Boynton's books were always some of my absolute favorite board books to read to my son (who is now 5) and he really enjoyed them as well. I especially liked Blue Hat, Green Hat and Doggies from this collection. As he got older, I started reading more regular books to him and one day he found his old board books in a box and eagerly went through Blue Hat, Green Hat. He always loved the "oops" :) He never seemed too fond of the A to Z book - there seemed to be a pretty short window for him on when I could read him alphabet books and he liked the Apple Car book better. These books are just the right length to read to a toddler and keep them entertained while giving them just a little bit of education.

It's always story time!

This book became one of our favotites at 4.5 months. My son loves looking at the pictures and hearing the song. We have this and row row row your boat. He chooses these two often when choosing stories, and he's only 6 months. The babies in the book are really cute!

i got this book to complete a 4-for-3 deal, so i wasn't expecting much. however, my 13-month-old daughter and i both love this book! i sang the song while flipping through the pages in the beginning, and now she brings me the book whenever i sing the song. i didn't realize that my daughter could associate songs with specific items until now! don't worry if you don't know the song, because they even included the melody notes on the back cover (of course, that means you need to be able to read music or play an instrument). the book is twice the size of many of my daughter's other board books, but she doesn't seem to have much trouble turning the pages as long as the book is on the floor.

Cute illustrations! But...

If you had any other books in this little series, you'd probably already knew what I found out after I got this book - they're just illustrated children's songs. The illustrations are cuter than anything, but this one starts off with a separate page for "head," then "shoulders," and "knees," etc. but then starts sticking them all on one page. And the last few words of the book are on the back cover. I don't know why they tried to push the song into too few pages (see "Ten Little Fingers (Board Books for Babies)" for what happens when it's done right), but the results were less than stellar. I give it three stars mostly for the illustrations...

I came across this book when my wife found it on the shelf in a local bookshop.

She read it and encouraged our son to stop dancing around the bookstands and concentrate and read it.

Although he prefers video games he loved it.

When I met up with them, he was so enthusiastic that he persuaded me to read it.

My daughter then loved it when she had stopped looking at 'her favourite books' in the store.

We all appreciated the simple humour of the book and the appreciation of the pigeon's point of view - which was a learning point for all of us.

PS my daughter is 18 and my son 16!

We really love this one

The pigeon throws all the standard tricks to get you to let him drive the bus, you say no a lot, he doesn't drive the bus, everybody's happy. (Except the pigeon, but he's easily distracted.)

This is weird to say, but we *especially* like the endpapers. Mo Willems has great endpapers in his books. The front inside cover shows the pigeon daydreaming about driving a bus, and the last one shows him daydreaming about driving a truck, and for some reason this is The Funniest Thing Ever for the nieces.

This book will tend to hype a kid up. Not recommended for naptime, but definitely great for the more fidgety kids, who get distracted at storytime easily. It *demands* audience participation.

This simply phrased, simply illustrated, large-typeface children's picture book has been a hit with pre-readers and early elementary students, alike. In this 40-page, Caldecott Honor tale, less than 20 pages have words (then only one brief phrase or sentence) and the rest are simply-drawn pictures of Pigeon in various stages of frustration and elation. The book's conversational note gives very young children the feeling of being "in charge" of the story's outcome. Willems' Pigeon repeatedly asks early readers to give him permission to drive a bus. Willems, through his inventive artwork and reader-directed phrasing, has strategically given the young reader the authority and desire to answer "no" to Pigeon's requests, (usually aloud!) The book ends when Pigeon has a tantrum from having his bus-driving dreams thwarted by the young reader. He pouts, then notices a semi-tractor trailer sitting empty. He re-directs his dreams to that of driving a big truck, giving young readers both a lesson in not giving up on one's goals, and in understanding that being told "No" is sometimes in their own best interest.

Out of nowhere, my 2 year old started having trouble going to sleep and also waking up during the night. He cried and didn't want us to leave his room. I borrowed a bunch of bedtime stories from the library dealing with going to sleep and being afraid of the dark. We have read "Llama, Llama" every night for about a week now and his fears have subsided. I really think he has identified with the little llama being afraid that his mommy had left him alone in the dark. I even quote the book (we read it last right before bedtime) and remind him that even though mama is not right here, she is near. And he goes to sleep. We are all sleeping again. Now, I have to buy the book :). Thank you, Anna!

My two year old loves this book. Every single night this is what he wants to hear, and I never get tired of this fun, rhyming read. He always asks 'what's that?!' when the Llama is having his tantrum, or when he is scared, so it's also a great book for helping kids understand and verbalize emotions. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with kids who love to read and laugh!

This book was a gift from my mother in law to my daughter shortly after she was born. The first time I read it to her, it moved me so much that I could hardly finish. The story is simple, beautiful and still brings to me tears every time that I read it to my daughter. It is rare to find in someone else's words the complete expression of how much I love her and how happy I am that she was born into our family. The story tells how special the baby was to the world and how the earth celebrated her birth.

The artwork is stunning, the words lyrical, and I can't think of a book that I enjoyed receiving more since my daughter was born. She's not old enough to enjoy it as much as she will later & we have to be careful of the paper pages so they don't rip as she helps me turn them. Regardless of that, it's a wonderful thing to read & express to your baby how special she is to you.

Excellent Book, every child should have!

This book was given to me as a baby shower gift. Many nights before my daughter was born, I would sit in the nursery and read aloud "On the Night You Were Born". This book was one of the most important items packed in my hospital bag and the night our Ava Claire was born, my husband and I read it to her for the first time with tears streaming down our checks. Our Baby is now 7 months old and it still gives me chills. We plan to make it a tradition to read this book at bedtime on each birthday. I also have purchased several books to give to friends since it is such a wonderful gift that I will ALWAYS cherish!

I'm a private math tutor and am using this book as a Friday reward for two sixth grade girls who are studying algebra one with me. It is challenging in some interesting ways. It is full of story problems to be unraveled, about two kids who are detectives. I had given it to my daughter, who was the first year teacher and she said her kids loved it more than any other part of math. They can be solved alone or in groups. I really recommend this book.

I used a couple of these mysteries in my 5th grade classroom. The students enjoyed them because it was different then the way they usually practiced problem solving. The only downside to this book is that I think it is more challenging than the ages suggested. There were only a few stories that were appropriate for my 5th graders and those were still very challenging for them. I wouldn't reccommend this book to someone with a general ed. 4th grade classroom but it is perfect for junior high (6th, 7th, 8th) students!

This is an adorable book. The fact that it teaches manners is an added bonus. To me, the importance is that my two year old granddaughter can "read" it herself. At first I thought she could just give me the answers to the questions and that was cute enough. But then I overheard her "reading" it to her baby doll. What great self confidence this builds in a toddler. It is the best time to start building self esteem and making a child feel "smart".

While I think the book will be terrific in a year to actually teach manners, at this point, my little guy is just entertained by the book. The pictures are simplistically expressive. He giggles every time we get to the second scenario (saying "Excuse me" when burping). He likes the participation of the turning pages. We typically end up reading this book 10 times a day, with my little fellow signing for more as I turn the last page....

What a wonderful world it would be if every child read this book!

My daughter gets so excited about this book - she pays rapt attention, smiles, and wants us to read it again. This book was given to us as a present when she was born - and we have been reading it, among others, since then. For the past few months, this has been a clear favorite book. She loves that at points in the book we give her a big smooch, she is attracted to the colors and illustrations and big letters that indicate you are supposed to be singing those words loudly. We sing the words to this book to her - we don't straight read them - but we do this with other books, too, and she doesn't get nearly as excited. Simple book...my husband and I have others we like more...but this one wins hands down for the baby, and that's what really matters!

This is easily a favorite in our house. we first started reading this to our daughter when she was 9 months old. Since then, she has grown to love it more everyday. She's now 18 months old, and never tires of it. She generally likes all the Boynton books, but this one, she loves.

Here's the gist of the story: a mommy dog is baking cookies with her puppy, and tells him/her a story about how much she loves him. The illustrations are classic Boynton: cute and fun. The rhymes are great. This one isn't as silly as some of her other books, but the sweetness of it makes up for it.

I highly suggest getting the CD that contains the song of "Snuggle Puppy." (I think it's on Philadelphia Chickens...) Once you've learned how the tune goes, you'll love the book even more. And what's even better, is that once you learn the song, you can sing it anywhere. This does wonders for my daughter when she is being uncooperative or grumpy. Whenever I sing her the song, she always smiles, and usually becomes more agreeable.
