As with all of the Corduroy Lift the Flap books (Easter, Christmas, Beach, Halloween, Firehouse, Zoo, Birthday--no longer in print, and Library), this one rates 5 stars......and we own them all! These rate as our absolute favorites in our book collection. The text is not lengthy and the flaps keep my two 1/2 year olds hands busy enough for me to read the text before he is on to the next page. For this reason, they were the only books we read for a long time. The illustrations are fantastic! The story takes you on the course of Corduroy's day-- packing for the beech, finding a spot in the sand, taking a swim, flying a kite, getting ice cream and going on rides on the boardwalk, and looking for treasures in the sand. Enjoy!

This quickly became my favorite Dr. Suess when it first came out. I couldn't find it available everywhere. I then discovered it on Amazon and it's one of my favorite children's gifts. It's not all fluffy, it speaks to every mood and I love the non traditional art work in the book.

I know, I know - you're going "Isn't Seuss already for little kids?" A lot of people think that - that's why they get Green Eggs and Ham for their two year olds.
Unfortunately for them, most of the Seuss canon is for early readers, or even older. These books are too long for babies and toddlers to sit through, and some of them are even a little frightening for more sensitive children (I'm continually perturbed by my five-year-old niece's terror of Horton Hears a Who, but she doesn't like the bullying that goes on there. It's a wonderful book, just not for her).
This book, by contrast, was clearly written with little-little ones in mind. There's a line or two on every page, and most pages are two-page spreads.
Seuss didn't do the illustrations, but I think that they do justice to his work anyway.
Some people are concerned about the color symbolism. (I'm wondering why they pick on the negative connotations of brown and black, but not the connotations of yellow (asian?) and purple (gay?), but that's beside the point.) I don't see this as a problem, especially when each color is illustrated with a different animal in that color, and neither does the (black) father of my two nieces.
But if it is a concern for you, by all means check the book out of the library before purchasing it.
Incidentally, the board book is very sturdily constructed. Not all board books are, but this one has very thick pages, very secure binding - always a good thing :)

This was an Engagement gift! Because life, each day, is colored by many emotions, it was meaningful! When one commits to another, there are bound to be "Many Colored Days". This was wonderful - to offer the young couple! Advice: Help each other through the "dark" days and relish in the BRIGHT ones! It is short and sends a message! Thank you!

This book was given to us as a Christmas present from a friend with a child who is the same age as my son. He was 10 mos when he received it, and now is 14 mos. It took him a while to get into this book, but that is more to do with his nature than the book. He now likes looking at all the colors and when he is in the mood to sit still he likes to hear the lyrical nature of the words. I'm looking forward to using this to help him examine his emotions as he grows. Recommend it for kids age 1 and up.

We love "where's spot." We love the simple plot line, the repetition and the short, concise, predictable answers.
Other than the fact that this book has Spot and flaps, it has nothing in common with the classic "where's spot." For a book with flaps, the plot line is complicated and the answers behind the flaps are long and inconsistent. It barely makes any sense.
We read a lot of books to our daughter, but we read this once and it was so dumb we returned it.
If you love "where's spot" and you're looking for another book like that, don't buy this.

Although `Where's Spot' is my son's absolute favourite book, this did not meet with the same degree of enthusiasm.
That's not to say he doesn't like it, just not as much as `Where's Spot?' ... maybe it's the repetitive text in that one or maybe the novelty value was worn down, but both `Spot goes to the Farm' and `Spot Visits his Grandparents' seem to work as a "side-dish" for him i.e. only good alongside `Where's Spot', though does read both more often than most of his other books.
All in all, I'd say buy this book, but with `Where's Spot?'

Spot the Dog books are a favourite with my girls. They love the simple stories that they can relate to (hiding, baking a cake, playing with others etc) and the lift-the-flaps always bring screams of delight even though we've read them many many times. As they grow I'm sure they'll be one of the books they learn to read with. The words are simple and the font easy to read. Lovely books to cuddle up with your children on your lap. They are also big enough to hold up and read to them as they sit in back seat on car trips.
The best Spot book ever!

My baby and I love this Spot Lift the Flap book. Only this one and Where Is Spot is in this sturdy board addition. The farm animals are so cute! Spot goes out looking for baby animals and finds some pigglets and kittens. My favorite page is Spot in the duck pond looking for Duckling. My baby loves to lift-the-flaps and this book calms her down when she is fussy. One of the all time best baby books on the market to me!

This is such a beautiful little book. My baby got "Haiku Baby" as a present when he was 5 months old. He has been loving it since then. He is now 10 months old and asks us to read this book by picking it up. We enjoy the beautiful illustrations, which name each animal and nature element, and we look for the little bluebird on each page. I highly recommend this book for all babies. It's a great baby shower present, too.

This is a short book, but it is so very sweet. The pictures and the poetry are fabulous. It would be a perfect gift book for a new baby. My 18-month old toddler likes it, but she breezes right through it. When she is learning to read down the road, I would think it would be a great one to re-visit as the haiku is simple to read.

My five year old daughter (and to some extent my 3 y.o. son) is ready for a more advanced book than this one, but before we move on I thought I would say something about this sturdy little book that has been our foundation in Thanksgiving Day preparations for the last four years.
"The Story of Thanksgiving" begins with a question about why we celebrate Thanksgiving. It then goes on to depict how the pilgrims left England to come to America. It shows pictures of sad Pilgrims boarding the Mayflower, followed by a rough ocean (at least by toddler standards) and then the thankful travelers arriving at Plymouth. (They are thankful to be on land again-LOL)
After that the Pilgrims are shown briefly struggling with snow and cold, followed by a more cheerful picture of them planting. With Squanto's arrival they learn new things about the new land of America. Squanto shows them how to plant pumpkins, corn, and squash. And the book ends with a picture of Native Americans and Pilgrims at their feast; followed by a modern family at their feast.
"Thank you, God, for our families, our food, and our homes" the author writes.
Five Stars. A sturdy little book with child friendly artwork. The text is simple and easily understandable without needing many explanations from mom or dad. The religious aspects can be emphasized or not.
Examples of text so you can judge for yourself:
The Pilgrims lived in England.
They could not have their own church,
so they left their homes for a new land far away.
From another page:
The Pilgrims built their homes. Winter came.
Icy winds blew. Snow fell.
There was not much food to eat.

I bought this book as an expansion of my 18-month old daughter's "library". She has adored author's book such as "Where is baby's mommy?" and "Where is baby's bellybutton?" I was hoping that this book would be just as good. Don't get me wrong, my daughter loves lifting the flaps and other interactive aspects of the book. However, each time I read this book to her, I have to change the narrative to come in 3rd person, i.e. "Who's hiding behind the ball? Peek-a-boo! It's a silly baby (girl/boy)" instead of "It's silly you". Even my 18-month old is smart enough to know that the drawings of children in the book are some other children, and not her. When I used the original narrative, she got upset and tried to tell me that she is not in the book, it's some other babies. They say that the concept of "self" comes about at approximately 12-months. So, the book as written would be most useful with 0-12 months age group. For older kids you would have to change the narrative to make the story about someone else, otherwise, they would just get upset.
Also, as is the case with all Karen Katz's books, the flaps come off way too easily when a child pulls on them slightly. I have to use clear tape to attach the flaps back where they belong in all of the books. We already had to buy 3 replacements for the books my daughter enjoys the most. Perhaps it's the publisher's way to ensure constant demand. I found these books at local TJMaxx and Marshall's for $2-$4.

This book is very nice. It's sturdy which is great for busy hands and mouths. The glow in the dark part of it isn't the best, it's hard to see in the dark but they love it. My boys are 10 months old and love the thick cardboard "board" books and they hold up to all that they put their toys and books through. It is a rather small book, but it's perfect to throw in the diaper bag or take with to grandma and grandpas!

my son is two years old. he just loves this book. within a week of reading him this book he knows the words. he'll say fishy? neenee?(thats what he refers to his binky as). in the book the baby asks the animals and his parents where/who has his binky. i highly recomend this book. we also have the blanket book by the same author. another great book.

This is a wonderful book!!!!...the illustrations are incredible, bright, rich and so beautiful to look at. There are only a few words on each page which is really great for the littlest of kids. They'll sit through this one, for sure! This is a must own book!!!
