Another wonderful Lt. Dallas book.

I have read this entire series and each book seems to get better. This one is my favorite by far. I love Eve's snappy comments and banter with Peabody and, of course, with Roarke but I feel that the thing I enjoyed most is how Eve and Roarke's relationship seems to deepen with each book. They have been married for awhile and you can feel how comfortable they are with one another, how they anticipate one another and how much they love one another. This warmth is a wonderful backdrop to what is always an ugly and brutal murder. This book also introduced the little boy, Tiko and I wonder if the author plans to bring him back in other books. The introduction of his character is significant as both Dallas and Roarke were neglected and abused children. Tiko, on the other hand, is fortunate enough to have a loving grandmother who is raising him. This may prove significant for Dallas and Roarke while they still refer to and work through their childhood traumas.

More strong story-telling by Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb

It looks like the most ordinary of crimes--a wealthy businessman is found dead in his bed, a rope around his neck and sexual aids both point to a possible sexual escapade going wrong. When his wife, safely alibied a thousand miles away, indicates that the dead man, Thomas Anders, was into kinky sex, the case seems open and shut. Except there are too many flaws for police Inspector Eve Dallas. Eve suspects the dead man's beautiful but cold wife, Ava--who stands to gain richly from her husband's death. Still, there's no doubt she was a thousand miles away, no bank withdrawals indicate the possibility of a murder for hire, and Ava's only known outside lover is a Licensed Companion who's personally known to Eve--no way would he have killed for her.

Eve continues to push on the case, looking for the flaw she knows must exist. The murder seemed well-planned, but the flaws indicated that the killer's nerve may have failed. Who could Ava have persuaded to do the deed? With the help of her billionaire-husband, Roark, Eve diggs deeper into Ava's activities. Could she have been responsible for her father-in-law's death as well? Still, without evidence, all she has is suspicion. Eve swears Ava won't get away with her crime, but even in 2060, evidence is needed to convict.

Author J. D. Robb (Nora Roberts) delivers another clever and well-written futuristic mystery. We didn't get the real emotional depth in some of the other In Death novels, but clever Eve, perky Sgt. Peabody, brilliant (and rich) Roark, and the rest of the characters in Eve's police world come together to follow distant connections, linking together possible crimes and possible connections that Ava had believed could never be found. STRANGERS IN DEATH is an enjoyable read--one I ended up consuming in a single sitting.

Awful.

I'm a huge fan of crime mysteries, so when I saw this book at the store I thought, best selling author, it should be good! I can finish a 400 page book in a few hours. I've had this book over a week and cannot get myself to finish it. The characters are cliche and unrealistic. The main character has had a hunch about who's responsible for a murder from way too early in the book, which is making the filler very boring. The author also seems to assume that female readers will want to read petty side stories and will enjoy hearing about the main character's gorgeous husband and huge mansion and their fabulous life together. For someone who wants to read a real crime novel, buy a Michael Connelly book. Maybe Nora Roberts has better work out, but I know I'm not going to bother with any of her writing again.

Just... ok.

I've read all of the In Death series and most of Nora Roberts' other novels. While I enjoy them all and find them all to be a step above most other authors in the genre, this one just kind of... annoyed me.

I've enjoyed Eve and Roarke and the murder mysteries. As a female in law enforcement, I enjoy seeing a lead character that is a strong female in the profession. However, I really found Eve's behavior in this book to be really offensive. I do not enjoy how Roberts seems to portray beat cops/patrol officers as morons and fat slobs. Eve seems to take pleasure in treating the beat cops like crap, which I really disliked.

As far as the story itself, it was entertaining and worth the cost of the book. It wasn't my favorite, but I did like a break from the "killer wants Eve as his ultimate trophy, so Eve sets herself up as bait and takes him down with a karate chop of doom!" plotline that Roberts seems so fond of with these books.

It wasn't her best effort, but it was still a decent read.

Another winner for J.D.Robb

This was a fascinating book more so because I am a deafened adult. I had my memories when I lost all hearing in 1977. Experiences I've had since seem weird to me because I remember. Now I understand why. This is a very informative book from both the music lover and indifferent listener points of view.

A different perspective

Review Date: 2008-08-18
In the first chapter, he made some statements about music that I know to be wrong, so I was tempted to quit, but I thought that perhaps he may still have something interesting to say--I think of the difference between a "satellite view" map and a "street view" map. He has had many interesting things to say, and I am even suspicious that his "errors" at the beginning were an intentional simplification. Even though written for the "layman," it's still pretty heavy reading--and much more focused on the brain's processes than on how music works.
A bit heavy on name-dropping (he started out as a producer), and more "don't know what's happening here" than I hoped for (but I appreciate the honesty). Interesting--but perhaps specialized: it could easily be a different book than you're expecting.

One of the best books you can find on the science of music!

This book was found, as many of my great finds, on the shelves of a used-book store. The book has traveled around in my car with me as I go from school to my job as a voice teacher. It has been loaned out to music professors, and is now very well worn.

I strongly recommend this book for musicians and music lovers alike. It is beautifully written in a way that nearly anyone can understand, with common examples of music from classical to popular music styles.

An excellent introduction into the technical side of how the brain processes music.

One can't expect a thorough look into the interplay of phychology, mind-body mechanics, and music in a shory popular book. That being said, this was an entertaining romp through the field.

The first seventy or so pages was essentially an introduction to music theory and how the mind can proces music as, well, music. For those with a music background it will be tedious and won't tell you much that you don't already know, but for someone who has only touched on it it will be like drinking from a firehose with all the information in the pages.

The rest of the book deals more directly with why certain music is liked, how it most likely evolfved, and the practical utility of music in society and individual survival. If you're ever wondering why there are still oldies stations around, it's because of all the boomers who have an emotional attachment to music of their youth, the time when music tastes are most aggressively defined.

One annoyance was the infantile critique of mind-body interplay, where he ascribes to the opinion of Dennitt that the brain creates the mind. There's not enough room in the review to state why that is incorrect, but it shouldn't have even delved on this weighty topic. Overall though, there wasn't much blanket overgeneralization that plagues many popular science books, though the meanderings of the authors was at times tiring.

Overall, pretty good, and a quick read for someone interested in the topic.

I bought Glickman's book and CD with the intent to read about the cleanse when I had downtime between appointments, etc. And, I'd listen to the cd during my commute to work, etc. I would not recommend the book. (See my review about the book.). I definitely would not recommend the CD either because it is poorly organized in its presentation of the program. Glickman seems to be in conversation with some guy who sounds like a paid DJ. The information was also repetitive in nature such that I got the impression that Glickman was using up "air time". However, I give Glickman his "props" for being creative enough to dawn a CD about the cleanse.

Having attempted the Master Cleanse years ago with disappointing results, I was skeptical when a friend recommended that I try again with the aid of Peter Glickman's CD. Well, I thought, I'm another fifty pounds heavier than before with about half the energy I had then. And my doctor is threatening to put me on blood pressure meds if I don't lose weight. What did I have to lose? I'm so glad I took the advice and ordered this excellent CD. In just an hour or so of easy listening, I realized that I had misinterpreted some critical instructions in the book, virtually guaranteeing my aforementioned failure. I now begin again with renewed optimism. Thank you, Mr. Glickman.

I am so thankful now that I have the tools to become a healthier person. When I first heard about the cleanse, I had to go buy the CD right away. Peter does a great job of telling you exactly how to follow the cleanse to get the best results, along with things to expect from your body during the cleanse, which is so helpful on your first time. I love the CD because I can take it in the car and share it with others. A wonderful tool for improved health and well-being.

I am so excited about this! I heard about the MC when I was 7 months pregnant with my youngest. Now that he is almost 1 and I am almost done nursing I am so excited to do this! I have a count down calendar and everything. My friends who have done this rave about it and I can't wait to do it myself. I've done so much research and talked to so many people that I know this is what I need to do to get back on track and to clean my body of all wastes and toxins that seem to slowly be slowing me down.

Another Effective Pimsleur Course

This course is a direct continuation of the first two Pimsleur Spanish courses, and has the usual helpful repetition, variation, and gradual increase in vocabulary and grammar that make the Pimsleur system so effective. The system is almost entirely auditory, so it is advisable to supplement this course with some reading and writing exercises, if you want to learn to read newspapers or signs, or even to write simple letters. (I was stunned to recently discover that "which" is spelled "cual", not "qual" in Spanish, as I had been visualizing through the first two courses.) But this approach is an excellent way to develop confident fluency in Spanish conversation.

Limited experience with the much touted FSI material has not impressed me as much as some posters profess to be. My troubles with FSI, however, are beyond the scope of a post on Pimselur.

Most critiques of Pimsleur concern the limited range of material,bBut Pimsleur is, I think, the best METHOD of teaching language: contextual REPITITON. This is the child's way of learning language indeed.

Repitition (meaningful repitition) insures RETENTION. Pimsleur is very strong in this area, but when it comes to range and depth, PImsleur is sketchy, and needs some very knowledgeable teachers to revamp the content, and deepen it. Pimsleur relies too little on written reinforcement, which, to the literate person, is a powerful teacher along with the audio.

What would be an ideal method for me is to "Pimsleurize" the material in the Practice Makes Perfect series. This would include the PMP verb book, prepositions, and the subjunctive. To be used thus, much of the material in the PMP series should be pared, and then audio-ized a la Pimselur; it would not be useful learning too many verbs, as found in the PMP series, as opposed to mastering, really nailing down, a few. This "product" would take alotta work, would require big bucks backing, but the result would be a fusion of what I have found the best methods: PMP workshops for writing and learning "rules"--but which does not foster high quality retention, and the Pimselur audio method, which is shallow in content and range, but fosters deep retention ...

Here's a very honest review. I've been through all 4 levels of the Pimsleur Spanish Language programs (I, II, III, Plus). It took me about 18 months to get through it all with my commute to work. I went through each lesson multiple times, and I can now go back through the CD's and get probably 95% of it correct. It was an enjoyable introduction to the language, and an efficient use of my time (what else am I going to do in my car?). However, my initial hope was that I'd be able to understand Spanish conversations, radio, and TV. And I must tell you I get maybe 10% of it. Was recently in Dallas where there's lots of Spanish spoken, and I don't pick up much. The Mexican guys that painted my house...couldn't understand a word they were saying. I'm not giving up, from here I'll try more audio courses, classes, whatever is available. But if you're like me and read these reviews in the outset, don't be fooled, it's not all they make it out to be. It's ironic, but after going through their "advanced" courses, I'm still at a very beginner level. I wonder if some of these reviews are written by the publisher. And by the way, I found all 4 courses completamente gratis at my local library. Busca ahi primero.

PIMSLEUR DEVELOPS A SPEECH CENTER
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-23
No where in the literature that Pismleur puts out does it claim to be the "end all" Spanish program. I mean, really! It would impossible to put everything you need to know in three short courses. What it claims to do, it does. It gets you to a certain level of SPOKEN FLUENCY and no more and no less. When I did the research for my book, "YOU CAN LEARN SPANISH or Any Language No Matter Your Age or Disposition," what I found was that Americans particularly have the most bizzare idea of what it takes to develop spoken fluency in a second language. The course, "FSI Programmatic Spanish", is one that should be done after the highest level of spoken fluency is achieved. What "FSI Programmatic Spanish" does is address material to the short and long term memory and not to that portion of the brain that develops a "speech center". If you want to know what a "speech center" in your brain is, just note how your six or seven year old child can communicate in his native language BEFORE ever learning what a part of speech is. When I went through the " FSI Programmatic Spanish" course so I could review it for my book, I thought it was dreadfully boring, mind numbing, and did not at all address the development of a Speech Center...Pimsleur, however does. Pimsleur is not "A" method for second language acquisition...it is "THE" method for beginning spoken fluency. One comes before the other. In fact, in my book, avaialable here on Amazon.com, I mention Pimsleur as part of the course of study for developing spoken fluency.

I have read many books about the Law of Attraction, and thought I was doing everything exactly as suggested to manifest my life at the summit. Yet, the results were not what I was visualizing. The attractorfactor helped me get clear on what I was and wasn't doing. What I love about this book is Joe shares real feelings and real struggles that I could relate to, and it helped me find feelings I have been surpressing. Once found, they have been easy to release. Getting me closer and closer to inner peace, freedom and abundance. Thank you Joe, for putting it all out there. This is a book I will read again...and soon. Note to Joe: You don't need all of the testimonials at the beginning, We bought the book, let us start reading it sooner.

5 not so easy steps

Review Date: 2008-08-08
I was expecting, like the title implies, that the 5 steps would be 'easy'. The title is a little misleading even for the author, who himself, despite all his 'wisdom' seems to constantly be faced with 'emotional blocks' preventing him from manifesting his desires... that is until he clears them. How? He heads off to healers... has 'spirits' work on him... and hires Hindu priests to perform 'yagyas' for him, etc. Hardly simple or feasible for many of us!

If that doesn't turn you off enough, there are the constant 'plugs' he gives all his famous friends throughout the book.

There are a number of stories in the book, many of which could have been left out as they provided no useable information. And since when did 'Thy Will Be Done' mean 'gimme this or better'???

I did manage, however, to find a couple of useful tidbits of information I had not run across before, which explains my 2-star rating.

This is truly an amazingly well written book. Another Law of Attraction book you may initially think, but we are here to inform you that it is far from that. This book actually feels more like a personal coaching session. Joe Vitale's energy radiates so strongly from this book that it actually feels like he is in your living room having a personal conversation with you. His explanation of the Law of Attraction principles is so concise that it penetrates your core. You will get it!

Joe Vitale offers a five-step process to get you to your desired destination that is not the overly repeated route of

ASK-->BELIEVE-->RECEIVE

Instead, he takes you on the scenic route which is so much more enjoyable:

Step 1: The Springboard
Step 2: Dare Something Worthy
Step 3: The Missing Secret
Step 4: Nevillize Your Goal
Step 5: The Ultimate Secret

We Highly Recommend That You Take This Journey! Joe Vitale will definitely get you to where you want to go!

This is a live reading by Stephen King in front of an audience in Great Britain (performed at about the time the author's novel "Bag of Bones" was published), and hearing it is an enjoyable experience. Though I wouldn't want Mr. King to perform audiobooks of any length (he's no Frank Muller or George Guidall when it comes to vocal characterizations), he capably and engagingly does well for the hour or so he's in front of the Brits, who are friendly and supportive.

The story being read aloud is most successful when it humorously talks about the little things one does and doesn't do in a marriage to assure daily peace, and how, if a couple has housepets, how those little critters can figure into the marriage mix. There's also an effective, bittersweet quality to the story when the marriage in question goes bad, and- I'm sure this won't surprise you- some unsettling horrific material that creeps its way into the story's closing minutes.

All in all, this is a good little story with the added value of a "you are there" feel of attending a live event. The whole thing is only about an hour, however, so you might want to pick this up somewhere at a discount, perhaps through Amazon's network of used book stores. Or, if you just want the story and not necessarily the live performance, I'm sure "LT's Theory of Pets" has since been included in one of Stephen King's frequently-published collections of short stories.

Ever wonder about how pets start to look and act like their owners? Stephen King wondered the same thing, and it led to LT'S THEORY OF PETS....

The death of LT and Lulubelle's marriage is one that everyone loves to hear, no matter how many times LT tells it. From the arrival of the dog, Frank, and the cat, Lucy, their marriage was on a downward spiral. Frank, intended for LT, bonds with Lulubelle, while Lucy, bought for Lulubelle, bonds with LT. All of this leads to LT'S THEORY OF PETS... and to the strange disappearance of Lulubelle.

LT'S THEORY OF PETS is narrated by Stephen King and is a recording of a reading before a live audience. The introduction before the story commences adds a nice touch as it is always fascinating to see what is inside the mind of an author, particularly one who writes like Stephen King!

Like any story by Stephen King, LT'S THEORY OF PETS has moments of dark humor. In fact, there are moments that left me laughing out loud. But fans of this master of horror know that there are bound to be twists and turns, some that will take the listener to the dark places that reside in the hearts of man. The ending will leave some listeners unsatisfied, as there are just as many questions as there are answers. The truth is up to the reader to decide....

LT'S THEORY OF PETS is worthwhile if only to hear it read by Stephen King. The print version of this story is in the anthology, EVERYTHING'S EVENTUAL, and where I first read it. The audio version actually enhances the plot as the nuances of the story are easily discernible to the listener. Once again, Stephen King delivers a fascinating tale!

Suffice it to say, it was the scariest drive home I've ever taken and I spent half of it looking over my shoulder into the back seat of my car. I don't drive late at night anymore and I haven't been to that friend's house at night since I read Lt's Theory of Pets. It was a great book and a terrific scare! This is an unabridged audio version of a short story by Stephen King, available on CD and as audio download. It features Stephen King himself reading the story to a live audience.

This story is also available in print in "Everything's Eventual", a collection of 14 short stories by Stephen King.

The total length of the audio program is 56 minutes, and 5 minutes of this is the introduction, so the story itself is around 50 minutes. The introduction is a bit funny, with Stephen King happily reminding the audience that they are all going to die, and suggesting that they should check the back seats of their cars before getting in, just in case, you know...

The story itself is about LT and Lulubelle, a young couple who have broken up after three years of marriage. There are two pets involved, a dog and a cat, with the dog loving Lulubelle and hating LT, and the cat loving LT and hating Lulubelle. On the surface it looks like the friction between LT and Lulubelle about the pets is the cause of the breakup, but this is presumably only a symptom of deeper problems.

Stephen King has an amazing ability to create characters we can recognize as real people. LT and Lulubelle come across as very real people, and we can laugh at them and identify with them and understand that their marriage is doomed.

The story starts out funny, and then it turns tragic, and then it ends in a somewhat unsatisfying way.

In the story, the narrator (a good friend of LT's) at one point is talking about LT's so-called "theory of pets". He describes the reaction of people to being told this theory, and says, "They would always end up feeling let down. A story that good deserved a better punch line."

That's exactly my feeling after listening to this short story by Stephen King. The story is good but the ending is disappointing.

For hard-core Stephen King fans this audio version is worth having just to hear Stephen King reading his own story to a live audience. For average Stephen King fans it makes more sense to buy "Everything's Eventual" in book form, as it's cheaper and you get 13 additional short stories.

I enjoyed listening to it while I could, but cassette #5 was not recorded correctly, so I couldn't listen to the period of time that this cassette covered.

This book is the weakest book in the In Death series, for a number of reasons. Much like my ex-girlfriend, its just no good. The plot is slow, with the biggest avenu for the investigation being, are you read, PAPER SALES! Thats right, Eve, roarke, Peabody, and the rest, go all over the world to ask people about paper! Then, the killer is a dead giveaway. If the killer was anybody other then who they were, the cover makes no sense. But, it did have a few good moments, such as Eve's new memories, and Peabody making detecive.

Nora Roberts Rocks! Lt. Eve Dallas makes the best protagonist and it's like a ongoing series so there is always a new story!

Great, Fabulous... Wonderful.... not perfect, but still spectacular!

First my knocks on this book. Why not bring in more killings from "the past" such as the Manson murders or John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, etc? It just seems you have so many murders and psychopaths to choose from, there was not really a need to "invent" one. Although, in fairness it speaks to JD ROBB/Nora Roberts' imagination when she was able to conjure such a believable villain.

The opening chapter was absolutely brutal and violent but it was not grotesque. It was very smartly done. It grabs your attention and you are hooked. You either are determined to finish this book after chapter one or you will put it down and probably never pick it back up, but rabid fans know that Nora always delivers powerful blows like this.

Typical to the "JD ROBB" style, Roberts pulls no punches, but attacks the violence with a malevolent class and style that only she can muster. Truly, this is one of the better stories of the series. I was impressed with Portrait... I was absolutely AMAZED by Purity... this one... I don't know. I'm at a loss for words. I can't wait to see what "DETECTIVE" Peabody will do in future books.

I love the way we are really IN These characters lives. They eat, they drink, they party. They have sex, they bleed, they cry, they laugh, they plan for their future, they love and they lose. They live and (at times) they die. This story is true to reality. The characters FEEL real and by now they are a part of a reader's pseudo-family. A dysfunctional and outrageous family, but a family nonetheless.

Reading each book is like a trip home... a family reunion. And I can't wait for the next trip.

I actually bought the Old Testament Hebrew Vocabulary CDs at a book store for full price, should have come to amazon... I am enjoying them and finding that they are extremely helpful. I like that there is a booklet included so that you can distinguish between letters and vowels that may sound alike on the CD. I have found that my knowledge of hebrew words has increased exponentially since starting this program and while I don't quite feel comfortable reading the Hebrew OT, I haven't finished the program yet, I am noticing more and more that I will read my English version and come across words that are likely translations of words that I know.

I believe that these CDs would be a good place to start in your Hebrew education if you want to get into the OT as quickly as possible. I know for me incentives like reading a sentence or passage in Hebrew really keeps me going through some of the most grueling hours of rote memorization. I would suggest for all that are really serious about their study of original texts to start with these CDs and then get a good grammar book to fill in the gaps. Of the five or six Hebrew grammar books that aimless seminary professors have subjected me to 'A Practical Grammar for Classical Hebrew' by Weingreen is by far the best I have found. He does a great job about explaining not only what the proper grammar is but also why it is.

Now for the negatives about this CD. First, I'm not sure if everyone would consider this a negative or not but he uses the classical pronounciation instead of the modern pronounciation of Hebrew. It is easy enough to switch around in your head but I figure if you are going to go through all the trouble of learning a language that is still spoken today why not learn it in such a way that you can use it on that trip to Israel that you've always wanted to take? Secondly, the CD is helpful for initially learning how to pronounce the words but after that it is just about useless. My suggestion is to get some 3x5 cards cut them into fifths and write the words on there. you can take the flashcards anywhere and they will be easier to prove your comprehension to yourself. It is really helpful, however, that he set these words up in manageable lists according to frequency. Also, I don't feel that he gives you enough time on the CD to think about the meaning of the word before tell you or enough time to go over the word after you get the definition before he starts on the next word. I know I could use the pause button but pausing that gets old fast. I think he probably intends you to write the cards. Lastly, learning a language takes real committment. We are talking between 1-3 hours a day for several months, maybe even years. What a person puts into learning a language is what they will reap from it. I have found so far that every word frequency list has several words that I am either already familiar with or can guess and at least one word that gives me a theological insight into a passage or thought process behind the OT. I think these are gifts from God to help continue on what is sometimes a dry task, but even with these there is still a lot of discipline and committment required in learning the language. Don't fall into the trap of believing that you put the CDs in your car stereo and magically learn Hebrew on your way to work.

This review went on longer than I anticipated so to sum up. Good beginning resource to jump start a life long discipline of study and faithfulness. Take the book and make flashcards, use the CDs to correct pronounciation. Well worth the money. God bless.

You can't beat it! This study can only help. If you're well versed in Hebrew you will probably find it lacking although I may find it hard to believe you... As for me! it's just what I needed.

Pennington performs a valuable service to anyone who seeks to learn Hebrew on their own. The vocabulary includes the most common Hebrew words so that the learner will have the maximum benefit of memorization. Each is clearly pronounced enabling the student to recognize similar sounding words, which is important since much Hebrew Scripture relies on word plays and punning. It is a great resource.

These two CD's serve as another helpful addition to Zondervan's ever growing original languages library. Pennington again is the "author" who lends his voice to the reading of the Hebrew words and their definitions. It basically follows the same format as his New Testament Greek Vocabulary.

All Hebrews words occurring 20 times and more are given in their descending order of frequency. Pennington also says the alphabet in the beginning and like the NT counterpart there is a 40 page booklet to accompany the CDs. The glosses (definitions) follow Zondervan's Vocabulary Guide for Biblical Hebrew by Van Pelt and Pratico.

The only disappointment which I have so far is that I learned Hebrew using the modern pronunciation whereas Pennington uses the Classical pronunciation. (...)

Well, I'm a person taht has big struggles getting my vocab down, and finding people to work with me on it the way I need to work - with near endless repetition until the words all finally "stick." The thing that is great about this is that you can not only take it in the car wit hyou, but if you've put it on your computer in MP3 format you can grab a dry-erase board and dry-erase markers and pause after each word, trying to write the words out and thereby learn them much more actively. Also, it is a great tool to put on your iPod and use it while you exercise (of course, quietly in a public place, though personally I prefer long walks). It is helpful, especially if you are in the process of trying (as I am) to survive the required Hebrew courses for seminary. I think it is a very useful product that has all sorts of potential uses.
