This book is a wonderful companion to Eckhart Tolle's Review Date: 2008-09-09
I began doing "the work" three weeks ago, shortly before my daughter went off to college, leaving my husband and me with an empty nest. From the first day on, I was able to challenge my thoughts of grieving and loss and see where I could go from this point on. I have been greatly energized by the process.
I also found it helpful to listen to the audio book in conjunction with the written format. I learned more from hearing Katie do the work than by reading it. [...]

I can't say I've actually done The Work on paper. I do it in my head (not something she recommends, I don't think), but it's just as effective for me. You don't have to read this book from cover-to-cover to reap benefits. You don't have to devote hours to doing the introspection. If you want to leave your past in the Past, but practice thinking in ways that improve the Present and Future, this book is just as useful.
I am truly grateful for this book's existence. It's one of the three books I'd take with me if I had to escape my burning house, simply because I sometimes need gentle reminders and it is very good at being just that. I have recommended this book to several friends (and burned copies for them) and they've all felt it helped them.
I hope it benefits you, as well.
Loving What IsReview Date: 2008-08-26
I guess that's a nice idea but I don't think that works under all circumstanaces. I mean if somebody hurt you very badly, it may be nice to forgive them but I'm not sure that helps to keep it from happening again.
I would like to make sure I take better care of myself by keeping it from happening again and just looking at something differently doesn't really seem to do that. I've forgiven myself for letting it happen but I want to make sure it doesn't happen again. How does looking at something differently do that?

THE RIGHT BOOK AT THE RIGHT TIMEReview Date: 2008-09-24
The right book at the right time.
LIFE OF PI is that book.
If you are in the appetite for a plot driven tale of survival you will find that here.
And if you hunger for a spiritual journey revealing the inner workings of human nature... that's also available at this banquet of fiction.
I read a few reviews of LIFE OF PI... and I am thinking that some of the reviewers did not read the whole book.
Truly.
What a shame.
I love books like this one.
You are taken on a journey, you enter the world of the author, and putting the book down is difficult because you do not want to leave that world.
And the best is yet to come...
I found this to be one of those books that changed me.
His words resonated in my soul.
In a few sentences, Martel gave voice to things I sensed in my life, but could not place into words.
When we read for something beyond mere entertainment...
isn't that what we hunger for?
A chance to see life from a new point of view.
To feel renewed.
A book that will follow you after you have finished it.
A book that MUST stay with you on your bookshelf.
LIFE OF PI is my silent friend now, on a shelf of honor in my book collection.
A new friend who will be there with me on this life's journey...
ready to speak to my heart any time I lift it from the shelf, open the pages, and invite the author to speak to me, yet again.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Yann Martel
Here is an excellent resource about the birth of this novel written by Yann Martel (and just fascinating in general to any writer about the process of preparing oneself to create a work of fiction). If you plan on reading LIFE OF PI, read the author's notes AFTER completing the book:

Leaves you thinking about it long after you are finishedReview Date: 2008-09-19
Part One is explaining how the author came upon the story and the childhood of the main character. It gives you insights into Pi Patels life that help you understand the rest of the book. This part is interesting and is helpful in setting up part two.
Part Two tells us how he and his family are on a cargo ship that sinks and he ends up a lone human in a boat with a Bengal tiger, a hyena, an orangatan and a zebra with a broken leg. After the hyena has attacked the zebra and the orangatan, the tiger attacks the hyena. The rest is an adventure of how this teenage boy survives 227 floating in the ocean. Though I must admit parts of this section does tend to drag on, it is not too horrible to keep reading. Especially since you are dying to know how it ends.
Part three offers a second more probable story, that makes you rethink the whole book and will leave you thinking about the book long after you are finished and searching for anyone who has also read it so you can discuss it with them.
This is a great book to read in a book club (and I highly suggest it.) As for it making you believe in God, that is up to the reader to decided!
A masterpiece!Review Date: 2008-09-15
I remember when I watched the movie 12 monkeys, that in the end you start 'reviewing' the whole movie because you understand that is something completely different, so in a way it was 2 movies in 1. The same happened with The Life of Pi.... I had to re-think everything to make a second interpretation of what I had really read on the first place.

Good examples are given such as John Gottman's marital study of 700 engaged couples. Gottman concluded after just a 15 minute video of each couple's interaction, which couples marriages would end in divorce. His predictions, 10 years later, were over 90% accurate, clearly illustrating the necessity to fill buckets with praise, rather than drain them with nagging and negative interactions. Perhaps a good indication of our current 50% divorce rate.
I actually purchased the book on CD and it came with some additional web-based free content, which I have not yet looked at. I can only assume the book carries the same additional access. My one knock on this CD set is, even though it is unabridged, it is only about 3 hours total. More information in the form of case studies and implementation would have added greater value.
I believe this book would be helpful in many different situations, but would particularly recommend it for business leaders, married couples and parents.

I felt very comfortable listening to these two women - two doctors - discuss back and forth the subjects covered. Maybe it is because I have over 25 yrs in the medical field but I felt like I was sitting with two friends in the doctors lounge listening to them brainstorm on different cases and situations.
I found these CDs hugely entertaining, informatative and uplifting. I got it...actually got it....for the first time maybe.
This is what it is....if you read the description. It is not a textbook style obviously but still gets huge amounts of information across to the listener. All my girlfriends/daughters are borrowing my CD at work. None have been disappointed at all. It's not just on female subjects either - wonderful info for both sexes.
I have even scheduled an appt with Dr Schulz....can't wait !!
Thanks to them both for all that they do.

The Trouble with HarryReview Date: 2008-09-19
The character called Harry Miller is an interesting guy. He's married to a famous stage actress, and he does things not so famous, more like infamous, to his enemies.
He serves the British government in black ops and naturally enough gets mixed up with Sean Dillon himself, no less, and his motley crew. Before you know it, all hell breaks loose as the lot of them meet up with Russian assassins, IRA hit men, radical Islamic terrorists, and assorted thugs.
Between rubouts, Sean Dillon takes time to become romantically involved in this outing. But don't mistake "Rough Justice" for a romance. It's a thriller through and through--and a blood-soaked one at that. Admittedly, there's a cast of hundreds, but they dovetail smoothly, in fact especially so for readers who've read Jack Higgins's previous Sean Dillon books in the series. If you're aching to devour a lean mean thriller, you couldn't do better than this one. Not an ounce of fat on it.

4 1/2 starsReview Date: 2007-03-19
I bought this set because I had used Pimsleur to learn Russian several years ago, and I found the Russian set effective. Like the Russian lessons, these Arabic CD's are good too.
The Pimsleur philosophy involves repetition, and starts out with practical words to learn. Often when I encounter foreign-language educational media, the words being taught are not the most important to be learned first. Also, often I encounter rote memorization. But not with the Pimsleur CD's, everything is built around sentences and phrases and conversation. When you first come to a country, you want to know how to say, "excuse me" or "can you speak English," etc. I only wish the Pimsleur CD's included things like "How much does this cost" or numbers.
One thing which would also be nice is an accompanying booklet, just to see what the words look like in print. Arabic uses a different script as you may know, so this is difficult, since many Arabic consonants are not found in English, (making it difficult to write in Latin script) or there might be two different consonants which represent the same sound, only one is given more emphasis; for example there is "seen," soft "s" like "sit" and "Saud," a louder "S" like in "Snake." And then there is "ayn" and "ghayn" etc. which have no equivalent but sometimes show up in words in the Pimsleur CDs.
But it is part of the Pimsleur philosophy that you learn the language like the native speakers do: by speaking first. But I think it is a good idea to have some printed material as well, because the speakers are not always 100% clear. Plus I think they use vernacular: for example, they will say "kif ek" for "how are you" to a lady, but elsewhere I see "kif halak." Also "nayn" instead of "ithnayn" for "two."
At some points there is a steep learning curve; probably the first one you encounter is where you have to pronounce "good morning;" "sabaH al-khayr" which needs lots of work to get right, and I don't think enough time is spent in the lesson. Although there is plenty of repetition in the CD's, I recommend going through each lesson 4 or 5 times before proceeding to the next. Or, as I do, stagger the lessons so it doesn't become too boring; for example in the following order: 1,1,1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2,3,2,3,2,3, etc.
A small annoyance you might find with these CD's, if you're female, is that in some cases, the narrator asks for a response from you and then when the native speaker repeats the correct answer, it is given in masculine form only. So if you are a female, it is not the correct response. In many cases, the CD's will offer both responses, but not always.
One last small annoyance is that the package does not make clear what dialect of Arabic is taught on the CD's. It is the Syrian/Lebanese dialect. They should make this clear on the package.
But overall, I was pleased with this product.

Surprisingly movingReview Date: 2008-10-07
The book was so engrossing, I purchased it and had it completely read in a single weekend.
It's hard to describe the emotions this book stirred up. Anger, remorse, pride, all of these things. And joy at discovering someone making a daring escape. Sorrow when learning that the person being interviewed has lost a bit of his or her mind because of what they've been through.
I didn't know what to expect when I purchased this book. Not really. I have had the Zombie Survival Guide for a while. When I bought it, it was in the "humor" section. "World War Z" took the tongue-in-cheek approach from that book and turned it on its head, taking itself completely seriously and *pulling it off!*
Only a few bits of data truly date the story (such as Fidel Castro being around at the end of the war).
The audio-book will be my next purchase. I've heard the few clips from the website and I feel that will give the story even more impact.

An excellent and original take on a tired ideaReview Date: 2008-10-01
World War Z is that most beloved of Hollywood ideas, 'high concept'. One of those ideas that makes other writers go away smacking themselves in the head thinking, "Why didn't I think of that?" Zombies are very much 'in' these days, but after several years of zombie movies and computer games the appeal was waning, until Brooks' interesting take on the concept revitalised interest. Most zombie fiction is somewhat nihilistic, ending with the world overrun by the undead hordes or humanity reduced to tiny enclaves battling the mindless hordes, so the fact that World War Z features a victory is interesting enough. The stories of what sacrifices were necessary to achieve that victory makes up the book, which is essentially a 'mosaic' novel rather than a standard work of fiction. The book shifts between the different interviewees, some of whom appear only once but most of them reappear periodically throughout the book, as we find out how they survived the decade of the war and what happened to them along the way.
It's an excellent device and Brooks employs it skillfully. Some of the stories border on the silly - the blind Japanese gardener taking on the zombie hordes with a sword in a park full of traps stretches credulity - but elsewhere Brooks nails the feeling of total horror, with the computer nerd trying to flee his infested Japanese apartment block or the soldiers fighting to clear the catacombs under Paris. Elsewhere Brooks takes the capabilities of the zombie menace to their logical conclusion, with heavily-armoured divers fighting off zombie forces underwater, or the US army making full use of dogs (who are driven wild by the presence of zombies) in fighting the hordes and the fates of both the animals and their handlers during and after the war.
This is a widescreen story, with a truly global perspective, told economically and well. There are some good laughs (the new US zombie-dispatching firearm is nicknamed a 'Meg', as it resembles a Megatron toy from Transformers; during one battle a nun and REM lead singer Michael Stipe help fight off the zombie hordes), but Brooks takes his subject mostly seriously and sounds some cautionary notes along the way. To some extent the story isn't really about the zombies, but about people and what they are capable of when their backs are against the wall.
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (*****) is a gripping, page-turning, memorable read which throws some fresh impetus on an old idea, and makes it work brilliantly. The book is available in the UK from Duckworth and in the USA from Three Rivers Press. A movie version is in development, with a script being written by Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski.

Entertaining and Regrettably NOT UnbelievableReview Date: 2008-10-03
If I had a criticism it would be that, although the author convincingly shows how elements of Nazism splintered, survived, flourished, made inroads as well as became absorbed by various American institutions; he conflicts with his own argument stating that National Socialism is the danger, while simultaneously, Plutocratic Interests also are the danger. It can be followed that one begat the other, they developed along separate paths and intertwined at some later point. Marrs keeps citing that one is the issue, yet both are competing conspiracies or more likely one dominant and one subordinate.
I enjoyed this book immensely for it's odyssey on "what is wrong with America and how we got here", particularly for all the ground he covers. I think everyone should read this (at a minimum) just for the challenging ideas it presents. I felt it plugged up a lot of holes in my historical vocabulary.
Rise of The Fourth ReichReview Date: 2008-09-28
The Nazi influence can be traced back to rise of the party in Germany with the help of prominent American elite families. Their motives appear to have been the root of all "evile" as with most things:monetary. Whether you are an avid conspiracy buff or just want to see a different side to the story, you must admit that Mr Marrs presents a a well thought out, rational case explaining the methods and reasons why world events happening right now seem to be unfolding at a rapid pace.
National Socialism may indeed be happening in the US right now. Our individual freedoms seem to be taken away day-by-day in small unoticeable amounts until one day we wake up and find out that George Orwell was right on the money and 1984 is here (again).
I encourage people to read this book and also "Rule By Secrecy" and form their own opinions. At the very least these books may make you stop and think that there may be another reason why world events are happening other than the information told to us by mainstream media outlets.
