Wanna learn french? This series is excellent for beginners or people who want a nice, thorough review. The complete learning course comes with the activity book, the videos (DVD), and cassettes or cds to listen too. The videos are patterned in the style of a soap opera, following the actions of a young, half american-half french gentleman named Robert who moves to Paris to "find himself". Upon meeting a beautiful young lady named Mireille, we track Robert as he encounters typical everyday scenarios in Paris. For example, catching a taxi, riding the metro, or visiting historic sites like the Eiffel Tower.

Each episode ends with Professor Capretz walking us through the lesson and recapping new words, phrases, and other colloquialisms familiar to the french language. An excellent course for those who are serious and disciplined enough to learn a language on their own. Highly recommended.

I had exactly one year of French with this course, in summer school, several years before moving to France. When I got to France, I got a job almost immediately answering the telephone; before I knew it, I had got a job taking dictation and was getting requests for translation of artists' catalogues, scientific papers, poetry, and everything else imaginable. The French I spoke was both current and correct, and everyone felt at ease working with me. Pierre Capretz's method is entirely different from everyone else's method out there, and the use of clips from radio and TV commercials makes this better for understanding different people speaking to you rather than the same two over and over as in other courses, as French accents differ wildly. I recommend this to all my voice students.

C'est vraiment excellent! Great with the books or for practice in the car

Used in combination with the audio materials, this course promises so much more than the usual (colors, numbers, basic greetings, etc.), and places a strong emphasis on pronunciation and idioms. You finish with a useful knowledge of French--the kind people actually speak. Comprehension is difficult at first because the speakers talk at a normal pace without overemphasizing the words, but it is this technique that leaves one able to know what people are saying without having them slow down.

As for the method of delivery--it's fun! The textbook follows a narrative structure, specifically a story about Robert, an American student in France, and Mireille, a young and witty student at the famed Sorbonne in Paris. There is love, mystery, and lots of important cultural information on the way, as well as an underlying humor that made our class laugh quite often. I recommend it highly for use in a class, and if you are willing to dish out the cash, for independent study as well. It has everything you need to gain a firm grounding in French language, culture, and idioms.

The audio program complements both text and workbooks and is essential in learning the pronunciation, as well as for practicing hearing and understanding French spoken at full speed. Many of the exercises also work well without the books and can be used in the car.

This is an excellent introduction to French. You will need the textbook that must be ordered separately. I still have not found Part two of this product which would finish off the learning of basic French at about the second year level at a university in the states.

Thought a bit preachy about vegeterarinism. Felt author spend too many chapters on trying to convince the benefits of vegeterian diets. Also recommended people have occasional colonics. A treatment that has been researched and have been not found to release toxins and well as cleaning the colon to prevent diseases. And as a nurse can say that colonics can be harmful and dangerous. This author has no medical background to recommend fasting or any type of so called body detoxification.

This is certainly an important subject; and I applaud people who address the issues adressed in this book; however, Quantum Wellness does not do a good job of explaining the material. The author makes statements; but does not document her findings. This is not a reference book by any means; more a description of her own journey.

Add my name to the list. I am now a fan of Kathy Freston and enthusiastically endorse Quantum Wellness: A Practical and Spiritual Guide to Health and Happiness ... a definitive, instructive, and intriguing book on ways each of us on can protect the environment, improve our state of health, and sense of purpose. Her methodology makes it easy for people like me who have difficulty changing bad habits. Lao Tzu, Father of Taoism, once said: "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step". To me, his philosophy is the essence of this delightful book. The author asks the reader to take small steps while changing bad habits into good ... and then increase the level of difficulty while developing confidence and improving skill levels.

She calls it Quantum Wellness. I call it, a marvelous way to make a difference in the world. She shows the cause and effect we have with plants, the environment, and especially animals. After researching the severe and harsh conditions in which animals are housed, fed, and killed ... I am having a difficult time eating my top sirloin, nowadays. If we are what we eat, I need to eat something else! (The book provides viable alternatives.)

Readers should note the author focuses not on just one aspect of improving one's lifestyle; she gives salient advice on taking care of your spirit, mind, and body (multi-dimensional experience). I have a friend who smokes, drinks alcohol, and is morbidly obese. I asked why she engaged in destructive behavior. She answered: "Because it makes me feel good at the time". The problem with her reasoning is she feels good for a few minutes, only to feel badly for a lifetime. I purchased an extra copy of the book for her. It is a perfect reference source for anyone with low self esteem. All steps in the book will require some sacrifice. However, if you are willing to inconvenience yourself for a few minutes (i.e., exercise thirty minutes daily) I believe you will reap the benefits of Quantum Wellness for a Lifetime. The audio CD is very good tool for beginners who need to know more about selling techniques , however you need to know that :
1. The target customers are clients of commidities purchase and not business to business approach.
2. Mostly the audience need to be english native language to get most of the lecture in pure english accent.

Other than this it's great resource to invest and "value for money".

Harper Lee was encouraged to write some of her childhood memories. What in the beginning seems like the story of three childhood friends in depression era Macomb, Alabama, turns out to be packed with insights to the makeup of human kind.

This story is intriguing on many levels from the history of the area to the stereotyping of people. Most of all every turn was a surprise as told in the first person from the view of Scout Finch. And instead of telling the story in a six year old vocabulary she uses an exceptionally large repertoire to describe the people and events. This story is not as slow passed as one may guess from first glance as every remark and every action will be needed for a future action.

A major controversial part of the story is the trial of Tom Robinson. Hoverer this is just a catalyst to help Scout understand the nature of people including her father Atticus and you will find that as important as it is it is just a part of the story with other major characters such as Arthur "Boo" Radley.

Even thought it appears that Scout is the recipient of the insights, I believe we the reader is the real recipient.

I can truly say that this book has changed my outlook in life.

Dr. Goleman writes a compelling book, filled with interesting findings. We learn that we are predisposed to connect with others, and the role of the brain, dopamines etc. in our relationships. I loved reading about how our emotions are involved in our relationships. Any reader who is interested in social neuroscience, should read this book. As I am a great fan of Rosalene Glickman's philosophy "The purpose of relationships is to be our best self regardless of the circumstances", I recommend Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self. Read both books!

In 1995, as an officer in the US Submarine force, I read Goleman's first book - "Emotional Intelligence". It was an eye-opener for someone in a leadership role operating under unusual and extremely stressful conditions. None of my military leadership training, nor any of my mentors in the military, had prepared me for leading people on an emotional level.

Naturally, Goleman's most recent book strikes a similar chord. Whether it's a social, business or casual interaction, this book explains many of the fundamental dynamics of the human brain when interacting with another person. While much of it seems intuitive, and many of the referenced sytudies have been cited in other works, this book packages it all together rather nicely. Fans of the Cameron Diaz/Ben Stiller movie "There's Something About Mary" will even recognize a scientific correlation to the famed "don't go out with a loaded gun" discussion. (No, not the unconventional hair gel, but the condition of the male brain after the fact.)

Combined with "The Tipping Point", this book makes the required reference library for any marketeer.

Intelligence + Awareness = Healthy Relationships! (translation: Read this Book!)

Review Date: 2008-05-24
Daniel Goleman's book, "Social Intelligence- The New Science of Human Relationships", is a thought-provoking, analytical immersion in how people interact with one another on a daily basis. Goleman is perhaps widely recognized for his earlier success when he wrote about a similar theme in his previous book Emotional Intelligence.

Goleman's theories are intellectually stimulating and applicable in daily living. Case by case, the author is thoroughly able to prove his hypothesis- that healthy human interaction is directly connected to well being, tranquility, and a general sense of happiness. Goleman writes in depth about social awareness and social facility. He states that social awareness is possible by "instantaneously sensing another's inner state" and that this awareness itself can lead to mutually satisfying communication. As we live our daily lives, our social interactions, both with strangers and those within our familiar circle can grow richer and easier each and every day, as long as we remain socially `aware'.

Goleman's insights remind me of two of my favorite authors Ariel and Shya Kane. The Kanes have written two wonderful and inspiring books entitled Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenmentand Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation. Both books are full of incredible and insightful examples of how their friends and family members were able to attain well being and satisfaction in their lives by simply developing self awareness and awareness of others. Their technique is called Instantaneous Transformation. It's easy to understand and apply in your daily life- and the results are really instantaneous! In one of my favorite passages in Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation, the Kanes define awareness as "a non-judgmental witnessing, viewing or seeing of yourself and how you interact with your life." Imagine living a life that is free of judgment- that you could actually allow yourself to interact with others without the need to hide behind societal labels? Imagine living your life with free and easy communication- and interacting with your life exactly as it shows up without predetermined preferences! The Kanes offer numerous insights on how to make all of the above possible.

The Kanes' books allows for practical application that seems to nicely compliment Goleman's theories. I highly recommend that you read all three books as companion pieces.

To get the most out of social intelligence

Review Date: 2008-07-25
For Goleman fans, who seek an in-depth coverage of the scientific
research behind social intelligence, this book will satisfy. It can be an essential resource for researchers and human development practitioners, but may have less appeal for those seeking a more applied, "how-to" explanation. Goleman provides lots of scientific tidbits, but little advice on how to actually describe, assess, or teach social intelligence as a set of practical competencies. As with his first book, "Emotional Intelligence: Why It May Be More Important than IQ," educators and business users will find it necessary to develop their own methods for application.

It's worth noting that this book was published a year after the publication of Dr. Karl Albrecht's book, "Social Intelligence: the New Science of Success." Albrecht's book offers a more practical, "street level" treatment of the subject, with a five-point descriptive model of social intelligence, ("S.P.A.C.E.," which stands for Situational Awareness, Presence, Authenticity, Clarity, and Empathy) and a primary focus on how those dimensions can be measured and developed.

Recommendation: read both books.

Too much hand waving, not enough science

This book has some interesting new ideas, spread thinly among pages of personal anecdotes and wishy-washy prose. The part that really killed it for me was where Goleman casually dismisses Richard Dawkins' "Selfish Gene" theory with an explanation "it works in some cases, but here's what I think is _really_ going on..." Way to tackle an argument buddy.

You will understand less after reading this book.

Great story - funny in bits, cared about the characters. I loved the descriptions of Boston, New Hampshire, of course, Maine. Not "throw the book down" scary, but there was enough blood and gore to keep it very interesting.

This was a departure for me, as I usually stick to "chick lit", but I've always enjoyed the occasional King thriller and this one didn't let me down - I loved the focus on what today is thought of as a "regular" part of our lives, but in fact, this book makes you look at cellular technology as being mysterious and it seemed plausible that there could be something scary going on and King found a way to bring the message home "loud and clear".

I have never been a huge King fan, but I grabbed this one for a change. I was very surprised. This book moves along fast and has some great action and suspense. He makes cell phone zombies sound so real! His descriptive ability is still amazing. His vocabulary and characters are spot on. King has not lost his touch.

This was the first book I've ever read of Stephen King and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I felt the character development was done well and each character brought their own unique personality to the mix.

I loved the idea of cell phones being the cause of the outbreak, it was defiantly better than the typical viral cause.

One of the things I didn't like were the weird abilities the zombies acquired at the end. I like the pure random violence of the zombies at the beginning, and even though the idea of an evolving flock of zombies was interesting--I just feel it was a little awkward coming from mindless zombies.

The second thing was the cliff hanger ending, it didn't take away from the story, but it would have been nice to know what the result of that final phone call was.

Verbose but entertaining

Well, this is only about the fourth or fifth King book I've read so I am in no way an expert. But I think I have figured some of his style/trademarks. "Cell" is an entertaining read. I liked the premise, not as hokey as I first thought, the characters were likeable, and it kept me interested throughout.

However, the ending was weak, as others have mentioned and made me hate the book the second I finished reading. Also, not a lot happens the entire novel. I mean, it is almost 500 pages long and I could sum it up every bit of action in a couple of lines. They go here, there, somewhere else, that is it. Is this 500 pages worth of narative? No, but as always, King is very, very wordy and repeats himself over and over. Whatever happens near the beginning you can bet will come up again and again throughtout the novel. It is all very meandering. I don't like that. A story should build and build as it goes and Cell only kinda does that.

I found this was the case in Dreamcatcher and here again in Cell. Get over it, Pixie Dark is finished, I don't care what happened, let's move forward, shall we? Still, I found it fun overall and can't fault him for his poor traits as a writer b/c his good traits outweigh them.

King can really tell a good story. But he does not this time. What could otherwise have been a good zombie apocalypse is spoiled by the author's constant pop culture references. It got so out of hand at one point I threw the book across the room when King had his characters (who were running for their lives at the time, mind you) weigh in on a fight in the media between has-been dj Moby and rap/actor Eminem. This is just one example. And there are hundreds. Every time you are about let go and enjoy the dark spooky narrative, a silly conversation like this popped up. Ruined it.

I have enjoyed the book so far and have found many things I wasn't doing. With that being said, I felt that the chapters were very scattered. It seems like they had a good thought, but it isn't clearly written.

I have read many of John's books and this one doesn't have his usual flow. It seems that his co-author did the majority of the writing and John just added a blurb in at the end of the chapter.

I enjoyed John Maxwell's leadership books better.

This is an awesome audio book. I saw John Maxwell talk about this new book of his on the Joyce Meyer show and was compelled to get a copy for myself. It was awesome. I listened to it twice and then gave it to a friend with instructions to give it back so I could listen to it again. My friend kept listening to it over and over and still hasn't given it back. I bought several of these and gave them as Christmas Presents to my close friends and relatives. During this Christmas season, I ended up making 4 different orders from Amazon for this audio book (orders of 4 copies, then 5 copies and then 3 copies) to use as presents. The price is very little compared to the power contained in this book.

Jayne Castle excels at writing crisp, believable dialog and this book was a delight to read. At times I found myself laughing out loud or repeating aloud a particularly humorous line. Sierra was a strong, stubborn woman who could (usually) be reasoned with and I thought John Fontana was very sexy -- sure he was a "take charge" kind of guy but Sierra did a good job of standing up for herself and not letting him run roughshod over her. They were a good match and I enjoyed watching them each come to realize that as they solved the mystery together.

My favorite character in this story was the Dust Bunny, Elvis. I liked that he was prominent throughout and was fully fleshed (fuzzed?) out. Some of the best and funniest segments of the book featured or co-starred Elvis. He was so very cute and quite protective of Sierra. Adorable chemistry between Sierra & Elvis!

I thoroughly enjoyed this light fun read and look forward to visiting Harmony again soon.

This is Jayne's most recent story of the world on Harmony with it's great characters, Ghost Hunter Guilds, and animal companion dust bunnies. This is John Fontana and Sierra McIntyre's story of meet, instant attraction, work together to find out who is dealing the new drug "ghost juice" and what is happening to the disappearing retired ghost hunters. Of course, good triumphs over evil. Not going to spoil the plot for you. This particular bunny "Elvis," was adorable. I loved the way Jayne gave him such personality and he wore a sparkling cape, sun glasses, had a miniature dressing room and floating around in a box attached to balloons. The "King" was alive as a dust bunny. The whole story was great. Also liked that Sierra was not the normal denizen psychic powered resident of Harmony using amber, but was a non-Harmony related talent inherited from relatives of the Arcane Society that migrated to Harmony...thus tying in her Victorian and Modern Arcane Society books in with this series. Great job and an enjoyable read.

In Dark Light we found out that Sierra's entire family are still members of the Arcane Society. Her ancestors were members when they came thru the curtain. Sierra's psychic gifts have nothing to do with alien psy energy. This reader wonders what Jayne has in store for us in the future!!!

I was excited to hear about a new Ghost Hunter book. The first two were really good and the others were good. This one was just so much fluff.

The two main characters were instantly attracted to one another and married later in the day on the thinnest of premises. What is it with having your pet with you all the time. It is like someone carrying around a Poodle - an affectation. Elvis? Costumes? This is the only developed charcter in the whole book. The mystery wasn't one and easily resolved. The love scenes rote.

I was disappointed in the book. Perhaps Ms. Krentz needs to stop writing for a while and recharge her creative juices.

Earth has colonized the world of Harmony but they were not the final sentient species to do so. A mysterious alien race built underground catacombs filled with psi energy that over time manifested among the earthy colonists with each generation growing is psi skill. The mysterious aliens are gone leaving only their infrastructure.

Tabloid reporter Sierra McIntyre is interviewing new Ghost Hunter Guild Chief John Fontana, who can manipulate psi energy so that it doesn't hurt anyone. Sierra is worried about former and homeless Guild member addicted to ghost juice and believes Fontana should tale care of the problem. She is also concerned that former impoverished hunters have disappeared without a trace and demands John investigate. Less than an hour after they meet, John proposes a marriage of convenience so they can combine their resources to investigate the issues that he feels generate from within the guild and to protect Sierra who is in danger from those shadows behind the disappearances. On their first night as husband and wife, someone using an alien artifact breaks into John's property with nasty intent. They escape into the catacombs for now, but traps and danger await them on every turn as the conspirators need to kill Mr. and Ms. Fontana to avoid discovery and disclosure.

It is always great to visit Harmony where Jayne Castle escorts readers through great romance and compelling mystery in an alien combo sci-fi fantasy world. The latest thriller is exciting and fast-paced as the alien objects are used by avaricious people to gain more power. The pairing of Sierra and John enhances their inquiry into what is going on inside the Guild as fans of the saga will relish this strong paranormal romantic whodunit.

"I DID STAND-UP COMEDY for eighteen years. Ten of those years were spent learning, four years were spent refining, and four were spend in wild success." So begins Steve Martin's biography of himself as he explains it because he feels as if he is writing about someone else 30 to 40 years removed from the time and place. Although I was a fan of Steve Martin's comedy and movies mainly via SNL and his early movies I never appreciated the dedication, hard work, and intellectual underpinnings that guided his rise to superstardom. He covers the early dysfunctional family experience that seems to come with later greatness in enough detail to make the ending very touching where there is reconciliation. Throughout the book you get a flavor for the times (sixties/seventies) from an observer/participant perspective rather than partisan/ideologue. Finally I enjoyed reading it because Steve Martin is a complex and interesting character who can be completely zany and stupid but also recite poetry, discuss art, and find the philosophical underpinnings in making a fool of yourself in front of thousands.

From a serious Steve Martin fan. I loved it. I really, really loved it.

I became a Steve Martin fan in college when my roomates and I saw him on Johnny Carson trying to make people laugh by reading names out of a phone book (the way great actors can supposedly make people cry by doing the same thing). Of course, no one was laughing so he resorted to his standard balloon hat, bunny ears, arrow through the head and Groucho Marx glasses. It was so bizarre and crazy, we were in stitches. Of course, we were also pharmaceutically challenged at the time so that helped.

When reading this book, it also helps if you lived through the 60s and 70s. Steve makes many references to those times as he was growing up and his comedy career morphed. If you also grew up during those times, you can relate to so much more of what he's talking about. But regardless, it's really quite entertaining as he pulls you through the 60s and his time as a writer on the Smothers Brothers show and his early attempts at comedy in the 70s.

If you followed Steve's stand-up career, I think you will really like this book. You really get to know the man and his struggles with his comedy career, his family and his love life. This is the first book of his that I've read and I never realized what a good writer he is. I breezed through the book as he has a way of painting a picture and and scene in a very visual way. So many times through the book, I read a sentence and stopped and thought, "You know, that's true. It really is". A few of my favorites were "Thankfully, perseverance is a great substitute for talent", and "Despite a lack of natural ability, I did have the one element necessary to all early creativity: naivete, that fabulous quality that keeps you from knowing just how unsuited you are for what you are about to do".

Every young performer should read this book, whether you're a Steve Martin fan or not. It is inspiring as well as entertaining. If you were born after the Steve Martin phenomenon of the 70s, go to YouTube.com and find some old Steve Martin stand-up clips. You will not regret it.

I remember watching Steve Martin's seemingly meteoric rise from Tonight Show guest, to Saturday Night Live stalwart, to concert hall blockbuster. He made me laugh. He helped take the edge off the 70's. I remember leaving one of his Nassau Coliseum shows thinking that all in the world was good and it's ok to be goofy - for a little while anyway. It was from that melancholy recollection I read through this book.

While Martin's stand up humor was edgy, innovative, and visual, Born Standing Up is laced with a dry humor that sometimes brings chuckles one or two lines afterward. We can see that as is true for most seemingly overnight success stories there are years of hard work and sacrifice behind the sensation. Though there is only a small window into Steve's creative genius, you can see how his young life contributed to the product he presented on stage. Martin's stand up act was filled with silliness, idiocy, and just plain tomfoolery. In Born Standing Up we see the crafting of that act took an intellectual approach and technical dissection of how comedy works. Laced with stories of his family life, upstart employment, inspirations, encounters and collaborations with familiar performers from the era, and the eventual eruption of his show, Born Standing Up leads down a road of opportunities realized and acted upon.

Tracking the career of Steve Martin can be confusing. The performances of the stand up era are dramatically different from the ones we see in movies today. So different that when I played some of "Let's Get Small" for my kids (who are very familiar with the Cheaper by the Dozen dad) they had a hard time believing it is the same person. Born Standing Up reveals an underlying personality that is constant throughout Martin's career.

I believe this is a 5 star book for anyone who fondly remembers Martin's stand-up. Thanks Steve for making the world a little less serious!

Steve Martin is simply the best and is now copied by all other stand up comics. Great belly laughs.

Martin's book is a terrific look at what it took to succeed in comedy during the 60s and 70s. For someone who, as a teenager, lived for Martin's appearances on The Tonight Show or Saturday Night Live, I was able to laugh all over again at the memories of his gags, silliness, and craziness. They were events for us 15-year-olds, gathering around the TV and then carrying our favorite bits forward to reenact in the classroom. Martin is quite honest about his complicated relationship with his father and other family members, but noticeably -- but inconsistently -- discreet when it comes to certain marital or romantic relationships. At one point, he references a divorce he was going through when we, the readers, hadn't yet been apprised that he had married. Here we thought he was still the lonely guy. In any event, overall, this is a wonderful chronicle of a hard-working comedian, as well as how difficult it is to make it within that business. I found this book to be as enjoyable as Harpo Marx's "Harpo Speaks," which also examines a life well lived within a cut-throat industry.

This is most definitely a 5 Star book & also a 5 Kleenex read. The writer is a real human being & definitely a real dog too. His descriptions made it seem like I was right there every step of the way . What a beautiful story and a beautiful tribute to Man and his Dog. Even , what normally would be very dry commentary on the history of dogs, was most interesting to read. He made the technical information very easy to understand and has the talent to make it part of the story. I learned so much about dogs and even more about humans . What a wonderful read. Don't miss it even if you aren't a dog lover. It touched my heart and my emotions like no other non-fiction book every has .

I just read this book last week, and I couldn't put it down. Just as good as Amazing Gracie and Marley and Me. Well written and very insightful. Entertaining stories and interesting scientific research on the development of dogs from wolves. I picked up some good information on handling my own dogs. I'll be reading this again.

Great book about the observations and insight of a dogs life. They do live for the moment but more to with unconditional love & a master of a companion. When you love your dog there are no boundary between you and the dog but a good partnership right to the end. You begin to see humans have more rules & limits than dogs, you'll discover dogs don't care how they look or care what day it is. More than that everyday is a good day its the moment of how it starts off, after that its a day, thats how they enjoy their lives, knowing they have a master or buddy around.

It has been a week since I have finished this book and I can't stop thinking about it. I don't live in the country or live off the land like the author but I could still relate to everything. I love the fact that he made his own assumptions and opinions and never pushed it on the reader.

For those of the readers who were disgusted by the owners behavior with Merle, I laugh. He let this dog be exactly who he was. He gave him direction and corrected his behavior when he felt absolutely necessary. Let's face it, dogs weren't meant to be couped up all day in a house or apartment. I would definitly give my dog the opportunity to roam free if I could.

His love of his dog made me feel that the feelings I have or had for dogs weren't silly. He believed dogs had true emotions and feeling no matter what has been said. A truly magical book that took me on a journey that I will never forget.

If you are a dog lover than this is a must!
