The Lion lies Down with the Lamb...and Has A Heckuva Good Time, BuckleyReview Date: 2008-10-12
Supreme SatireReview Date: 2008-10-10
Without being a spoiler, and revealing any more of the plot than has already been revealed, I would like to say that the characters are somewhat stereotypical, but then the book is satire.
There are quite a few plot surprises, however, I was able to predict one of the major plot elements.
The only difficult part was understanding some of the legalese, but then that too is satire.
Good storyteller and good narrator = GOOD listeningReview Date: 2008-10-10
The havoc that ensues is political satire at its finest and driest. Buckley mercilessly skewers everything political from presidential campaigns to lobbyists to the overweening egos of Supreme Court justices. He even throws in an oh-so-thinly disguised parody of a certain senator from Connecticut that will make Republicans snort into their coffee.
Anne Heche's reading is the stuff that dreams are made of. Heche breathes such life into each character's individual accent and manner of speaking that it is easy to forget that only one person is speaking. All are brought to life vividly and believably. Buckley himself couldn't have hand-picked a better voice as the narrator: Heche manages to wring every ounce of dry humor from each satirical sentence.
Supreme Courtship is a breath of fresh air in a year bedeviled with financial crises and political wrangling.
Armchair Interviews says: Supreme Courtship is an outstandingly funny political satire made even more memorable by Anne Heche's stellar performance.

rob's best book yetReview Date: 2008-10-08
personally, i tire quickly of rob's single-sentence paragraphs, found in strings on most pages. it's a neat literary device to use occasionally. but it grows old for me.
but, other than that minor issue (which readers of other rob bell books will certainly recognize - maybe he's attempting to write in twitter boxes of 140 words or less?), this is a profoundly good book that will certainly impact my thinking from here on out.
here are a few choice sentences that captured my imagination:
jesus wants to save us from making the good news about another world and not this one.
jesus wants to save us from preaching a gospel that is only about individuals and not about the systems that enslave them.
jesus wants to save us from shrinking the gospel down to a transaction about the removal of sin and not about every single particle of creation being reconciled to its maker.
jesus want to save us from religiously sanctioned despair, the kind that doesn't believe the world can be made better, the kind that either blatently or subtly teaches people to just be quiet and behave and wait for something to happen "someday."

Too much literature!Review Date: 2008-09-28
It's an intensely creative story populated by Funke's traditional quirky, flawed characters that give so much heart and strength to an already-awesome, fast-moving plot.
It's a fairy tale world of horror and adventure, good vs. evil and all that lies in between.

This is one of the most fun and imaginative books I've come across in a long time. The characters are well drawn, the action is compelling, and it is just fun to turn the pages to see what is on the other side of each piece of paper. For lovers of books and those who are just getting into reading this is a great piece of fiction. Parents it is a bit intense for very young readers, but for adoloscents to people in their Golden Years I highly recommend this memorable book.

The book Heaven by Randy Alcorn on CDReview Date: 2008-09-29

So Good... It HurtsReview Date: 2008-09-22
Many people believe that heaven is an unfamiliar place where we immediatly adjust to a new lifstyle; playing harps and polishing golden streets. These people believe we will not have fun or be creative. They believe we'll be slaving to do God's will and loose all desire to think independantly. And worst of all, these people believe we will have no memories, and everything (from entertainment to friends) will no longer be the same.
That view of heaven makes me want to blip out of existance, rather than go there. I'm a God fearing Christian. I never seriously considered heaven, even though I've thought long and hard about death. Although I'll die one day, I never considered what I will have to look forwards to. Randy Alcorn has saved me from despare.
Randy Alcorn discribes heaven with amazing detail. He discribes it as a place full of adventure, oppertunity, fun and friendships. The number one thing Christians desire is to see God in heaven. Randy agrees... but that's only the begining.
He says heaven will be a familiar place, and we will remember all our happy experiences from the old Earth. Not only that; but we will continue doing whatever work we love. We will be happy and satisfied 24/7. But we will also have willpower to make decisions as we go on living for all eternity. We will also be allowed to keep our old friends and make thousands of new ones.
Using a combination of scripture and logic, Randy Alcorn beautifully constructed this book. Even if you question his ideas, he said he welcomes your debate so he can correct his mistakes. There's lots of references and quotes from many intelligent people.
Even though the book is very thick, the writing style is simple. It's an easy book to pick up and read from begining to end. The grammer is not complicated and the vocabulary is simple. Also, Randy Alcorn uses a lot of example stories to help you picture what the answers to your questions are. Even if you don't want to read the book cover to cover, you can skip parts your not curious to read and get to something interesting.
The book discribes heaven as a nice place. So good, it almost gives me a headache to picture it. But now that my picture of heaven is clear, death doesn't sound so disappointing. Even so, Randy Alcorn gives us a lot of reasons to enjoy life before we die. It's a very opptomistic book, and a classic everyone should read.

The third CD covers the vocabulary related to: The Fiendish and The Friendly; Body and Soul; Chaos and Control.
The fourth CD covers the vocabulary related to: Old News; Rich Man, Poor Man; The Rise and Fall.
The fifth CD covers the vocabulary related to: Church and State; Franks and Beans.

IneffectiveReview Date: 2006-12-03
I bought this product with hopes of a more enjoyable way to expand my vocabulary. I tried to like this product (especially since it's a good chunk of money) and I gave it a fair amount of my time. In the end, I found it to be ineffective for these reasons:
- The script is boring. It tries to be witty, but really comes of as cheesy/corny
- I found myself constantly rewinding. The material just doesn't sink in. The stories and dialogue aren't memorable. Perhaps this is so because of the pace. I'd rather have fewer words and actually learn those words, than sweep through many words and have to backtrack. I'd say on average the amount of time spent listening to the material was TRIPLED because of rewinding.
- The voices are a bit stuffy and robotic to me
In the end I stopped listening to Word Smart. It was just too laborious.

5th Horseman - A Definate Read!!!Review Date: 2008-09-18
Book Review: The 5th Horseman by James Patterson and Maxine PaetroReview Date: 2008-08-12
by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
Review by AMenace2Poetry
In The 5th Horseman by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro, you are taken on an unbelievable ride where you aren't helping solve one mystery; rather, two: Murders are occurring inside the San Francisco Municipal Hospital where victims are found with coins over their eyes, and there are glamorized and accessorized female bodies showing up in cars with the same perfume dabbed upon their genitalia. Join Detective Lindsay Boxer and her friends as they race against time to solve these mysteries and end these murders!
Okay, I could've told more about what happened in the book, but if I did that, it wouldn't give you any motivation to read it. I do believe, however, that if I speak of what I found captivating in the novel, you may be more prone to. So, these are my thoughts and opinions (read: emphasis on MY) about The 5th Horseman by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro.
First, I'll start with what I like to call "the positives." The book is broken up into several chapters; however, each chapter is only a page or three long, so it gives one the impression that he/she is covering more of the novel at a faster pace. The characters are great together, as if they're the best of friends. Even Det. Boxer's relationship with her boyfriend, Joe, feels "right." My favorite character was Yuki Castellano, a young lawyer whose mother has been rushed to San Francisco Municipal Hospital. She's full of emotion, and I could actually see her feelings... if that makes any sense at all.
Now, on to "the negatives." Although the book is broken up into one-three page chapters and readers are left feeling as if they have become speedsters, the book, I feel, moves too quickly. There isn't enough pausing in the book. Well, what does that mean? I don't feel that the characters are fleshed out enough, and the situations could use more time spent on them. While the characters are "good together" (for lack of a better phrase), I don't feel as if Patterson or Paetro spent enough time working out the kinks. My least favorite character was Cindy Thomas. Why? She was... again, for lack of a better phrase, annoying. While she did play the role of reporter to a T, I think there were some things she should've kept to herself as opposed to writing about it. But that's just me. You may find her to be an amazing character.
I'll stop there. I try not to overanalyze anyone's work, and I do believe that Patterson (especially) and Paetro (not especially -- never heard of her) are great authors. So, I've missed a few books within this Women's Murder Club series, but The 5th Horseman makes me feel as if I'm kept in the loop. Overall, on a scale from 1 to 5, I would rate this as a 2 1/2 or maybe lowish 3.

Normally I will read an excellent book cover to cover only taking time off to eat, sleep, and go to work.
A good book I will typically read a chapter a day, every day.
Although this book has some decent advice, it is a very dry read.
I have had for over a month now and am only a third through it.

Sure the print is large and the book is thin but how much do you need to read to realize you've got to get out there and do your work? It's common sense.
I liked the book it was just what I needed when my motivation was flagging. I figure the cost is worth what you get back and it wouldn't hurt anyone to read it once a year to stay on track. I actually also have the audio book and it fills a long drive nicely.

Well read, good enough examples/stories of how CBT and way of thinking, and some rules of this kind of (well thought out) therapy works.
I dont think that from this CD package (of 3) you can know every situation how to deal with, but enough good to get you gasoline until getting to the gas station.
By listening to it a few times in my driving time I picked up alot of clues.. and from there I picked up a book on CBT ..only after I listened to the CDs of this package I was able to read the book more fluently knowing many of the concepts. This CD tells you interesting enough situatons in the form of (real?) stories to get your attention into the learning curve easily.

How Much More Can Patterson and Cross Take? Review Date: 2008-10-07
Double Cross is certainly not the best Alex Cross novel James Patterson has written, but there is still plenty here to satisfy his rabid fans. Alex Cross himself is Patterson's most intriguing and beloved character and once again you can't help but find yourself immersed in his passion for justice. The tension Cross feels between family and duty always adds a dose of relevancy to the story drawing us even further in. The villains here are as nasty as ever, and the Audience Killer murder scenes are especially frightening and disturbing. Kyle Craig's return at first felt like a bit of a stretch to me, but I was surprised at how much I bought into this plot element as the story progressed.
As this series continues on I can't help but wonder how much more both Alex Cross and James Patterson can take. Admittedly, Patterson always finds a way to bring me back and I'm eager once again for the next installment. Let's just hope Patterson can continue to find ways to breathe new life into this fan favorite character.
Severe lack of plot and twists to keep you going...Review Date: 2008-09-03
Murder
Detectives are clueless
Murder
Detectives continue to be clueless
Murder
Detectives still have absolutely no leads and keep talking about how they have no leads
Murder
Detectives get an obscure lead that turns out to essentially be crap
Detectives are captured themselves
Detectives escape, capture one bad guy, allow the other bad guy to escape.
THE END
What turned me off about this book that usually keeps me going in the other novels is the lack of plot and suspense. The fact that the detectives have no leads or clues at all for about 90% of the book just leaves me bored! For something like that, Judge & Jury is definitely the way to go, a 5-Star!

In Colorado, Kyle Craig has plotted for years in order to set up a complex escape plan. Craig wants one thing - to get back at Alex Cross, the man who put him away. And if he needs to join forces with the Audience Killer to do this, that's just fine with him.
Can Alex solve the crimes in time to save himself, and his family? A thriller that will keep you turning the pages. Don't miss it!

Perdita "Pepper" Cartwright is a refreshing and popular television judge whom a mavericky President nominates for a spot on the SC when his two very qualified candidates are shot down by an egomaniacal senator who covets (and seeks) the job for himself.
This very humorous tale mocks the electorate and politicians, tv moguls and SC justice types; the Scalia character alone, named Silvio Santamaria (!), is worth the price of admission.
The characters are somewhat flimsily developed, sacrificed to serve the plot, the language and the humor, but then...so are P.G. Wodehouse's.
And now that Buckley has endorsed Obama, he has proven his intellectual and emotional bona fides sufficiently for me to recommend this book without reservation.
