There is a pretty limited selection when it comes to birding sound cds. This is a good choice because each bird is given about 30 seconds of calls. I placed the entire cd into my iTunes library, then downloaded them into my iPod for field use. Really, calls and songs are the only sure way to identify birds when the bird could be one of several that look alike. (as most do).

The only critique I have is that some of the western birds are not in this guide. They are in the eastern guide. You actually need them both. I highly recommend this set of guides.

Another Home Run for Jack Kornfield

As anyone who has heard Jack Kornfield speak or has read his previous books (e.g., A Path With Heart) knows, Jack is a wonderful storyteller who uses his beautifully touching stories to teach us the most profound truths about life. Any reader of The Wise Heart: A Guide to the Universal Teachings of Buddhist Psychology will not be disappointed.
Fifteen years after having written A Path With Heart, Jack's story telling abilities have not diminished--and he has new stories to tell. In addition, he clearly enunciates 26 principles of Buddhist psychology; moreover, as other outstanding teachers of psychotherapy have noted (including not only therapists with a solution-oriented bent, but also such psychoanalysts as Allen Wheelis and Herbert J. Schlesinger--e.g., see Endings and Beginnings: On Terminating Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis), he reminds us that psychotherapy is not just about understanding but is also about action. In contrast with much of Western psychology, however, which has primarily focused on the contents of consciousness, "on what we think about," he points out that Buddhist psychology focuses on how we think, on our mental states themselves. In line with that orientation, at the end of each chapter, he offers a specific practice to help us shift from unhealthy states of mind to healthy ones, thus making it possible to turn theory into a living reality.
The Wise Heart is an outstanding book, worthy of being not only read but also chewed and digested.

This is an exceptionally intelligent, well-written and useful book. Based on Buddhist principals, it lays out a way of looking at the world and wisely becoming an integrated, constructive, comfortable member of it. It is generous and compassionate and anecdotal enough to show how its applications can enhance one's life. It's contrast of Buddhist psychology and Western psychology is extremely interesting and explains how the Eastern view gives more room for one to use already present internal mechanisms for healing. I recommend it highly.

I have not read a Wonderful work on Buddha Dharma of this quality in a long, long time. I have shared this observation / recommendation with my meditation colleagues and dharma friends. A wonderful teaching to reflect on our current practice, a comprehensive insight into the Dharma from a truly wholistic perspective, a treat of series of short anecdotes to punctuates important lessons from friends, teachers, other practitioners...
A wonderful dharma gift to the world.

I purchased The Wise Heart in June of 2008. I read many of this type of book but this wise heart has caught me like no other. It is an easy read but I have not yet finished it and this is August. I have found that I must pause and think after each chapter. I often can't make it through the entire chapter before I am in the midst of a new realization. His writing is clear, simple in presentation, diverse in his resources, and profound in content.
If I do not reach enlightenment after reading this wonderful book I am sure I will after I read it a second time.

If you have some knowledge of Buddhism and want to deepen it this is a great book. It took me a long time to read because there are so many places I wanted to stop and think about the meaning of what he said. What I really loved was the stories about people he worked with and how they had to deal with the everyday problems in their lives. It will make me a better person if I can just adopt a small percentage of his wisdom

What I like about this new offering from Marcus Buckingham is that it pushes the reader to action...and not just a lofty list of "to do's" but action steps that are quickly apprehended and quickly produce results.
Benjamin Franklin said the definition of insanity "is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." I find that to be more the definition of humanity-we strive to change but somehow find ourselves repeatedly in similar conundrums. (To note, I think the definition of insanity is attaching a key to a kite and flying it during a lightning storm!)
The whole strengths series (this is the third book) by Buckingham gives great instruction on leveraging strengths...and when we (enevitably) get in the same situations we CAN expect different results.
This would be a great series for the human resources managers and bosses of the world. Don't we all wish our boss would focus on our strengths!

This is an excellent book by Marcus Buckingham! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and the case study he uses throughout the book really reinforces all of the key concepts. The journal pages in the back of the book (or you can download them off his site) are helpful in assisting you to identify which work activities strengthen you and which work activities weaken you. He shows, through case examples, how to minimize the activities that weaken you so that you spend most of your time on work where your strengths shine.

Marcus Buckingham is brilliant! His research-profound! As a professional workplace trainer, I use this book and insist that my clients purchase copies for their management teams before I conduct their trainings. Yesterday's "Human Resources" is today's "Talent Management" and employment engagement! Another must-have is the previous book "Now, Discover Your Strengths" by Marcus Buckingham.

I appreciate Dr. Dobson's insight into children. This book has absolutely helped me not to be a "screamer" anymore and to be a more confident parent to my two-year-old. He is not as strong willed as some of the examples in the book, but my husband and I can definitely already see a positive difference in his behavior. Even if your children aren't all that strong willed, I'm sure they enjoy testing the boundaries. Please, please read this book.

This book by Dr. Dobson is another great read from a godly expert. I appreciated his no-nonsense approach to correction and his specific instructions for dealing with childhood behaviors. My almost-2 year old son has been throwing tantrums and displaying typical "terrible 2's" behavior. Dr. Dobson showed me how to deal with it in firmness and in love. Dr. Dobson always directs the reader back to God's love for us, and the connection between a parent's love for his child and God's love for us. An excellent read!

I have a 3 year old that I have had trouble dealing with from the time she was born. She held her breath out of anger when the nurse gave her a bath and put that tiny shirt on her just one hour after birth. She cried for the first 4 months from a combination of colic and wanting to be able to do whatever she wanted to do, like walk. I thought after she learned to roll, then, sit, then crawl, then walk, etc that she would be less cranky; well that didn't happen. She continues to be fussy, demanding, and insists on getting her own way. She wants to control the people in her world. Discipline and punishment have been difficult and have yielded little results; at home and at preschool. I have suspected for some time that she is strong willed and her teacher this week, after a full week of time outs from not listening, stated she did not know what to do with my daughter. I have read Dr. Dobson's book. It has great insight into how these children think. I don't fully understand how they think because I do not think that way. Dr Dobson opened my eyes on some issues and brought to my attention the fact that my daughter seriously needs direction, before her teen years. I liked the book, but wish he had been more specific and listed more detailed ideas/tools to use when punishing/disciplining besides spanking. I am not opposed to spanking but I find most discipline, including spanking, timeouts, taking privileges away, and offering rewards, do not work for my daughter. My daughter wants to do what she wants to do and that is the bottom line for her. This book has opened the door for me into her world and I have since been researching the subject online and have ordered 2 more books to help teach me how to deal with her. All the opponents to spanking, that I have read, use inflammatory words to get their point across. I was spanked as a child. I very vaguely remember maybe one of them. What I found harmful and hurtful to me was the yelling, screaming, being put down, controlled, belittled, and being worried when I would have to endure any of those things again; not being spanked. I can understand their passion, but controlled spanking needs to be put into perspective. All children need to be punished differently according to their temperament.

First, before purchasing the book, don't be surprised when Dr. Dobson throws in his faith/religious beliefs into his parenting style. That is part of being a Christian. Allowing God to direct your actions in every aspect of life. I've read several 1-2 star reviews that don't like that....well, you should have researched the author a little more before purchasing....or read a few more reviews.
Second, MANY of the 1-2 star reviewers forgot the title of the book....The Strong-Willed Child. It seems that they think Dr. D's approaches are to be used with EVERY child. NOT SO!!! When you read the book, keep reminding yourself of the title of the book and what kind of a child his strategies are meant for. You obviously wouldn't use these strategies with your average or compliant child. In all sincerety, I believe that Dr. D's wisdom in the book is flying right over the heads of numerous 1-2 star reviewers who forgot the title of the book while reading or who aren't thinking deeply enough about the things he's trying to teach.
Here's my final note and my disclaimer.....After saying all of the above....no one approach or style works with every strong-willed child; I'm a 6th grade special education teacher....I've got several years of proof. There are however several ingredients that help strong-willed children through to success; many of which do not involve the child directly. I was one of them myself and I had several teachers tell my mother I'd end up in prison; so you can imagine how I must have behaved....well, look how the Lord used my difficulties to strengthen my heart for my profession and Him. There IS hope in Him! Happy reading.

I was given this book by a helpful relative. Please read with a grain of salt - some of the ideas, like hitting a child with a small belt or paddle if they do not stay in bed, and then telling them you love them, are really off the wall. Bedtime is one of the most precious times in the world, and the idea that you would hit a child with anything as you send them off the sleep has to be wrong. We have had to deal with this on occassion and find the "Nanny way" works best, little talk, be firm and put them back in bed.
would not recommend this book to anyone.

The story has been told by other reviewers, unfortunately one gave away the ending. The reviews are accurate. The story flows and kept me turning the pages. If one takes the time it really does not make any sense but it is summer and who cares. The characters are all predictable but that is what is expected. It is hard to rate this book but I gave it 4 stars because it delivers what is promised.
The major question I have is why the prologue is there. It gives away a lot of the story early on and it did not add to my enjoyment.

An associate lawyer doing pro bono work and an ex-cop turned part-time PI both come to the conclusion that the President may be a serial muderer.
Mr. Margolin weaves a pageturning tale bringing the disparate storylines into one great read.
With the sexual-political shenanigans of recent years adds a hint of possibility to this story.
I could not put down this book and read it in one sitting. This is the first book by this author that I have read. Definitely will check out his previous works and am looking forward to the next book.

Private Investigator Dana Cutler is given an assignment by an unknown client to follow a pretty college student, Charlotte Walsh and to report on her whereabouts at all times. Dana follows the girl to a secret assignation with the President of the USA where she takes some night photos which clearly show both the girl and the President. The next morning, Walsh's body shows up and Dana goes into hiding to avoid reprisals from the President's Secret Service. Meanwhile, young attorney Brad Miller is given the job of trying to prove the innocence of a jailed serial killer, Clarence Little, who protests that although he is willing to confess to other killings, he didn't commit this one. He is a truly evil man who mutilated the bodies of his female victims and kept their little fingers as a souvenir. It's a very good read with lots of twists and turns and enough suspense to keep the reader up long after bed time.

Phillip Margolin is one of my favorite crime novelists, partly due to the fact he lives in my hometown of Portland, Oregon and usually places his stories there. I had the pleasure of finally getting to the top of the list at the library for his latest book Executive Privilege. I personally feel this is one of his best novels. It grabbed my attention and didn't let go until the final page.
The story starts out with private investigator Dana Cutler taking what appears to be a simple job from a high-powered attorney. All she has to do is follow around a young college student and report on her whereabouts. But the assignment, though odd, takes on a whole new level of danger when it leads Cutler to the doorsteps of the President in a wooded cabin, apparently the participant in a tryst with her target subject. That's not the kind of information that keeps you healthy and alive for very long, and she has a past that brings back dark and unpleasant memories of trying to survive. Meanwhile, Brad Miller, a young attorney just starting out at the bottom rung of a large legal firm, is asked to take a pro bono case for a death row appeal. It's assumed that he'll go through the formalities and the appeal will be denied, but Miller turns up some evidence that would clear the convict of that particular murder (even though there are still others that the killer did confess to). The head of the legal firm is not very happy with this turn of events, and tells Miller in no uncertain terms that he is to back off. When Cutler tracks down Miller and starts comparing notes about their particular cases, the paths converge and appear to lead to murder committed and sanctioned by the highest office of government.
Everything in this novel just worked for me... the characters, plot, pacing. I started reading one evening and had a horrible time trying to find a lull in the action to set it aside. Needless to say, it was finished before I turned out the light the next evening. With all the conspiracy theories and muckrakers these days, this seemed to be a plot that wouldn't have been horribly out of place on some websites and alternative media sources. Bottom line is that it was an enjoyable read, and I'm looking forward to his next novel.

Excellent journalism. Joel is qualified to share his knowledge and opinions about the future in the middle east. Every American that is interested in the future of this country needs to digest this book from cover to cover.

Another Joel Rosenberg page-turner. If you don't read another book this year, this is an absolute must read. A well-documented non-fiction thriller will reveal what's really happening in the Middle East, politics and the world and why these things are taking place as they are and what to watch for. This may influence your choice for the next President of the U.S. as it well should. There's a sense of urgency in sharing this book with family and friends because it's about our future as well as that of our children's if they are to have one.

This book is so very current with what is going on in the middle east. It is truly amazing how accurate Joel C. Rosenberg is with the events taking place in Iran and Russia. It is a must read for people interested in what is taking place in Israel.

I appreciate Joel's approach, using the third lens of Scripture to interpret current world events. Great book for anyone interested in keeping a watchful eye out for fulfillments of Biblical prophecies. I can't wait to read Epicenter 2.0!

This book is insane!
If you are a believer in Biblical Prophecy to the point of being blind about anything logical, this book is for you!
There is little to this book accept the belief that everything in the Bible will come to pass and that the one true God, Jesus Christ, will rule the world above all other beliefs of other Gods.
Maybe I'm just stupid, but I feel this is the same sort of propaganda that all religions preach.....that their God is the only true God. In this case, Jesus Christ.
It's sad that the author doesn't skip a beat feeling sorry for the thousands of lives that will be sacrificed in a third world war, if we are so unfortunate to have one. On the contrary, he seems to be anxious for it to begin, as it will result in the second coming of Jesus Christ! It's like, "Oh well, people will die but it's OK because we will have Christ here to make everything right!"
I respect the fact that people have a right to believe what they want, but really....isn't this a little bit over the edge? It does seem that some religious people out there, calling themselves Christians, are just as nutty as the Terrorist that recruit their people to become suicide bombers, in the name of their God.
As for my belief, I think that the mad men of this century are all too willing to bomb each other until only the cock roaches will be left to decide if it was all worth it, and if they will see Jesus Christ, Allah or some other God return to earth.
The author is a fanatic and a nut....trust me on this one.

I must say - I believed this stuff would work for me. And it's true that his cds put me out - for like 20 minutes. The problem is that it didn't relax me enough before inducing me to sleep. I'm not a fan anymore. I've owned like four or five different cds but I always ended up getting rid of them. I thought it was just me and even ordered the SAME ones again to give it another try. Too techno and in your face for me. I'd appreciate a gentler approach like one I found online for free....

I've enjoyed listening to this CD. It is more effective if you use headphones. Most of the time, I'm asleep before I'm to the middle of the CD. I'm not completely sure if the lucid dream part works with my brain, however, I have noticed a change in my dreams. I am now experiencing more clarity to my dreams and feeling emotion when dreaming about current dilemmas and how I need to resolve them.

I have another CD by Glenn Harrold and I was disappointed in this one because it was too much like the first one I purchased. I was expecting some different imagery and basically got the same imagery that was in the first cd.
However, I do find his voice soothing. I love the accent and it is a calming cd.

I have never tried a sleep CD or anything like it before, but I've had trouble falling asleep my entire life so thought it was worth a try. I read a bunch of reviews of people who said this really worked for them. I tried this several nights in a row and never did I fall asleep during the audio. However, the breathing exercises and suggestions were good for helping me get relaxed. Each time I was able to fall asleep on my own without too much effort after the recording was over.

This was purchased as a gift. The baby's older brother is enrolled in a Spanish speaking school, even though the parents are of Italian and Jewish heritage. I don't know if they have used the CD, but I suspect they will, and it should be fun for the baby's big brother to provide the opportunity to speak in Spanish as well.

The songs are fun, but the book isn't very helpful. The CD is for several different ages but it isn't divided up in any way. There is a lot of skipping and restarting. I have resorted to just letting the CD play all the way through even though my daughter is only 9 months. She likes the upbeat music!

I speak Spanish fluently, but not being raised speaking Spanish, I did not know any songs to share with my son when he was born. I found this CD, and it has been fantastic! We speak Spanish about 20% of the time at home, but in spite of hearing more English, this is the first CD my son had any interest in at all. He loves De Colores, and the song about the Elefantes especially well.
I am uncertain what another reviewer meant about the CD and the booklet being out of sync, unless that was true in an older version. In ours, the tracks on the CD and in the booklet are both arranged according to age/developmental level. The booklet is extremely helpful because it includes the full lyrics to all the songs, so if there are some parts of the song you don't understand (or if you don't speak Spanish but are prepared to imitate the songs), the lyrics are right there for you to study.
I have about 15 CDs and/or DVDs of songs/rhymes in Spanish, and this is hands down my favorite!

All of the Baby's First Words CDs by Living Language (formerly under the title of Baby's First Steps) are wonderful. Adult native speakers sing songs that are part of the culture from which each language derives and native children say rhymes that are familiar to native children of each language. If you are interested in more than one language, you can buy each different language CD without having any same songs or rhymes repeated because each is unique to the language. We have the Spanish, French, and Italian Cds and love all of them. Each one has 50 tracks that include songs, rhymes, and sayings that are appropriate for any child learning another language. The Spanish one has familiar Spanish songs such as De Colores and Las Mananitas. The French one has songs such as Frere Jacques and A la claire au fontaine. As stated before, only native speakers are on these CDs so the accents are authentic. However, on this Spanish CD, there is no person from Spain that I can hear (I speak Spanish). These are definitely Latin American accents, none from Spain, but the pronunciations are very precise and clear. Everything is annunciated well and the rhymes are spoken more slowly in order for babies and children to learn them well.

On the surface Harry Miller is an ordinary person; an MP who is in realty the counterpart to Blake Johnson, the American President's top security man. Blake runs the black ops group the Basement, a unit that works outside the law to administer justice and protect the country and its people. Blake and Harry met in Banu, Kosovo; each was there to inspect the country's leaders and to prevent a Russian Officer Igor Zorin from torching a mosque that would have reignited the fighting.
President Putin and his right hand man Ivan Volkov decide Miller should be taken out and assign the mysterious the Broker, who has never been seen, to contact Michael Quinn, a former IPPI agent. Quinn contacts one of his agents to take out the MP. Miller knows he is under surveillance and being stalked, but takes out the contact killer. He also insures that a plutonium shipment by boat is carefully monitored and tracked all the way. Putin knows that Miller with Major Ferguson's people were responsible (the British version of the Basement) and wants him dead. The plan works only the wrong person dies; Miller with Ferguson's help will not rest until all those involved in the assassination plot are dead.
Suspense grandmaster Jack Higgins writes another fascinating tense thriller that is loaded with action. Yet with all the non--stop action, the story line also contains the political realties of the world today with insight into Muslim fundamentalists, Russia's efforts to return to superpower status, the NATO response, and the fragile peace in several places like Northern Ireland. However, as always is the case in a Mr. Higgins' thriller, his key characters seem real even when they perform seemingly surreal stunts; and yes cold blooded killer Sean Dillon is in the middle of the maelstrom.

To be cliche this book is thought provoking. I'll admit zombies are a far cry from reality, but then again you never know. But the subject matter does bring into sharp clarity the fact that we as a civilization are too complacent, slow to act and to reliant on the poor information and sensationalist reporting of the local and national media. But these are just a few of the examples that will make you think about what is not quite right with out society and world after reading this book.
The subject matter is as I said far fetched but extremely well thought out and Max Brooks really must had did his research on the subjects that he deals with in each little "interview." The format of the book is fantastic and it's a great zombie universe he's created. I'd love to see more stories come out of this universe.
I whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone that is a zombie fanatic or anyone looking for a different and thought provoking read. I won't be putting a zombie survival pack in my trunk anytime soon, but I will start to be more prepared for the other more realistic disasters that may come our way.

This follow-up to the Zombie Survival Guide is less campy but some of the survivor interviews contain just enough snark to make you shake your head in amusement. One aspect that is fun is the interviewer narrating his own actions, typically in response to questions from the interviewee.
You get so many different types of people answering questions about their time during the war that you will no doubt have some you hate and some you love. There is a smattering of all types of people being interviewed and if you cross one that doesn't float your boat then you know it'll be over in a couple of pages. This isn't the type of book that has you getting attached to any characters, it is more like a voyeuristic pleasure of other people's misfortune.

Max Brooks, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War (Crown, 2006)
If Studs Terkel were not still alive, I have little doubt that buy now, we'd have already had the companion volume to this book, telling the story of the zombie war from the other side. But Studs still clings to life (he's ninety-six as I write this, and for all I know he's still writing), and so we have only one side of the great Zombie War depicted here. Still, for those of us who lived through it, perhaps that's enough.
What, you don't remember the zombie war? Well, I'm not entirely surprised. Fewer and fewer people do. It's amazing how short our collective memory is. That's part of the reason Max Brooks wrote this book-- so that people wouldn't forget, that they'd have something to hold on to, some artifact they can consult. It's the same reason Terkel wrote his oral history of World War II; we all learn the dates and places in history class, but who ever dredges it up again, unless they go on to become history professors and propagate the same information? Terkel's book tells us what the battlegrounds were like from the perspectives of those, most of whom are now gone, who were actually there. So does Brooks'. No one who reads this will ever hear "Yonkers" and just think of a date and an event. You get an actual veteran telling the story and you can hear the explosions. You can taste the dirt. You can hear the moaning of the enemy. And Brooks captures it, as he captures the many other voices in this tome, by standing back and letting these folks tell it like they saw it.
This is an impressive compendium of voices, now that I'm n the subject. Men and women from around the globe, from the northern wastes of Canada to the South Pole (with the obvious exception of Iceland), offer their stories here. Some of them are still understandably bitter. Some are just angry. Some resilient, some defeated, some poignant. All of them together, give the clearest picture of a global conflict I've ever run across. Max Brooks is, truly, to be commended for his investigative work on this project, and his desire not to let the Zombie War fade until it becomes nothing more than a bad nightmare. For, as we all know, those who do not repeat history are doomed to learn from it. ****

A good effort I must say it in short describes zombie warfare first the outbrack then the panic that follows and finally the determination with which the remaining uninfected population fight back against the invader. There is also almost none of this "superman syndrome" stuff that permeates everything Science Fiction related these days. Over the course of the narrative it is clear that if humanity is going to survive it is going to have to fight as a team.
If I had to pick my two favorite installments it's the exploits of one professional bodyguard on a "Long Island" near New York basically a morality tale about how celebrity is irrelevant in the new world and the story of how Cuba of all places becomes the "arsenal of victory". If some point of views like the former computer nerd and Hiroshima survivor that become the guardians of Japan seem far fetched...well it is a book about zombies and if I were writing a book about the subject I'd have some fun with it too.
It is an excellent book providing a balanced account of the war from all fronts from land based armies to people who spent the entire war on the Open Ocean and even outer space. I would even go so far as to say that it was too short I wanted more.
If I have one compliant however is that whereas most books that run along this kind of theme are usually hampered by a single viewpoint this one while it is good is too cosmopolitan. It seemed that I was just getting to like one character then that point of view would end and we would be on to someone else a different theater of the war. This is not a bad things its just sometimes it can be abrupt.
Overall-Wonderful book I look forward to further installments if there are any.
