Inner Talk for Peace of Mind Review Date: 2008-10-07
This tape is fabulous. I listen to it when I go to sleep. It is narrated, as always, by Dr. Jeffers. The background music, too, is soothing to the ear and body which enhances the "session" with Dr. Jeffers. Her manner and voice are soothing to mind and spirit. I recommend it highly for a pleasant, simple and surefire way toward "inner peace."

This is a totally outstanding set of Peter Pan adventuresReview Date: 2008-08-11
"In battle, the warriors sometimes hurled venomous snakes and spiders at the enemy; they also coated the tips of their arrows with a special mixture of toxins that caused horrific, paralyzing pain. It was this practice that gave the tribe its name, the most feared name in this part of the ocean: Scorpions. It was a name that meant misery and death."
Far away in London, Peter's old friend Molly Aster is planning a kind of invasion herself after discovering that her father, Lord Leonard Aster, will be going to Paris to investigate problems related to the "Starstuff fall." She is determined to go, though is definitely not invited on this journey. Molly and her friend George do serious research and discover some strange things about her father and a man known as Mr. Pan (is this Peter's father?). Finally, they manage to sneak aboard her father's ship, where they encounter and become prisoners of the evil Lord Ombra and Zarboff, King of Rundoon. The only thing worse than being in prison would be to fall victim to Zarboff's giant pet snake, Kundalini.
"He reached down and touched the dark shape next to his throne. The shape moved, and slowly a triangular head rose, the torchlight reflecting from two yellow eyes. Peter had seen snakes before; there were many on Mollusk Island. But he had never seen one half as massive as this."
For the boy who will never grow old, Peter's friendship with Molly is both sweet and poignant. They have shared so much together and will share more; still, they have the knowledge that they cannot grow up together.
"And then Molly kissed him on the lips. It was the first time either of them had ever kissed anybody on the lips, and it was a kiss they would both carry in their minds for the rest of their lives."
In this action-packed finale to the Starcatchers trilogy, authors Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson enrich the world of J.M. Barrie's original tale. Non-stop action and colorful characters keep the reader engrossed. A strong theme of family values and good friends runs throughout the series, and the delightful illustrations by Greg Call are perfectly suited in capturing this magical world. Like the previous two books, PETER AND THE SECRET OF RUNDOON stands well by itself --- but do read the others, as this is a totally outstanding set of Peter Pan adventures.

This story completes the bunch when Peter and the crew are kidnapped to a horrible kingdom where kids are slaved and the darkness of the universe has a horrible plan for the earth.
This is just as exciting as the previous two books, though I think the fantasy went a little annoyingly Star Trek at a point. Still, it was fun and witty and answered a lot of questions. Finally.

Another nice oneReview Date: 2008-09-09
The book was the standard from Cussler, exciting and enjoyable, but Cussler is getting very predictable in his story line.
One of Cussler's best novelsReview Date: 2008-09-06
The characters or larger than life, but not ridiculously so. The same is true of the Chairman's ship. What I liked most about the book was that the authors challenged the reader to think about real problems--over population, and provide information of historical events mostly unknown--Unit 731.
Unit 731 is real, and worse than described. Japanese chemical weapons and agents are still being discovered and removed in China. Medical information created by Unit 731, regardless of how horrible the methods used to obtain it, had value. At the end of WWII, the U.S. exempted one or more of senior Japanese officers from war crimes trials in order to obtain Unit 731's files. It took me a long time to finally reach the conclusion that doing so was the best option.
Stalin's Fist is based upon proposed technology. Biological warfare was a real threat during the Cold War. The Soviet Union and the U.S. had large stockpiles of biological agents and delivery systems. Spreading a virus as described in the story is possible. I thought basing the story on an ancient ship was clever.
One commenter noticed that the chief terrorist's wife changed from Heidi to Susan in Chapter 33. Unless you have written a book, it is difficult to understand how this can happen. Sometimes the author or editor decides to change a character's name. Using global search and replace, changing the name is easy--unless you decided to replace a chapter with one from an earlier draft that had the old name. Ooops. I was ready to send the manuscript of my second novel to the publisher, after numerous rereads and reviews by others. I happen to notice that I had reversed the names of two characters in a chapter. I caught the mistake while looking for something else.
Plague Ship is a great adventure read. I am waiting for the authors' next one.

Plague Ship delivers action and adventure, even if it doesn't 'float my boat'Review Date: 2008-09-04
Despite my middling thoughts about this novel, I think that if you are a fan of the genre, you'll enjoy it. It has all the ingredients: exotic locales, a bizarre evil plan, cartoonish villains, invincible heroes, daring escapes, heavily armed compounds, big explosions, and lots of henchmen. It's a big budget popcorn novel and if you're a fan, these novels can be fun in the same way that a blockbuster action movie is fun. The plot is little more than filler between action scenes.
So why did I read Plague Ship if I'm not a fan of action novels?
That's a fair question. The answer is: I didn't actually read it. I listened to it as an audio book. The selection of unabridged audio books is limited in my library and I needed something new to listen to in the car. I probably wouldn't have read the novel otherwise.
But I still want to give this novel a fair review. As I noted earlier, this is probably the best Cussler I've read (or listened to) - although I've only read four, none of them Dirk Pitt novels. I found this novel reasonably entertaining, most of the time. Strangely, my interest waned most often during the seemingly endless action sequences. (But of course, if you like chase scenes, you'll find these scenes exciting rather than `bordering on tedious' as I did). I tend to get a little impatient with these sequences because I know the characters will inevitably escape, and I'd prefer that the author just got on with it. In fact, the whole novel is unnecessarily drawn out.
As you might expect, the characters in this novel are wafer thin. There is no moral ambiguity. There are no complexities to character or plot. Everything is cut and dry. The bad guys are bad. The good guys good. (Too good if you ask me). They remind me of the Superfriends because they get along so well and are virtually impossible to kill. Of course, a lot of people like that. It`s good vs evil. That`s what these novels are all about.
Who needs well drawn characters? Why complicate things with moral ambiguity?
This is a novel about big concepts and big action scenes. It's about good guys who ride white horses and save the world from crazy madmen. And there`s nothing wrong with that. If you want big adventure, Plague Ship doesn`t disappoint. I may not be gushing with enthusiasm for the novel (although as I said, it isn`t bad) but if action novels are up your alley, Plague Ship delivers.
Personally I give it 3 stars, but admittedly, complaining that an adventure novel like this has cardboard characters and action scenes that go on and on, is a little like saying that I would have liked the Western novel I read a lot better if there weren't so many cowboys in it.
Fans of the genre should add one star to my review to compensate for my `anti-adventure novel` bias. Most Cussler fans will enjoy this novel. Really.

Pen!Review Date: 2008-09-27
Certainly, there is a lot of teacher-praising going on in this book that might be a little self-fulfilling, but I don't think that lessens the magic much, and what remains is a wonderfully clever tale of the power of determination and creativity.
And over the most mundane of things: what used to be called a pen.
Besides the wildly interesting story, Clements keeps up great character development as his lead wonders just what the price of fame is--gladly, it all ends happily and justly without any forced morals.
No wonder this is a modern kids classic.

A story to warm the heart of very child with a curious and rebellious streakReview Date: 2008-03-23
In response to Mrs. Granger's statements about the meaning of a word being based totally on how it is used, he starts calling a writing pen a frindle. The idea catches on with the other students in the school, over the opposition of Mrs. Granger and the principal. Children are required to stay after school and write one hundred times: "I am writing this punishment with a pen."
The punishment becomes a badge of honor among the students and it draws the attention of the local paper and then the news media. Once the national news media picks it up, Nick is a star and the school is forced to back down. A local businessman starts to market pens engraved with the phrase "frindle" as well as t-shirts and other merchandise. Nick becomes wealthy and the story closes with two points. The first is that Nick donates a large sum of money for scholarships and he learns that Mrs. Granger was in fact rooting for him all along.
The story is charming because it is similar to many of the biographies of successful people. Even when young, they were different, often rebellious and their teachers had a difficult time with them. They were inquisitive, puzzled and always trying to do new things. By presenting this story with a very successful and happy ending, Clements gives heart to all children who are like Nick.

WELL WORTH THE MONEY.
Let's get our friends, go the barn and put on a show!Review Date: 2008-01-25
The downside to all this is that some of the voices and "actors" used sound like cheap versions of the real cast members. There's sort of a Mickey Rooney quality to the production--almost feels like George Lucas and his buddies were sitting around a pub late at night and someone said--"Gee--why don't we put on show?" George/Mickey Rooney and his pals gather arm-in-arm dragging every friend and brother and sister of every friend, locked arm-in-arm marching to an empty barn and decide to put on a show!
In other words, there's a real amateur, unpolished feeling to some of these sections. When Anthony Daniels and Mark Hamill speak, the material takes off. When the others enter, you break into a smile and try not to burst out laughing. Check out the guy who plays Han Solo or the lady who subs for Carrie Fisher as the princess. You realize even without seeing their faces why they didn't get the parts. Thank our lucky stars!
Now, the upside. These are great for long car-rides. You play the episodes, one after the other. The kids are enthralled. Staring in the rear-view mirror, you see their eyes glaze over. They are lost in the images painted in their imagination. It's like those old newsreels in black and white of people camped out in front of their radios listening to "The Black Shadow" or some early pioneers.
Be forewarned, you will need to endure a bookend credit that repeats over and over what you're listening to, who stars in it, etc. My son pointedly complained, "Why do they keep saying the same thing over and over." Alas, it's true. You are subjected to a pelting of credits that make you want to strangle your car stereo. Stop. We get it. We know this is based on a story by George Lucas. Please don't say the cast names over and over. I promise not to complain again.
I think you should buy it and put the tracks in your iPod. And, if your kids are behaving, tell them you've got something kind of cool to play on your next long car ride. Make it a treat for them. We did. There's a snapshot in my mind looking in the rear view mirror watching my son and his two little friends sitting there, silent, staring off in to space, as if they were entranced in some magic spell. You can't ask for more than that--
