We love this book. My daughter loves every Karen Katz book that I have read to her. After reading this book many times, one time when a family friend asked my daughter for her favorite stuffed animal lamb, my 18 month old daughter handed our friend a different stuffed animal lamb that was not her favorite. I love that it gives a solution to finding a way to share something without giving it up or taking away from the fun of it.

Just O.K.

I was actually a little bit disappointed in this purchase. The "flap" is in the same place on the same side of every page. Not very interesting or challenging.

Great Introduction to Sharing

My 17-month old was very familiar with the word "MINE" so I bought this book to help us introduce the concept of "Sharing" with her. It worked great. She loved the pictures and lifting the flaps and I have caught her "reading" this one on her own later. She definitely understands sharing now and this book really helped us show her how much happier everyone is when you share. Definitely worth the price. The pages are a nice quality, too, that won't easily rip.

I wish this had smaller flaps like some of her other books, though. It's more fun for the baby to lift the small flap to reveal a surprise instead of lifting the whole page the way this one is set up. The baby doesn't understand how to put the page back down before turning the page, so the whole book ends up with the pages sticking out when you are done and it gets a little confusing. That's the only downside.

Not really about sharing

This book is okay. I was a bit disappointed in that it's really not about sharing. On each page, the child doesn't want to share the toy they're playing with. On the reveal page, the child "shares" by giving the other child a different toy to play with, or something similar to that effect. It would have been nicer, to see the child actually giving the same toy to the other child to "take turns" or sincerely "share".

This is NOT sharing.

Look, I really like this author and own and read a ton of her books to my kids, but this one just really rubs me the wrong way.

My main problem is that the book is called "I Can Share" and then what follows are several examples of kids doing things that are anything but sharing.

For example,

One girl asks, "Can I play with your doll?"

The other girl replies..."No...but you can play with this other Doll."

Ok, That is NOT sharing. Its appeasement. None of the examples are sharing. They are keeping what you have and appeasing the person asking you for something by giving them something else.

Now, ironically, I tend to believe that "sharing" is highly over-rated. We try to teach kids to "share" their toys with other kids, when in fact, we as adults rarely share our toys with our friends.

However, what I don't want to do is teach my kids that words have bendable meanings...or that this is what sharing means.

The verb use of the word share is as follows:

1. to divide and distribute in shares; apportion.
2. to use, participate in, enjoy, receive, etc., jointly: The two chemists shared the Nobel prize.

None of the actions in this book are remotely close to that definition.

This book should be titled, "I Can Mollify." or even better "How to Spin Your Friends Into Appeasement When They Want Something You Got."

ISBN 0763607525 - Lift the flap books, in general, suffer from one flaw - the flaps themselves. If you decide to buy a used copy, it's a good idea to make sure that all the flaps are intact, since they tear off fairly easily. That aside, this book is a great one for little budding readers.

The reader is told that Maisy is going to hide (it shows her picture, so you can identify her, in case you're one of the five people in the world who don't know what she looks like and couldn't spot her on the cover). On the following pages, you look for her in various places by lifting flaps - and finding all of her friends before finding Maisy!

The illustrations are admittedly not world-class stuff, but they ARE standard Maisy. They are basic but full of bright colors and, combined with the lift-the-flap aspect, a lot of fun.

My daughter is now 17 months old, ever since she started being interested in books (as early as 11 months) she has always loved this one. She gets more and more excited as we get closer to the end and she loves looking behind the door. I noticed all the little kids at the daycare also just stopped whatever they were doing when I read this book to them once. The best 'Peek-a-boo' type book we've seen.

If your child loves Maisy, they will love this book! My 20 month old never tires of "looking" for Maisy under the flaps and will sit for 15-20 minutes at a time "reading" this. Even her older sister enjoys it!

Although simple in design and message, this book is great for exploring affection, emotions, and simple communication. Because of its simple story line and subject matter, it's completely engrossing whether I'm reading it to my daughter or she's turning the pages by herself. One of our favorites, especially since it provides an excuse to sit down for an extra hug.

This book tells a terrific story with only three words: "hug," "mama," and "bobo!" (Bobo is the name of the chimp.) I've given this book numerous times as a gift because it is perfect for toddlers--wonderful drawings and a lovely story about a mom who returns to give her child a hug. My kids loved to "read" the book with me, saying "hug!" at each picture of animals hugging. And we never failed to give each other big hugs at the end of the story.

This is one book worth trying to keep around for our grandkids!

My son (who is 2) loves this book. He likes to 'read' the text, which is largely the word "hug," which appears many, many times. ("Mommy" and "Bobo" also appear.)

The art work is cute, but the simplicity of the eternal story of the child/parent bond is what makes this story shine. There are books that use many more words that fail to capture the beauty of that bond nearly as well as this book. I recommend it to parents of toddlers, up to age 3. Tall is Bobo's continuing saga, and is also sweet.

I have read, excuse me, I have sung this book well over 200 times to my daughter in the last few months. It is a favorite of ours, and I was tickled by the additional verses it had in the book.

Her favorite part is the "crocodile scream" and the "lion roar", she loves to make the animal noises along with the song. This is a great book for young children.

Keep in mind that this book is nothing more than the words to the song, illustrated. We have no problem with that, but we bought our first books in the store, so we knew what we were buying.

I like the ryhme, but too short

We never really got that into this book. It is a nice rythym, and the pictures are okay - but it is only a few verses, and pages, long. Not a bad book, but so many better ones out there.

My 9 month old son loves this one. Right now he chews on it more than anything, but he really started loving the story once i made a game out of it. We sit on the floor and do the moves and the whole story and then I will read it to him and he just laughs and laughs. I definitely reccomend this one. Also I got my order quickly and safely.

I bought this book and "Ten Little Fingers" also by this author, and I am sorry I bought both of them. Unfortunately, I bought them as part of the "buy 3, get the 4th free" promotion - I bought 6 and these were my two free books. If not for that (and the return shipping costs) I would be returning them.

I have an 18 month old son and a 12 month old nephew, and neither of them are interested in these books at all. They are way too simplistic and boring.

This book basically has 3 verses of the song, which are cute enough and illustrated okay, but not enough to make a book out of. You are done reading/singing it in less than 30 seconds.

In my opinion, this book might be good for about a 3-6 month old when they are mostly looking at pictures and listening to the rhythm of your voice. My son has been listening to books since birth and is way beyond such a short, simplistic book. Over Christmas we had a board book with both verses of Frosty the Snowman, and he would ask me to sing that to him over and over. That book had about 20 full-size pages and this one has only 8, with 4-5 words per page. It is bigger than a lot of postcard-sized board books, though.

I agree with the person who said they bought these books based on the recommendations from other Amazon users, and feels misled. I especially relied on the grandparent of the 20-month old, and after seeing the book I totally disagree with them. I'm disappointed and wish it was worthwhile to seek a refund. Oh, well.

I love this book!

This is such a sweet book. I love that as time goes by, my daughter will learn to do the motions of the book on her own. Right now, she sits in my lap and we row and rock with song/story! The pictures are great- the babies are adorable. Also, I love that I now have additional lyrics to this classic song. I now sing all the lyrics to my daughter before she goes to sleep. Definitely worth the little bit of money you would spend to have this sure to be favorite in your child's book collection. :-)

This simple book is best read when you're feeling sentimental. The message will leave you teary-eyed. If you're not in the right mood, it will seem kinda sappy and even a little manipulative, at the end. No regrets buying it - I think it's very sweet, especially if you have a daughter.

I bought this book on a whim while purchasing another book for my son. I am so glad that I did! I could barely finish reading, I was crying so much. My son was born a preemie at 24 weeks, and for the longest time, we didn't know if he would have a 'someday'. The only way I was able to survive the 3 1/2 months in NICU, was dreaming of my son's future. This book took all of my thoughts and hopes and put them on paper. The illustrations are breathtaking in their sweet simplicity.

I don't think this is book is just fot the mother/daughter relationsip. It is more for all mothers/fathers and their children. As a mother who intends to read books like 'Little Women' to mmy son, I am not bothered that it pictures a girl instead of a boy. The sentiment is the same. I wish I had found this book while DS was in the hospital. It would have been a wonderful addition to "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" by Dr. Seuss.

I was at babies r us shopping for my first baby and I came across this wonderful book. I picked it up and as I reading it made me cry in the store. It touched me due to two things, it reminded of me and my mother, and it made me think of my son. It was poetic and so beautiful, it is the perfect book for any new mothers. I would of got it right in the store but it was 16 bucks and I knew amazon would have it for cheaper, they always do.

We purchased this book because our daughter is great at learning rhymes and we thought it would help her learn to tie her shoe. We were dissappointed that it teaches the "rabbit ears" knot, but even more dissappointed to find two of the illustrations out of sequence. That type of error make learning very difficult.

I ordered this book after I read about the good reviews. But I am disappointed. I do not really care what kind of methods (one or two loops) the book shows as long as my son can tie his shoes. But the pictures are really confusing for a 3.5 years old. The max he can do is to put the red lace over the yellow lace and tie the first knot. When it comes to the loops, he is totally lost. Hopefully it will work for an older kid. As for the wordings in the book, which the reader supposed to memorize and be able to tie his shoes later on, are not even rhyme.

Great way to learn

This book helped my son (5) understand the concept of tieing laces. The two different colored laces in the book are geneous. We put this idea on a pair of his shoes and it helps him tie a bow. I highly recommend trying it for your kids. My younger son is interested and exploring the book as well.

This is another adorable "Olivia" book. We have them all because I have a daughter named Olivia (she's 16 and still loves the books). This one is a board book for toddlers learning to count. The illustrations are great, but not stimulating enough for a baby - if that's what you're looking for. Otherwise, it's wonderful.

An Olivia-Themed Counting Book with Attitude

Review Date: 2007-12-07
Ian Falconer must have spent his time at some point repeatedly reading with a child "one hat, two cats, three dogs, four hens, five stars, six sticks, seven pennies, eight bows, nine toys, and ten cakes." While children are fascinated by such repetition as they struggle to generalize numbers from assemblages of objects, it's not as much fun for parents . . . except when they look deep into the delighted faces of their wee ones.

Olivia Counts takes dead aim at adult boredom, and adds vocabulary for the pre pre-school set. Part of the theming is also good for another reason: Most of the drawings in the book appear in earlier Olivia stories. That allows the adult reader to ask a youngster to count a bit when reading those other stories.

Here's an overview if you don't have one to look at:

1. one ball (It's a red and white beach ball that dwarfs Olivia who can barely hold it in her trotters while dressed in a red swimsuit at the shore.)

2. two bows (Two red bows adorn Olivia's generous ears as she smiles up at them.)

3. three pots of paint (Olivia is holding a brush . . . but it doesn't have any paint on it yet.) You may have to explain what a pot of paint is and why anyone would have one.

4. four aunts (Four black and white pig ladies are dressed demurely.) If your child doesn't have an aunt, this will take explaining, too.

5. five books (Only two are red, but this one is easy to understand.)

6. six teeth (Olivia is wearing a bag with a frightening face on it with six shark-like teeth painted on it.) So these are representations of teeth, not real teeth. This one may also require some discussion.

7. seven accessories (Ian Falconer must know lots fashion designer families, and I know you're going to have to explain what accessories are.) At least they are all in red to make the tie-in clearer.

8. eight cousins (These are very cute piglets in black and white with one holding a tiny soccer ball.)

9. nine toys (One standard after all, but they are not all in red. Query: Is a baseball a toy? How about a baseball bat?)

10. ten Olivias (This is the best one by far. I can hear the giggles across the land when this page is opened.)

If your child loves Olivia, or you can't stand regular counting books, and you don't mind explaining a few matters, this book will bring much joy . . . and some counting.

We have a lot of new baby books, and this was one of our favorites. It gives a lot of information without being overwhelming. It also does not introduce the negative side of siblings. I didn't want to put ideas into our son's head before the baby came. I figured he'd discover the negatives on his own and we could find books to address them later, if needed. Our son was 27 months when his sister was born and we read this for a few months before that. I think it helped, and he's adjusted quite well. We've bought it for a few friends having a second child too. Highly recommended!

MUST HAVE FOR SIBLING TO BE

THIS WAS A GREAT BOOK FOR PREPARING OUR 2 YEAR OLD AND 4 YEAR OLD SONS FOR THE ARRIVAL OF THEIR BABY BROTHER.

IT HAS PICTURES OF THE BABY DEVELOPING FROM EMBRYO TO 40 WEEK GESTATIONAL AGED BABY. THE STORY INCLUDES MOMMY'S GROWING BELLY, DOCTORS VISITS WHERE THE OLDER SIBLING HELPS GET THE BABY'S HB WITH THE DOPPLER, GETTING THE SIBLINGS BABY THINGS OUT FOR THE NEW BABY, TO GRANDMA COMING OVER WHEN MOMMY AND DADDY HAVE TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL, GRANDMA MAKES COOKIES AND FORTS WITH THE SIBLING, MOMMY, DADDY, AND BABY SISTER COME HOME.

AFTER READING THIS BOOK...EVERY TIME WE WENT TO SEE THE MIDWIFE MY SONS HAD TO HELP WITH THE DOPPLER, IT REALLY MADE THEM FEEL A PART OF THE PREGNANCY.

THIS BOOK IS STILL A FAVORITE TO READ AND THE BABY IS 23 MONTHS. I WOULD RECOMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO IS PREGNANT WITH OTHER CHILDERN.

Terrific!

This a a SUPER choice for little ones preparing to become older siblings. Although somewhat detailed with regard to "mommy's womb", "umbilical cord" and "baby's development" still enthralling to my 3 year old. She LOVES this book.

The art is great and the book helps the little one to feel like they can really play a special part in the new baby's life. It even focuses on nursing and the benefits behind it. Good for you Lizzy Rockwell!

I highly recommend this one. The best I have found. There are not many choices out there unfortunately.
