We were having a difficult ime with my grand daughter being willing to use the potty each time. She loves Dora so when I saw this book I bought it for her. The only time she can read it is if she is on the potty and she hasn't had an accident since.

This book is cute - it's Dora so no literary genius but she has her hold on our daughter and we thought readinga bout Dora using the potty would be a good motivator. The only dissapointment is that when we rec'd our book, the potty noise button is broken. It just doesn't seem worth the time or $ to ship it back for a new book. Amazon: if you're reading, please send another :)

This is a nice book, no matter what stage of potty training your child is in. The illustrations of Dora when she is little are cute. Dora explains how when she was little, she wore diapers. Dora notices that big kids and grown-ups went into a room that made a flushing sound. Her mommy explains that bigger kids use the potty. Then her Mami and Papi gives her potty SEAT. (This is interesting because it's the kind that sits on top of the toilet. Most books introduce a potty chair. It may be important to parents who want their kids to learn on the toilet and not a potty chair.) Dora says, "First I had to learn when it was time to go. Sometimes that was hard to do, but other times I made it just in time!" and soon after says, "I practiced a lot, and soon I started using the potty all by myself. Then it was time for my first pair of big-girl underwear". "Now I'm a big girl who goes on big adventures! I wear big-girl underwear; and I use the bathroom just like all the big kids and grown-ups. Soon you'll use the potty like a big kid too. And then you'll be ready for any adventure." The book has a button to press to hear the flushing sound of a toilet. You and your child will enjoy this book!

I, along with many other parents of Dora lovers feel almost obligated to buy anything and everything Dora. It's what drove me to buy this book, and since my daughter is semi-interested in the potty, I thought, "why not?". Yes, the book is cute, it makes sounds (oooh!) and of course my daughter loves it. Please note that there isn't actually a picture of Dora on the potty, just a "before" and "after", which is not very educational. Just don't be fooled into thinking that this book is actually going to aide you in the draining process of potty training. When your child is ready, they're ready, and when they're not, well... they're not, and no book is going to make them ready. Not worth it, in my opinion.

I bought this book because I had happy memories of reading little golden books when I was a child. The story is well written and the pictures are very cute. The kids love the repetitive nature of the story.
But I had some concerns after I read the story. The story shows that the puppy is rewarded for being "poky" the first four iterations of the story, and then punished the last iteration after the other puppies catch on to what he's been doing. So the message it seems to send to kids is "if you misbehave, you can get away with it by letting others take the blame and you can even get a reward if you're careful about how you do it." My 3 year old has read it many times, and I don't know if its impacted his behavior. But it just left a bad taste in my mouth.

What a wonderful, marvelous book! I heard it read on the Radio and had to buy it for a little friend named Nicolas. He was not yet 3 y/o but sat intently and listened and mimicked the repetitive phases in the book. It is worth the read for all aged-children with lovely illustrations. There are many lessons-learned throughout this short book. Enjoy! Sherri Anderson, Bonita, CA

A Visitor for Bear is a children's picturebook about the genesis of a most unlikely friendship. Bear is very grumpy and prefers his privacy; his "No Visitors Allowed" sign makes that clear. But then a little grey mouse comes to call - and won't take no for an answer! No matter how much Bear forbids it, the little grey mouse keeps turning up. At last Bear capitulates and agrees to spend some time with the mouse in exchange for the mouse's agreement to leave afterwards. It turns out that sharing jokes and tea with a new friend can be fun after all! A gentle story about the pleasure of meeting and becoming friendly with new people.

I have three kids, as many kids' bookshelves, and about a billion kids' books have passed through our house. There are many I love, but this book grabbed me in a way few have. I bought it on the spot, for no reason, and have spent many afternoons reading it to my kids (even the ones who might think they are "too old" for it seem to slowly get pulled in each time.)
There was a staff review card attached to the shelf under this book, and I remember seeing the words "instant classic" written. No words could better describe this book, and I am waiting anxiously to see if more Bear and Mouse books are published.

This book was the first baby gift I received for my son. Due to his insatiable appetite for books (literally.... he eats them!) I kept this book away until he was getting over this phase. He's 14 mos old and this book is his favorite. It's great for him because he loves to flip through pages quickly, so the fact that there are only a couple of words per page works well for him. He isn't talking at all yet, but his first word will be one of the animal noises from this book! I only gave it 4 stars though, because the flaps are kinda flimsy in that they bend easily under the fingers of over-zealous little readers.

We all know this book, no need for me to re-iterate the plot.
What makes it work, though, is that Dr. Seuss understood the importance of breaking the rules - something many of his imitators never grasp. He didn't stick to a rhyme scheme or a meter all the time, he varied it and dropped it when needed. That makes his books readable instead of mind-numbing - even when you're reading them for the 1000th time straight :)

As a mom of a 24 and an 8 year old (I know . . . big surprise) I am firmly of the opinion that Dr. Seuss is the greatest American philosopher! In this book he urges us to try things that we may be afraid of or even repelled by. Many folks think this book applies only to food but I think he is urging us to be more brave in all avenues of life. We need to listen to those around us urging us expand our horizons. I believe that if we go for it and 'take a bite of the egg and ham' then we too will say "Thank you, thank you Sam-I-am."

I forgot how much I loved this book until I began reading it for my 3-year-old. She loves it, and I love reading it to her (unlike the ELMO books which our daughter loves and I dread). You really can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss. The illustrations are imaginative and the writing is really a work of genius in children's literature. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Being the cruel and heartless person that I am, it was been years since I have bothered to so much think about this book. But, it being the week of the celebration of Dr. Seuss I have been reading various Suessian books to them. I forgot what a fun tongue-twister of a tale this was! My kids were able to repeat entire sections of the book with me and the illustrations are entirely animated without moving. Awesome book.

This book is loaded with well-designed practice exercises that will keep your child's language skills sharp and expanding. My son and I like its format of five items per day. What a relief that you know you will finish in 10 minutes. It makes the studying easy and even fun! They look so simple, but if you keep on doing them, they make a big difference over time.
Since my son started using this book, he often gets on the honor roll out of many peers in Beestar (a very nice web site at Beestar.org). I think this book had built a fairly solid foundation for him. Highly recommend.

They need repetition for writing skills, capitalization and grammar. If you just do one little section a day it really adds up over the year. It's easy and fast.

This book is divided into weeks, with a 5 question review for each day of the week. I use this in my 2nd grade class. We do one a day, it takes about 10 min. for the kids to complete and for me to go over the skills and answers. It is a great way to review different skills, from correcting sentences, to matching vowel sounds in words or finding the correct spelling of a word. My students are finally getting that a complete sentence starts with a capital letter and ends in puncuation. I would recommend this book to any teacher that doesn't have time to teach a full grammar lesson each day.

My 10 mo. old daughter loves this book and it's alot more durable than I thought it would be. She has ripped off some of the flaps but for the most part they are pretty strong. I definitely recommend this book to other parents especially for those whose children love Elmo!
great book, lots of lifting

I am always looking for educational type activities that are fun...my 18month daughther seems to really enjoy all the "lift windows" that are in this book. I would highly recommend.
Beautiful book! Needs adult help.

This is a wonderful book and my granddaughter loves it. I had to open all the tabs first as they are really stuck to the page and have to be pried open. If you let a toddler do this they will tear every tab and it will be difficult for them to even find the tabs. Any child into Sesame Street and who isn't will love this book!
Great Book for Tots

My son LOVED this book when he was about 2. It was a favorite and I read it to him too many times to count for a couple of years. I like to give this book as a gift. My godson (20 months) "reads" it every day. He loves to open the flaps and count. And of course, he's a huge Elmo fan. Highly recommended!
Not very durable

I recently purchased this for my 3 year old. On the plus side, he absolutely loves it. It is very engaging for a child who loves Sesame Street, and I think very educational too. But, one of the flaps ripped within 5 minutes of its first use. (And, my son is relatively gentle with his books.) We've had a lot of lift-and-look type books over the past 2+ years, and the strength/durability of this one does not compare. For example, the Baby Einstein series seems to have thicker flaps. Kids will probably love it, but be aware it might not last long.
