's, I can recall her saying that she doesn't read letters of criticism, so she probably doesn't read online reviews either. Arrogant! No matter. It's the buyer that should beware. She preaches humility but she sure doesn't practice it. I haven't renewed my online newsletter either because of her mean spirited attitude towards her students in general and New Agers in particular, who are her bread and butter, whether she admits to it or not. Her earlier work...love it! Now, though, she's full of herself and I'm going to resist the urge to purchase any more of her work because I know it will just be more of the same angry diatribe and I just do not need it!
