As a progressive loyalist, I always avoided Buckley's novels. But I'm also a Supreme Court junkie AND I love Judge Judy...so how could I resist Supreme Courtship, a novel based on the proposition that all judges are not created equal, but political motivations will odd bedfellows make.

Perdita "Pepper" Cartwright is a refreshing and popular television judge whom a mavericky President nominates for a spot on the SC when his two very qualified candidates are shot down by an egomaniacal senator who covets (and seeks) the job for himself.

This very humorous tale mocks the electorate and politicians, tv moguls and SC justice types; the Scalia character alone, named Silvio Santamaria (!), is worth the price of admission.

The characters are somewhat flimsily developed, sacrificed to serve the plot, the language and the humor, but then...so are P.G. Wodehouse's.

And now that Buckley has endorsed Obama, he has proven his intellectual and emotional bona fides sufficiently for me to recommend this book without reservation.

Supreme Satire

Without a doubt, this is the funniest book that I have read in years. I found at least one good laugh on every other page - hey Chris, put some funny stuff on the even numbered pages too.

Without being a spoiler, and revealing any more of the plot than has already been revealed, I would like to say that the characters are somewhat stereotypical, but then the book is satire.

There are quite a few plot surprises, however, I was able to predict one of the major plot elements.

The only difficult part was understanding some of the legalese, but then that too is satire.

Good storyteller and good narrator = GOOD listening

"Nothing raises the national temperature more," writes Christopher Buckley in Supreme Courtship, "than a vacancy sign hanging from the colonnaded front of the Supreme Court." Fictional president Donald Vanderdamp (whose approval ratings are in the "high twenties") finds out how difficult a job filling the spot can be. Two of his stellar candidates for the seat are taken out by the head-hunting Senate Judiciary Committee. In frustration, President Vanderdamp decides to give the committee a candidate they won't dare turn down--Judge Pepper Cartwright: young, sassy, and the star of television's highest rated show, Courtroom 6.

The havoc that ensues is political satire at its finest and driest. Buckley mercilessly skewers everything political from presidential campaigns to lobbyists to the overweening egos of Supreme Court justices. He even throws in an oh-so-thinly disguised parody of a certain senator from Connecticut that will make Republicans snort into their coffee.

Anne Heche's reading is the stuff that dreams are made of. Heche breathes such life into each character's individual accent and manner of speaking that it is easy to forget that only one person is speaking. All are brought to life vividly and believably. Buckley himself couldn't have hand-picked a better voice as the narrator: Heche manages to wring every ounce of dry humor from each satirical sentence.

Supreme Courtship is a breath of fresh air in a year bedeviled with financial crises and political wrangling.

Armchair Interviews says: Supreme Courtship is an outstandingly funny political satire made even more memorable by Anne Heche's stellar performance.

Buckley's book is a quick read, but unfortunately appears to be a quick write. It has his usual great assortment of one-liners, but plot is a little too far fetched so the satire loses some of its punch.

This is a very funny book with some serious insights into how the Supremes probably go about their mysterious business. Regardless of political leaning, anyone who values first class satire will relish this one.

This book is captivating and impossible to put down even now as I approach age 30. As a girl I found it spellbinding, the kind of book that makes your own world and time dissolve around you and casts directly in the life and time of the characters. It is far to rare that an author can weave that kind of story. Elizabeth George Speare certainly has that gift. Don't hesitate to buy this for the children in your life. Also by E. G. Speare be sure and check out The Witch of Blackbird Pond and one of my all-time favorites, Calico Captive. Enjoy and keep a clock nearby as you're surely going to lose track of time while reading this book.

The voice reading Sign of the Beaver was pleasant and easy to listen to. Since I was not listening to the whole book in one sitting, it was difficult to find where on the CD I left off. It would be more efficient to have the track for each chapter labeled on the CD.

Perpetuates Stereotypes

As a fourth grade educator, I would never introduce this book to my students as anything else other than an example of popular culture that perpetuates stereotypes of Native Americans. Attean and other Native American characters speak in broken English, giving the reader the impression that these characters are inferior to their White counterparts. The terminology used is highly offensive (squaw)for both Native people and for women. The relationship that Attean has with girls in his tribe as well as with animals is unrealistic and down right inaccurate. Joseph Bruchac and Michael Dorris are two authors which do an excellent job of writing from the Native American perspective.

Great read aloud!

I have used Sign of the Beaver as a read aloud just about every year I have taught! I teach 4th grade, and have always had great reviews from my students. The text and vocabulary are advanced for some fourth graders, so it is a terrific way to expand their vocabulary and knowledge without having frustrated readers. I have collected a class set over the years, allowing every child to read along. I highly recommend this book!

I am a Rob Bell fan. After hearing Rob and Don share the pulpit at Mars Hill I am a Don Golden fan as well. This book follows in-line with the rest of Rob's work (writing, preaching, and NOOMA video). Rob and Don continue their message of social justice and the Christians part. Good stuff, and a much needed reminder. It's about time someone of faith deals with politics, even taking on the current administration. I am tired of Christians taking one side only. A side that I believe is wrapped in self comfort and attitudes of superiority. I did want to see this book go a bit deeper in content. I felt that they left some illustrations half done and chapters not completed. That's why I gave it an average rating. I didn't get bored with the book, but I was not compelled to read it all in one night like his previous works. I will say that an average rating for Rob would be a 5 star rating for most other authors! Can't wait till your next book comes out.

rob's best book yet

Review Date: 2008-10-08
rob bell's newest book (his third) is his best one yet, i believe. his main premise is that the bible should be read as the story of exile and reconciliation. and he traces this storyline throughout the narrative arc of scripture. peppered with the storytelling that rob is known for (stories from scripture, stories from jewish midrash, and modern day stories), the book wanders through the old testament - starting with "the first book of the bible: exodus" - and into the new, with more and more implications for "our current exile" as the book progresses. it's a deeply theological book, but extremely accessible. it's a "framing" book for followers of jesus, seeking to understand the story of god and how we fit into it. rob doesn't shy away from taking jabs at the "empire" we live in, the spiritualization of violence and oppression, or the mindset of american christianity. i doubt sarah palin would like this book.

personally, i tire quickly of rob's single-sentence paragraphs, found in strings on most pages. it's a neat literary device to use occasionally. but it grows old for me.

but, other than that minor issue (which readers of other rob bell books will certainly recognize - maybe he's attempting to write in twitter boxes of 140 words or less?), this is a profoundly good book that will certainly impact my thinking from here on out.

here are a few choice sentences that captured my imagination:

jesus wants to save us from making the good news about another world and not this one.

jesus wants to save us from preaching a gospel that is only about individuals and not about the systems that enslave them.

jesus wants to save us from shrinking the gospel down to a transaction about the removal of sin and not about every single particle of creation being reconciled to its maker.

jesus want to save us from religiously sanctioned despair, the kind that doesn't believe the world can be made better, the kind that either blatently or subtly teaches people to just be quiet and behave and wait for something to happen "someday."

This is the only book by Rob Bell that I've ever read and I thought it was terrific. This book and "The Shack" by Young and "Reimagining Church" by Viola have been the best three books I've read this year. All of them have changed my thinking about Christianity and church in a big way and for the better.

Liberation Theology puts on funky glasses

Review Date: 2008-10-01
You can give it a an eye-catching green and gray package, yet Bell, and his fellow author Golden, are simply repackaging the America-hating Liberation Theology of another generation. Both see wealth and war through the skinny, yet stylish, glasses of a subjective hermenutic, not grounded in careful Biblical exegesis but rather colored with a Marxist driven isogesis of scripture. Bell and Golden take their preconceived notions and go running for a Hebrew narrative proof text to support them. The key error of their theology is to think that Jesus has already ushered in His future kingdom and we should be beating our swords into plowshares, and getting cozy in our possession free communes. Do the disadvantaged of Bell's community live under his roof with free access to all he possess? Do his children have pet vipers and lions to play with? I think not. The kingdom Jesus was talking about is future tense, and the new Exodus begins with a Second Coming. I shudder to think of the real "violence" the world would witness if Bell and his followers were in charge. Could it be that, David & Solomon's kingdoms, and dare I say the United States, were blessed by God to possess both wealth and power to create a climate most favorable for the advancing of the message of the Gospel? Certainly there will always be abuses, but what we need to do is to use wealth and power wisely, not be ashamed of it.

This is the book for all the bookworms out there--the classic idea of a book popping to life when the right person reads it aloud.

It's an intensely creative story populated by Funke's traditional quirky, flawed characters that give so much heart and strength to an already-awesome, fast-moving plot.

It's a fairy tale world of horror and adventure, good vs. evil and all that lies in between.

Everything about it is great. Now I've read all three books in the series. Everyone of them is great, so if you liked this one get the other! I think everyone will love this book if they like tis type of book.

I loved this book and have been wondering why I haven't heard more people talk about it. She's a great story teller, first and foremost. I found myself gasping when the bad guys dog-ear one of her rare books, laughing out loud, and being delighted and horrified by the characters. I love that the heroes are bibliophiles, and I love the quotations that start each chapter and references within the text from books I loved as a child. I was 30 pages into this book when I ran out to buy the sequel, and I've already pre-ordered the final book of the trilogy... I can't wait.

I wish I could give it a 4 1/2

Meggie and her dad Mo (a traveling book binder) live a semi-nomadic existence moving from town to town all over Europe healing old books in need of new bindings. They love reading, living most of their lives in books, but to Meggie's chagrin Mo never reads to her. Upon the arrival of a vagrant called Dustfinger, Meggie learns why her father never reads aloud. The two are catapulted into a perilous adventure that Mo had tried to protect Meggie from all of her young life in which evil villains from a book are want Mo to work for them. Why? Read the book and find out how they got out of the pages of fiction, where Meggis' missing mother is, and what the power of words can mean in a world that often seems empty and boring.

This is one of the most fun and imaginative books I've come across in a long time. The characters are well drawn, the action is compelling, and it is just fun to turn the pages to see what is on the other side of each piece of paper. For lovers of books and those who are just getting into reading this is a great piece of fiction. Parents it is a bit intense for very young readers, but for adoloscents to people in their Golden Years I highly recommend this memorable book.

Randy Alcorn did a superb job of painting a potentially realistic picture of Heaven. He used numerous Scriptural references as well as his imagination, to come up with his descriptions of what may very well be what Heaven will be like for believers. I recommend it highly as a book that can encourage us in our daily lives and comfort us as we face the death of loved ones and our own immortality.

So Good... It Hurts

Review Date: 2008-09-22
Heaven... how missunderstood is it? To put it simply, I will discribe some incorrect veiws of heaven.

Many people believe that heaven is an unfamiliar place where we immediatly adjust to a new lifstyle; playing harps and polishing golden streets. These people believe we will not have fun or be creative. They believe we'll be slaving to do God's will and loose all desire to think independantly. And worst of all, these people believe we will have no memories, and everything (from entertainment to friends) will no longer be the same.

That view of heaven makes me want to blip out of existance, rather than go there. I'm a God fearing Christian. I never seriously considered heaven, even though I've thought long and hard about death. Although I'll die one day, I never considered what I will have to look forwards to. Randy Alcorn has saved me from despare.

Randy Alcorn discribes heaven with amazing detail. He discribes it as a place full of adventure, oppertunity, fun and friendships. The number one thing Christians desire is to see God in heaven. Randy agrees... but that's only the begining.

He says heaven will be a familiar place, and we will remember all our happy experiences from the old Earth. Not only that; but we will continue doing whatever work we love. We will be happy and satisfied 24/7. But we will also have willpower to make decisions as we go on living for all eternity. We will also be allowed to keep our old friends and make thousands of new ones.

Using a combination of scripture and logic, Randy Alcorn beautifully constructed this book. Even if you question his ideas, he said he welcomes your debate so he can correct his mistakes. There's lots of references and quotes from many intelligent people.

Even though the book is very thick, the writing style is simple. It's an easy book to pick up and read from begining to end. The grammer is not complicated and the vocabulary is simple. Also, Randy Alcorn uses a lot of example stories to help you picture what the answers to your questions are. Even if you don't want to read the book cover to cover, you can skip parts your not curious to read and get to something interesting.

The book discribes heaven as a nice place. So good, it almost gives me a headache to picture it. But now that my picture of heaven is clear, death doesn't sound so disappointing. Even so, Randy Alcorn gives us a lot of reasons to enjoy life before we die. It's a very opptomistic book, and a classic everyone should read.

This book is so awesome! I've never read a book that opened up the Bible to me like this one has. This book isn't based on theory - it's based on Scripture. Passages in the Bible on Heaven never really sank in for me until this book came along. Now I get the picture so much clearer about what Heaven is really like! This book is a must read for every Christian and will open you up to a whole new world, literally! This book is a MUST HAVE! It's also a good witnessing tool for those who don't know about Heaven and where they will end up when they leave this world. Makes a great gift!

This sets contains 5 CDs, and goes over about 230 words. Good number of the words on these recordings seem to be on a high-school level.

The first CD covers the vocabulary related to: The Raw and The Cooked; Stop and Go; Crime and Punishment.

The second CD coverts the vocabulary related to: At Home and Abroad; Hide and Seek; War and Peace.

The third CD covers the vocabulary related to: The Fiendish and The Friendly; Body and Soul; Chaos and Control.

The fourth CD covers the vocabulary related to: Old News; Rich Man, Poor Man; The Rise and Fall.

The fifth CD covers the vocabulary related to: Church and State; Franks and Beans.

The recordings are very entertaining to listen to. After defining the words, they are dramatized, often in a humorous way, adding fun to the learning process.

I bought volume 1 & 2 together. Here's my review of volume 1 which also applies to volume 2:

I bought this product with hopes of a more enjoyable way to expand my vocabulary. I tried to like this product (especially since it's a good chunk of money) and I gave it a fair amount of my time. In the end, I found it to be ineffective for these reasons:
- The script is boring. It tries to be witty, but really comes of as cheesy/corny
- I found myself constantly rewinding. The material just doesn't sink in. The stories and dialogue aren't memorable. Perhaps this is so because of the pace. I'd rather have fewer words and actually learn those words, than sweep through many words and have to backtrack. I'd say on average the amount of time spent listening to the material was TRIPLED because of rewinding.
- The voices are a bit stuffy and robotic to me

In the end I stopped listening to Word Smart. It was just too laborious.

I bought this CD thinking that it would be a productive way to spend my commutes in the morning. It was however only mildly more productive than listening to idiot DJs on the radio. I think that I knew 80% of the words by 15 years of age. The only benefit gained was hearing them pronouced but being British I had grave suspicions concerning the US pronounciations! The two presenters are funny and quite listenable. I would recommend these CDs to high school students who do not read books but still hope to master thre English language well enough to pass exams.

yes, the book was great, very intense in part. But the last few chapters were so scattered I felt like i had to go back to see what I had somehow missed. And the whole car murders inbetween seemed lifeless. I never truly understood what that was all about. If someone figured out how the night watcher and the doctor were involved I would be happy to have them explain it to me. Otherwise it seems like night watcher followed him around killing people and then he took all the credit for the murders in a round about way to win the court case. weird.

I really found myself involved the moment I started reading it and then when I hit the middle it was like coasting downhill the rest of the way. The book was a quick read for me and I'm happy to say that again Mr. Patterson you didn't disappoint. The plot was great, the climatic ending was just in Patterson's style. I only had one question though when I was through with the book, what's going to happen with Lindsay and Joe??? Maybe I'll find out when I hop into the 6th book. I loved the edition of Yuki to the group. This is turning out to be a superb series!

The 5th Horseman
by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
Review by AMenace2Poetry

In The 5th Horseman by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro, you are taken on an unbelievable ride where you aren't helping solve one mystery; rather, two: Murders are occurring inside the San Francisco Municipal Hospital where victims are found with coins over their eyes, and there are glamorized and accessorized female bodies showing up in cars with the same perfume dabbed upon their genitalia. Join Detective Lindsay Boxer and her friends as they race against time to solve these mysteries and end these murders!

Okay, I could've told more about what happened in the book, but if I did that, it wouldn't give you any motivation to read it. I do believe, however, that if I speak of what I found captivating in the novel, you may be more prone to. So, these are my thoughts and opinions (read: emphasis on MY) about The 5th Horseman by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro.

First, I'll start with what I like to call "the positives." The book is broken up into several chapters; however, each chapter is only a page or three long, so it gives one the impression that he/she is covering more of the novel at a faster pace. The characters are great together, as if they're the best of friends. Even Det. Boxer's relationship with her boyfriend, Joe, feels "right." My favorite character was Yuki Castellano, a young lawyer whose mother has been rushed to San Francisco Municipal Hospital. She's full of emotion, and I could actually see her feelings... if that makes any sense at all.

Now, on to "the negatives." Although the book is broken up into one-three page chapters and readers are left feeling as if they have become speedsters, the book, I feel, moves too quickly. There isn't enough pausing in the book. Well, what does that mean? I don't feel that the characters are fleshed out enough, and the situations could use more time spent on them. While the characters are "good together" (for lack of a better phrase), I don't feel as if Patterson or Paetro spent enough time working out the kinks. My least favorite character was Cindy Thomas. Why? She was... again, for lack of a better phrase, annoying. While she did play the role of reporter to a T, I think there were some things she should've kept to herself as opposed to writing about it. But that's just me. You may find her to be an amazing character.

I'll stop there. I try not to overanalyze anyone's work, and I do believe that Patterson (especially) and Paetro (not especially -- never heard of her) are great authors. So, I've missed a few books within this Women's Murder Club series, but The 5th Horseman makes me feel as if I'm kept in the loop. Overall, on a scale from 1 to 5, I would rate this as a 2 1/2 or maybe lowish 3.

Great book. This was a "page turner". You could NOT put this book down. I enjoyed the whole series of the Woman's Murder Club. Am waiting for the next book from James Patterson. Thanks, Mr. Patterson for such great entertainment.

My experience with Amazon has been great. Thank you.

A summary of simple and easy steps to boost your productivity in a slim, easily read book that's suitable for even the most time pressured of people. With plenty of tips and ideas that you can dip in and out of when you need it, to help deal with the habit of putting things off. It's on my recommended reading list for clients and is a great addition to any busy person's bookshelf.

You can't even make the excuse that you don't have time to read it, each chapter is only a few pages long with a handy summary/action section after each one.

I wanted very much to like this book.
Normally I will read an excellent book cover to cover only taking time off to eat, sleep, and go to work.
A good book I will typically read a chapter a day, every day.
Although this book has some decent advice, it is a very dry read.
I have had for over a month now and am only a third through it.

I purchased the audio version of this book and listen to it over and over. Brian has a very positive and soothing voice and gets right to the point. No fluff. If you want fluff and lots of complicated language, check out Getting Things Done by David Allen. I started in on Allen's book and put it down after a few pages because Eat That Frog is so much simpler and concise. I like to play Eat that Frog and The Ultimate Goals Program over and over again in my car.

I couldn't think of a more apt title for this book. We all know that procrastination is what holds us back from being successful. Sadly it's often the hardest most disagreeable tasks that get the best results. This book is not reinventing the wheel but a quick read that teaches you simple principles that make all the difference. The main idea being if you tackle your worst job first the rest of the day should be relatively painless.

Sure the print is large and the book is thin but how much do you need to read to realize you've got to get out there and do your work? It's common sense.

I liked the book it was just what I needed when my motivation was flagging. I figure the cost is worth what you get back and it wouldn't hurt anyone to read it once a year to stay on track. I actually also have the audio book and it fills a long drive nicely.

It really did make me feel better to know that I can stop it and showed me HOW. Gave me peace of mind. I recommend the AUDIO.

This CD set received great reviews, which led me to purchase it----but I discovered it mainly contains peoples' "stories" and basic information. I have been there and done that; I'm not a panic disorder "newbie", I know I'm not alone, I know the symptoms, etc. If you want more involved information regarding actual TREATMENTS, they advise you to purchase the book. The problem is, some people are wired to learn by LISTENING rather than having to sit down with a book and I feel short-changed.

Not always we have the time to sit down and start working on a new project. Not always we can concentrate good enough to have food for thought right out of the box. This CD of the well known Dr. David Burns does a good job to introduce to some ideas how to deal with cognitive therapy and to the point, to help you get the way of thinking in many situations where our mind thinks wrong and have missleading atitudes.

Well read, good enough examples/stories of how CBT and way of thinking, and some rules of this kind of (well thought out) therapy works.

I dont think that from this CD package (of 3) you can know every situation how to deal with, but enough good to get you gasoline until getting to the gas station.

By listening to it a few times in my driving time I picked up alot of clues.. and from there I picked up a book on CBT ..only after I listened to the CDs of this package I was able to read the book more fluently knowing many of the concepts. This CD tells you interesting enough situatons in the form of (real?) stories to get your attention into the learning curve easily.

David Burns, psychiatrist and author of best selling book "Feeling Good," once again writes a book that is easy to understand, and fascinating to read. This can help you with anxiety. The CD is a summary of the book. Burns addresses many causes of anxiety, and shows ways of reducing them, using Cognitive Therapy. If you don't like to read, but have anxiety, try the CD, and you might even decide to read the book.

Guiding you through life without anxiety.

How Much More Can Patterson and Cross Take?

Alex Cross has faced some of the most heinous murderers imaginable and this time around he must face two. A new monster has taken center stage as he has made killing a spectacle by murdering his victims in crowded, public places. As if the Audience Killer wasn't enough of a nightmare, it seems the deadly Mastermind (Kyle Craig) himself has escaped from prison and is on the hunt again. Alex Cross has hands full this time and it will take every ounce of skill and luck he can muster to stop these deadly killers.

Double Cross is certainly not the best Alex Cross novel James Patterson has written, but there is still plenty here to satisfy his rabid fans. Alex Cross himself is Patterson's most intriguing and beloved character and once again you can't help but find yourself immersed in his passion for justice. The tension Cross feels between family and duty always adds a dose of relevancy to the story drawing us even further in. The villains here are as nasty as ever, and the Audience Killer murder scenes are especially frightening and disturbing. Kyle Craig's return at first felt like a bit of a stretch to me, but I was surprised at how much I bought into this plot element as the story progressed.

As this series continues on I can't help but wonder how much more both Alex Cross and James Patterson can take. Admittedly, Patterson always finds a way to bring me back and I'm eager once again for the next installment. Let's just hope Patterson can continue to find ways to breathe new life into this fan favorite character.

Severe lack of plot and twists to keep you going...

Let me first say that I am usually a big James Patterson fan. Judge & Jury, Lifeguard, and The Quickie were much, much better than this, simply because of the plot developments and unexpected twists. This novel can essentially be summed up by the following outline.

Murder
Detectives are clueless
Murder
Detectives continue to be clueless
Murder
Detectives still have absolutely no leads and keep talking about how they have no leads
Murder
Detectives get an obscure lead that turns out to essentially be crap
Detectives are captured themselves
Detectives escape, capture one bad guy, allow the other bad guy to escape.

THE END

What turned me off about this book that usually keeps me going in the other novels is the lack of plot and suspense. The fact that the detectives have no leads or clues at all for about 90% of the book just leaves me bored! For something like that, Judge & Jury is definitely the way to go, a 5-Star!

Thanks for reading my review!

Why does this guy sell so many books??? Written at a third grade reading level, huge holes in the plot and absolutely moronic, unbelievable story lines ( a master criminal escapes from a max security prison by changing clothes with his lawyer and wearing a rubber mask, not to mention the lawyer's long ponytail that somehow is not a problem for the disguise that fools all the guards) Please, read a good writer like Lee Child,Michal Connelly, James Lee Burke .............

Alex Cross has been trying to live a more stable life for his children, and for his mental health. However, when a twisted killer - the Audience Killer - who lives for the attention granted by his killings starts to stalk the city, Alex is drawn back in. This killer stages his killings as a macabre form of public amusement both at the scene and on a website and taunts the police with his success.

In Colorado, Kyle Craig has plotted for years in order to set up a complex escape plan. Craig wants one thing - to get back at Alex Cross, the man who put him away. And if he needs to join forces with the Audience Killer to do this, that's just fine with him.

Can Alex solve the crimes in time to save himself, and his family? A thriller that will keep you turning the pages. Don't miss it!
