There are a lot of resources out there on reading and writing informational texts, but this is by far the best. The authors combine research, theory, and really practical strategies that can be used in the classroom tomorrow. It's all here. I got my copy in January and it's already dog-earred! If you buy one resource this year, make it this one.

Great Book - Great Story for Toddlers' To Relate To!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-05
I think this was a wonderful book. It's simple to understand that pacifiers are not forever, and there comes a time when one grows bigger and it's time to stop using them. I think this books gets the message across really well, giving a lot of positive compliments to a child when they are ready to try and reach that point that they are now "bigger" and "it's time". I would recommend this book to a parent that will soon work with their child to get rid of their pacifier a head of time, so their child knows at some point, they will stop using it. I would also recommend this book for a child that is now ready to give it up, or one that just has and is having difficulty.

These are great books. We purchased our first book, Picnic with Monet when my daughter was a newborn. She is now 20 months old and she has the Mini Masters Boxed Set (a great deal) and Quiet Time With Cassat. She loves these books! She will bring them to me one-by-one and ask me to read each one over and over. I think she enjoys the lyrical quality of the text as well as the paintings. She loves pointing out the different items in each painting and commenting on what is taking place (playing, sleeping, dancing, etc.) It's interesting that even though some elements in certain paintings are rather abstract, she still knows what she is looking at. I love fine art and grew up seeing many of these paintings, so I'm glad that I can expose my daughter to the Masters in such a fun and positive way.

Love it!

I think this book is one of the best of Julie Merberg's masters series. The art is just gorgeous and every single one contains a child or children, most with a parent, so kids will probably be drawn to this one. My 2 1/2 yr old daughter loves it and loves looking at all the paintings of children. Sweet portraits and great writing! One of my personal favorites.

My 2 year old daughter loves this book (and all the other ones in this series). She will go to her bookshelf at bedtime and pick this one. I like looking at the pictures too! Hopefully when we visit museums in the future she will appreciate the paintings she sees due to the wonderful stories created to accompany the paintings.

It's very simple. A little mouse runs around trying to find his monster, each monster is wrong for some touchy-feely reason.

Very striking, simple pictures, very easy text for little babies and toddlers. Any child is capable of sitting through this one!

I do find that two of the pages stick together, probably because of the texture used on the paws ("bumpy"), and I am continually disappointed that the rough horns aren't very.

But overall, it's a great book in a great series.

These books are such a hit with my son who is now 3 and still loves them. In fact I have just recently bought more of them. We started with That's Not My Car.. and it seems have started an addiction. They are great fun and we take turns picking out which car (monster, puppy, train..etc) we like best. We also look for the mouse on each page. I think these are some of the best toddler books out there and would recommend them highly.

Review Date: 2007-11-28
Once again, Carl and baby are off on an adventure, this time doing all the things that you know your toddler would love to do if let loose in a department store. It's a lot of fun to "read" and the Carl books are great for being stories that even a young child can enjoy by themself because there are so few words. The dress-up scene is especially good.

I think the controversy over whether it is bad role-modeling is just silly. These books explore a child's desire to get to do fun exciting things without her parents' watchful eyes in a safe way. The only thing that bothered me at all was that I think Carl steals a box of dog treats for himself, but it is unclear (they may have been free samples).

The images in this book seem somewhat less polished in places, there are a couple where the baby's face looks positively ugly in comparison with other Carl books. Unfortunately, we got this as a board book instead of full-size. Maybe the full-size version doesn't have those problems. The images are really the whole story, so be sure to buy it at a large enough size to appreciate!

Carl has only one true master ...

I always got the feeling that the "Carl" series was a feeble attempt at obliquely lavishing Satanism onto the minds of young children. Carl's ominous stance and focused, yet glaring control over the toddler seems like a veiled and shadowy attempt at mind control and looks like a deleted scene from one of the Omen films.

Many people have spoken out about this series of books over time and have been shouted down in the process by the militant and frothing fans that associate themselves with this very strange and very suspect material.

Historically, Rottweiler's have been associated as Hell hounds, Demoniacally possessed, guardians of souls, in both film and literature throughout the ages. When the parents relinquish control of their toddlers to "Carl", it comes across, subtly, like it's a passive reference to giving up your child as a sacrifice to Satan, himself.

Drowning your baby and throwing them down into a dark abyss are close to the top of situations that occur in Satanic Ritual Abuse cases nationwide and finding them as dramatic and comical situations in a children's book series leads one to raise an eyebrow and question the true motivations of Alexandra Day. Drowning, burying a child alive and immolation are the three most common occurrences with SRA crimes in America today, pawning them off as children's educational fare is suspect. All of these instances, and more, show up in all of the Alexandra Day books that are currently published.

I first became familiar with "Carl" when I was admiring the artwork while passing a large display conveniently placed in a large walkway at Nordstrom's. The artwork is really fine quality and rivals that of many children's books. But the stories themselves though lead one to only grimace and feel confronted with downright concern. Here are just a sampling of themes and situations that occur throughout the "Carl" series:

1. "Carl" rides away with child on its back, which is reminiscent of illustrations from Dante's Inferno.
2. Toddler falls into a large fish tank, symbolizing a dark baptism.
3. Infant is abandoned in a park and left under the auspicious control of "Carl" to vagabond and live hedonistically.
4. "Carl" locks adults out of a classroom, separating the child from adult supervision.
5. "Carl" leads the unsuspecting child into a burning building to save its offspring and a likely death.
6. "Carl" leads the child to a druggist for an all-to-obvious rendezvous.
7. "Carl" leads child into explicit adult situations with photographic equipment and double-entendre's to bear witness to lascivious deeds.
8. "Carl" takes control of the child during Christ's birthday, avoiding church and leading the baby into a freezing white blizzard, painting a sarcastic analogy of Heaven.
9. "Carl" leads the baby into a dark cellar on his birthday and disappears with the child for an inordinate period of time, only to return looking oddly disheveled.
10. "Carl" attacks three children and mauls a young female toddler on her hindquarters in "Follow Carl". Obvious punishment when you don't "Follow Carl".

The problem with the series is that while the goal might have been to make a cute story out of a Rottweiler and a child, it left more people than not, the dour feeling that something else was going on below the surface of the story and the parallels are all too remarkable.

I recommend this book for anyone having a baby and have other young children. It is realistic, with great pictures, and is simple, easy to understand for a young child. It shows all the things that will happen and things that mommy will have to do with a new baby, even breast feeding, and all the things that a young child can help with. It's great for later conversation with the child. Enjoy!

We've purchased a few books on this subject to prepare our two-year-old for our new baby, and this is the favorite.

The text is very simple and straightforward, keeping mostly clear of emotional descriptions and dialogue. I appreciate this because I don't want to give my son ideas regarding how he should or shouldn't feel about having a new baby in our family. I just wanted something to help prepare him for all of the changes we were going to be experiencing, and this book did exactly that. For example, the story talks about all of the changes in the house, like getting the baby's room ready and getting out all of the baby stuff to get it cleaned and ready, Papa and Granny coming over to visit for awhile to help with the kids, visiting Mommy and the new baby at the hospital, and Mommy and baby being very tired (and needing lots of extra help) when they come home.

The illustrations are darling, and even funny. I liked that it showed a picture of mommy nursing and daddy being tired from all the extra work he's had to do around the house - it made me chuckle a little.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with small children expecting another one. We love it!

This small book has a lot going for it. The storyline is straightforward, the illustrations are funny, and the book doesn't get bogged down in what kids might (or might not) feel toward their new sibling. It also shows mama nursing the baby, which can be difficult to find in children's books. Recommended, especially for families expecting a third child.

Adorable and perfect for getting ready for preschool!

Review Date: 2006-07-11
My 2 year old son loves this book! We started reading a few weeks before preschool began, and it really helped him know what to expect at school. Even after school started, he wants to read it every night and tell us what he does at school that is just like Corduroy, as well as what is different. We've been able to discuss sharing, his teachers, and get more information from him about how he's feeling at school.
The illustrations are vivid and colorful, and there are no errors in the book as the one review stated. The writing is nothing spectacular, but its really more about the story teller's skills when kids are at this age.
One word of caution: the pages are soft, as are the flaps, not like board-based lift-the-flap books. If your child is very rough with things, this could tear pretty easily.

If your child is starting pre-school, this is a great book for showing your little one what to expect because Corduroy and his friends do the same things that your child will do in school -- paint, do puzzles, read, play on the swing set, etc.
Many of the books about going to school have the characters doing other things (like dogs burying bones, ducks going swimming, etc.)

Also, our book does not contain the error that the reviewer below mentions. The colors of the letters in the illustrations match what the text says.

My 21-month-old son enjoys this cute book immensely, but it contains a serious error. The book states that Corduroy makes "a big blue 'B,' and a big green 'C,' but the illustration shows a red (rather than blue) B and a purple (rather than green) C. That is an unforgivable mistake for a book that should be helping children learn to identify colors.

My now 14-month-old daughter has loved this book since we first read it to her at 9 months. She absolutely loves the illustrations, as well as the repetitive nature of the song/book. My daughter now signs the entire song, as do I. I love that she finds signing the song a great comfort, and sometimes signs it over and over as she is falling asleep.

This book is a definite keeper to be loved and cherished. I can't wait to buy the rest of the books in this series! I hope they come out with many, many more.

Fast becoming one of baby's favourites!

"Get your fingers ready to twinkle..."
That's how storytime begins with this book, which will encourage active participation even in babies who aren't signing.
Very cute pictures of babies and helpful captions for parents on the pictures of signs make this a book you will enjoy together again and again.

The series is slightly inconsistent in that only one book - Itsy Bitsy Spider - features a lovely REVIEW of signs on the back page (maybe they had an extra page because that song is short?). I found the review very helpful, and wished the other books in the series had one, too...it gives the baby yet another signing sing-along opportunity!

Still, I think Twinkle Twinkle is her favourite of all these books, and we have had many MANY requests to read it in just the few weeks it's been here.

Recommended for ages 1-2 only, as it's a very basic song that older toddlers will probably not sit still for for long.

This is one of the earlier Berenstain Bear books, and it shows. Despite the cover, the bears on the *inside* of this book are less stylized and cutesy than the bears in the newer books, and the story is an early reader instead of a longer read-aloud.

It's a cute little story about a cub suffering from "grass is greener" syndrome, but unable to decide which hat to get. Eventually he decides his old one is perfect - you saw that coming!

There are only a few words per page, with a basic vocabulary, so this one is perfect little-little ones learning to talk. I do find that many of the words in this book are too uncommon, too long, or follow too odd spelling rules for this book to really function as an early reader. But it's so funny that I don't think that really matters.

My daughter got this book for her first Christmas. I put it on the shelf & forgot about it until she was about 1 when she discovered it for herself. In the almost full year since then, a day has not gone by when this book has not been read -- generally, numerous times (& I'm not sick of it yet). Thankfully I've been able to memorize it -- if she's in the car and cranky, simply reciting the book will calm her down. Such is the power of this great book. She's managed to tear pages but we just tape it together and read it again the next day. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a fun, simple book for their little one.
