Yep- it's a keeper. Maisy is just so patient and wonderful, as always. But pushy, impatient Tallulah keeps showing up. What can Maisy do?? Nothing, it seems, cause Tallulah is going to do just what she wants, which is play with Maisy. This one caused some concern for my 3-year old son, who wanted to know if I'd be angry if *his* friend, "a girl with braids" came and took a bath with *him*.

A delight to read, and enticing for toddlers

When my toddler started to show reluctance at taking baths, I found this Maisy book. Now with Maisy's help, she's enjoying bathtime again, and even asks to be read "Maisy Takes a Bath" when it isn't bathtime. The illustrations are simple enough for a toddler to see and understand. It's a little strange that Maisy refers to herself in the third person.

We were given this book as a hand me down in a bag of about 50 others. This is my 22 month old's favorite of them all and I'm here to buy more Maisy books. She can't wait until the end when Tallulah jumps in the tub so she can say "no no!" Last night I had to read it to her 3 times in a row! She loves it but I need some variety! :)

My Daughter's First Maisy Book

If you are the parent of a young child, you probably know who Maisy is. She's a mouse with a duck, a squirrel, an elephant, and a crocodile for friends. Why the crocodile isn't trying to eat the others is beyond me, but that's life in Maisy's world.

Both of my daughters love the Maisy books; there's something about their simple stories and colorful pictures that even appeals to adults. The books are short and easy to read. But, the stories are never obnoxiously simplistic, like so many other books for small children.

This was the first Maisy book we ever bought our oldest daughter. Both of of our daughters still like it as Maisy attempts to take a bath but finds herself interrupted by Tallulah. Not one of my personal favorites, although I really can't explain why. I suspect my children are part fish, so maybe they like it because of that fact and because they love bath time (or any other opportunity to get wet).

My students love Skippyjon Jones! I wasn't sure if they would enjoy board books, since they are kindergarteners who are eager to show how big they are, but they loved it and have read it to themselves and to each other several times.

This is my 22 month old son's favorite book. It teaches concepts such as up and down, back and forth, over and under, near and far, but does it with the adorable kitty boy that Skippyjon Jones is. And we bounce my son up and down with the book. He giggles and carries on. He asks for it again and again. It is a great introduction for babies and toddlers to the adorable character of Schachner's larger books for older children as well as being educational. Now my 22 month old will sit with my 6 year old and listen to most of the other books because of these board books.

I have purchased both Skippyjon Jones Up and Down and Skippyjon Jones Color Crazy and they are both favorites of my 18 month old. They are shorter than the other Skippyjon books which makes them perfect for my toddlers somewhat short attention span. We will be purchasing all of the other Skippyjon books when he gets a little bit older.

My 2-year-old loves the Skippyjon Jones board books. These books definitely seem to be aimed at a younger audience than the other Skippy books, but are a great way to introduce this fun-loving kitty to toddlers and pre-schoolers.

Reviewed by Cayden (age 3-1/2), Max (age 18-months) Aures and Mom for Reader Views (3/08)

"Skippyjon Jones: Up & Down" is a sturdy 12-page board book that explores six different sets of opposites.

Cayden: "Look at the cover! Those things are jumping up and down!"
Max: "Jump! Jump!"
Then they both start jumping up and down.

Cayden: On the page where the cat's tail is big: "Cat's tails aren't supposed to be big!"
Mom: "They sometimes get big when the cat is scared."

Cayden: On the page when the cat is jumping over the chair: "He shouldn't jump over chairs. He will get hurt!"

Parent's comments:

The concepts that "Skippyjon Jones: Up & Down" teaches are great for the younger children and the illustrations are entertaining. I also like that the words that Skippyjon Jones is demonstrating in the illustrations are printed in different colors to help preschoolers who are beginning to read. Cayden enjoyed "reading" the book to Max after I read it to them both a couple of times.

My granddaughter has been crazy about Maisy since she was just one year old. She watches the Maisy videos, knows all the characters, and learns the value of friendships while being entertained. The books are simple and colorful, and many of the same friends and favorite things are found in several books which gives her the pleasure of recurring experiences. She is now almost three and is as fond of Maisy as ever. She has the Maisy doll and chooses that in favor of real looking baby dolls. The big book of words gives her visuals with the word by them so she identifies the word with the picture. This will give her a head start in reading. Before purchasing this product, I wanted to know that it was not too advanced for a three year old. If so, she would not have been ready for it now and the thrill is never the same if the book has to be shelved for a later time.I am very pleased with this selection as it brings happiness to a special little girl.

No child gets bored in this kaleidoscope of colorful objects, animals and people gathered into categories by theme--getting dressed, visiting the farm, making music, or playing on the beach. Each category is introduced with a full-size picture and flap to invite your preschooler into a world bursting with 300 words that are related by theme. Whether your child is at the stage of pointing to hear you label the picture, naming the illustrations or narrating a little sentence, she will delight in this feast of words, all relating to a little one's experience.

As a speech-language specialist at Play on Words, I like to offer tips to build your child's language and pre-literacy skills. Take the time to name the pictures, describe them, "the three swimming ducklings," and talk about how they all belong to a group--things we use on a rainy day, animals in the sea, food in the kitchen, or objects for bath time. Naming the category builds your child's language as she learns to group words by their use or function. Talk about what we do with the items--"We dry off with a towel," or "we wash with soap," or "we float the duck." Talking about the function of objects, helps your child link concepts and builds language skills.

Another fun, colorful Maisy book. This volume is an oversized word primer, filled with about 300 words and illustrations (and a bunch of flaps to open, too!) all in Ms. Cousins' bright, blocky style. The words are organized by theme -- on the farm, at the park, etc. -- and while there's nothing really in the plot department, it's as eyecatching as all Maisy books, and sure to enthrall the littlest readers. This is one of my 2 year old's favourite books. The charming illustrations of objects are grouped in familiar categories so that toddlers can relate the images to their everyday lives. Not only is this book entertaining, but it helps to broaden a toddler's vocabulary quickly. My child delights in showing me how many pictures he recognises - "look mummy there's a....".

Benjamin picks his baby sister up out of her crib, puts her in his knapsack and takes her to school for show and tell. She then wakes up and begins to cry. It is hilarious to watch the flustered adults in charge all try to get her to be quiet. I read this to my kindergarten class, and we all laughed so hard we cried. (If you like Stephanie's Ponytail, you'll like this one, too!) Munsch's dialog is clever, and there is just the right amount of repetition in the story for kids to chime in as it is read aloud. This is a fun book for a child with a new baby at home, too.

Toddler's Bible
I purchased this for my newly turned 2 year old and he loves it! It's perfect with big print, easy words, lots of colorful illustrations and, best of all, short chapters! Each chapter gets straight to the point in language that preschoolers should be able to comprehend easily. This book is a great way to introduce your toddler to the Bible.

If you are looking for a way to introduce your baby or young toddler to the stories of the Bible - look no further! The Toddler's Bible provides an overview of many of the events and concepts in the Bible in very plain, simple language. Because each story is brief (4 pages) it allows the author to communicate the story of the entire Bible in one toddler book - something not usually tackled for this age of reader. This gives opportunity for parents and caregivers to introduce the concept of the Bible as a whole book to the very young child.

There are pictures, colorful and uncomplicated, on every page and occasionally interspersed throughout the writing are questions that encourage interaction with the child. For example, in the section on Creation "...Do you see the moon? Do you see the stars?" and in the section entitled Baby Jesus, "Shhh, Do you see the baby? This is baby Jesus."

Surely not the last book you will buy for the purpose of teaching children about the Bible, but for an introduction, V. Gilbert Beers has done a masterful job!

My daughter loves to smell everything like flowers, food, candles, soap - you name it. When I saw this book was a cute bunny story combined with 6 scratch and sniff stickers, I was sold. Unlike other reviewers I was never lucky enough to know the original book, so I can't say how much it's gone down hill since I was a child. All I can say is that for right now, not 30 years ago, this is one fantastic story.

The scents are all very strong, and they go great with the tale of a bunny spending the day outside "following his nose". My daughter can't get enough of this book. The first time I read it to her I think it blew her mind. She looked at me, smiled and said, "Daddy, why does this book smell good like food?" She made me read it back to back, then she held on to it smelling the pages as I read her other books. I've read it to her every night since.

The only thing that bothers me is that the whole "scratch-and-sniff" sticker and book concept seems so 80s now. It is hard to find any decent books or stickers since this "fad" is now a thing of the past. That is too bad, because this is something most adults still remember and cherish from their childhood.

Brings back great childhood memories!

I remembered this book out-of-the-blue today after not seeing/smelling it for nearly 20 years. This book brought me so much joy as a kid and I loved the novelty of smelling all the different scents while reading the story; made it come alive. I remember the chocolate mint cookie (my favorite!), pine needles, jam, rose, and there were 2 more. I bought it for pure nostalgic value and look forward to sharing it with my friends and see if they remember it too!

There are two pages for each letter. Children can trace both capitol and lower-case letters, then practice making the shapes themselves. They identify the letters when jumbled with similar letters and complete alliterated sentences. It's fantastic for helping with letter formation, recognition and phonetic sounds.

My daughter is three. These worksheets have been a wonderful help to her and fun, too! She loves playing "school". The best part is the free copying!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This is a very helpful workbook. In the beginning of the year, we do them in class. Once the kids get the hang of it, I send it home as H.W. for extra practice...good morning work, also. Many letter writing workbooks available on the market (and pages that come with reading and phonics series) have too many to trace or not enough. This one fits!! Good job, Scholastic!

my mom surprised me with this when she bought the alpha tales boxed set. i was blasting through the roof when i saw the workbook. it is fun because you get a lot of tracing practice for each letter and the stories match the alpha tales books. and you have fun activites too for each letter. my mom made copies so she could use them for my little brother too. the book said she could do that and now if i mess up she can just copy me another page to do. this book has more times of the letter on it to trace than my other writing book so it is more fun. you should get this book. i am now finished with what i want to say about this one. really - stop typing.
