There are a lot of resources out there on reading and writing informational texts, but this is by far the best. The authors combine research, theory, and really practical strategies that can be used in the classroom tomorrow. It's all here. I got my copy in January and it's already dog-earred! If you buy one resource this year, make it this one.

If you liked "where's spot" you're going to be disappointed by this book. Other than the fact that it features Spot and has flaps.
It is very similar to "spot goes to the farm." Unlike the original "Spot" the plot line is less clear, the answers are less repetitive, and the answers behind the flaps are less concise.
We were so disappointed we returned it.

My 13 month old daughter loves this book (and all the spot flip books). There are flaps to lift on every page, and a cute story to go along with it. Everything is bright, colorful, and interactive for curious little kids. Spot is the best.

This is a cute story, but my 16-mo-old had the flaps ripped off three of the pages LITERALLY within 10 minutes after introducing this book. Even tho it is a board-book construction, the flaps are only paper and not built to last. With so many other titles to choose from, why bother?

The Book is about Spot the dog. In the book he goes to the park and meets some of his friends there. Spot and his friends play with a ball, and while playing with the ball it hits someone, and it also goes into the water. The ball got them into a little trouble, but they now need to get the ball out of the water.
The book teaches you that you need to be careful when playing. The age level is about 2-4 years.

This is amongst my 2 year old son's favorite books, many of which are Spot books. He can recite the entire thing. It's a cute story about Spot meeting his friends, playing with them, losing his ball in the park, and encountering a new friend who is able to retrieve the ball. We love it! Five Stars!

I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful book. This is my 19 month old son's favorite. I found this at a yard sale, and upon seeing it for the first time, my son said "OOOOOOOH!" and started flipping through the pages excitedly. The illustrations are soft and intersting to toddlers and even though it is an alphabet book, the story hold anticipation and facination. We love it!

Wanted to point people to another favorite that's not linked here, called "Hush Little Digger," a version of the lullabye "Hush Little Baby," but all about construction trucks. It's a current favorite and a must for truck-loving kids. Fun to sing aloud!

I got this book for my son who is in love with construction vehicles thinking it would be another way to teach the alphabet. The illustrations are terrific - lots of things to see, name and tell the color of. The story, while it rhymes, uses lots of words, not just the same simple ones over and over. (I didn't know it rhymed until I read it on my own without stopping to comment on every little thing on the page!) My son has since incorporated some of the "big" words from this book into his every day lexicon.

The younger loves the beautiful pictures and singing along. The older loves looking for all the little details in the pictures. They both love substituting the names of the characters for their own friends' names! Both learned their colors through this book without realizing what they were actually doing. This is one book I don't mind reading over and over.

It's too bad the original cover is not printed in this edition. I'm going to pass this one down to my cousin, Adam, whose only 4. Hopefully, we can continue the tradition so this will be his first book he ever learns to read.

This is about 95 full color pages of classroom ideas. Everything from storage to procedures to management. Pictures of actual classrooms are explained with lengthy captions describing how each method or idea is used. I am going to use many of these ideas in my kindergarten classroom so for me it was really helpful and worth the money.

I purchased this book with the idea that it would help me set up my room. As a first year 4th-grade teacher, I needed all the help I could get. While some ideas were useful, the actual classroom setup photos were not, since the author primarily featured classrooms that have enough space for a huge classroom libraries and for amenities like author couches and large rug areas. Unfortunately, when you are teaching in a portable classroom (or as we like to call it -- the trailer park) which are present in most of NYC public schools, space is definitely limited and we don't have luxuries as the featured schools. Some of the featured schools are located in the wealthiest neighborhoods in NYC -- Greenwich Village and Beekman Hill in Manhattan and Park Slope in Brooklyn. So while this book is helpful for those who teach in classrooms with loft-style space, perhaps the author should try to include pictures of classrooms in schools located in Bushwick, Flatbush, Harlem and the South Bronx, where teachers are given rooms that are considerably smaller than the ones portrayed in the book, and where we still manage to teach over 31 students to a class.

I had a couple of the Saxton Freymann books hanging around the house from my teaching days (Dog Food and How Are You Peeling). My 4 year old twins found them one day and loved them. I ordered them Food for Thought for Christmas last year and it is still a highly requested bedtime book. I love looking at the pictures as much as they do! It is amazing how they accomplish this using only food items.

Another picture book from the creative minds of Elffers and Freymann. This one illustrates concepts (shapes and colors, numbers and letters, opposites) with big, bold, and colorful photos of fruits and vegetables carved and combined into expressive faces and adorable animals and scenes. Each page is a new puzzle: H for Hair is easily identified as a leek (you might have to explain 'leek' to a child), root end up, but what are the 'insects'? (blueberries with onionskin wings). The humor may occasionally go over a child's head (look at X for X-ray) but that doesn't matter, he will still love identifying the fruits and vegetables the characters are made of. This is a wonderful book for group reading, children are captivated by the colors and illustrations and the large format makes it easy to see even for the children toward the back of the group. If you've liked others in this series you won't want to miss this one.

My son calls it the sticky tongue book. I like to call it a wonderfully illustrated and educational book for young children. 3d shapes are shown in different colors and patterns and then open up to show a scene of different creatures underneath. A red zig zag ball turns to a family of red zig zag beetles tickling each other and playing, one is eating and one is sleeping. My 2 year old loves the humor in the pictures. He asks to read this book every day.

It's a good thing I love this book, because I've had to read it every day for the past two weeks and there is no end in sight to my son's enthusiasm. Not only is it a good introduction to complex shapes, but the illustrations are phenomenal. The animals are drawn with complex emotions on their faces that are fun to discuss with my child. From bored to exhausted to annoyed to surprised to delighted to perplexed and on and on, with small details in the background that my son loves to look for over and over. This one will be a gift to other children from now on.

We got this book with a bunch of other hand-me-downs, and now I'm planning on getting the others from this author. My daughter is almost a year, and she gets squirmy every time we try to read any book but this one. With this book, she sits still, and looks so intently at the pages, laughing as we open each flap. Every time I say "the end", she signs "more". She could sit and read it over and over. While the shapes are more advanced than a baby will understand, I highly recommend this book for little ones, as well as preschoolers!

I've yet to meet a Richard Scarry book I didn't like. This one is no exception. The story is entertaining; the book has flaps (a big plus w/my son); and the whole book folds out to a train. After reading it, my son likes to unfold the whole train and pretend he's in a train cage. Whatever that is. Too, a good travel book - 8 hour car ride, 4 hour plane ride. Been there, brought this book. No tears.

The storyline is great and a nice idea that the full train opens up displaying each car; but some pages have no flaps on them at all. Lift the flap books are great but need to have more than just a handful of flaps; especially for a R.Scarry book; kids that like those are into detail and to only put a handful of flaps on there kind of shortchanges it.

This book is very entertaining, young children will be fascinated by it. Although it is only nine inches long, it folds out to an eight foot train. The premise is that Bananas Gorilla has lost his bananas and is searching the train for them. Bananas Gorilla goes from car to car, and there are captions at the bottom of the pages describing the search. As a combination of story and advanced manipulatives for young children, there is no question that this book is one of the best.

If you're looking for a great train book or even just a lift the flap book, then be SURE to get this one! It's absolutely adorable! Poor Bananas gorilla has lost his bananas somewhere on the train and he has everyone looking for him. I just love all the little details in the drawing of this book - there's a worm driving a tractor on top of one of the train cars, frogs jumping into a big kettle on another, and so on. You really have to take some time to see all the neat little "extras" that are in this book. It's really not a literary find, but it's great for little ones to see all the neat things that Scarry has hidden throughout the book. It's printed on both sides and it's just wonderful. I'm just glad I found it and I cannot recommend it enough. Great book!
