For me, I found this book helpful. Her 4 step process has stuck with me, and I hear her voice asking those questions in my head.
I feel the book has helped to bring me peace. Hope it may do the same for you.

I have been working to become more present in my life for the last six years, ever since reading "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. His books, "The Power of Now" and "The New Earth", have led me to powerful insights into how I create pain in my life, but it wasn't until being introduced to Byron Katie's book, "Loving What Is", that the pieces really began to fall into place.

I began doing "the work" three weeks ago, shortly before my daughter went off to college, leaving my husband and me with an empty nest. From the first day on, I was able to challenge my thoughts of grieving and loss and see where I could go from this point on. I have been greatly energized by the process.

I also found it helpful to listen to the audio book in conjunction with the written format. I learned more from hearing Katie do the work than by reading it. [...]

Byron Katie is one of my favorite people

This book helped to change my life in such a positive direction, I've bought it on CD (something I don't normally do because I can't stand audio books) and now, in paperback form. I've checked it out from the library many, many times. It really is *that* good.

I can't say I've actually done The Work on paper. I do it in my head (not something she recommends, I don't think), but it's just as effective for me. You don't have to read this book from cover-to-cover to reap benefits. You don't have to devote hours to doing the introspection. If you want to leave your past in the Past, but practice thinking in ways that improve the Present and Future, this book is just as useful.

I am truly grateful for this book's existence. It's one of the three books I'd take with me if I had to escape my burning house, simply because I sometimes need gentle reminders and it is very good at being just that. I have recommended this book to several friends (and burned copies for them) and they've all felt it helped them.

I hope it benefits you, as well.

My shrink suggested I read this book so I bought it and tried to read it. I've only been able to get through a quarter of the book so far because the main message seems to be: "It's not what happened to you, it's how you look at what happened, so forgive the person who hurt you and let it go."

I guess that's a nice idea but I don't think that works under all circumstanaces. I mean if somebody hurt you very badly, it may be nice to forgive them but I'm not sure that helps to keep it from happening again.

I would like to make sure I take better care of myself by keeping it from happening again and just looking at something differently doesn't really seem to do that. I've forgiven myself for letting it happen but I want to make sure it doesn't happen again. How does looking at something differently do that?

On reflection...

I first read this book some years ago and was quite struck with it, and for a while I was enthusiastic about using the four questions. The problem was that after a while I knew that I was really getting anywhere because there would always be more thoughts to be questioned and I simply didn't have the time or space to spend my life scribbling away day after day. Also the turnarounds felt a bit forced and nothing much changed in my life. The problem with this 'system' is that it isn't practical and that it seems to offer some vague hope of enlightenment; that one day you will find 'the ultimate' turnaround and then you will be just like BK, on cloud nine, never getting angry, at one with everything. This is totally unrealistic and not actually desirable. Maybe I approached it the wrong way because I wanted to 'get something out of it'. The point though, is that the four questions miss the point - whether a thought is true or not isn't the point, and nobody can live not believing in anything and turning everything back to themselves, and that's why I think the work is a bit silly and possibly a bit dangerous. If you want to read something more balanced and sensible, and in my experience a lot more effective, please try Come to Your Senses by Stanley Block. His theory is a step up from whether something is true or not, because we are so much more than just a set of beliefs or non-beliefs.

Wow, where did Yann Martel come from? This author has an extraordinary ability to use the English language to convey thought, emotion, and physical experiences in such a profound way. He turns words into music. The story is both gentle and shattering, both tragic and ecstatic, both carnal and spiritual. I felt as though I was having a firsthand experience right alongside the protagonist, Pi Patel, whose involuntary adventure is both uniquely original and subliminally familiar. I will remember this book fondly for many years to come.

Sometimes a reader is graced with what I like to call:

The right book at the right time.

LIFE OF PI is that book.

If you are in the appetite for a plot driven tale of survival you will find that here.

And if you hunger for a spiritual journey revealing the inner workings of human nature... that's also available at this banquet of fiction.

I read a few reviews of LIFE OF PI... and I am thinking that some of the reviewers did not read the whole book.

Truly.

What a shame.

I love books like this one.

You are taken on a journey, you enter the world of the author, and putting the book down is difficult because you do not want to leave that world.

And the best is yet to come...

I found this to be one of those books that changed me.

His words resonated in my soul.

In a few sentences, Martel gave voice to things I sensed in my life, but could not place into words.

When we read for something beyond mere entertainment...

isn't that what we hunger for?

A chance to see life from a new point of view.

To feel renewed.

A book that will follow you after you have finished it.

A book that MUST stay with you on your bookshelf.

LIFE OF PI is my silent friend now, on a shelf of honor in my book collection.

A new friend who will be there with me on this life's journey...

ready to speak to my heart any time I lift it from the shelf, open the pages, and invite the author to speak to me, yet again.

Yann Martel

Here is an excellent resource about the birth of this novel written by Yann Martel (and just fascinating in general to any writer about the process of preparing oneself to create a work of fiction). If you plan on reading LIFE OF PI, read the author's notes AFTER completing the book:

This is a totally different kind of book than I've ever read. As many others have said, this book is written in three parts.

Part One is explaining how the author came upon the story and the childhood of the main character. It gives you insights into Pi Patels life that help you understand the rest of the book. This part is interesting and is helpful in setting up part two.

Part Two tells us how he and his family are on a cargo ship that sinks and he ends up a lone human in a boat with a Bengal tiger, a hyena, an orangatan and a zebra with a broken leg. After the hyena has attacked the zebra and the orangatan, the tiger attacks the hyena. The rest is an adventure of how this teenage boy survives 227 floating in the ocean. Though I must admit parts of this section does tend to drag on, it is not too horrible to keep reading. Especially since you are dying to know how it ends.

Part three offers a second more probable story, that makes you rethink the whole book and will leave you thinking about the book long after you are finished and searching for anyone who has also read it so you can discuss it with them.

This is a great book to read in a book club (and I highly suggest it.) As for it making you believe in God, that is up to the reader to decided!

A masterpiece!

This is really an amazing story! Completely original in its plot and all the characters on it.... Its really 3 books into 1, the first part being very funny and adorable, the second part being the most amazing experience a human can have at sea... with a TIGER (no more explanation needed)! And then the end, where you are challenged to rethink the whole book, and its up to you in what you believe or want to believe in the end, and maybe that is the 'message' that lingers on after you've finished it.

I remember when I watched the movie 12 monkeys, that in the end you start 'reviewing' the whole movie because you understand that is something completely different, so in a way it was 2 movies in 1. The same happened with The Life of Pi.... I had to re-think everything to make a second interpretation of what I had really read on the first place.

Check it out from library... Do not waste money

We see so much on this idea of being, acting and feeling positive. The use of 'bucket' as a metaphor really works showing you how you put in and take out of your 'bucket'. Great book and similar to the Law of attraction. Read Living The Secret Everyday: My Secret Workbook that deals with positive thoughts that activate beliefs and then having the positive attitude attracting other positive experiences, people and things into your life.

This is an interesting little book and easy to read. If you get anything from this book, it will be to share positive thoughts and comments with your co-workers, family and friends. The author emphasizes how a positive comment can encourage and motivate a person to be the best they can be, while a negative one can bring them down. I was left wishing I had practiced "bucket filling" earlier in my life, but going forward will take what I have learned and hopefully be a positive influence on the people in my life.

A quick read, this book provides a fairly straight-forward approach to improving our environments and interactions in work and in life. Using the metaphor of "the dipper and the bucket," the authors present their research-backed (and commonsense) theory that people do best in environments that fill---rather than drain---them. People who loved "Who Moved My Cheese?" and "The Secret" will likely eat up this book as well. Although the theory may at times be a bit too simplified and watered-down (sorry to rain on the positive parade), it provides a good reminder of what makes us tick---and what ticks us off.

HOW FULL IS YOUR BUCKET by Tom Rath and Donald O. Clifton explores the benefits of positive reinforcement in business, scholastic, marital and other settings. This is an easy read with sound information presented in ways that are applicable immediately. The work focuses on the premise that we each have our own bucket. Positive reinforcement, given or received, fills the bucket. Negative interaction, given or received, dips out of our bucket.

Good examples are given such as John Gottman's marital study of 700 engaged couples. Gottman concluded after just a 15 minute video of each couple's interaction, which couples marriages would end in divorce. His predictions, 10 years later, were over 90% accurate, clearly illustrating the necessity to fill buckets with praise, rather than drain them with nagging and negative interactions. Perhaps a good indication of our current 50% divorce rate.

I actually purchased the book on CD and it came with some additional web-based free content, which I have not yet looked at. I can only assume the book carries the same additional access. My one knock on this CD set is, even though it is unabridged, it is only about 3 hours total. More information in the form of case studies and implementation would have added greater value.

I believe this book would be helpful in many different situations, but would particularly recommend it for business leaders, married couples and parents.

All this is is a conversation between the two women. I was hoping to receive enlightening education to deepen my knowledge, but the bulk of the first two CDs (admittedly all I could muster through) were just anecdotal case studies and two women fighting over control of the mic. Save your money -- unless you like to hear inspiring healing stories wrapped in gossipy chatter.

Intutitive Listening. What could be more important in our lives today. Who better guiding men/woman through this very important area of all our lives. Dr's Northup and Schulz guide us with out "EGO" based learning/teaching. We have here two very skilled woman well educated in the topic. Directed, using no "EGO" delivering the message. Using their own personal lives as examples, years of learning/teaching/helping, searching for them selves as well as all of us, makes this a must have for couples, men, woman. Dr's Northup and Schulz helped in clearing away much of the wonderment in the Body Genius and relationships/partnerships.
Light a fire, pour a glass of wine, sit back and welcome to the wonderment called Igniting Intuition Unearthing Body Genius, you will be happy you did.

I gave "Intuitive Listening" 4 stars. I find it essential to wellness to have as much understanding as possible of Mind/Body connections. I especially enjoy Dr. Schultz, and I wish she would present a book on tape by herself. I find Dr. Schultz to be brilliant, and I do not tire of hearing her insights. Dr. Northrup has much knowledge too, but many of her interruptions were extremely distracting to me. Yes, some were for clarification, and some seemed to me to be just so she would be heard. For example "back talk and talk back." Also, the carrying on about the "unit" was ridiculous to me. I value the information on these tapes, and I have listened to them numerous times.
Yes, I did find a few of Dr. Northrup's comments to be both insightful and meaningful. However, I mainly wanted to say, "Please hush, and let Dr. Schultz teach." I love the case presentations, and I would love to hear a book on tape by Dr. Schultz of case presentations alone.

Just finished this CD series and the Igniting Intuition one....
I felt very comfortable listening to these two women - two doctors - discuss back and forth the subjects covered. Maybe it is because I have over 25 yrs in the medical field but I felt like I was sitting with two friends in the doctors lounge listening to them brainstorm on different cases and situations.

I found these CDs hugely entertaining, informatative and uplifting. I got it...actually got it....for the first time maybe.

This is what it is....if you read the description. It is not a textbook style obviously but still gets huge amounts of information across to the listener. All my girlfriends/daughters are borrowing my CD at work. None have been disappointed at all. It's not just on female subjects either - wonderful info for both sexes.
I have even scheduled an appt with Dr Schulz....can't wait !!
Thanks to them both for all that they do.

Fete of Death
The character called Harry Miller is an interesting guy. He's married to a famous stage actress, and he does things not so famous, more like infamous, to his enemies.

He serves the British government in black ops and naturally enough gets mixed up with Sean Dillon himself, no less, and his motley crew. Before you know it, all hell breaks loose as the lot of them meet up with Russian assassins, IRA hit men, radical Islamic terrorists, and assorted thugs.

Between rubouts, Sean Dillon takes time to become romantically involved in this outing. But don't mistake "Rough Justice" for a romance. It's a thriller through and through--and a blood-soaked one at that. Admittedly, there's a cast of hundreds, but they dovetail smoothly, in fact especially so for readers who've read Jack Higgins's previous Sean Dillon books in the series. If you're aching to devour a lean mean thriller, you couldn't do better than this one. Not an ounce of fat on it.

I was probably 25 pages or so into Rough Justice before I realized that several years ago I vowed never again to read a Jack Higgins novel. This time I will not forget. What an utter waste of time. I think I might have enjoyed it were I a slightly dull Seventh Grader.

The plot was razor thin; the characters were not believable; and the outcome was easily predictable. It was about as profound as a Mack Sennett comedy with the Keystone Kops.

This is a 10-lesson set on 5 CD's, 1/2 hour per lesson. The lessons have an English-speaking narrator with two native speakers, a man and a woman.

I bought this set because I had used Pimsleur to learn Russian several years ago, and I found the Russian set effective. Like the Russian lessons, these Arabic CD's are good too.

The Pimsleur philosophy involves repetition, and starts out with practical words to learn. Often when I encounter foreign-language educational media, the words being taught are not the most important to be learned first. Also, often I encounter rote memorization. But not with the Pimsleur CD's, everything is built around sentences and phrases and conversation. When you first come to a country, you want to know how to say, "excuse me" or "can you speak English," etc. I only wish the Pimsleur CD's included things like "How much does this cost" or numbers.

One thing which would also be nice is an accompanying booklet, just to see what the words look like in print. Arabic uses a different script as you may know, so this is difficult, since many Arabic consonants are not found in English, (making it difficult to write in Latin script) or there might be two different consonants which represent the same sound, only one is given more emphasis; for example there is "seen," soft "s" like "sit" and "Saud," a louder "S" like in "Snake." And then there is "ayn" and "ghayn" etc. which have no equivalent but sometimes show up in words in the Pimsleur CDs.

But it is part of the Pimsleur philosophy that you learn the language like the native speakers do: by speaking first. But I think it is a good idea to have some printed material as well, because the speakers are not always 100% clear. Plus I think they use vernacular: for example, they will say "kif ek" for "how are you" to a lady, but elsewhere I see "kif halak." Also "nayn" instead of "ithnayn" for "two."

At some points there is a steep learning curve; probably the first one you encounter is where you have to pronounce "good morning;" "sabaH al-khayr" which needs lots of work to get right, and I don't think enough time is spent in the lesson. Although there is plenty of repetition in the CD's, I recommend going through each lesson 4 or 5 times before proceeding to the next. Or, as I do, stagger the lessons so it doesn't become too boring; for example in the following order: 1,1,1,2,1,2,1,2,1,2,3,2,3,2,3, etc.

A small annoyance you might find with these CD's, if you're female, is that in some cases, the narrator asks for a response from you and then when the native speaker repeats the correct answer, it is given in masculine form only. So if you are a female, it is not the correct response. In many cases, the CD's will offer both responses, but not always.

One last small annoyance is that the package does not make clear what dialect of Arabic is taught on the CD's. It is the Syrian/Lebanese dialect. They should make this clear on the package.

But overall, I was pleased with this product.

For a book with they "silly" premise of a zombie uprising threatening all of humanity, the stories contained within are poignant, touching, and most important believable.

The book was so engrossing, I purchased it and had it completely read in a single weekend.

It's hard to describe the emotions this book stirred up. Anger, remorse, pride, all of these things. And joy at discovering someone making a daring escape. Sorrow when learning that the person being interviewed has lost a bit of his or her mind because of what they've been through.

I didn't know what to expect when I purchased this book. Not really. I have had the Zombie Survival Guide for a while. When I bought it, it was in the "humor" section. "World War Z" took the tongue-in-cheek approach from that book and turned it on its head, taking itself completely seriously and *pulling it off!*

Only a few bits of data truly date the story (such as Fidel Castro being around at the end of the war).

The audio-book will be my next purchase. I've heard the few clips from the website and I feel that will give the story even more impact.

This book makes you see how the war against the living dead was seen on several fronts. Highly recommended, a must have.

WWZ is the first piece of zombie anything that actually scared me! It's not just the horrifying way the Zeds are described, but the collapse of society that sends a realistically chilling shudder through you. A must have for any fan of horror!

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK. IT STARTS OFF A LITTLE SLOW BUT PICKS UP QUICKLY. ITS IS COMPRISED OF SHORT STORIES THAT TIE TOGETHER. THE AUTHOR IS A TRUE ZOMBIE FAN SO THE BOOK IS VERY WELL THOUGHT OUT. MAX BROOKS HAS SET THE BAR VERY HIGH WITH TRADITIONAL ZOMBIES.

An excellent and original take on a tired idea

It's finally happened. The zombie apocalypse has come and devastated civilisation...but in the end, civilisation rallied and won. Using tactics pioneered in South Africa and bankrolled by Cuba, the largest nation to remain infection-free, the world's armies successfully defeated the undead menace, but only at a staggering cost in lives and resources. Ten years after victory was declared, a journalist travels the world, listening to the stories of the survivors, from those who were there when the outbreak began to those who listened in the corridors of power as key decisions were taken to the stories of everyday men and women thrust into circumstances beyond their control. From Hawaii to China, even to the isolated crew of the International Space Station, this is the story of that war.

World War Z is that most beloved of Hollywood ideas, 'high concept'. One of those ideas that makes other writers go away smacking themselves in the head thinking, "Why didn't I think of that?" Zombies are very much 'in' these days, but after several years of zombie movies and computer games the appeal was waning, until Brooks' interesting take on the concept revitalised interest. Most zombie fiction is somewhat nihilistic, ending with the world overrun by the undead hordes or humanity reduced to tiny enclaves battling the mindless hordes, so the fact that World War Z features a victory is interesting enough. The stories of what sacrifices were necessary to achieve that victory makes up the book, which is essentially a 'mosaic' novel rather than a standard work of fiction. The book shifts between the different interviewees, some of whom appear only once but most of them reappear periodically throughout the book, as we find out how they survived the decade of the war and what happened to them along the way.

It's an excellent device and Brooks employs it skillfully. Some of the stories border on the silly - the blind Japanese gardener taking on the zombie hordes with a sword in a park full of traps stretches credulity - but elsewhere Brooks nails the feeling of total horror, with the computer nerd trying to flee his infested Japanese apartment block or the soldiers fighting to clear the catacombs under Paris. Elsewhere Brooks takes the capabilities of the zombie menace to their logical conclusion, with heavily-armoured divers fighting off zombie forces underwater, or the US army making full use of dogs (who are driven wild by the presence of zombies) in fighting the hordes and the fates of both the animals and their handlers during and after the war.

This is a widescreen story, with a truly global perspective, told economically and well. There are some good laughs (the new US zombie-dispatching firearm is nicknamed a 'Meg', as it resembles a Megatron toy from Transformers; during one battle a nun and REM lead singer Michael Stipe help fight off the zombie hordes), but Brooks takes his subject mostly seriously and sounds some cautionary notes along the way. To some extent the story isn't really about the zombies, but about people and what they are capable of when their backs are against the wall.

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (*****) is a gripping, page-turning, memorable read which throws some fresh impetus on an old idea, and makes it work brilliantly. The book is available in the UK from Duckworth and in the USA from Three Rivers Press. A movie version is in development, with a script being written by Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski.

I havent fully finished the book but it is hard to put it down. Ive read much of this info in other sources as well and beleive it to be true based on my studies thru the years.. At first it is very troubling to find so much disception in high places and such arrogance in the elites and powerbrokers who pull the strings seemingly whichever way they want but in the final analysis as a christian i still beleive and find comfort in the fact that God is ultimately in control and the powergrabbing filthy rich control freaks will be frustrated and twarted if not in this life then in the one to come.. Hitler just knew his 3rd reich would last 1000 years and it only lasted about 20 years, yes the seeds live on and find fertile soil to grow in , sometimes in the most unlikely places..the earth is full of wheat and tares, this book is a chronicle of such...

Jim Marrs writes a completely fascinating look at how the infamous Third Reich survived and transformed into a mutated variation that survives today in modern America. The reader will be amazed as he pulls the curtain back to expose what the real reason might have been behind Ruldoph Hess's mystery flight to England in May 1941, as well as exposing just how far the Nazi's were in their "wonder weapons" research and development - a lot farther along than the Western Allies tend to give credit. Without spoiling the suspense, find out whose uranium was actually used in the developement and dropping of the 1st atomic bomb on Hiroshima. As a PhD in History, I highly recommend reading especially for those interested in revisionist World War II history!

I read this book in a weekend and couldn't bring myself to put it down. The case made by the author at first seems like fantastic fiction, but alarmingly, as the chapters begin to relate to events closer to current history you begin to feel the rug being pulled out from underneath you.

If I had a criticism it would be that, although the author convincingly shows how elements of Nazism splintered, survived, flourished, made inroads as well as became absorbed by various American institutions; he conflicts with his own argument stating that National Socialism is the danger, while simultaneously, Plutocratic Interests also are the danger. It can be followed that one begat the other, they developed along separate paths and intertwined at some later point. Marrs keeps citing that one is the issue, yet both are competing conspiracies or more likely one dominant and one subordinate.

I enjoyed this book immensely for it's odyssey on "what is wrong with America and how we got here", particularly for all the ground he covers. I think everyone should read this (at a minimum) just for the challenging ideas it presents. I felt it plugged up a lot of holes in my historical vocabulary.

I have read most of Mr. Marrs' books and have found them all to be well thought out, somewhat unbiased and well written. There is an obvious large amount of research and detail that has gone into the writing of all his works. The Rise of The Fourth Reich gives great background accounts leading up to present day America starting from pre-WW II and the rise of the original Third Reich. Mr Marrs has given, what seems accurate detail and substantiated accounts, that many Nazi's, including Hitler, escaped death and thrived all over the world post WW II. Much of our country's policies and motives could very well be linked to this subtle, shadow Nazi influence. You decide for yourself.

The Nazi influence can be traced back to rise of the party in Germany with the help of prominent American elite families. Their motives appear to have been the root of all "evile" as with most things:monetary. Whether you are an avid conspiracy buff or just want to see a different side to the story, you must admit that Mr Marrs presents a a well thought out, rational case explaining the methods and reasons why world events happening right now seem to be unfolding at a rapid pace.

National Socialism may indeed be happening in the US right now. Our individual freedoms seem to be taken away day-by-day in small unoticeable amounts until one day we wake up and find out that George Orwell was right on the money and 1984 is here (again).

I encourage people to read this book and also "Rule By Secrecy" and form their own opinions. At the very least these books may make you stop and think that there may be another reason why world events are happening other than the information told to us by mainstream media outlets.

This book is extensively sourced and footnoted, making it easy enough to verify the allegations for yourself if you are so inclined. I took a few weeks to go through this book and was able to trace many of the key assertions. Sadly, the Bush Administration has moved us closer to National Socialism than I would have thought possible and the current Wall Street bailout stands as stark evidence to this fact. From the structure or our educational system to the use of propaganda, our country is moving in a direction that our Founding Fathers would not have expected or supported. If you approach this book with an open mind, you will learn a great deal. The author's writing style is clear, lucid and entertaining. Prepare to be shocked and appalled.

My husband is Iranian and I am Brazilian. We purchased the Farsi and the Brazilian Portuguese Language programs so we can learn each other's language. It has been great. We are both impressed with each other's ability to communicate in a different language. The learning method is easy, with great instructions on pronunciation, and participation in the dialogues. We are very happy with our Pimsler Language Programs. We highly recommend it.

Clearly meets expectations. I suggest playing the CDs over and over again, twenty minutes or so at a time--distributed sessions. The Farsi words will simply sink in without effort. The best thing about this CD is the very clear pronunciation. It's done very slowly and clearly, and then the Farsi speakers speed up for many more tries at normal speech level. It's basic, but good.
