we couldn't be happier with "once upon a potty" .. we received it, along with cotton trainers, when our girl was 22 months old ... she had already been exhibiting all the classic ready-for-pottying cues, with regular morning & after nap pee-pee-ing, so the addition of prudence's story was the icing on the cake that gave her the confidence to really go full-time for the potty.

it's a confidence booster, and we adore it ( though we did change the potty language to suit our family : no biggie! ) and it will be a treasured selection in her library forever.

alona, thank you for writing a smart book for smart kids.

I thought the book would be a bit long for my daughter's attention span but she actually loves it. It has great step by step explanations, its simply & the illustrations are colorful enough to keep her engaged. The picture of the little girl is anatomically correct (in a benign sense of course) & the time it takes to read the book fills the time she needs to sit long enough to be successful.
My daughter loves the book & so do I!

doesnt look anything like a potty

The pictures are cute but what is the point if the potty doesnt look anything like one, it is a pot with a handle! I have been reading it to my 21 month old daughter and I skip a lot of the pages. Might be ok for older kids but I am not very impressed with this book.

My daughter loves this book. She is 14 months old and brings it to me 3x a day in order for me to read it to her.

The only con is that the flaps are sometimes difficult to open but after a while the corners get bent (from my daughter) and it makes it easier.

Great Book!

This is the first Karen Katz book my daughter has seen...it was given to her by her Aunt for Halloween this year. And although she is only 8 1/2 months old, she absolutely loves this book because of the flaps that open and close. It's the only "toy" I take to church with us and it keeps her amused the entire time. (Although, she does like to screach when she gets excited, so sometimes it's a little embarassing).

Just to add to the chorus of praises, if you have a toddler you really should buy this book. Our 14-month old loved it from the moment she opened the cover, and she has continued to come back to it as a favorite in the weeks since. The flaps are big and sturdy so she can get ahold of them herself, and she loves the different pictures and textures. From my perspective, the illustrations are charming and really capture the excitement of halloween for a small child, so I like looking through it too. Brava to Karen Katz for a wonderful book!

I got this when I was pregnant with my son, and I loved it. I especially loved the encouragement to read to him while I was pregnant. I was amazed to see that some reviewers gave it low stars for being too small. Since when does that matter?

And I guess you have to be a Seuss fan, because there are a lot of references to Seuss characters, but I loved that. Thanks for a great book!

Not by Seuss, nice prose, VERY SMALL

While not written by Seuss, the prose is jaunty and fun. However, the book is TINY! It's definitely a "gift book" size and not something you'll be able to pick up and read to your vision-impaired newborn. I'll buy Cat in the Hat next time.

Great pregnancy gift!

Oh, Baby the Places You'll Go makes a great gift for expectant mothers and fathers. The forward to the books explains how reading to babies in utero affects them. The story takes bits and pieces of Dr. Seuss favorites and combines them to create an adorable story about what lies ahead for the new baby and the anticipation that parents are feeling. It might even bring a tear to your eye!

Dear Baby,

Me wife got this book from a friend who's name was Brook.
Read it and breed it and enjoy she said while she cooked; So we got really busy one-sy, two-sy, and three-sy all in one nightsy we did.
You will be bornsy about nine monthsy after we sealed the deedsy, and daddy slept wellski after we mades they I did.

I shall read this book to an embryo in utero you see, and maybe I'll do it while's eating for free. Your brain will be insane with all the verbage you'll hear. Soon you'll bounce while I bald and tell bad jokes in your ear. Those wrinkles I receive you'll give me for free. One-ski, Two-ski, I see more-ski before I forty, OH DEAR. My dad-ski warned me of all the trouble you'll cause. He said, "You'll get a child who will grey and shave you like me." I said, "A, I'm not grey, but I occasionally take a rolaids before I take my wife for a jump in the Hay, Hay Hay."

In the end the book claims you'll be smarter and a better farter if I read to you this day. I'll do it I say, just keep you little pee pee at bay, and promise not to spray....

Bottom Line: Great little book. Cute read it to your child in utero and watch the brain grow. I had to use the word embryo with utero, but your childs not an embryo.

A wonderful gift for the expectant parents!

I purchased this to give to my soon to be daughter-in-law as a fun item to include in a package I was sending her. I always liked the original version of this Dr. Seuss book and was excited about this one.

It is a very cute book and I love the story. I think the size of it makes it easy for you to hang onto and pass on. Definitely pick one up for the Dr. Seuss lover to start their baby out early.

911 Basics

I am employed as a 911 Dispatcher and when I saw this book, I had to get it for my newborn granddaughter. While it is written for a toddler, not an infant, I expect it to teach her when to pick up the phone and call for help. It's written on the level of a small child and explains how public servants are there to help them. A fellow dispatcher is expecting her first child, and I just had to pick up one for her as well.

Great book, but...

I love this book. I love any book that enables me to teach my child anything about safety. This book allows my daughter to see the keypad and dial the numbers just like on a real phone. It has a very simple "story" and is easy for her to understand. My ONLY complaint is that it's not as real-life as I would like it to be. On a REAL 911 call, the operator generally answers and says "911-What is your emergency" or something to that effect. It seems silly to me that the sound effects in this book say "911-Let's go!!!" and then blares sirens and fire truck horns. I just think that it should be closer to a real life situation since 911 is a serious phone call. Other than that one tiny thing, I think this is a great book to assist kids in the importance of dialing 911 and learning that it's just for emergencies and not for playing!!

Great for young kids!

I highly recommend this book for toddler age kids, it allows them to dial 911 and gives different reasons for calling for help. The pictures are for young people, they are not scary or intimidating! The classroom teacher made a lesson plan from this book after my son brouhgt it in for show and tell!

I gave this book to my three year old grandson after talking to him about how to call 911 and reasons to do it. The book has a phone pad so 911 dialing can be practiced and memorized. The dialing is answered with the sound of sirens; it would be better if a voice said, "What is your emergency, where do you live and what is your name?." The siren is very loud. Overall tho, I think the book is helpful in giving examples of what conditions would require a call to 911. My grandson knows his name, his address and how to hold his hand under someone's nose to see if they are breathing. The book is sturdy and colorful and will help children learn when and when NOT to call.

The book is cute and it has a couple of interactive touch spots for kids to learn from, but the book is clearly made for a 6 month-1 year old. My daughter loves the Max & Ruby series and I have been looking to get her some merchandise. Unfortunately, none of the books I have ordered (that are listed on Amazon at least) compare to the show. Very little story and just a lot of thick paper.

Nine dogs on a moonlit night - AAAA-OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Review Date: 2008-08-09
There are ten dogs in this book. (And one cat.) Each dog (and cat) has its own way of making lots of noise. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to make a public nuisance of yourself by BARKING AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS! AROOFF! AROOFF! AROOFF!

That really just about sums it up.

If you think you can't manage it - don't buy the book. But if you think you *can*, you're bound to have great fun with it. I promise :)

Just... don't expect your kids to learn their numbers this way. They'll get too caught up with the barking!

My son loves this book. We started reading it when he was 18 months old and a year later he still loves it. It's great for learning to count. I gave it 4 stars however, because the typical toddler my son is, repeats are a must. So on round 3-4 of this book my voice starts to become horse from the different barking sounds the dogs make...

He liked it so much that everyday he would ask for it himself. I only wish they came in spiral bound or something like similar, so that I need not hold the book for him while he is working.
