My husband and I are attempting to acquire German as another foreign language. We thought this would be helpful to add to our library. We've been using some online tutoring as well as friends and family, and have a few books by Berlitz on German. As an addition, It is good instruction, but couldn't have been more boring.

I have to admit, I am sorry I bought it, but will keep trying to use it, as it's good to have correct pronunciation. I haven't made it through the first CD yet. This actually de-motivates me. I will update this review when I get a bit further into the study.

I have read a few of Dr. Jeffers books. They are wonderful. I have one of them on tape so I could listen to it on the way to and from work. What an easy way to "get help."

This tape is fabulous. I listen to it when I go to sleep. It is narrated, as always, by Dr. Jeffers. The background music, too, is soothing to the ear and body which enhances the "session" with Dr. Jeffers. Her manner and voice are soothing to mind and spirit. I recommend it highly for a pleasant, simple and surefire way toward "inner peace."

This CD is great. I use it before I go to sleep as it covers all of the issues that usually stop me from getting to sleep. Very relaxing it does what it says in the title! Highly recommended although you may have to forgive the sound quality at times but the content is good.

I love Susan Jeffers! Her book Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway has helped me clarify what is important to me, who I want to be in the world, and the kind of life I want to live. Her works are so congruent with my own personal journey toward wholeness. I recommend that you read the book first. If it resonates with you, then you'll want her three Inner Talk CDs. I listen to Inner Talk for a Confident Day and Inner Talk for Peace of Mind almost every day. They help me achieve inward peace and remind me of what is truly important in my life. I admit that I have only listened to Inner Talk for a Love that Works a few times because it's not totally relevant to my life at the moment, but it too is very good. I could go on and on about her books and CDs. I recommend her works for anybody desiring joy, peace, love, and fulfillment in their life. She is practical, uplifting, and hugely encouraging.

This is a totally outstanding set of Peter Pan adventures

Review Date: 2008-08-11
Peter and Tinker Bell are perfectly happy on Mollusk Island. Peter and his little troop of orphaned boys live day to day in this paradise of fresh food and friendly natives. Fighting Prawn, leader of the Mollusk tribe, is indebted to Peter for saving his life, and though he doesn't care for "Englishmen," he and Peter have formed a strong bond. As content as they all are, that world will soon disappear as a carefully planned attack will turn their lives upside down. The fiercest of tribes, known as the "Scorpions," has begun an invasion of this peaceful little community. Determined to take over the island, absolutely no one will be safe from these ruthless warriors.

"In battle, the warriors sometimes hurled venomous snakes and spiders at the enemy; they also coated the tips of their arrows with a special mixture of toxins that caused horrific, paralyzing pain. It was this practice that gave the tribe its name, the most feared name in this part of the ocean: Scorpions. It was a name that meant misery and death."

Far away in London, Peter's old friend Molly Aster is planning a kind of invasion herself after discovering that her father, Lord Leonard Aster, will be going to Paris to investigate problems related to the "Starstuff fall." She is determined to go, though is definitely not invited on this journey. Molly and her friend George do serious research and discover some strange things about her father and a man known as Mr. Pan (is this Peter's father?). Finally, they manage to sneak aboard her father's ship, where they encounter and become prisoners of the evil Lord Ombra and Zarboff, King of Rundoon. The only thing worse than being in prison would be to fall victim to Zarboff's giant pet snake, Kundalini.

"He reached down and touched the dark shape next to his throne. The shape moved, and slowly a triangular head rose, the torchlight reflecting from two yellow eyes. Peter had seen snakes before; there were many on Mollusk Island. But he had never seen one half as massive as this."

For the boy who will never grow old, Peter's friendship with Molly is both sweet and poignant. They have shared so much together and will share more; still, they have the knowledge that they cannot grow up together.

"And then Molly kissed him on the lips. It was the first time either of them had ever kissed anybody on the lips, and it was a kiss they would both carry in their minds for the rest of their lives."

In this action-packed finale to the Starcatchers trilogy, authors Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson enrich the world of J.M. Barrie's original tale. Non-stop action and colorful characters keep the reader engrossed. A strong theme of family values and good friends runs throughout the series, and the delightful illustrations by Greg Call are perfectly suited in capturing this magical world. Like the previous two books, PETER AND THE SECRET OF RUNDOON stands well by itself --- but do read the others, as this is a totally outstanding set of Peter Pan adventures.

If you've read this book I seriously hope you've read the two preceeding books of this trilogy or else you'll be just a tad bit lost. That being said, this is the best book in the three part series by far. The writing is at its best, it's pollished and the typos that so plagued bothe previous books are thankfully gone so it's safe to give to kids without telling them all the grammatical messups from before. The story arch works rather well and nothing feels too forced. Instead you're offered a perspective of Peter Pan's origins that don't seem too forced and that offer a great reading experience for kids and adults. All three books should take you about a week and a half to read at the most because they are truly a light read and chapters are rarely more than ten pages long. so if you're in the mood for a light read and have always wondered where Peter Pan came from, how Tinker Bell was created, why Peter's shadow is detached from him or why that huge crock has a huge ticking clock that won't quit, you should definitely read this series.

This book is non-stop action. There is no down time. You must catch your breath after each chapter. We enjoyed the whole series immensely. Perhaps blasphemous, but this series is better than Harry Potter. No loose ends. Very tight, raucous story. The best EVER!!

If you like the notion of Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, etc. this series is really excellent. I don't use the word WONDERFUL much, but they're a great read. They really do carry on the story of Peter and his friends in a believable and fun way. Really AWESOME and you won't be disappointed. The entire series is highly recommended - all three books so far.

So this is it.

It's sad that this awesome trilogy must come to an end, but I'm happy to say that I enjoyed every minute of it, from the moment those boys and that girl met up with each other and a horrible secret to the end of this installment when Never Land finally becomes familiar.

This story completes the bunch when Peter and the crew are kidnapped to a horrible kingdom where kids are slaved and the darkness of the universe has a horrible plan for the earth.

This is just as exciting as the previous two books, though I think the fantasy went a little annoyingly Star Trek at a point. Still, it was fun and witty and answered a lot of questions. Finally.

I know just the way to make commute time feel more productive - get this collection. I enjoyed the drives that I spent listening to this. This collection, from different perspectives about one family, gave the listener a chance to really get to know the characters. Setting Seth's story much later was like a reunion with "where are they now" questions answered. I enjoyed this so much, that I was always surprised when I reached my destination! This is a wonderful series about two people who shared their lives with four children who otherwise would have ended up as statistics. Each book tells the story of a son they adopted, and the fourth book in the series tells of the last adopted son, but shows how these two people changed so many lives just by giving love. It gives you hope without hype. Buying the series makes it even better because you can immediately go from one the next and it all stays tied together neatly with no stops. Also, it's cheaper in the set than separately!

A Book for the Intellectually Honest Seeking Truth About American History
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-05
It is very unfortunate that people use the review process to attack a book which they are very unlikely to have read. It is always fascinating that the very same people who so often lecture to all of us about "tolerance" are the least so. It is particularly bothersome that Amazon chose to use one short, positive review and one very lengthy negative review. Despite some of the reviews, Mr. Goldberg's book is fair. Kool-aid drinkers from both sides of the aisle need not bother because neither side would much like what they are reading unless they are interested in truth. Whoever you are, whatever your notions, if you are opened minded, you will likely realize some of those notions require re-examination. This book is particularly helpful if you have been trying to educate yourself as much as possible about American history, have done much other reading, and are sincerely interested in seeking the truth. If you've been asking yourself: Just when did this country start to "go off the rails", you will find a lot of answers. Other well-written books about the history of Progressives, socialists, and Marxists support the documented information in this book. A couple of others I have read, and I have no idea from what political persuasion these gentlemen come, would be the very well documented book by Ronald J. Pestritto, Professor at the University of Dallas Woodrow Wilson and the Roots of Modern Liberalism (American Intellectual Culture)and another, by Richard Pipes, A Concise History of the Russian Revolution. Again, despite all of the partisan reviews, if you read at minimum, the three books noted, you will see the dots connecting. Mr. Goldberg is not about finger pointing or name calling, he's about laying out, step by step, point A to point B, etc. Michael Mann's review, in itself, is to be disregarded because he accuses Goldberg of leaving out labeling so-called "Conservatives" as the "f-word", like Richard Nixon. Mr. Mann has revealed his own lack of knowledge of historical facts or that he didn't read the book closely, or well. A number of so-called "conservatives" are mentioned, including Pres. George W. Bush. Many aspects of Pres. Bush's policies, do have, in fact, elements of the "f-word", as Mr. Mann calls it. It is a fallacy of the left or perhaps a lack of much contemplation, that every individual with an "R" behind their title in elected office are automatically conservative. Richard Nixon was not conservative, he was a "liberal" Republican. Pres. Bush's fiscal policies and "compassionate conservatism" alone disqualify him from being considered truly conservative. In order to make that assessment, as a conservative, I did much reading, but didn't arrive at my conclusions until I read this book. Until or unless people are willing to start "calling out" the wrong they see in their leadership, regardless to which political party they belong, it's hard to imagine how much, if anything, will come about to change the high amount of dissatisfaction and distrust most Americans feel about their government. To fully get one's mind around the definition of fascism, how it has weaved its way through history, and most importantly, what it means for freedom, this book is vital.

Me Dumb. Book Smart.

I liked the picture on the dust jacket. I opened the book; read the introduction, and even understood it. So far so good. Then I started reading a bunch of words in the chapters with all kinds of names of people I've never heard of. They influenced Mussolini, Wilson, Hitler, FDR, LBJ. And it kept going like that. I was looking for more one-lined Ann Coluteresque zingers like: Wilson imprisoned more political dissidents than Mussolini; FDR detained many times more non-enemy combatants (Americans mostly) than has GW Bush detained guys with guns found in combat areas; it takes a village to raise an idiot. Those kind of one-liners. Perhaps they could have been deployed at the start of each chapter to focus my meager attention span. Ultimately this book was just too smart for me. At least when I watch the Glenn Beck Show and see Jonah Goldberg as a guest, I understand what he is saying. Perhaps those thousands of Lefty Liberal College Professors should read this book, but they won't (can't be caught with it and risk tenure). As for me, I'm waiting for Mr. Goldberg to come out with a pop-up picture book.

Having read every single Clive Cussler novels, I would tag this one as okay. The characters don't seem as meaty as they were in the first collaboration with Jack DuBrul. The escapes were even more outlandish then normal and I really didn't care who won in the end. I agree with the other reviewer who said that this book was about 200 pages too long.

One of Cussler's best novels

Review Date: 2008-09-06
I have read many of Clive Cussler's novels, and I consider this to be one of his best. Since other reviewers have discussed the plot, I will comment on other aspects of the story.

The characters or larger than life, but not ridiculously so. The same is true of the Chairman's ship. What I liked most about the book was that the authors challenged the reader to think about real problems--over population, and provide information of historical events mostly unknown--Unit 731.

Unit 731 is real, and worse than described. Japanese chemical weapons and agents are still being discovered and removed in China. Medical information created by Unit 731, regardless of how horrible the methods used to obtain it, had value. At the end of WWII, the U.S. exempted one or more of senior Japanese officers from war crimes trials in order to obtain Unit 731's files. It took me a long time to finally reach the conclusion that doing so was the best option.

Stalin's Fist is based upon proposed technology. Biological warfare was a real threat during the Cold War. The Soviet Union and the U.S. had large stockpiles of biological agents and delivery systems. Spreading a virus as described in the story is possible. I thought basing the story on an ancient ship was clever.

One commenter noticed that the chief terrorist's wife changed from Heidi to Susan in Chapter 33. Unless you have written a book, it is difficult to understand how this can happen. Sometimes the author or editor decides to change a character's name. Using global search and replace, changing the name is easy--unless you decided to replace a chapter with one from an earlier draft that had the old name. Ooops. I was ready to send the manuscript of my second novel to the publisher, after numerous rereads and reviews by others. I happen to notice that I had reversed the names of two characters in a chapter. I caught the mistake while looking for something else.

Plague Ship is a great adventure read. I am waiting for the authors' next one.

Review Date: 2008-09-04
I need to qualify my review right at the start and admit I'm not really a fan of this type of novel: which is to say, high concept action adventure novels. I've read about four of the more recent Clive Cussler novels and this is probably the best one I've read. Even so, I found it only marginally entertaining.

Despite my middling thoughts about this novel, I think that if you are a fan of the genre, you'll enjoy it. It has all the ingredients: exotic locales, a bizarre evil plan, cartoonish villains, invincible heroes, daring escapes, heavily armed compounds, big explosions, and lots of henchmen. It's a big budget popcorn novel and if you're a fan, these novels can be fun in the same way that a blockbuster action movie is fun. The plot is little more than filler between action scenes.

So why did I read Plague Ship if I'm not a fan of action novels?

That's a fair question. The answer is: I didn't actually read it. I listened to it as an audio book. The selection of unabridged audio books is limited in my library and I needed something new to listen to in the car. I probably wouldn't have read the novel otherwise.

But I still want to give this novel a fair review. As I noted earlier, this is probably the best Cussler I've read (or listened to) - although I've only read four, none of them Dirk Pitt novels. I found this novel reasonably entertaining, most of the time. Strangely, my interest waned most often during the seemingly endless action sequences. (But of course, if you like chase scenes, you'll find these scenes exciting rather than `bordering on tedious' as I did). I tend to get a little impatient with these sequences because I know the characters will inevitably escape, and I'd prefer that the author just got on with it. In fact, the whole novel is unnecessarily drawn out.

As you might expect, the characters in this novel are wafer thin. There is no moral ambiguity. There are no complexities to character or plot. Everything is cut and dry. The bad guys are bad. The good guys good. (Too good if you ask me). They remind me of the Superfriends because they get along so well and are virtually impossible to kill. Of course, a lot of people like that. It`s good vs evil. That`s what these novels are all about.

Who needs well drawn characters? Why complicate things with moral ambiguity?

This is a novel about big concepts and big action scenes. It's about good guys who ride white horses and save the world from crazy madmen. And there`s nothing wrong with that. If you want big adventure, Plague Ship doesn`t disappoint. I may not be gushing with enthusiasm for the novel (although as I said, it isn`t bad) but if action novels are up your alley, Plague Ship delivers.

Personally I give it 3 stars, but admittedly, complaining that an adventure novel like this has cardboard characters and action scenes that go on and on, is a little like saying that I would have liked the Western novel I read a lot better if there weren't so many cowboys in it.

Fans of the genre should add one star to my review to compensate for my `anti-adventure novel` bias. Most Cussler fans will enjoy this novel. Really.

It doesn't matter if you're in business or not, no matter who you are, you'll enjoy getting a fresh perspective that applies to business and our personal lives too. The book slows down towards the end, but overall it's a must read!

Let me just say, I have read two books by Jim Collins and his research team and I have not been at all disappointed. All chapters were explained without complex sentence writings and without all the extra stuff. For example, "Resiliency (not perfection) is the signature of greatness, be it in a person, an organization, or a nation." Jim Collins provided within each chapter insights on how to achieve at any position within a corporate company such as an employee, manager, senior executive, board member, and CEO. The book does mainly talk about people at the "top" but, the research information speaks for itself. Comparing companies such as Procter and Gamble, Walt Disney, Merck, Johnson and Johnson, Wal-Mart to Colgate, Columbia Pictures, Pfizer, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Ames, respectively. The researchers group and Jim Collins provided and proved what facts can represent to a reader. If you are willing to take your time and read with a understanding that anyone can create a "visionary company" of tomorrow. Highly Recommended to all future leaders with the pursue of how to develop what works and what doesn't.

I enjoyed reading this book very much. It seems the company and the organization as an organic system within a larger system, and which purpose is not simply to make money (although, companies managed this way always do). It brings also the importance of the human side into management and how important it is to have a solid system of core values, beliefs, principles and mission. I highly recommended together with Good To Great, even in spite of the fact that some of the covered companies (like Ford, Sony, and Motorola) not being able to keep their greatness consistently.

I cannot read this book without being charmed over and over again; at my age it is a quick and delightful read that instantly shuttles me back to the golden age of elementary school and that one kid that just had to egg everyone on.

Certainly, there is a lot of teacher-praising going on in this book that might be a little self-fulfilling, but I don't think that lessens the magic much, and what remains is a wonderfully clever tale of the power of determination and creativity.

And over the most mundane of things: what used to be called a pen.

Besides the wildly interesting story, Clements keeps up great character development as his lead wonders just what the price of fame is--gladly, it all ends happily and justly without any forced morals.

No wonder this is a modern kids classic.

Frindle is one of the most entertaining kids' books out there because it encourages kids to be bold and creative and wait for big results. I love the way the fun premise turns out to be a sneaky way to teach kids about etymology and the evolution of language. This one goes to the top of the class!

A story to warm the heart of very child with a curious and rebellious streak

This book should be a classic, it demonstrates how a child can rebel against his teachers and yet do it in a positive way. Nick Allen is a bit of a troublemaker in school; he has many "good" ideas and is always trying them out. He reaches fifth grade, and the only language arts teacher is the elderly Mrs. Granger. When one of his ideas goes astray, Nick is required to develop a presentation to the whole class. In typical Nick style, he develops a long presentation that effectively uses up the entire class period.
In response to Mrs. Granger's statements about the meaning of a word being based totally on how it is used, he starts calling a writing pen a frindle. The idea catches on with the other students in the school, over the opposition of Mrs. Granger and the principal. Children are required to stay after school and write one hundred times: "I am writing this punishment with a pen."
The punishment becomes a badge of honor among the students and it draws the attention of the local paper and then the news media. Once the national news media picks it up, Nick is a star and the school is forced to back down. A local businessman starts to market pens engraved with the phrase "frindle" as well as t-shirts and other merchandise. Nick becomes wealthy and the story closes with two points. The first is that Nick donates a large sum of money for scholarships and he learns that Mrs. Granger was in fact rooting for him all along.
The story is charming because it is similar to many of the biographies of successful people. Even when young, they were different, often rebellious and their teachers had a difficult time with them. They were inquisitive, puzzled and always trying to do new things. By presenting this story with a very successful and happy ending, Clements gives heart to all children who are like Nick.

This is a great book. This book is about a scheming kid named Nick who loves to waste class time. So he comes up with schemes to distract teachers from their subjects. In fifth grade he gets a teacher with staring mean eyes. So he tries to trick her, it doesn't work. That trick ends up giving him a long paper to do. I have trouble finding books, but this book was great! You may think it's too short but this book packs a lot of action.

Well . . .

My daughter read this. Basically, some kids start a movement to call pens "frindles." That's the point. The sort of annoying behavior we see in real life is also annoying when depicted in pointless fiction like this. My 10-year old avid reader is a sharp and qualified critic, and she didn't like this one.

If you're a fan of the first three movies, can quote lines and get lost in the moment when you see the movies on TV, this is another way to get a semi-Star Wars fix. It's a dramatization that played on NPR Radio based on the original story and films by George Lucas. Keep in mind, it isn't exactly the same material. It expands the story here and there, and it eliminates certain moments that take up time in the film with little or no dialogue. For example, when Luke gets captured by the Wampa, gets placed upside down in the ice cave and waves his light saber cutting off the Yeti-like creature's arm, all you get in the audio version is a guy saying "I got captured by a Wampa."

The downside to all this is that some of the voices and "actors" used sound like cheap versions of the real cast members. There's sort of a Mickey Rooney quality to the production--almost feels like George Lucas and his buddies were sitting around a pub late at night and someone said--"Gee--why don't we put on show?" George/Mickey Rooney and his pals gather arm-in-arm dragging every friend and brother and sister of every friend, locked arm-in-arm marching to an empty barn and decide to put on a show!

In other words, there's a real amateur, unpolished feeling to some of these sections. When Anthony Daniels and Mark Hamill speak, the material takes off. When the others enter, you break into a smile and try not to burst out laughing. Check out the guy who plays Han Solo or the lady who subs for Carrie Fisher as the princess. You realize even without seeing their faces why they didn't get the parts. Thank our lucky stars!

Now, the upside. These are great for long car-rides. You play the episodes, one after the other. The kids are enthralled. Staring in the rear-view mirror, you see their eyes glaze over. They are lost in the images painted in their imagination. It's like those old newsreels in black and white of people camped out in front of their radios listening to "The Black Shadow" or some early pioneers.

Be forewarned, you will need to endure a bookend credit that repeats over and over what you're listening to, who stars in it, etc. My son pointedly complained, "Why do they keep saying the same thing over and over." Alas, it's true. You are subjected to a pelting of credits that make you want to strangle your car stereo. Stop. We get it. We know this is based on a story by George Lucas. Please don't say the cast names over and over. I promise not to complain again.

I think you should buy it and put the tracks in your iPod. And, if your kids are behaving, tell them you've got something kind of cool to play on your next long car ride. Make it a treat for them. We did. There's a snapshot in my mind looking in the rear view mirror watching my son and his two little friends sitting there, silent, staring off in to space, as if they were entranced in some magic spell. You can't ask for more than that--

May the Force Be With You!

This particular Odyssey had enough intrigued to keep our daughter intersted but not so much that she became scared or confused. I love the fact that some of the stories continue on and that it causes thought provoking questions from her. I don't know about some of you, but I am egstatic that she is learing life lessons at the same time she is having fun. She often chooses a story at night to listen to continuously.

I have listened to Adventures in Odyssey for 8 years, It is by far the greatest Radio Drama Series I have ever heard. The genius in Odyssey consists not only of the interesting stories, characters, and superb writing. But, in the understated comedy of the show, When listening to this you will find yourself smiling, and laughing (and maybe even falling off your chair) In the midst of the craziness and stress of life. It teaches christian values and principals, all while keeping kids laughing and interested, Though its geared toward children, its a show for all ages. With something to keep everyone interested. This particular Odyssey album Into the Light, is a fantastic example of everything Odyssey has represented throughout the years. As the 47th album in a long line of wonderful albums, It definately lives up to Odysseys legacy. I would highly recommend this album and all the others to people of every age. You will not be sorry, and you'll catch yourself buying up all the other albums as well.... A very worth while investment.
