Challenging Your Doubts

I don't believe we can reason our way to God but Keller's outstanding book may well shake the confidence of those who believe reason leads away from God. He gives concise rebuttals to many questions expressed by young people seeking spiritual answers in an Age of Doubt. I have shared it with those closest to me who share these struggles. It is a powerful tool for anyone sincerely pursuing ultimate truth.

Clear Reasoning about God and Christianity

Should be required reading for anyone who is a Christian, calls himself a Christian, has ever thought about being a Christian, has ever met a Christian, doesn't know what a Christian is (or even if you think you do!), or is absolutely certain that Christians have it "all wrong".
If you're a thinking person, it's for YOU!

After reading this wonderful, intelligent book, I plan to buy more and give as gifts for Christmas. No matter what you believe, you will find Tim Keller compelling and thought provoking.

Calling all skeptics...read this book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-28
If any of these questions -- or questions like them -- are yours, you should read this book:

1. Science, logic and philosophy disprove Christianity, don't they?
2. Isn't Christianity an outdated religion rooted in superstition and fear?
3. How can an intellectual being accept that an all-powerful God demanded a perfect sacrifice for the redemption of his people?
4. Is there even a God at all?
5. Aren't we all just chemical by-products of a cosmic accident?

Tim Keller concisely, intelligently and respectfully shows that the Christian faith is much more logical and much more believable than the skeptical world is sometimes ready to accept. Keller makes a graceful case for Christianity without being argumentative or condescending. I don't think there has been such a clear book on this topic since Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis.

Honeyed words signifying dogmatism, not intellect.

Review Date: 2008-08-23
As an atheist, I looked forward to reading this book to find what an intellectual and sophisticated believer would say to a skeptic. Keller leads with a convincing presentation of both skeptical and dogmatic viewpoints, and leads the reader to believe that he will "explode" the case for atheism and otherwise answer skepticism with convincing and highly reasoned arguments. However, for all his good writing and insistent good will, the intellectual tenor of this book is as hackneyed as they come- as classic an apologia as one might want to find from the last decade or the last century. His coups de grace generally invoke C. S. Lewis, whose chestnuts of apology hardly break new intellectual ground.

On the problem of evil, he concludes: "Just because you can't see or imagine a good reason why God might allow something to happen doesn't mean that can't be one." This is of course the old panglossian argument that all is for the good, at least by the mysterious ways of god. The problem is that scripture and religious believers have very definite ideas about what is just and unjust, to the point of a license to kill (the just war, not to mention the inquisition). So this cognitive humility foisted on the skeptic suddenly evaporates when the issue is, say, abortion, or the divinity of Jesus. The fact is that humans have an inborn and cultivated sense of morals, which is what they use to assess whether a religion is beneficial, not the other way around. Indeed, Keller then turns around to give secular reasons (the liberation of women) why Christianity was at its origin was more moral than its surrounding community. It is our subjective and evolving moral sense that is the criterion, not words on a page, let alone words from the bronze age.

On the problem of multiple religions, Keller presents an equally deficient and hackneyed solution. Quoting Alvin Plantinga in answer to the proposition that a Christian would in all probability be Muslim if raised in a Muslim society, he notes: "... If the pluralist had been born in Morocco he probably wouldn't be a pluralist. Does it follow that ... his pluralist beliefs are produced in him by an unreliable belief-producing process?". The problem with this formulation is that it ignores the reasoning at issue. The "leap of faith" that is required to take on religious belief is notoriously non-intellectual (as Keller admits in his introduction as being the "second barrier" to his personal faith, which was overcome with a personal experience of god's presence). This leap is socially conditioned, as is the expression of religious emotions generally. Thus the religious person takes on the religious forms she was born into with few exceptions. On the other hand, the skeptical reasoning process applies equally to all cultural settings, and results in a dismissal of each of the religious forms, resulting in a logically consistent and universal viewpoint rather than a parochially artistic product. There is no harm in valuing the many expressions of religious sentiment that humanity has generated over the millennia, but we should not mistake those expressions for intellect.

Ultimately, you should read this book if you want uplifting stories of how urban, hip (yet gullible) people joined the Redeemer church. But do not read this book if you are looking for deep intellectual discussions of skepticism and why one might honestly reason one's way to Christianity.

I bought this a while ago, tried it several times to read to my four children, and was a little frustrated. So I waited until Flip Flop French: Ages 3-5: Level 1 was available, did the first three lessons in that, and voila! We're enjoying this book immensely. I agree the audio tracks aren't so great, but at least I can hear the pronunciation, which is nice with any language learning activity and comes with Flip Flop French too.

My kids and I love the book. Illustrations are great the translations are great. Unfortunately, the audio is poor quality. It sounds like the reader is inside a vault. Very hollow and tinny sounding. Still worth the price and it does help with pronunciations, but probably not something you'll listen to a lot.

My children--2 and 4 years old--have enjoyed listening to me read Goldilocks in French. I haven't had as much use for the CD, but it is fairly well produced (the female French voice is, in fact, BEAUTIFUL; I'm not as crazy about the male English voice, but that's a personal opinion). Those uncomfortable reading aloud in French could certainly depend upon the quality of the CD.

I think that the illustrations, though cartoonish, really elucidate the text well. I base this on the fact that I read the story to my kids in English only once, and yet they can obviously follow along with the French page by page.

I would recommend this resource for parents interested in introducing young kids to French through reading. Also highly recommended: Le Petit Chien Se Trouve Un Ami and similar books in the I Can Read French Barron's Educational Series, and the Complete Lyric Language: French CD.

Pros:
Very professionally recorded
Mr. Harrold is clearly experienced in the process of hypnotherapy

Cons:
For me, it took a few sessions to allow my "unconscious mind" to get used to Mr. Harrold's accent.
You must feel assured that you will not be disturbed or interrupted when you listen to this CD. For me, this diminished the quality of the sessions (not really a con, I guess).

Verdict: Overall, I found this CD to be useful and genuinely effective at improving my self-confidence. I feel I have become more relaxed and at ease, though the changes are indeed very subtle. I recommend this product and also recommend that the user go into the sessions with an open mind and a willingness to allow the process a chance at succeeding.

Love All The Glenn Herrold CD's

These CD's are an easy listen filled with wonderfully phrased, motivational words. Glenn's Australian accent is a pleasure to listen to. Places on the CD have music as well that accompanies the voice. I LOVE these CD's and own most of them. If you live in the states you may hear an occassional terminology that is not common in the U.S. (Example, in the weight series he uses a weight measurement of a 'stone' which is a British term that represents 14 pounds). This happen rarely and certainly does not detract from the message presented in any of Glenn's CD's. You can't really listen to these in the car as they are a little hypnotic so be sure you are in a stress free mind set and location when you listen to any of therse CD's. I felt they were worth every penny.

A Workhorse of a Relaxation CD

I own five CDs by Glenn Harrold. Develop Your Self Confidence (Diviniti) (Diviniti) and Creating Inner Peace & Calm are my two favorites. What I especially like about Develop Your Self Confidence (Diviniti) (Diviniti) is that it is makes no attempt to be anything other than what it is. The music doesn't intrude. The speaker (Glenn Harrold) delivers the hypnotic words in a not-overly-dramatic tone which allows me to use the CD to relax every day, if I wish, without becoming bored with it. And I've been using this CD every week for about three years.

The messages on the CD are unquestionably uplifting and completely logical.

The second sequence (roughly 28 minutes long) is even more unintrusive than the first. It's somewhat similar to the first sequence on Glenn's CD Deep Sleep (Diviniti) (Diviniti) in that it conjurs up few images to stir your imagination and relies more on calming, very slightly confusing - i.e. mesmerizing - words. Since, once a CD has finished playing, my CD player shuts itself off, I use this second sequence by itself to help me relax as I drift off to sleep at night.

Develop Your Self Confidence (Diviniti) (Diviniti) is a subtle masterpiece, useful anytime of day or night when you just want to let go.

If you are plagued with a lack of self-confidence, try this CD. It is not a panacea, but I definitely experienced what can best be described as a mind switch. Mr. Harrold's soft, calm voice is so soothing, and his words are reassuring and comforting.

Am I brimming with cocky self-confidence yet? No, I hope I never will be, and I don't think that is the point of this exercise. But for the first time in years, I feel as if I am on my way to a new (and definitely more confident) way of approaching my life.

As a complement to this CD, I can also recommend "Self Healing with Guided Imagery" by Andrew Weil and Martin Rossman, and "Beverly Hills Hypnosis - Motivation to Move".

Good luck in your own personal quest to find the elusive life balance so many of us seek.

This book is written for men but should be read by every wife or wife to be - even young Christian women who are dating. It truly gives an insight into what may be on a man's heart or what may have wounded his heart. This insight can be invaluable to the strength of the relationship and the understanding of the wife's role in the man's life. This could result in a more meaningful and deeper marriage relationship!

John Eldredge is writing from a fundamentalist perspective, and is part of the backlash against the feminist movement among other things.
The following are my major concerns with Eldredge's book:

1) Eldredge speaks right past anthropological scholarship that regards gender as a social construction.
2) Eldredge takes stereotypes of masculinity and femininity and makes them normative and ordained by God.
3) Furthermore, Eldredge's stereotypes are rooted in sexist notions of manhood and womanhood.
4) Eldredge uses decontextualised texts from the Bible to uncritically support his argument.

May I suggest an alternative, a book more rooted in Scripture and scholarship than 'Wild at Heart'; namely, 'New Adam' by Philip Culbertson.New Adam: The Future of Male Spirituality

This book is extremely insightful. It is invaluable to men in todays society who have not been taught how to be men. It is a must read. However, it is just about as good for women, especially mothers of young boys. It can help them to understand why little boys must jump in mud puddles and climb trees.

Review Date: 2008-08-16
I read the book, saw the videos, and sat through the seminars at church, trying to keep an open mind. In the end, I was sickened and disgusted by the author's attempt to fuse the kingdom of Heaven with the earth below, and make the church try to act more like the world. His loose interpretation of scriptures along with his numerous examples drawn from Hollywood, et al, is really treading on dangerous ground. When we use our emotions and our "feelings" to gauge our relationship with God, instead of relying on what the Bible has to say, we are in trouble. Does Eldridge not realize that a lot of man's attributes are not what God originally intended, but are a result of man's fall from grace (original sin)? This book may make you feel good about yourself and be ready to go slay the proverbial dragon, but it is fantasy, NOT reality!!! The fact that millions of Christian men have bought into this nonsense "hook, line, and sinker" is a sad testament to how much the Church of Jesus Christ has succumbed to the enemy's seduction in modern times.

Excellent for managers and supervisors. I was making many common mistakes and this book helped put me in the right direction. It is rare for me to remember the in-depth content of books, but this one is well written and has helped me greatly.

The first half of this book was excellent. Part I was titled "Work on me first". Under it was Chapter 2 "Master my stories: How to get your head right before opening your mouth". It talks about the stories we tell ourselves to explain what is happening around us. These stories can have a profound influence on your life. Negative stories tend to become self fulfilling prophesies. I'd heard about these stories in a talk. The speaker asked us not to share what we had learned. So I was pleased to see it in another source. The second half of the book I suspect was written by another author. Perhaps if I'd been practicing their suggestions it wouldn't have felt like formula writing. That said, I would still recommend this book to anyone who feels uncomfortable confronting people around them even when it is necessary.

Review Date: 2008-07-12
I am giving this product 5 stars because I think that on balance, it provides a LOT of essential information about voice, in a remarkably efficient form, for very little money. I learned a LOT by playing these four cds in my car, and the exercises are quite useful indeed.

I need to caution you about something: the style of the presentation is rather cloying. It's a bit like those old educational films made for high school students in the 1950's, that we used to laugh at decades later, with strange music out of the 1970's. I cannot tell if this was done intentionally for humor, or if it was simply done with earnest but some time ago.

I needed to let go of this in order to appreciate the content of the cds. I did do that, and I'm happy that I did.

The cd information includes details on different aspects of speech, how it sounds when it's wrong, and how it sounds when it's right, and exercises to determine whether this particular problem applies to you and if so, how to gently correct it over time.

What more could you ask for? There is no magic pill to fix your speech. It takes observation, and exercise. One-on-one consultation with an expert would probably be better of course, but even so, these cds provide excellent background, where you can learn on your own time and let the personal consultation operate more efficiently.

Ok, one more thing: the speaker has a great voice except for a slight lisp. How weird is that! A voice teacher to have a slight speech impediment? BUT, I'd be willing to bet that it used to be much worse and this experience, having someone help her minimize this problem, was part of what motivated her to take up this career.

So, if you want to improve your speech, or simply suspect that your speech could be improved, this product is an awesome place to start, both in terms of quality of content and the price. There are a few little annoyances along the way (IMHO) that are well worth overlooking.

Among other things, it introduced me to a new chakra clearing technique and helped me to better understand and define my own unique gifts. I DID find this CD set to be very helpful!

There is nothing bad about this presentation. Yet, I did not feel anything about it new or awakening. I felt a bit like was listening to Sylvia Brown. Who has answer for everything. But, I feel that people with this talent will/should admit they do not know all the answers. To me, which Eastern religions do not connect, chakras, and the idea that colors and such handle our being does not equal reality to me. We can all see and feel things around each other, but those feeelings, right or wrong can be colored different for everyg person. literally.

This set of 4 CDs is very well put together, I did listen to all of them in one session. However, eventhough there is a ton of information, there is nothing new that I didn't know and I am not even a psychic. I assume this set was created for the absolute novice in mind. The author talks about chakras, colors, importance of meditation and visualization. There are only a few basic exercises presented on the CDs but if you are already meditating and doing energy/spiritual work, nothing much will be accomplished. Basically, this is an overview of psychism, New Age stuff, etc. If you are looking for a learning tool to develop psychic abilities, you won't find it here.

I was so excited about getting this CD, as my grandaughters love the Berenstain Bear stories. I planned to use it on long drives in the car with them. I was extremely disappointed with the lack of expression of Mama Bear. I hate to be rude, but I think my five year old grandaughter could read with more expression. Papa Bear was fine. He "felt" the lines he was reading, but Mama Bear didn't feel her part and was not convincing. Lines were staggered and delayed. In fact, I am about to write Amazon to see if I can return the CD. I realize that the voices are the authors themselves, but I wish they had gotten the same voices that are on the DVD's.

This product naturally enhances interest in literacy and builds listening skills. The music is also a nice compliment to the stories, but a bit 70's. One piece of vocabulary I didn't agree with is the politically incorrect use of "sissy" as grandpa Berenstein bear was explaining to the children that only "sissies" do something wimpy. Wasn't pleased with that, but I look at those situations as a way to educate my child, rather than eliminate the material all together. One thing I truly was dissapointed with, however, was that the internet sales page displayed that a book should have been included with "book and audio" and I never received ANY of the books that came with the audio. Please send along the books! Thanks :)

There are two CDs for a total of 90 minutes.
The eleven stories are:
The Bears' Vacation
The Bears' Picnic
Bears in the Night
The Bear Scouts
The Big Honey Hunt
The Bears' New Baby
The Bears' Christmas
The Bike Lesson
The Bear Detectives
He Bear, She Bear
The Bears' Almanac

I agree that the voices and music are not the best but the kids still like to listen to it in the car.

annoying and poorly recorded.

The background music is an annoying tanbourine and flute that never changes and becomes way too loud in between narrations. The voices are too deep and soft (his) and too grating and plastic (hers) - you certainly cannot picture the caracters from listening to them.
The stories certainly are great but the narration is a great disappointment.

This guy is a stinkin' genius. The concepts he lays out in this book make so much sense. I've already lent it out, and can't wait to get it back to listen to it again. He finds a way to lay out some pretty deep thoughts on TOC, but makes them easy to understand. I am constantly using some of his ideas in my meetings specifically around the number of metrics needed and changing the rules of business. The only problem I have is getting the rest of the company to understand it.

Excellent tool for increasing your understanding of TOC

I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of TOC. He really explains the 'why' along with some of the history leading up to The Goal and everything that followed. I plan to listen to it a few more times, because I'm sure I missed 90% of what he really meant the first time through (but still extremely valuable!).

Broad & insightful

Opening with a tour-de-force of insightful simplicity, Beyond The Goal goes on to explore many aspects of business activity with Dr. Goldratt's custom disciplined thinking. Though I have not come through his excellent speaking with a clear understanding of the Theory Of Constraints, I heard many other ideas and had a pleasant time doing so. He covers a straight-forward process for implementing TOC within an hesitant organisation, as well as providing a brilliant technique for validating any effort to apply new technology in business.

This e-book reminds us Goldratt's literary style: clear, brief and precise.
After reading/listening to this lecture, I fell like I could run any facility in the world far better than the current management does.
This author delivers such a clear vision that by the moment we close the book we could train an audience on this subject.

This is my first, but won't be my last, experience with Coach in a Box. Dr. G. is in his usual form (obviously speaking to a live audience) but this material, in this form, is probably not for those uninitiated to TOC. An outstanding supplement to William Dettmer's Systems book on TOC.
