acronym for "People Escaping...." just didn't have the
right connotation) I had learned not only about generational violence and why people become abusive, disrespectful or violent,
but also how to "hear" my own feelings, and warning signals, speak up for them, and ask clearly for what I wanted. This alone was a tremendous win. However, I noticed in practice that when I did so, it was the unusual person who would automatically respond in kind and tell me what they were feeling or wanted. Gradually I felt awkward and unsatisfied, but couldn't really identify what was missing.
Non-Violent Communication offers what was missing: connection and communion. Even though formerly considering myself intuitive, learning to listen to others empathically, below differing opinions, facts and values to the heart of the person, their human needs, was extremely challenging, even frightening - doubtless due to former abuse - but when the breakthrough came, it was extraordinary!! My parents argued very disrespectfully and loudly to solve differences or problems; I overcompensated by appearing to not have any, and then avoiding the situation or person. You can understand how alienating this is, how disconnecting and de-humanizing. I'm very glad to have made the effort to learn this with one or two willing and safe friends, as now it is easier to apply in more difficult situations, for instance, with my family.
This CD set is a wonderful introduction and overview, filled with somefunny, some amazing anecdotes. Dr. Rosenberg has a very soothing voice, a dry sense of humour, and surprisingly, rather pleasing little songs. (At first I thought "Oh, no; this is going to be hokey - but it wasn't. Now in odd moments, I find myself singing "See Me Beautiful"like the school kids!)
Disc One is an introduction to NVC, how discovering why some people use violence and abuse to gain their way, and why others
retain their humanity and consideration was Dr. Rosenberg's deep
purpose in life. He goes on to show real life basics and how to apply NVC personally.
On disc two, NVC is shown in international, social and justice
situations. In one instance of a child molester, my mouth hung opened and I stood stock still for a few minutes listening to how Dr. Rosenberg helped the prisoner discover how terrorizing
children had filled a profound and deeply hidden need for him. The next step is actually a lot easier, which is to gently assist him to getting his needs met and those of the community
in less costly ways. Before getting the facts about who ends up in prison and who is statistically executed, my opinion was that there are certain violent crimes- murder, rape and child molestation - that did deserve the death penalty. It's pretty easy to get very angry about the crime and not see the criminal
as a human being, or coversely go the other way and feel terribly sorry for them, put them in prison, and walk away. But he, Dr. Rosenberg was there, and did do this with this guy, and it did work. It's pretty staggering, and pretty profound, if we
could eventually change our justice system from punitive to
restorative. To me, it's even more profound, more direct, and
more applicable (though maybe no easier) than forgiving one's
enemies, and turning the other cheek.
Well, see for yourself! I'll bet something on this CD will affect everyone who listens to it in a profound way. Highly recommended as a first step. If you like it, then you can get
the book, and start practicing with a good friend!

Many years ago I read "Don't Shoot the Dog!" with an
eye towards training humans using rewards instead of
punishment. Positive reinforcement sounded good, but
something about it made me suspect it wouldn't work for
people. "Speaking Peace" gave me the answer: People
don't like to be manipulated; rewards and punishments
are both methods of manipulation, so people eventually
rebel.

Overall, though, still a good guided meditation.. but in retrospect I much prefer an old Bob Monroe tape I have (Moment of Revelation from the Mind Food series) which is very similar in technique; or for guided point-by-point relaxation, a Yoga Nidra CD I've reviewed here.

Superficial HumbugReview Date: 2008-08-11
1) Be original: It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol did it better. Andy Anderson is no Frank Capa or Charles Dickens.
2) Make characters that are real, not cardboard.
3) Get your facts straight. Christopher Columbus (Colombo) was an Italian who lived in Portugal and in Spain and probably did speak all three languages, but why would he speak Portuguese to an American on a Spanish ship? And why would Columbus claim to have special insight about the world being round when it was a pretty commonly accepted by the Renaissance? Fact checking is so easy with lots of good sites online.
4) Don't underestimate your audience.
5) Pick a genre, any genre. It is not good science fiction when there are too many logical fallacies. For example, the hero is wearing jeans into which he manages to stuff a scroll from Solomon, a leather pouch, various notes and pieces of paper. Fantasy? Then let's magically shrink these items. Inspirational? Not particularly, especially not this writing style.
6) Life is unpredictible. The ending of any book should not be this predictible.
7) Don't be preachy. The Ten Commandments pretty much covered the whole thing already, succinctly, without being preachy. Find a new franchise.

How to absorb a new attitude and enjoy lifeReview Date: 2008-03-19
Mr. Andrews has a way of telling stories--parables, that are meaningful to anybody and enjoyable to read. His writing is engaging. I found I could not put his book down when i read the print copy.
The principles are akin to positive thinking, for which I am a firm believer. Once I change my daily attitude towards something, whether it be a person or a task at hand, the situation becomes clearer, rights itself and things go the way I need for them to go. And I have less stress. But accomplishing "positive thinking" is of course not easy or else we'd all be doing it. Here, Andy Andrews sets down rules that frame positive thinking into actions and deeds as well as setting the table around your life. These concrete seven statements really get the job done. When I read the seven decisions, I realized that when I had adopted some huge changes in my life, these were indeed the rules I had set down for myself--only Andy Andrews wrote them with such clarity and beauty that it resonated hugely with me.
The seven decisions are:
The Responsible Decision: The buck stops here. I accept responsibility for my past. I am responsible for my success. I will not let my history control my destiny.
The Guided Decision: I will seek wisdom.
The Active Decision: I am a person of action.
The Certain Decision: I have a decided heart. Criticism, condemnation, and complaint have no power over me.
The Joyful Decision: Today I will choose to be happy.
The Compassionate Decision: I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit.
The Persistent Decision: I will persist without exception.
So, while reading the book for me was really fun, I like the audio version, because I can put it in the car and listen to it and remind myself from time to time about how to keep my attitude positive and useful to me. Andy Andrews is a great motivational speaker and writer, and having his words to listen to whenever you want is a great companion to this book. If you are looking for techniques to master his philosophy of positive thinking and action, I suggest Mastering the Seven Decisions That Determine Personal Success: An Owner's Manual to the New York Times Bestseller, The Traveler's Gift which is a companion piece and helps you change your behavior to achieve this mindset.
I'm telling you, if you sincerely adopt these principles, your life will be better than you ever could imagine it.

On Becoming Baby WiseReview Date: 2008-03-03

My clear recollection of my first son compared to neighbors' kids born around the same time was that he was calmer, collected, and infinitely more happy and well-adjusted.
If the reader is interested to further investigate the Ezzo's please see their site at gfi.org. The below is a quick blurb from a link at their site:
"Gary Ezzo holds a Master of Arts degree from Biola University, Talbot Theological Seminary and School of Theology and serves as the Executive Director of Growing Families International. Anne Marie Ezzo is a registered nurse, has co-authored On Becoming Birthwise, and Birth by Design, oversees the GEMS (Contact Mom) ministry and ministers alongside her husband. The Ezzo's have 2 married daughters, eight grandchildren."
I suspect that TulipGirl, one of the "reviewers" has her own ax to grind and has not revealed her own preferences, beliefs, associations, or whether on not she has had children of her own.
As for myself, I am a Christian, a father, an accounting manager, and am on the verge of completing my fourth degree. I want the best for my kids and that means I want what works. This stuff definitely works. Please feel free to contact me via this site if you would like.
Thanks,

Second, for some babies, the ideas in BW seem to "work." Their inate rhythm is in sync with the schedules promoted by Gary Ezzo. Their belly size can accomodate larger feedings less frequently. They "fit" with the sleep schedule okay. Perhaps some little ones fall into this category. The thing is, there are many babies who do NOT "fit" into the BW type of schedule, and a new mom just doesn't know whether her baby will or not. When people recommend Babywise, how often do you hear the caveat, "Well, some mothers don't make enough milk using this program and some babies end up with delayed growth or sleep disorders or attachment issues--so be careful, and I hope your baby "fits" into it well!"
And finally, c'mon be honest, have you EVER met someone who thought they didn't have common sense? Have you ever met a new mom who would say "oh, I can't be flexible or use common sense, so I better stay away from Babywise!" While each parent is fully responsible for her own actions and her own child, I put the onus of providing sound, researched, medically and developmentally accurate information on the author. And in this area, Gary Ezzo fails to measure up.
Just for clarity. . . I am not criticizing any mother who has used Babywise or discounting your love or common sense. I am criticizing an author and a method with a track record of poor results, even when used by loving, common-sensical parents.

Wimpiness trumps it allReview Date: 2008-09-27
What got my attention was the discussion of race. He asks: "When did Republicans lose their nerve on race? And why?" According to Shelby Steele: "White guilt does not depend on the goodwill or geniune decency of people. It depends upon their fear of stigmatization, their fear of being called racist." But white guilt doesn't just apply to conservatives nor Republicans, nor does fear as the following quote shows: "There is no subject that journalists fear more than race in America. None." And, "The problem is that reporters tend to be liberal and liberals don't really want to ask "uncomfortable" questions about race, because the entire subject of race makes them uncomfortable. Unless of course it is framed in the usual safe, familiar terms."
Wimpiness on the subject of race is bipartisan. But you have to look hard in this book to see that. It could have been made clearer. Making it seem political just confuses the matter.
Crazies to the left, and what about the Right?Review Date: 2008-09-25
I can agree with him that the is lots of liberal bias in the media, and that many of them have turned crazy. but anyone who says he has been a liberal his entire life, then slowly went to the right, goes on to say that Fox news is the only network that does not have a bias, or that Ann Coulter makes sense, or that George Bush hasn't made a mess of things, is clearly Bias! I find it hard to believe this man has spent his career in news!
In the end, I could not put this book down for some stupid reason, and at some spots in this book, he makes decent points... buy it at your own risk.

You will be absorbed into the storyReview Date: 2006-09-23
You can slow down and pick apart many underlying themes and may of the phrases that now challenge Bible sayings in today's sound bites. But the real fun is in just reading the story and you will find that it is not as foreign as you may have thought.
A quick synopsis is that Old Hamlet conquered Old Fortinbras seizing his land. Now that Old Hamlet is dead, Young Fortinbras wants his land back and is willing to take it by force. Meanwhile back in Dänemark Young Hamlet who is excessively grieving for the loss of his father, gets a now insight from his fathers ghost. Looks like he was a victim of a "murder most foul"; it looks like his mother and uncle were in cahoots on the murder.
The story is about what each person felt and acted or did not act upon the situation.
You will find many movies and perverted imitations of the story but nothing will replace the original that was intended to be watched but reads well.
You may like different audio and audio dramatizations.
