This is a cute one. There is emphasis in picking pink hat for her and orange hat for him. Blue boots for her and red boots for him. They use the word "slicker". I just change it to rain coat. Good buy for two year old.

I adore Rosemary Wells and so do my twin toddlers. But I think this is one of those books "inspired by" Rosemary Wells. It is just not as hilarious and unpredictable as some of the other books. My girls like it but I wouldn't put it at the top of my Wells reading list.

Not really Max & Ruby

This book is not representative of thr true Max & Ruby books. Notice that it's "based on the characters of Rosemary Wells" not written by her. It is boring and lacks the true charm and wit of her other books. She has written plenty of excellent stories with great pictures. Skip this one.

Another adorable story. Probably would not be very interesting to older children (over age 3) since it is a short, simple story about basic colors.

My daughters - a preschooler and a toddler - gravitate to Max and Ruby like magnets. The board book Ruby's Rainy Day proved no exception. Shiny foil raindrops splash across the book cover. Lively rainbow colors brighten the ten sturdy pages inside. The story itself is an abridged version of a comical episode on TV's Nickelodeon. Little brother Max wants to go outside to play "Baseball!" Big sister Ruby insists they both don layer after layer of rain gear first. Your child can learn colors while laughing at the antics of these lovable rabbits.

Great Thomas book

Review Date: 2008-07-29
I agree with the other reviewer that this book probably isn't the best for a beginning reader. My two year old loves it as a "read this to me book", and I like it so much more than the Thomas books that are stories from the tv shows (I don't really like the themes in the some of shows--teasing, naughtiness, "you get what's coming to you", etc). I think it would have been even better if it had still photos, that is the best part of the other Thomas books. But regardless this book is very catchy (as any Dr. Suess-type book would be) and it is my favorite Thomas book. It is my toddler's favorite Thomas book too, I think he likes the rhymes. He brings it to me to read as often as he brings me his truck and car books. (He has a few of the Thomas books from the tv show as well and doesn't touch them).

Cute, Colorful Book - a review of "Blue Train, Green Train"

This Bright-and-Early book does not have an Accelerated Reading designation. And while it is described by the publisher as being intended "for an even lower age group" than "Beginner Books", my own Mom-Guessimate for the reading level would be 2nd Grade. I say this because the vocabulary is quite beyond any 'beginner' I've known. Here's an example from one page near the end:

Up peeps the yellow sun!
Green train Percy now is done.
Home now to the Shed.
"Peep, peep"
The Shed is where
Percy can sleep.

Harder words include: clickety, orange, trikes, shadows, clouds, crates, stack, presents, and thick.

Now while all pages do not have as much text as the example above, the vocabulary is fairly consistent in it's difficulty.

Four Stars ::: This is a very nice book that tells the story of two friends who aren't on the same schedule. Percy is taking the mail at night, and Thomas is making his runs during the day.

For babies and toddlers there is a lot to talk about: colors and shapes, animals and things like eggs, bicycles and wagons. Fairly advanced readers could find this good practice if they are still interested in Thomas and Friends. For everyone else, it is a good Read-aloud. We liked the rhyme and colorful artwork. [No still photos from the television show in this book.]

This is exactly the book you'd expect - each page has two animals doing opposite things (one is WEAK, the other STRONG, one talks in a WHISPER, the other in a SHOUT), with only two adjectives per page as the words (so don't expect Boynton's witty banter - the illustrations have to suffice) until the book is over.

Always great!

In many ways, this is just a reprisal of the original book.

Corduroy is out and about, he hears a comment that makes him think is outfit is lacking in some way (this time, he doesn't have a pocket), he goes looking for it, he gets lost and stays the night away from his friend Lisa, he makes a number of naive comments about his situation, he gets found, Lisa helps him with his outfit.

It's not a bad book, it's just not very original.

This adorable story is an all time favorite fantasy. Although at first it seems as if the story is realistic, it's not long before the teddy bear is up walking and talking.

I likeed this book for my daughter. She loves the Corduroy character and identifies well with the book. The same characters from the previous Corduroy series, Lisa, and her mother and new ones like the artist, and the laundromat manager. Corduroy remains the same mischevious bear as he wonders away in search of a pocket. The story line is great for 3+ age group as it teaches children about what what goes on at a laundromat and other social skills like staying near mom or dad.

My 2 1/2 year old adores this book. In fact, I have had to make a rule of no more than twice a day. He calls it the "laundry book". I must disagree about the caged bear scene being frightening. My son specifically requests the caged bear scene and is obviously not scared in the least. It is a sweet tale of a little girl and her little bear. I love how the author uses some big words in a children's book. My son's vocabulary has grown exponentially!

Entertaining-but maybe not for young toddlers

I thought the book was entertaining and cute, and an introduction to what goes on at a laundromat. However, I don't think I would get this book for a young todder (under 4) due to the fact that there was one scene where Corduroy is alone in the dark of laudromat, inside a wired laundry cart, and he looks terrified. The picture is very scary and sad. I think it's too much for a little kid. But overall, it's cute, and the ending is good.

I love this book. I bought this one and Eco Babies Wear Green. I read it to my two-year old son and he loves it. For him the pictures are nice, for me I love the tongue-in-cheek humor. That baby is sooo cool (and his mommy must be too). These are definitely activities I want my son to be interested in. Granted, I do take my son to yoga and I jog with him in the stroller, but I want him to be interested in the other things the baby does in this book such as going to a galleries and eating at nice restaurants (without throwing stuff).

A must-have for today's modern babe!

Moms and Dad won't mind the humor either. When I gave this book to a friend, she had a fit over it - loved it!! I went on to buy several of the others.

I need to talk to the head librarian, and inquire why unbelievably shallow tripe like this is being stocked in our library. "Urban babies wear black" - what sortof narrow thinking spawned something so petty and worthless? It's one thing to teach babies about colors and animals, but to teach children to be shallow?
Awful.

This book by Eric Carle is a simple book that I believe could be used many different ways. You could use this book in weather themes, during a cloud unit, or to stretch the imagination.

You could follow this book with an activity in which your children do their own cloud making, possibly out of cotton balls.

I think that this book is fun and I really enjoy the illustrations. I would definitely suggest having this book as a part of your classroom library.

Little Cloud

Review Date: 2006-10-30
Little Cloud is one of Carle's more recent books. Carle started illustrating and writing books in the late 1960s. Of the Carle books I've read there are only two that I don't enjoy: The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Very Greedy Snake as both are focused so heavily on gluttony.Little Cloud instead teaches through example the importance of being an individual and being a contributing member of a group.

Until the end, each page has a different shape that Little Cloud has created on his own. There's an airplane, a hat, and a variety of other shapes that children will easily recognize. In the end, his hat joins up with the other clouds who have together formed a clown.

I normally love the Eric Carle books. My son usually loves them as well. This book is not my favorite, nor is it my son's favorite. I don't feel this is a good representation of his work.

The pictures are very cute and the idea is very imaginative.

However, the story itself is very clunky and is a bit much for a toddler to sit through. We just look at the pictures and don't try to really read the words.

Wonderful for the imagination!

Right after reading this book just once, my daughter was outside telling me all the different things the clouds looked like! This book really stimulates the imagination. The simple pictures and verse make it a great bed-time book for the little ones. It has quickly become one of my daughter's "must-have" going to bed books.

I was a little disappointed when I opened the book towards the end. The child is supposed to write a sentence in cursive, but the example is written in print. I just feel if a child is learning how to write in cursive, they need to have the written example, especially if they are just learning how to write in cursive. I will still use this book, although I will write the sentence out for our children. This would probably be a good one for a 4ht or 5th grader who just needs extra practice.

I combined this book with Cursive Writing Made Fun & Easy by Kama Einhorn for my 7 year old son. He does really well. We do 2 pages from the the other book and then one page of review from this book and so on. This book can stand alone for anyone who needs more practice. I wouldn't recommend it for teaching unless it's in addition to her other book, but it is a great review and drill practice. Pages are in black and white for reproduction but are creative enough to not bore the student. It even has teacher ideas to help you!

My two-year-old enjoys reading this book. While the book is repetitive, it enables a toddler to "read" along with you and complete the sentences. The book is replete with farm animals, a common feature in children's books, and the web that the spider is building is raised, so children can trace it with their fingers.

Boring and repetitive

Review Date: 2007-08-12
I love Eric Carle's art and several of his other stories, but this one is really boring and repetitive. There's not enough variety to the images, the spider comes across as a real pill who has no interest in other creatures, and the story line is dull. Skip this and go for the chameleon or caterpillar or polar bear.

Just OK

Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby

Eric Carle is a favorite in our house, but this is one of his weaker titles. The illustration of the spider spinning her web barely changes from one page to the next, and there's no clever twist that "makes" the book, like in A Very Hungry Caterpillar. After reading it to our son once, he never seemed interested in looking at it again - but he does ask for Carle's other books often.

Elmo and Big Bird and their friends are getting ready for bed, and showing them all sleeping helps my little girl to accept bedtime a little more readily, since anything Elmo does is automatically cool!

My 22 month old son loves this book. It very sweetly winds him down by saying good night all of his favorite friends as they go to sleep. It starts with Elmo at the park playing and ends with him being tucked in for bed. Therefore the child is able to relate to being awake and playing and is then brought down to falling asleep with all his Sesame Street friends. This is a wonderful book to lull your child to sleep with.

Our 21 month old son loves reading this book, both at bedtime and anytime we are reading together. It starts with Elmo at the park with his Dad, and they head home to get ready for bed. Along the way, Elmo sees different Sesame Street Monsters getting ready for bed by brushing their teeth, jumping on the bed, reading to their teddy bears, etc. Everyone is getting ready for bed, and at the end, it's Elmo who is fast asleep in his bed. This is a wonderful bed time storybook, but note it's paper pages not a boardbook so be careful with toddlers who like to grab pages.
