This is a must give present for any baby shower. I learned of this book from a pre school teacher. The familiar tune with all the consumerism taken out. In its place instead are lessons about teaching your child about the awe in nature and quiet moments bonding with Mommy. I love this book and at 3 years old, my son still insists that I "sing me the song book" to him before he goes to bed. We sing it together before he goes to bed. What a wonderful lullaby to sing your child. Illustrations are a little too "vintage" for me but the lesson is wonderful. My son seems to love the pictures though.

Updated words/lyrics and instead of stressing materialism--"going to buy you a..." it speaks of experiences parent will share with child. So what if it's "mama" in the story. You can (and should!) easily substitute papa. The mama rabbit wears a bathrobe throughout the whole story, so for all your not-yet-reading-baby knows, it's a daddy rabbit wearing a slightly ruffly nightshirt under his bathrobe. This is my favorite gift book to new moms and dads.

Good concept, but still very old-fashioned---I don't know anyone, let alone a mom, who plays a banjo!
"If that lighning bug won't glow, Mama's going to play on her old banjo."
I thought it was going to be more up-to-date. One the plus-side, the board book seems good and sturdy...

We have been struggeling with our 3 1/2yo daughter to get her potty trained. I read the reviews on this book and was quite impressed by the other mother's comments so I said "what the heck". AND for the price I could not beat it. Received the book in a timely fashion. The description of the books condition was very accurate. I would use this seller again. I was not to impressed with the book BUT I gave the book 5 stars because my daughter loved the book. It was read everytime she sat on the potty. In a matter of 3 days she was trained. Praise God!! Finally my last one potty trained. Even though I was not impressed with the book I would recommend it to mother's because for some reason kids just get it.
Another cute potty training book that really doesn't train much.

I gave it three stars because the drawing are cute and at least it's a fun way of getting the message across that when it's time to "go", at least go to the bathroom. However, this book really doesn't deal much with the grim mechanics that all we parents have to teach our children about. Most of the content is about getting the child in the bathroom, but there are only four pages dealing with what the bathroom is all about and exactly what to do there. Another book full of cuteness that puts almost the entire burden of training back on the parent.

My 2-year-old and I think this book is okay. The art work is a little hard to follow for me, although my son doesn't seem to have a hard time. He likes the poetry of it. It isn't a great potty training book, per say, but nevertheless, an okay purchase. One part I don't like is pushing the standing up to pee for boys, I prefer to start him out sitting and progress to that once the actual going in the potty 100% of the time is established.

We love Mo Willems, so I was really excited to buy a potty training book from her series. We were a little disappointed with the content...its a little confusing. It probably would have been better if she made two gender appropriate books as opposed to just one book. However, the sticker chart that is included inside the cover was a big plus. My daughter really looked forward to placing stickers on it each time she used the restroom. If nothing else it was great for the positive reinforcement factor....if you are a little bit crafty, you could probably make your own sticker chart at home and skip the book entirely.

Starting school brings about many new emotions in children. Will You Come Back for Me? by Ann Tompert addresses a child's fear and anxiety about being separated from mom. The child in this story is dispondent after mother leaves and just watches for her return. The mother calms the child and tells her she is leaving her heart with the child and will surely return to her. She crafts a heart for the child to carry with her as a reminder. The child then makes new friends at school, knowing her mother will return. An excellent, feel-good, warm and fuzzy book. I would recommend reading it to any child who is beginning preschool or daycare, or any child who is having trouble separating from mom.

If you are looking for a book about colors, or you are interested in a book that has sliding features, there are plenty of other books out there that are MUCH better than this one. The pictures are nothing special and the quality is terrible. We got this as part of a 4-book box set, and all the books came apart rather easily. My daughter was pulling a slide when it ripped through the page and I was unable to repair it so it could work again. The pages themselves got worn fairly easily as well. Once the slides fall apart and tears the page, the book is pretty worthless. I don't recommend these books. Our local dump now has our copy.

The years haven't been kind to this book. The illustrations are somewhat dated and, judging by the other reviews here on Amazon, there's an angry contingent of parents with abandonment issues who would rather you skip this book for a guide to raise Indigo Children.
I'm just here to review a bedtime book for my two sons.
More than with most books, I really have to act as I read this book to keep their attention. I'm the cow with a nasally Blue Blood voice, I'm the dog with a droopy drawl, and I'm the snort...SNORT!
My boys like this book and we read it regularly at bedtime. Their bookshelf holds roughly 80-100 books and P.D. Eastman occupies two titles in our collection -- A Fish Out of Water and Are You My Mother?

This was one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books when I was little. I am 24 now and I still have my book (and yes its falling apart). I am keeping it to read to my kids someday. Cute story about a baby bird who goes looking for his mother who went out to get some food. He meets all sorts of things along the way and asks them all "Are you my mother?". I saw another review about this book saying that it was "Scarry" and I can't help but roll my eyes. I never once thought the book was scarry when I was little nor did my brother. I am sure your kids will love it as much as so many other generations have. Hey it's Dr. Seuss, you just can't go wrong! :)

Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby
I loved Are You My Mother? as a child, but I wasn't sure how my son would react. His world is filled with Spider-Man and Transformers, so how could a baby bird hold his attention? It turns out my concerns were unfounded. The story of a baby bird looking for Mama is as timeless as they come. My son's brow furrows with worry as the bird approaches a construction site looking for Mama. When the baby and Mama are reunited, my son is content. This story shows that, as bad as things might seem, everything turns out alright in the end - a very reassuring message for young kids.

What a great story. The illustrations perfectly match the simple words. Any book that Mommy can memorize and then recite in the car while the toddler turns the pages is OK with me.
Actually, I'm not the only Mommy I know who has this one memorized -- a friend got stuck in an elevator with little ones and passed the 25 minutes until they were rescued by reciting this story.
It's a great one -- little children understand the determination, the perplexity, the fear, and the contentment of the little bird as he goes on his quest. The drawings are just right. And then the wonderful ending. Ah! How sweet is childhood.
This is a lovely story.

In this oversized, visually pleasing and thoroughly enjoyable tome, the brownie caretaker of the Spiderwick mansion, Thimbletack himself, shares his scrapbook. Each page offers up treasures, such as maps and photos. Many are in the form of separate sheets folded into envelopes, foldouts, pop-ups, riddles to solve, secret objects to find, hidden messages, booklets and similar pleasing gimmicks.
On one spread we learn all about brownies, from the mascot for the St. Louis Browns baseball team to information about our host, Thimbletack. We also read a note of apology to the boggart from Mallory, Jared and Simon Grace. And we get to check out a brownie's wardrobe. Thimbletack includes a self-portrait titled "Common House Brownie" with detailed, not terribly complimentary notes ("Thimbletack has beady black eyes and whiskers like a rodent...") And he makes a point to warn us: "Brownies are a blessing, true, But anger one and pity you."
A spread about Spiderwick House presents a cross-section of the mansion, along with notes about each room. The following pages display a family tree of the Spiderwick clan, along with family photos, letters and journal entries from, to and about everyone who has lived in the mansion.
Thimbletack has also scrapbooked letters, photos, awards, drawings, notes and much more about Jared, Simon, Mallory and Helen. These personal items make the Graces seem even more real than before. A spread warning readers about staying away from the ominous carriage house makes its case with cautionary scraps of journals, newspaper clippings, bits of stories, photos --- and a very cool booklet.
Luckily for us, Thimbletack has not forgotten "the curious fey." The spread explores unicorns, changelings, wyrms, dragons and many more fantastical creatures. We are also treated to detailed pages devoted to information snippets, tales and notes about trolls, goblins and elves. The awful Mulgarath gets his due in a spread devoted to the whims, practices and descriptions of ogres.
You have to love a book that describes its typeface by saying there are so many kinds that the publisher can't remember them all. That sets the tone for a light-hearted, good-humored romp through this scrapbook crammed full of myriad tidbits of information. (There is even a letter from Mallory, Jared and Simon to authors Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi!) For those who have not yet experienced the Spiderwick books, THE CHRONICLES OF SPIDERWICK is quite likely to inspire them to find the series and dive on in. In addition, the short snippets in this scrapbook will encourage reluctant readers.

This is one of the best movie tie in books I have seen yet. Looks just like the Field Guide in the movie. Lots of really nice paintings and lots of hidden pockets with little things in them and envelopes. Just a fascinating book to read and browse. After reading through this book I feel I am fully prepared to see the movie when it premiers next week. Highly recommended.

A charming book with lively illustrations and an unexpected ending! Children will love the animals and rhyming text and will instantly relate to the young girl and her beloved friends.

The central character is a spunky imaginative girl with diverse interests ranging from playing in the mud, dancing, and playing doctor to having tea-parties and playing dress-up. She wears comfy jeans and other non-pink clothes throughout most of it, and even her pajamas are not pink. My daughter really enjoyed the rhyming, lyrical text, and the bedtime theme makes it perfect for pre-bed reading. We started reading it at about 12 months I think and it is only recently (she's now 2.5 yo) that it seems to be losing ground as one of her "must-read every night" books.

We have had this for almost 2 years now, and it is definitely a favorite. Our son is now 2 1/2 and still loves it. It is such a cute book! The illustrations are great, and the text is very rhythmic and flows well. When we go to the zoo, we recite the different rhymes when we see the appropriate animal ("I know a hippo and when she's not busy, we spin round and round until we get dizzy."). We have given it as a gift and I recommend it to everyone. Get this book!

This was liked by my son but my 2 year old daughter absolutely LOVES it. She has memorized all the rhymes and I hear her "reading" it to her animals after lights out. Any kid with a crib full of animal friends can relate to this charming story. And like all GOOD toddler books, it ends with SLEEP.

My son just turned 2 and is starting to show an interest in potty training, so I got several books for him...this one is definitely his favorite. He loves the real-life photographs (not just drawings)...I think it's easier for him to connect with. He also gets a kick out of seeing the teddy bear use the potty too. The text is nice (a lot of rhyming), though some of the words are too sophisticated for him...he doesn't seem to mind. We love that this is a boardbook, since he's still a bit rough on regular paper pages! Highly recommended.

I have two children of potty training age...a boy and a girl. I bought both versions and they are both pretty much useless. Neither one of my kids are intersted in the book...there is no storyline or cute characters. It is more of an encyclopedia of potty. Not really worth buying in my opinion.
