With educational and testing standards getting more and more difficult, it is nice having a tool to provide students with practice with language arts skills. These Daily Language Practice sheets give 1st graders a daily dose of basic editing (adding capitals, basic spelling errors, punctuation). They also include a variety of other activities including sorting words, yes/no questions, rhyming words, and other fundamentals. The Friday sheet always has a different and more lighthearted activity. There is also a Daily Math Practice book and I xerox them back to back and use them as bellwork. Both are half-sheets which are completed in about 10 minutes. Highly recommended!

I have used extensive grammar and language texts with schoolchildren. And they would hate it! Now I use this book
and it is rather quick, efficient, and to the point.
The children enjoy their sessions as they learn.
You can have them practice handwriting as well as grammar and punctuation. It is really great.

I read this to our son, sadly, after he "out grew" these books, they were passed on. Happily, after searching all over I found these treasures on Amazon and now have a new collection for our beautiful grand daughter to enjoy.

Cute, sturdy book and a lovely story -- but beware; this version's abridged!

I have loved this book since I had it read to me many years ago, and am excited to share it with my own child. A word of caution, however, regarding the "Little Golden Treasures" version -- it has been abridged from the original! A purist like myself will prefer a copy of the full version. I may still pick it up for our child sometime down the road. The story is a lovely one and the pictures are beautiful.

This is a very cute little story of an elephant becoming comfortable with who he is meant to be. The characters in this story help Sooki the elephant realize he is just fine the way he is. It's an easy read with a sweet ending. Nice illustrations as well.

I purchased this book because I teach Spanish to children ages 3-6. It's a perfect book for learning animals and colors. The illustrations are simple and easy to understand. There aren't too many words and the repetitiveness aids learning. Kids are familiar with this book and love it. I recommend it if you teach little ones Spanish or if you speak Spanish to your young children.

This book is beautifully illustrated and a joy to read. The rhyming language used throughout is enjoyed by young children being read to. Once they start reading for themselves, the young reader enjoys the wordplay and beat of the rhymes. Finding the characters is fun, even after many readings. The firmer pages aids in the life of the book, especially for the very young reader just learning to turn pages.
I enjoyed reading this book to my children, and it was one of my 'must haves' once I became a grandmother. Both of my grandchildren (3.5 years and 18 months) enjoy it with me.

This book is very special to me, its great for kids headed to kindergarten. Its easy to read and adds a twist by having the child find something hidden on each page. I just bought it for my daughter, after I, twenty years ago, turned it in for a school book drive. I love it and would recommend it to anyone with a child.

This is a good book of a few rhyming couplets featuring fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters, perfect length to catch the attention of a young child - and enough detail in the pictures to keep the attention of an older one!

For those people who are concerned about this sort of thing, there are some references to "the Wicked Witch" (she's not shown being any more wicked than anybody else, and she eats pie with her neighbors at the end. Wicked is just her name, I guess) in the book, and there are also a few images of the three bears being very careless with guns while hunting. I don't find that this hampers our enjoyment of this book, but if these are sensitive topics for your family, you may want to check the book out of the library before committing to a purchase.

I have a 2 1/2 year old who is very verbal. She really enjoyed these cards though some of the questions on the back of the cards are a little advanced for her...there is definately room for growth in this toy. We also bought the my first words touch and feel cards and these are great cards for the 2-4 year old section of kiddos. I teach special ed students ages 0-5 and I can make these cards and the my first words cards adaptable for all the different ability levels.

My 15 month old daughter loves these cards. We have the complete set of Animals, numbers, colors, etc. She pulls them out daily and looks at them. She brings them to me so that I can teach her what the picture is telling her. They are sturdy under toddler feet, and in toddler hands. A wonderful product from the great publisher of DK. I recommend them over all other cards for this age group (and believe me I looked for an alternative).

We purchased these in the 4 for 3 special along with shapes, animals and first words for our 19 month old son. He was immediately interested and now will try and get the cards off the shelf by himself. We go over a few cards each day and the textures are great, allowing us to linger on one card a bit longer while we describe and go over it. There are also tips and tricks for parents and suggestions for questions to ask your child on the back of each card.

These are not thin, flimsy flashcards, they are more like thick cardboard and the packaging is great. They come in a sturdy box with a flap closure that keeps everything nice and tidy. Our son loves these and so far they are holding up great to all that loving!

I have read, excuse me, I have sung this book well over 200 times to my daughter in the last few months. It is a favorite of ours, and I was tickled by the additional verses it had in the book.

Her favorite part is the "crocodile scream" and the "lion roar", she loves to make the animal noises along with the song. This is a great book for young children.

Keep in mind that this book is nothing more than the words to the song, illustrated. We have no problem with that, but we bought our first books in the store, so we knew what we were buying.

I like the ryhme, but too short

I bought this book and "Ten Little Fingers" also by this author, and I am sorry I bought both of them. Unfortunately, I bought them as part of the "buy 3, get the 4th free" promotion - I bought 6 and these were my two free books. If not for that (and the return shipping costs) I would be returning them.

I have an 18 month old son and a 12 month old nephew, and neither of them are interested in these books at all. They are way too simplistic and boring.

This book basically has 3 verses of the song, which are cute enough and illustrated okay, but not enough to make a book out of. You are done reading/singing it in less than 30 seconds.

In my opinion, this book might be good for about a 3-6 month old when they are mostly looking at pictures and listening to the rhythm of your voice. My son has been listening to books since birth and is way beyond such a short, simplistic book. Over Christmas we had a board book with both verses of Frosty the Snowman, and he would ask me to sing that to him over and over. That book had about 20 full-size pages and this one has only 8, with 4-5 words per page. It is bigger than a lot of postcard-sized board books, though.

I agree with the person who said they bought these books based on the recommendations from other Amazon users, and feels misled. I especially relied on the grandparent of the 20-month old, and after seeing the book I totally disagree with them. I'm disappointed and wish it was worthwhile to seek a refund. Oh, well.

I love this book!

This is such a sweet book. I love that as time goes by, my daughter will learn to do the motions of the book on her own. Right now, she sits in my lap and we row and rock with song/story! The pictures are great- the babies are adorable. Also, I love that I now have additional lyrics to this classic song. I now sing all the lyrics to my daughter before she goes to sleep. Definitely worth the little bit of money you would spend to have this sure to be favorite in your child's book collection. :-)

I bought this for my little niece who is 3 years old. She liked the little stuffed rabbit. She also liked the illustrations in the book. She listened to some of the story being read, but I believe she will enjoy it more as she gets older. Her (my) nephews of which one is 2 and the other 4 loved both also. My sister has a 23 year old and a 3 year old daughter. This is a very good set, and priced nicely for any budget.

Well, I got this as a birthday gift from my boyfriend and I have to say, even though I didn't let him know, I was extremely disappointed in it. I asked him for a Velveteen Rabbit for my birthday, because it's what I wanted. He was so excited when he ordered it, thinking the rabbit was going to blow me away or something. Fact of the matter was, when it showed up, (actually the day before my birthday) I was so excited, like a child, opening my package. When I opened it, I don't know if I was able to hide my disappointment in the size of the bunny. It was smaller than my hand! After giving him a giant hug and a kiss for getting me what I wanted, I kind of moped and put the gift set away. Unopened. All I really wanted was a floppy velveteen rabbit like I had when I was a little girl, to hold and sleep with. I strongly believe that he thought he bought me a bigger bunny, because even he looked a little distraught and kept asking me if it was ok and if I really liked it. The picture is not just a little, but a LOT deceiving and I suggest that you READ VERY CAREFULLY between the lines and see the measurements of this tiny little rabbit. It's smaller than a Happy Meal Toy. Hell, it could even BE a Happy Meal Toy.

An Awesome Combination That Makes a Great Little Gift

I bought this sort of on a lark because I thought someone I was seeing might like it. We actually started talking online because of a quoted passage from the book and that eventually lead to us meeting up and so on. The gift turned out great.

I bought it again for someone else and ended up reading the story to her as we were both lay on top of my bed. I knew the story pretty well - having watched it read on some PBS early reader program, but had never read it myself. I teared up twice. She loved the book, having it read to her, and the little stuffed rabbit.

I bought it again for my 10 year old daughter. And read it to her also. I used to read to her a lot when she was younger, but that's sort of fallen by the wayside as she grew older. She loved that also.

I bought it again for someone else I was seeing and I read it to her at the airport as we were waiting for her flight back out west. She also loved it.

There might be something to be said for "recycling" the same gift for multiple people, but the Velveteen Rabbit is an important enough story that it should be shared. About becoming "real" and what it takes. I still tear up at the same spots, even after multiple readings.

Considering the price, there are very few other items that make such a great gift for sharing. The "Principles" book makes a great add-on in case you think $11 is too little for a gift.

At the time of writing this, the description for The Velveteen Rabbit Gift Set: Hardcover book and plush package has Product Dimensions: 17.2 x 8.2 x 3.7 inches. So I figured the plush doll would be 17.2 inches tall from base to ear tip, about the size one would imagine it to be after reading the book, it's not, closer to 10 inches total. Besides that, it's a great book, one of my childhood favorites.

One of the features of this book that I like is that there is an illustration of a child in the pose on one page and an illustration of the animal being mimicked on the facing page. There's also photos of real children doing the poses at the end. We enjoy the Sleepy Little Yoga book as well.

My 2 year old daughter LOVES Skippyjon Jones... I've bought all the board books for her that are available & am planning to buy the picture books as well. I personally love & enjoy the drawings, they are SO life-like to how a cat acts & looks, right down to the mischievousness in his eyes & his little front teeth. She loves his antics and all the things she can look at, point to, and the words she can try to repeat.

Can't recommend these books enough for toddlers. Don't know about yours, but even though she LOVES for me to read to her, her attention span doesn't hold long w/ very many books. These have consistently been her favorites for a long while now, I'm quite certain she'll enjoy them for a long time to come.

My daughter saw this book in a bookstore and asked for it---a rare thing for her, so I bought it. She has adored it every minute since! I would guess I've read it about 500 times, and she has looked at it about a thousand more. I didn't realize when I first got it that there were bigger, fuller books about Skippyjon, and I've since gotten some of them, but this book still rules for her. And I have to admit I've gotten to love it too. Part of it is that it's just fun to say Skippyjon Jones! Another part is the wild pictures---drawn with abandon, and without regard for what color things really are---yellow grass, a purple puddle, etc. The last page, where Skippyjon enjoys the world he has drawn, engages my daughter for a long, long time. I can't say she's really learned colors from this book, but that shouldn't really be the goal of an enjoyable book---you can just read it for fun and to start discussions! It IS hard to tell just what Skippyjon is supposed to be, and that's part of the appeal. Janey calls the Chihuahuas "bunnies" every time, and that's fine with me!

Overall, a book that sneaks into your consciousness and you enjoy the ride!

Reviewed by Cayden (age 3-1/2), Max (age 18-months) Aures and Mom for Reader Views (3/08)

"Skippyjon Jones: Color Crazy" is a non-conventional 12- page board book designed to teach young children their colors. In Skippyjon Jones' world the sun is blue, a bunny is green and a tree is orange.

This was our first Skippyjon Jones book and at first my children did not know what Skippyjon was.

Cayden: "I like him. Is he a bunny?"
Mom: "I think he is a cat with big ears."
Cayden: "Oh yeah, he is!"

Cayden: In response to Skippyjon coloring a big blue sun on the ground: "He's drawing on the carpet??"

Cayden: "Skies aren't pink!"
Mom: "Sometimes when the sun sets they are."

Mom: "Which picture did you like best?"
Cayden: "The one where he is coloring on himself because that is funny!"

Parent's comments:

After the second time reading "Skippyjon Jones: Color Crazy," Max went through and was able to name some of the colors. He did not get into the book as much as Cayden did though. Cayden wanted to take the book and go "read" it by himself and Max did not have any interest in it once we were done reading.

I like how the words for the colors were printed in the corresponding color as this helps preschoolers learn how to read. However, whereas a 4-year-old knows what color certain things are, I think this book may be confusing to a younger child when it is telling them that a puddle is purple.
