I bought this book for a friend's child years ago, and knew I'd want to buy it for my own child one day, too. So, my little guy just turned a year old recently, and happens to be a big Sesame Street fan. When this book arrived, he got so excited to see Elmo on the cover! He LOVES it! We read this book several times a day. He loves opening all of the flaps and seeing all of his favorite characters inside. This book will also grow with a child, because it's not just fun to look at - it teaches numbers, letters, shapes, and opposites. At 15 mos. old, my son can do the number flaps in order after using this book, and can also identify shapes on the shape page. As an early childhood educator, I've seen a lot of children's books, and this is a great one!

My 10 mo. old daughter loves this book and it's alot more durable than I thought it would be. She has ripped off some of the flaps but for the most part they are pretty strong. I definitely recommend this book to other parents especially for those whose children love Elmo!

This is a wonderful book and my granddaughter loves it. I had to open all the tabs first as they are really stuck to the page and have to be pried open. If you let a toddler do this they will tear every tab and it will be difficult for them to even find the tabs. Any child into Sesame Street and who isn't will love this book!

My son LOVED this book when he was about 2. It was a favorite and I read it to him too many times to count for a couple of years. I like to give this book as a gift. My godson (20 months) "reads" it every day. He loves to open the flaps and count. And of course, he's a huge Elmo fan. Highly recommended!

This book has been so entertaining for my newly potty trained daughter and her older sister who loves reading it with her. They laugh hysterically at the end. My two year old was still resisting going poop in the potty and I believe this book helped to change her mind.

My son is two years old, and he absolutely loves this book! When I ask him to chose a book to read, this one is always in the running. The title of the book "Where's the Poop" is not a phrase that is used throughout the book (as it would seem) But it is implied that parents can/should use the phrase when reading with their child. This book is definitely useful for potty training. In fact, so helpful that now my child is extremely curious when our cat goes to the bathroom in the liter box, or the dog going to the bathroom in the yard. It was almost like a light bulb went off, and my son realized that every living thing has a proper place for poop. Potty training is going very well, by the way. I highly recommend this book for children who are curious by nature. It definitely helped a lot with my son.

This book is great. It sets the stage for the potty talk. It shows that there is a proper place for each animal to go the bathroom, including people. It doesn't have the name recognition of "Everyone Poops," but it is also more subtle and offers a lesson at the end istead of random pictures and rhetorical questions.
If you're having trouble deciding between this and "Everyone Poops" buy THIS ONE. Where's the Poop is a fantastic book!

My father-in-law bought this book for my 3 year old daughter and she just loves it! It teaches empathy in such a cute and fun way! When Gerald falls while trying to dance all of the other animals laugh at him and he walks away sad. Gerald however is determined to dance and doesn't give up. Finally he finds his inner music and is a fantastic dancer. All of the other animals come around and can't stop watching him dance. This story is told in such great rhyme it is so much fun. After reading this book I looked up the author and bought an alpahbet book which ended up being equally as fantastic..."K is for Kissing a Cool Kangaroo"

Do you like calm and weird books? If you do then is the book for you. The story Giraffes Can't Dance is about a Giraffe who is very clumsy and can't dance and gets teased a lot by other animals. Then he figures out that there is something called a jungle dance that will happen in a couple of days and all the animals practice some in groups more then two like the baboons and some just two like the lions. So then he practices but it's no help. So then a wise cricket helps him practice. I won't tell you the hole story but I will give you some more details like the setting is the jungle and some of the characters are the Giraffe, the baboons, lions and more animals that you will love. I thought the authors message was that just because someone or something can't do some thing doesn't mean you shouldn't be their friend or bail on them. So if you want to see what happens by the book I am sure you will like it.

I love this book! My mentor read it to her 8th grade class before they went off to high school and i bought it as a parting gift for a friend of mine who just went to college. It has a wonderful message of "dancing to you own beat" or just being yourself, no matter what people think. Seeing that i just had my first child, i will definitely be buying him this book and i will read it to him, even if he is only 3 months old because i don't think anyone is too young to be taught that they deserve individuality.

This isn't one of the pigeon books where you talk back to the pigeon. Instead, the pigeon talks to the Special Guest Star - the Duckling!
My nieces (aged 5 and 2.5) can literally recite this one by heart. And they will! Oh, they will. They love every page of it, and if that's not a good recommendation, I don't know what is!
They even (especially) love the inside covers. On the front inside cover there's a lot of hot dogs, but on the *back* inside cover one of the hot dogs has been cut in half - just like the pigeon cuts his hot dog in half to share it with the duckling!

This is one of those books that tells a story with just the pictures. If you have a small child, you are 'explaining' the pictures and adding these words in that is all dialog. At 8pm, I don't want to make up a story around a book. I want to read a book to my kid.
Although the illustrations are cute, I still wish there was more narrative.

My daughter likes all of Karen Katz's lift the flap books, but this one isn't the greatest of topics for a 1-yr-old. Plus it perpetuates gender stereotypes. Even though the kid in the story is gender-neutral, the daddy is all about tools and building stuff.

I don't know if any one book actually helped get my son to potty train. I think it helped put the idea into his head though. Potty training is more difficult than I ever imagined, but I think we're getting there. I recommend this book though. Kind of odd drawings with pictures of the boy's rear end, but I guess kid's need to see it. Maybe.

Do not purchase this book. I looked for a few books to get my son excited about potty training. I don't consider myself to be an ultra conservative type, but after the first few pages I was appalled. I've read this book to my son once. Even my 10 year old daughter was disgusted by the book when she heard me reading it to my son.
This book did not catch my son's attention, for many reasons - I am sure. The illustrations were very bland. The book reads more like a textbook (with the exclusion of proper names for body parts). I think the author was more worried about being gramatically correct then having a fun to read book with an enticing cadence. One last thing... How can we expect our child to relate to Joshua's potty experience when his potty looks more like a bowl, large planter or old school pitcher?

I have used this book prior to potty training 3 generations of boys in our family. I introduce it about 6 months before I think each child will be ready for training. The kids love the story and the fact that the pictures are anatomically correct! They carry the book with them wherever they go and eventually "read" it to themselves.
This book is not a toilet training method or an end unto itself. I think it is best used to prepare children for the idea of using the potty. As a parent educator, mom and grandma I recommend it to all parents to use along with Toilet Training in Less Than A Day.I've never known these to fail if followed accurately!

I really enjoy reading "Once Upon A Potty" to my kids. It's rather direct and features gender-specific illustrations of the "parts" for boys and girls. This particular book features the male anatomy of little Joshua. Joshua's story gives children the confidence to sit and wait for something to happen, even if it doesn't feel like something will occur.
I personally don't consider this book a good teaching tool for potty training. While it's a fun story and does get rather specific about body parts, it doesn't teach little boys how to stand when urinating. As others have stated, the illustrated potty is a "wee" bit outdated as well.
Still, kids will have fun with this book and I do mildly recommend it. Some parents might think that terms like wee-wee, poo-poo and pee-pee are too childish for their children, but I think they're just fine for the little ones.

I read this to our son, sadly, after he "out grew" these books, they were passed on. Happily, after searching all over I found these treasures on Amazon and now have a new collection for our beautiful grand daughter to enjoy.

This is the same Little Golden Book that I had as a little kid way-back-when! What a flash-back, and what wonderful fun to share it with the kids in our circle today.
Wonderful illustrations, and the story just as we remember it!

Silly, Sanitized Disney Version of the Real Story

Disney always manages to turn meaningful literature into vanilla pap. In this version of the story, a "novelized" version of the Disney cartoon, the pigs are all "males", all survive the wolf's predations and the wolf escapes with only a mere scalding of his hairy hindquarters when he tries to come down the chimney into the brick house of "Practical" Pig. BORING!
Now, in the original version of the story, the pigs are all females, they don't wear white gloves and have three fingers, the first two pigs wind up in the wolf's stomach, and the last, smartest pig runs the wolf ragged by turning his efforts to lure the pig out of her house into several humorous and stinging humiliations. In the original version, the wolf meets his end in the pig's pot and rough justice is served.
Do yourself and your kids a favor - buy the Rabbit Ears audio CD of Holly Hunter narrating the original version. Told in her molasses drawl, she gives the pig a hilarious Long Island accent, and the wolf sounds like a native of South Bayonne. Although she takes a few liberties with the dialog (Wolf to Third Pig: "I'll bite you so hard it'll hurt your parents!!!"), it's a more faithful rendering of the story as it was meant to be told.

Wonderful Book! Our family actually likes this one more than the preceeding book "How I Became A Pirate" also by the same author and illustrator.. This book will have the entire family talking like pirates...but with out swearing! =) My daughter requested this one night after night, she then could rectite it entirely by herself. She would pretend to "read" it to her younger sister. You will not be disappointed it this book! Our family of four loves it! "Ahoy there Jeremy Jacob!"

This isn't a pirate book. This is a babysitting book with a guest appearance by Captain Braid Beard and his crew of seven.
What made the first book interesting -- Jeremy Jacob experiencing the highs and lows of life on a pirate ship -- is exactly why this book never takes off. The pirates come to Jeremy's house and there's just not much interesting to do or see there.
My sons -- ages 5 and 4 -- love to read about pirates during their bedtime. They'll ask me to reread their favorites but this book never garnered a second request.
In summary, I recommend "How I Became a Pirate" but advise you to leave this sequel on the shelf.

I totally adored Long and Shannon's original book, and by golly this is definitely a worthy sequel! Jeremy Jones seems to be up to a fairly ordinary afternoon keeping an eye on his sleeping baby sister. But then, aye, those crazy, loveable pirates return to dig up their treasure in order to buy a new ship. But those pirates are loud and soon the baby is screaming. This has all the charm of the original book and a more organized plot that puts all these fun characters into a good, tight storyline. These scurvy sea dogs may be able to tackle the high seas, but dealing with babies is quite a challenge for them! Shannon's illustrations are as wonderful as ever and I completely fell in love with Long's new story. I hope this is the beginning of a good pirate series, because it truly is a fu

My 4 year old son loved the first book (How I became a Pirate) so I got him the sequel recently, when our baby daughter was born. He LOVED the book and the heavy pirate lingo. The pictures, as in the first book, are beautiful. I think it's a great "big brother" gift (so much more fun than the usual "big brother" books that are out there) or birthday gift for a boy (you could also supplement with a pirate eye-patch or scarf to make the gift complete).
I dare you not to smile when you read this

We don't have the first book, so I can definitely say that this book can stand on it's own merit. My 6 and 3 year old boys love this story. From the funny illustrations (just look at how many things those pirates practiced diapering) to the silly pirate greek chorus (they get to echo what Braid Beard, their captain says or what he orders them to do). The boys particularly seem to enjoy the results of the Captain's order to, "Rock on, me hearties." (Yes, there is air guitar involved, and you will laugh out loud when you seen the illustration). The utter helplessness of these poor pirates as they try to contend with babysitting Bonney Anne is charming. We have read this story several times over the past couple of months and it's as enjoyable for me as it is for them.

This is a good book for kids who like trains. It does have one area that talks about not staying dry but overall it is positive towards using the potty.

This is an absolutely wonderful book! We read it every night for a week, and one day our 21 month old son declared he wanted to "ride potty train". A success! It's a great way to get children excited about the potty, reduce any fears, and make it a fun way to visit the bathroom (we keep ours in a basket by the potty).
It's light-hearted and beautifully illustrated. A must-have for any child (especially boys since this is the featured character) that loves trains.

our two year old daughter loves the potty train. she was showing all the signs of being ready for the potty but this was the book that turned theory into practice. she loves to sit on her potty with the book in her lap and a big "choo choo" as things started to happen. a wonderful book, very engaging for small children. our six year old even liked it, especially the last page (and i aint going to spoil the surprise for you). i would highly recommend this book for anyone with a child ready to take the next step in life's great adventure.

This wonderfully engaging book has become my standard gift for my friends' new born grandchildren. Everyone who has been fortunate enough to receive it has loved it. A pediatrician friend of mine doesn't want to rush her little one's life along, but knows that when it's time it will be the first one to be read to her.
This charming story of potty training gives kids permission to try it without guilt. The pictures and colors bring the story to life. You'll love it!
