This was practically the first book I read to my son, from the time he was one month old. It's got a beautiful rythm, and is the perfect length for a first baby book. The story is very simple: a young bunny says good night to everything in his room, which is great so that a baby can first familiarize himself with his surroundings. I've read that some reviewers didn't like the black and white pictures in between the color ones, but I think the alternation (color, b&w, color, and so forth) fits very nicely and is a good way to keep the attention of a very small baby, as well as the change from looking at the whole bedroom to a particular object on each page, which helps the baby learn about context and to focus. Once my son was older, we had lots of fun looking for the mouse in all of the color pictures.
Frankly, I read the poor reviews and I don't agree with those opinions. One of the complaints was that the story was too simple, but I think that they might not be able to see that a very young baby needs a very simple storyline, a month-old baby couldn't follow a more complex story like "The cat in the hat" for example (which I love, don't get me wrong!!!). I just think that those who reviewed this book poorly can't look through the eyes of a very young baby, or bought it for an older child and of course couldn't understand what all the fuss was about. My son is now 3y.o. and we hardly ever get this book anymore, but I can't wait to be pregnant again to start reading it to another baby...

I started reading Goodnight Moon to my son at 4 months of age and it became his favorite bedtime story. When he reached about 9 months I started pointing out objects to him and naming them for him, like the cat, moon, fireplace, red balloon etc. Before long he'd point them out to me as I read. He's nearly 2 and he still enjoys this book, although he gets to choose each night and he often now chooses another book. I know he still likes it though, and he still will point out things to me. I think this is a great book to get someone as a gift or just to add to your baby/toddlers library.

Im not sure if my daughter just has less of an attention span or wants to look at more interesting things but i found this a highly useless book. The objects in the book were very small, on some pages they were in black and white and some of the things in the room arent very topical or relevant. I tried reading to my daughter from this book. she was happy to bang her hands on the book generally and try to turn the pages but the pictures werent in the least bit interesting to her and the lyrics didnt have much of a soothing effect either. i find it hard to believe that america finds such a third rate book such a classic.

My grandfather bought this book for my 13 month old and my son absolutely loves it. I read it 5-10 times every chance he can get it on my lap. He gets really excited the closer I get to the back page. He loves seeing himself and then freaks out with joy! BUY THIS book... they love the holes in the pages, the colors and the repetition of the story.

My 13 month old loves this book. It actually inspired her fifth word! We were reading the book and as I was about to say "Peek-A... Moo", I heard this tiny "eek-a" from my daughter. I turned the page for Peek-a-Boo, and before I could say anything, she did it again - "eek-a". It's repetitious so I think it taught her to say the word. Now she loves to say "eek-a" before I turn the page. I don't know that you can find "eek-a" in a Webster's, but I'll take it!

We bought this book for my 3y.o. son a couple of days ago and he loves it. Though it is very simple compared to what we usually read (he's a big Seuss fan), the pictures are colorful and very creative, and it's a great introduction to animals and colors. Plus, because of it's simple lines and rhymes, it's easy for him to remember and he likes to "read it" himself... as he is interested in "reading" stories to us this is a great experience (with his favorite Seuss books such as The cat in the Hat this is not so easy). I was a bit doubtful about buying this book because he is used to more complex stories, but I'm happy to say that it was a great buy! :-)

I bought this when my son was only a year. I had it on the shelf for a few years without much use. He picked it up one day, and we read it together when he was 3. He wanted me to read it again. That was all he needed, he started to read it back to me.. and to his brother.. and to anyone who would listen. He even recites it when the book is far away. What an impact it has had. A good buy, but wait until they are a bit older than 1. ;)

We bought this book for our twenty-one month old grandson and he just loves it. You have to read it to him four and five times and more every day. It's the book he gives to you to read to him before he goes to bed. It's a great book because he can learn his colors and see different kinds of animals. I would definitely recommend this book.

as part of the bedtime routine for my now 18 mo old boy. Of course, I am able to recite it by rote after oh, about 10,000 times. I don't even have to pay attention any more, as he knows where to turn the pages. Why do I keep doing this night after night? Because every time I ask him if he's ready for his story, he giggles with delight and runs to get Brown Bear, and Goodnight Moon, the other book of our nightly ritual. Brown Bear always comes first, Goodnight Moon always comes last. In between, we vary it with others, like Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear; Quick as a Cricket; Are You My Mother; The Very Hungry Caterpillar; Thomas the Tank Engine; etc. I love Brown Bear for making that sweet little boy express such delight at reading it.

Sandra Boynton's books are the PERFECT GIFT for baby showers....they are wonderfully rhythmic to read and babies love these! I always purchase these little board books for new parents who generally get all kinds of baby clothes etc. for showers but rarely get books to start a baby libary. You just can't go wrong with any of the books by Sandra Boynton, they beg to be read aloud!

We got this book from the library and my son loves it. We own The Mixed-up Chameleon book, but my son isn't as into that one, maybe it's for kids who are a bit older, as my son isn't quite 2. However, this book seems to be perfect for him, he loves to put his fingers in the holes the catapiller ate into everything. So, I'd say this might be the best Eric Carle book for the young toddlers, esp. since it's not a long story.

On the one hand, it's The Very Hungry Caterpillar - I love it (despite the upside-down butterfly on the last spread), I grew up with it, it's a great book.
On the other hand, I'm not sure it's a book very well-suited for board book format. The best feature of the book, the holes, are too small to be much fun, and the normal audience for board books is perhaps a little young to fully enjoy this one - it's too wordy without any narrative tricks (rhyme, meter, alliteration) to pull them in.
In retrospect, it would have been better to wait a few years and then just get the regular hardcover edition.

It was the perfect size for her to hold when she was younger, she loved it when we made the animal sounds, and now she sits and reads it aloud. Every baby should have one!

He will give it to me to read to him, and it actually keeps his attention!

Adorable story and illustrations. A must have for any nursery. But very young children will lose interest in it pretty fast because of the amount of text on each page and the fact that the pictures are pretty much the same on every page, and not brightly colored and bold. So not a BABY book. But still, who can resist the title alone??? Mom loves it even if baby doesn't yet.

I love the pictures in this book. They are clear and appealing to the toddler. The bad rhythm and rhyming structure, though, is jarring. In addition, the book focuses on failure a lot more than success. The baby keeps trying to go on the potty and things just don't work out for him. He finally does in the end, but I get the sense that it makes the process seem a little scary.

Let me first mention that I am a huge fan of Karen Katz's books. However, this book was a big disappointment. Instead of teaching the child how to use the potty, the story contradicts using the potty. The child in the book spends most of the time rejecting the potty. This book basically confused my child and I stop reading it. The illustrations are great, but the story indicates that this particular child is not ready to use the potty. The lack of encouragement and motivation of potty training in this story is not great at all.

My 20-month old son loves this book. He's not using the potty yet, but he loves to sit on the potty and have me read this book over and over and over... I have two other potty books for young boys and he is not interested in either (can't get past about 4 pages.) This book has just enough text and the story is very sweet. He gets a HUGE smile when we get to the end and read "I'm so proud of me!"

This book is not as great/classic as it is proclaimed to be. I look at Alborough and Boynton books before I look at this one. The art is horrible, its too european (mummy), and too blonde haired and blue eyed. My daughter likes it, but not as much as her other rhyming books.

This book is very cute and my son loves it. It just falls apart so easily though and can be very frustrating.
Still a Classic--but buy two

I have vague memories of owning this book as a young child, so when we received it as a baby gift, it was so fun to see it still in action. Our baby LOVES this book, and wants to look at it--and touch it really--every day. It captures and engages a baby's way of exploring his or her small world through touch, smell and sight. It does get worn out after a year or so, so I recommend buying two!
