The BFG is the Big Friendly Giant whose values get him in a heap of trouble among bigger and not-so-friendly giants. My kids LOVE this story that we originally borrowed from the library. When I saw amazon's great price, I had to buy 2. One for us and one to gift away. Roald Dahl is at his best here and as a teacher, I enjoyed pondering the potential geography lesson applications from this story. No matter why you buy it the book is loaded with teachable moments and lots of heart.

I gave this to my 7 year old grandson so he could listen to it before we went to a children's theater to see The Big Friendly Giant. He loved listening to the 4 hours of story, and because he knew the story and all the characters, the play really came alive for him. The actual book is above his reading level, so the tape was a good way for him to hear the story.

Car Talk: The Greatest Stories Ever Told: Once Upon a Car Fire... (Car Talk) I've fogotten how to listen to my radio(s) because they make me mad when I can't find a clear station or a certain station. So I don't hear Car Talk often enough in real time. I have been buying books to read to myself (but bothering others) by bursting into sharp and loud laughter, or with CD's in the car where I can laugh and laugh all alone. I connect with your family because ours is much the same except we don't laugh much anymore. I FORGOT HOW TO DO IT! Thanks for reminding me, guys!

I guess you either love these guys or you hate them. My wife finds them incredibly annoying when she hears them on the radio.

Myself, I love them. Their accents are not off-putting to me, and I love how they laugh together.

What I've learned over time, though, is that the 'straight' answers they provide are actually pretty authoritative. They actually know what they're talking about, based not only on their extensive formal education but also based on their hands-on work with many, many cars.

If I personally found anything annoying, it's only their constant self-referencing which gets old. However, it's a part of their "shtick" which we would not want to do without...

The book is well researched and is interesting reading. It's amazing to see the same political arguements in 1934 as in 2008. They were using class warfare in 1934 same as now.

I was given this book as a Christmas present. I had read McCullough's 1776 and John Adams and had enjoyed them both (although I was disappointed in the brevity of 1776). Still this book (Truman) stayed on my shelf gathering dust for over six months. I was initially overwhelmed with its length and afraid to tackle it (I had failed with Vidal's Lincoln and didn't want to repeat that result). I finally screwed my courage and cracked it open.

Although the first 50 pages or so weren't extremely engrossing, after that the book quickly captivated me. I didn't know much about Harry Truman, and what I did know led me to believe that he was a fairly average president. What I learned is that he was an amazing overachiever who, when faced with the weight of the world, was at his best. McCullough really brought the man to life, and although Mr. Truman did some things that none of us would be proud of, McCullough didn't provide excuses for Harry - he did explain possible causes for Truman's behavior.

After reading this book, you can't help but feeling that the United States was extremely fortunate to have Truman in the nation's highest office, and you can't help but wish you could have met the man.

I wholeheartedly recommend the book as a must read.

A brilliant biography

"Truman" is a much praised book and deservedly so. There is hardly a need for another review, in addition to the 280 already posted here, so I will be brief.

Above all, it is superbly readable, as entertaining as a good novel. I experienced a sense of regret having finished it today.

It is a clear and balanced portrait of a leader and a wonderful study of understated, firm and steady leadership.

I would rate it as essential reading for anyone wanting to understand key aspects of the world since WWII and which continue to influence events today.

I consider myself a fan of history (I like it, but don't know enough and mis-remember even more). David McCullough's books bring to life the stories of our country (and events) in a compelling manner that makes you want more. I eagerly look forward to each of his well researched and "human" look at what has helped shape the U.S. to where we are today. Each of these should be required reading for middle school & high school students - the conversations they create will bring benefits for our future generations. This is even more true for the biographies as he develops the person which helps explain the why - and not just the what happened. Bravo Mr. McCullough, very well done indeed.

You Have To Read THIS Book!

This is quite possibly one of the best books I've ever read. And I do my fair share of reading. Don't let the size of the book scare you either. Its worth putting the time into. David McCullough writes in a readable manner. None of that academic reading stuff that gives you headaches. Listen, if you are even considering buying it you probably already have a little interest in this topic. Do yourself a favor. Buy this book. You can thank me later. Oh, and...Harry is my new hero.

i really loved this book. i read it as a recommendation of the author of the Twilight Serives (Stephenie Meyer). This book definitely lived up to the expectation of being a page turner. Suzanne Collin's writing style is sharp, biting, vivid & illustrative. the premise is also interesting. set in the future, food is a scarcity, the government uses a tactic to suppress rebellion: the hunger games. one boy and one girl (from ages 12-18) are chosen from each district to fight to the death. the reward is life and also retribution and glory for their district. i was hooked from the beginning and i can't wait for the next book!!

The blurb originally piqued my interest for this book and after reading the first chapter through Amazon it was clear to me that it would be very worth while for me to buy it. I live in Australia (where it has not been published yet) and those 2 weeks of waiting for this book really were tough for me.

The plot is simple and brutal and really made me feel for the self-sacraficing and authentically careing main character (which is not often for me with girl protagonists) and in more than a few ways reminded me of John Mardsen's books in the Tomorrow Series. However the part of this book that really kept me intrigued was the sadistic 'Game' aspect that allows the readers to really conect with the characters (especially Katiniss) in the feelings towards the Capitol and in turn the need for her to survive... oh and i guess the interest in the relationship with the Bakers Son: Peeta.

Suzanne Collins was able to hold my interest throughout the book with the relationships formed and broken as well as the mystery behind the 'Game' in which i could never could quite tell what made so uneasy about it (apart from of course the mallicious nature of forcing children to kill each other for a nation's entertainment). The promise of more books to come is intriguing and i am certain i want to be one of the first to find out what happens next.

Like i said before, if you liked John Marsdens, Tomorrow Series mixed in with a little romance and a good handfull of heartache then this is a book you will deffinitely want to check out soon.

The best indicator of a good "teen fiction" book is an appeal to adults. I enjoyed this story and my teen years are 30 years behind me.

Others have detailed the story, so I won't elaborate, but suffice it to say that I have always enjoyed science fiction and this book did not disappoint. Suzanne Collins has created a believable future and the characters felt honest and real.

I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in this series.

This tape course is great for people who really want/need in-depth Japanese lessons or review. You get a good idea of sentence structure and pronunciation. However, if you are trying to learn some basic Japanese for a short-term trip, this is not the tape for you. You need to know how to ask for basic items (food, beverages, train tickets, the bathroom). I've travelled to Japan once, and plan to go again, and I don't think I'll need to know how to say "It's a big new car" or "Let's go to a concert" to a total stranger on the street. Buy this tape if you need some support for reglar Japanese lessons, or just want to generally improve your understanding of the language for business or regular travel. Nice set-up, but not practical for day-to-day needs.

At the moment I've almost finished with the 2nd disc of lessons, and already I can communicate with some of my friends with the phrases I've learned. Of course, it's designed for the absolute beginner, but that's what I am so it's working well.

I've heard these are difficult if you don't have much of a commute. My commute is about half an hour long each way, and that's more than enough time to get through a lesson.

Coming from the Pimsleur method of learning Japanese, this audio course felt rushed, and I felt I couldn't absorb as much information.

The vocabulary words are shot at you 10-15 at a time, and there is little review before the next set of vocab, causing me to have to listen to each 1-minute-long "mile marker" over and over again.

This is to Pimsleur as trying to memorize a dictionary is to learning from a textbook.

It just doesn't seem prudent to listen to in the car because I find myself either listening to the 1-minute tracks on repeat until they sink in, or listen to a bunch at a time, and retaining nothing because the quizzing and recall flies by so quickly.

Also, the response time is extremely short. I can barely answer the question in English in that amount of time.

ALL THAT SAID, a strong vocabulary is necessary obviously, and I am eager to get to a level where this tape will be useful for me. For right now, I'm going to settle for the Pimsleur method of simple vocabulary, and focusing on grammar and sentence structure.

This is a great product to use if you want conversational skills. I have many persian friends and I wanted to have some conversational skills to meet some iranians visiting from overseas. I have only completed 4 lessons ( there are 5 audio CDs with 2 lessons each on them) and I really impressed some natives who think I have more vocabulary than I really do. Its because this method teaches you conversational skills. You learn phrases, not individual words which makes it helpful. It is quick but repetitive. I would highly reccomend it.

I'm a retired foreign service officer who has experience with many kinds of language learning. The Pimsleur approach, in my view, does an excellent job of challenging you and yet reinforcing what you already half-know. Starting a new language, you need to focus on pronunciation and accent. These 5 CDs give you plenty of practice on these fundamentals. The diction is crisp. The vocabulary includes no extraneous words; just the ones you will inevitably need over and over again. Pimsleur does not coddle you. You need to be on your toes to respond, exactly as you would be in a real conversation in Iran. And there's the bonus of qualifying for Dari and Tajik at the same time, given their closeness to Farsi. I thoroughly enjoyed working on this minicourse, and it whetted my appetite for more.

I have read a few of Dr. Jeffers books. They are wonderful. I have one of them on tape so I could listen to it on the way to and from work. What an easy way to "get help."

This tape is fabulous. I listen to it when I go to sleep. It is narrated, as always, by Dr. Jeffers. The background music, too, is soothing to the ear and body which enhances the "session" with Dr. Jeffers. Her manner and voice are soothing to mind and spirit. I recommend it highly for a pleasant, simple and surefire way toward "inner peace."

I love Susan Jeffers! Her book Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway has helped me clarify what is important to me, who I want to be in the world, and the kind of life I want to live. Her works are so congruent with my own personal journey toward wholeness. I recommend that you read the book first. If it resonates with you, then you'll want her three Inner Talk CDs. I listen to Inner Talk for a Confident Day and Inner Talk for Peace of Mind almost every day. They help me achieve inward peace and remind me of what is truly important in my life. I admit that I have only listened to Inner Talk for a Love that Works a few times because it's not totally relevant to my life at the moment, but it too is very good. I could go on and on about her books and CDs. I recommend her works for anybody desiring joy, peace, love, and fulfillment in their life. She is practical, uplifting, and hugely encouraging.

This course, as with all Pimsleurs courses, is the best way to start your study of Greek. After doing the 16 lessons you can jump into one of the other "learn yourself" type courses with a good head start. It also prevents you from creating bad habits sometimes formed by the wrong use of some transliterations or pronunciation explanations given in books. Go through it BEFORE you start any book and you will already have learned some of the basic structures. Very little vocabulary however. You may continue with Pimsleur's complete course afterwards. Highly recommemded.

This is a great method of learning enough to get you through a vacation in Greece. My only complaint is that it doesn't go far enough and they don't make a Level 2. However, for going into shops, greeting people, etc, it's perfect. Doesn't take a lot of time; maybe 30 minutes a day and you'll get enough. There are other programs out there, like Rosetta Stone, that might be better if you wanted to actually live or work in Greece, but, for the casual tourist, this is perfect.

Absent a Spanish speaking pal, Pimsleur is all I have to keep me speaking, and I have become very attached to the two "native" speakers, the man, the woman, who have remained on board thru I and II. Pimselur really works, IMO, because, for one, it uses bi-lingual teaching. My friend, who does not speak any Spanish, teaches ESL, and one of his students was not really learning much English until he had her use the Pimsleur basic ESL. The student jumped ahead of the other students in the class. "It was like magic!" said my friend.

But Pimsleur absolutely must be supplemented with written material so that literate adults can use their most powerful ally in education: literacy. Would you like to learn Spanish from those who merely speak it, or from those who both write/read and speak it? Pimsleur's scripts had long since introduced the "have/had-'past'" forms of hacer--ha hablado-- before I realized these were two words, the first beginning with an "h". And I realized this only after using another course that uses both written and spoken material, so I SAW the words in print, and this provided powerful reinforcement to the Pimsleur audio drills. The audio method is great, friendly, organic, but not enuf by itself. I don't see that a serious learner should set up a contest between Pimsleur and other methods; use any and everything thing you can get.

a bit pricey you say?

Other reviewers have already adequately listed the reasons for using the Pimsleur method. I did all three levels of Italian and have a excellent proficiency in the language (especially pronunciation).

However, the price for these CDs is a bit high in my opinion. Pimsleur could actually make more $ by lowering the price because many more people would then buy it. I think it's an exorbitant price and a ridiculous burden on a poor little consumer who's trying to become bilingual. Anyway.

Definitely use Pimsleur, it is great! -- my only suggestion is that you check your local library before forking out the cash. I live in a pretty big city and was able through circulation request to obtain all 3 levels on CD. I then burned all 27 or so discs onto my computer into mp3s and listened to them on a portable device. Thus learning Italiano for free ;)

If you're computer proficient and really cheap like me also try a file-sharing network like Limewire - many people share Pimsleur language audio tracks (or the whole program as one file) just like music. Just a suggestion...

Although I have no regrets about using Pimsleur Spanish II, I am not 100% satisfied. After finishing the Pimsleur series I have learned some Spanish but I don't think that I have learned as much Spanish as I thought that I would have learned. As a couple of reviewers already pointed out, Pimsleur does not cover as much Spanish as the FSI Spanish method (but I paid several times more).

There are a bunch of reasons why I feel this way. But as a couple of reviewers have already mentioned, Pimsleur does not do a good job teaching the subjunctive mood. Pimsleur does a terrific job teaching basic topics such as asking about the weather, greetings, inquiring about the price of things. But it doesn't do so well teaching more complex topics like the subjuncitve mood and other more advanced topics. And when Pimsleur does cover the subjunctive mood its coverage is limited to the subjunctive mood in the present tense. FSI Programmtic Spanish Two covers the subjunctive in the past and present. It is almost impossible to be fluent in Spanish without having a solid grasp of the subjunctive mood in the past as well as the present tense.

The subjunctive mood isn't the only area of Spanish that Pimsluer either failed to cover or did not thoroughly cover. I have compiled a list with some but not all of the areas that I found thoroughly covered in FSI Programmatic Spanish Two but not in Pimsleur Spanish.

1. use of "mas de" instead of "mas de lo que" or "mas que"
2. use of "por" vs. "para"

Pimsleur is good for learning basic phrases suchs as "I eat," "I ate," "I have eaten" and "I am going to eat." Unlike FSI Programmatic Spanish Two, Pimsleur does not do a good job with more advanced sentence structure like "I would eat," "I hadn't eaten until now," "I would've/shoud've/could've eaten," "I may have eaten" "I would like to eat", "I am glad that you are eating," "I am glad that you ate already,"
"I am glad that you've eaten already," "I am glad that you had eaten before" "I would be glad if you had eaten already," etc.

Depending on whether you wish to speak Spanish fluently the above topics and the ability to form more complex sentences may or may not be important to you. You can still buy Pimsleur II. I have no regrets about buying it. But if you want to take your Spanish to the next level of conversation, you should seriously consider FSI Programmatic Spanish Level Two.

Wonderful Introduction to Spanish but doesn't work too well against the Merciless

I agree with the reviewer that said that this course is good for beginners. I would not recommend it for anyone other than a beginner. Pimsluer is a wonderful introduction to Spanish but not much more than that. If you really want to take your Spanish beyond the beginner level you are going to need a lot more than Pimsleur. I am probably better off than most Pimsleur "students" because I have done a number of Spanish courses (besides Pimsleur) and read many Spanish books, including grammar books, vocabulary/phrase books, and even short story books. I know at least one person that has limited her learning to Pimsleur. To cut down on costs we decided to take private classes together. Just the two of us and a private instructor. Previously, my friend had only done the Pimsluer course. Using Pimsleur as her sole resource for learning Spanish only prepared her to speak to the COMPASSIONATE and MERCIFULL Spanish speakers -- like our instructor -- I am referring to the Spanish speakers that realize my friend has only learned the fundamentals of Spanish. My friend does fine when speaking to our instructor and other compassionate and merciful Spanish speakers because they understand that my friend's Spanish is limited and therefore they speak to her slowly and clearly. But when it comes time to speak to a Spanish speaker who is merciless and refuses to slow down his or her speech and is chopping up syllables like a chef in a Japanese restaurant, my friend doesn't have a clue what is being said. To give you an idea of what I mean a young man from the Dominican Republic was invited to one of our classes as a guest native Spanish speaker. His first question to her in Spanish was "do you speak Spanish?" and she did not understand the question. I admit that he said the question with a heavy Dominican accent that cuts off the "s" sound and his question sounded more like a rapidly garbled "abla 'panol?" as opposed to the clearly spoken "habla usted espanol?" that she probably was expecting to hear as in the Pimsleur courses. However, his question didn't confuse me for even a second because I have not limited myself to Pimsleur. So what does this all mean? Pimsluer is a wonderful introduction to Spanish but not more than an introduction. If you really want to reach a conversational level and understand the Spanish of native speakers you will have to use a lot more than Pimsleur.

Pimsleur is an all audio Spanish course. I have listed some of the other audio or primarily audio courses that I have used and how I rate them. Among the economically priced courses:

1. Behind the Wheel Spanish/Complete Illustrated Text/Answer Keys/8 One Hour 5 Stars
2. Michel Thomas Speak Spanish For Beginners: 10-CD Beginner's Program (Michel Thomas Speak...) 4 Stars
3. Learn in Your Car Spanish Complete Language Course (Learn in Your Car) 3 Stars

Among the big-ticket priced courses:

1 Learning Spanish Like Crazy: Spoken Spanish, Vol. 1 5 Stars
2. Learning Like Crazy Spoken Spanish Vol. 2 5 Stars
3. Spanish I - 2nd Rev. Ed.: Learn to Speak and Understand Spanish with Pimsleur Language Programs (Comprehensive) 4 Stars
4. Pimsleur Spanish II 3 Stars

After I bought this CD and the Abundance book in hardcover, I noticed the CD comes free with the book. I gave a friend one of the CDs, and we worked through the instructions together with positive results.

Some reviewers have complained about the many spiritual references to the Bible. Please do not let that deter you from doing the exercises on this CD. These exercises will help you become aware of your real beliefs about money and wealth, and help you finally shake lack in your life.

I strongly recommend getting the companion Abundance book in hardcover. It not only has this CD for free, but revised the text since the original 1987 edition.

I must be a little naive...

I was not familiar with John Randolf Price before buying this CD and if I had known what I was buying I would have passed. No where on the front cover or on his book "The Abundance Book" does it tell you that it is a scripture based program. I was taken a little by surprise with all of the bible references and call me naive but I was not expecting that. I listened to the CD a couple of times and there are some good ideas but with so much bible reference it was not really for me. None of the printed material pointed to the content being scripture based and personally I think it should have been presented in a more straightforward way on the packaging.

Meditate & Create

I'm about 2 weeks into this 40 Day Prosperity Plan, using the CD version of the book. Initially, I loved to listen while I walked on the otherwise dull treadmill, or as I relaxed in the tub. That's how it all began. NOW, I am so immersed that I meditate each morning and evening, and I have fully begun to really understand the concepts. It will possibly take me the full 40 days, and that's okay, because I really am becoming addicted to the soothing sound of JRP's voice. It does, however, make good sense to buy the written version so that the meditations are easier memorized and meditated upon. The biblical references were something I needed to adjust to, considering myself non-denominational. However, that was easily rectified as I claim my own definition of God Source. I'll check back once my 40 days are up and let you know how the program is working for me. Thanks Price, for another priceless package. I thoroughly enjoyed the Super Beings years ago. And it looks as if this 40 Day Prosperity Plan is another winner! Blessings in the Mire

John Randolph Price knows things that most people do not know. The best thing about the 40 Day Prosperity Plan is that one does not have to fully understand it for it to work. I keep mine playing in my car cd player all the time and my finances just keep getting better and better. Gradually, I am understanding more and more of the high concepts that he shares. Thank you, JRP!
