This is exactly the book you'd expect - each page has two animals doing opposite things (one is WEAK, the other STRONG, one talks in a WHISPER, the other in a SHOUT), with only two adjectives per page as the words (so don't expect Boynton's witty banter - the illustrations have to suffice) until the book is over.
Always great!

I teach remedial 3,4,5 grade math. Following the format of the other grade level editions, this provides a varied daily parctice and a short graphing of results at the end of the week. I use it as a "Do NOw" every beginning of math class to help keep skills fresh. It is appropriately layed out, appropriate to the grade level curriculum and a good, easy to use format that keeps the children on their toes!

I'm a firm believer of practice early on math. It will build kid's interest and confidence for the long run. This book is invaluable. It breaks grade 3 math into small pieces and let your child do a little every day. My daughter learned a lot from this book. She often asks further questions and thinks a lot more. It helped her do well in math. In the Beestar online math contest (a nice web site http://www.beestar.org), she often wins honor mentions. Very good math supplement.

As a homeschooling mom, the search for texts is difficult! This is not our main math text, but an easy way to keep my child up to speed in many different areas of math. For example, if we are studying geometry, he will still get daily practice in addition and subtraction... We use this book daily. I would recommend it as a supplement for any math program.

We have several of the touch and feel books in our home and our two year old has always enjoyed them. Kids love touching different things and the touch and feel books give them several different textures to work on. My two year old just loves Halloween. He'll ask to read Halloween books all year round.
As with the other touch and feel books, this one has vivid and color photography to accompany the various textures your child gets to touch including a pumpkin, Pirates Beard, the fur of a black cat, and a wizards robe. One can, I suppose question the educational value of these books but why must all books be educational? Bottom line is that all of these books are fun for kids to read and touch.

My eight-month-old son loves looking at baby photos now. This is a good choice, with photos from Guatemala, Thailand, Greenland, Mali, India, South Africa, Fiji, Peru, Afghanistan, Malawi, Spain, Iraq, Rwanda, Bhutan, and USA. The two USA photos are of a white boy and a Native American girl. I am still looking for a book with good mixed-race photos.

Babies in colorful clothing from such countries as Mali, Afghanistan, Iraq, Spain, Peru, Guatemala, South Africa, and India, delight the readers each time the book is opened. This is a great way to travel the world while sitting in a chair snuggling with baby.

We bought this book when my daughter was 4 months old, but it is only recently that she started picking it out for me to read to her. She laughs at the different baby faces, especially the boy sticking his tongue out, and it is one book that she wants to look at over and over. I love how diverse the book is, and the message is great. It would be a nice book for those doing an international adoption. Two pacifiers up!

A good resource for Reader's Theater in the classroom

These scripts are good; my students find them humorous. What is really good about the book is that each part in a script is given a rating (that only the teacher sees) according to how much of a challenge that role might be for a student. This tool makes it easier to match students with the right roles.
There aren't many scripts in the book (five). The scripts have too many roles in my opinion. I prefer to use scripts with small groups of no more than six. However, despite these two weaknesses, I recommend this resource for teachers in the upper elementary grades who are using reader's theater.

I actually got this book for my kids so that we could read them together at night. It turned out that this book is actually written for use in a classroom. (I didn't realize that it was by Scholastic when I bought it.) Fortunately I am just 2 classes away from being a teacher, so I can get some use out of it. This book would probably not be too useful for families--unless you are the Von Trapps and all the cousins are visiting.

The size doesn't bother me, my baby likes that. But the pictures are pretty blah I thought, especially since everyone raved over them. I don't think there's many pictures in the book that would appeal to a baby - a black and white pencil drawing, a couple paintings. I was disappointed. The picture on the cover is probably the best one.

My 4-year old really enjoys this book. Dora and Boots are making their way home for bedtime, and along the way they hear various animals making noises. It's interactive as well as just fun to peek under the flaps and find out who's making the sounds. Not recommended for children who still rip book pages--the flaps would be too tempting.

For $5.99 and Free Super Saver Shipping on Amazon this Dor Lift-the-Flap book is a very nice buy. Our little girl (1yr 10mos) loves this book. She really enjoys the lifting up the flaps. I don't really understand one of the 'Spotlight Reviers' giving this book 2 stars. Yes. It's not a board book and it's 'saddle stapled', but what do you expect for $5.99. This book will keep your little one entertained and is fairly durable. I recommend this and other Dora Lift-the-Flap books for your little explorer.

In many ways, this is just a reprisal of the original book.
Corduroy is out and about, he hears a comment that makes him think is outfit is lacking in some way (this time, he doesn't have a pocket), he goes looking for it, he gets lost and stays the night away from his friend Lisa, he makes a number of naive comments about his situation, he gets found, Lisa helps him with his outfit.
It's not a bad book, it's just not very original.

I likeed this book for my daughter. She loves the Corduroy character and identifies well with the book. The same characters from the previous Corduroy series, Lisa, and her mother and new ones like the artist, and the laundromat manager. Corduroy remains the same mischevious bear as he wonders away in search of a pocket. The story line is great for 3+ age group as it teaches children about what what goes on at a laundromat and other social skills like staying near mom or dad.

My 2 1/2 year old adores this book. In fact, I have had to make a rule of no more than twice a day. He calls it the "laundry book". I must disagree about the caged bear scene being frightening. My son specifically requests the caged bear scene and is obviously not scared in the least. It is a sweet tale of a little girl and her little bear. I love how the author uses some big words in a children's book. My son's vocabulary has grown exponentially!

I thought the book was entertaining and cute, and an introduction to what goes on at a laundromat. However, I don't think I would get this book for a young todder (under 4) due to the fact that there was one scene where Corduroy is alone in the dark of laudromat, inside a wired laundry cart, and he looks terrified. The picture is very scary and sad. I think it's too much for a little kid. But overall, it's cute, and the ending is good.

A collection of new fables using animals as characters and complete with little morals at the end of each one. There are all sorts of animals getting into all kinds of predicaments. The best thing about this book is that a kid doesn't have to sit down for very long to read the whole thing. Each fable is exactly one page, so it would be easy to just sit down and read a few if there isn't much time. I like the use of animals because it's traditional and fun for kids. The illustrations are hysterically funny as well.

I'm 21, going on 22 in April, but this was always one of my favorite books (next to Shel Silverstein's Where The Sidewalk Ends). My favorite was Cat and His Visions. My mother would read it slowly and deliberately, licking her chops like the cat would. I noticed that there was also a note in the discussions area that someone's child had nightmares - I ALWAYS had nightmares, but THIS BOOK MADE ME WANT TO FALL ASLEEP BECAUSE I LAUGHED SO HARD that it made me sleepy! I wish I had been able to dream about the cat and his fish - but then again, we had two cats at my house. We actually had a house fire and our two cats died in '98 or '99, but I still have great memories of laying on my bed with my mom, sister, and our kitties, reading fables. And I honestly think I'm a better person because of the lessons that are taught - I always was read Aesop's fables in school to the point where I was almost sick of them, so having this and Shel's book were wonderful, wonderful.
And for any of you parents out there, YES, IT DOES MATTER IF YOU ARE DRAMATIC with the reading. You may be too embarrassed now, and you may be again when your kids are older, but from the time they're born to the time they are about 12, go for the gushy stuff - yes, it's crazy to think of MY mother acting like THAT, or hugging me or anything, but deep down it makes me so happy. Just don't suffocate the kids! ;)

Middle elementary school.
I cannot remember a single one of these fables, which is because Lobel created them. They are fun with unexpected twists and wonderful morals.
Per usual, Lobel has superb, interesting, expressive, and fun illustrations. There is one illustration for each fable.

The problem with fables is that they are, at heart, sermons and most people don't want a sermon on a daily basis. However, if your sermon is interesting and funny and speaks to the world people see and understand, then people listening to it (or reading your fables) will not mind a little preaching. Aesop understood this, as did Jesus. I'm not so certain Arnold Lobel does. While he has a nice idea, the stories in this collection are dry and preachy and the only truly great part of the book is the wonderful illustrations, which are humorous and interesting, everything his fables aren't. If you've got a hankerin' for fables, then go to the source--Aesop. Old, but still good.

This is a collection of twenty short, simply written fables. Each is crafted to make a moral point, The author is droll and funny. Children can read this one or have it read to them and actually get the point. The adult reading the book can enjoy the tongue-in-cheek humor. Both adult and child can enjoy the wonderful illustrations. Now you might take note here. I suspect that those adults that take themselves too seriously may not appreciate this work as much as those that do not. The points the story makes could make some uncomfortable as it does point out the foibles that many of us have. I really did not have that problems as I am well aware of my flaws and certainly do not take myself all that seriously. This is a great book to read to the kids and certainly leaves room for much discussion.

This is a great, well made, and well thought out book for babies and toddlers. The language used with the photographs doesn't trash the English language trying to make cutesy rhymes. The photographs are fun and well done. Any in this series are great. My child loves them.

The baby photos in this book are great and this book has been a favorite of our son's starting at one month. AT 15 months he still loves it. The text is fine but mostly he just loves looking at the fascinating baby faces.

My 9 month old loved the faces in this book, but I couldn't let him read it on his own because the cardboard isn't laminated very heavily. As soon as he started chewing on it, it bubbled up and started peeling away. Doesn't hold up as well as a number of other board books we have. Will keep it for when he's older.
