This is a great book for toddlers - and their art loving mummies and daddies!
My 15 month old girl absolutely loves this book. I bought this for her first birthday and we've read it every day since. And she still gets excited about it every time!
The quirky illustrations are fantastic and the text flows very nicely.
A must read!

I was very excited to find this book for my child. I love Andy Warhol myself so I figured I'd enjoy it too. My kid LOVES it. The pics are great, with just a little bit of writing. It's also made with hard pages so it's difficult to distroy. We've read it over and over and it's still a big hit.

I love this book for it's obviously quirky illustrations of colors. Really cute, small book, perfect for my toddler who adores it. A nice change from the usual color board books on the market.

Great way for toddlers to learn shapes!

I definitely recommend this board book... it is simple and to the point with one shape per page. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the pull out tabs are annoying for my 19 month old since it takes a little tugging for the tabs to come out... she gets frustrated at times and ends up crying. Had I realized that this would be the case, I would have never introduced her to the tabs. In any case, I still recommend this book.

We keep this one in the car. My grandson loves sliding the different shapes & he's only a one year old. Small enough for little hands, but very sturdy cardboard.

My first experience with this book occurred 6 years ago. It is not only great for babies, but for toddlers, and more durable than other similar "lift-the-flap" books. It is concept and word appropriate text for very small children. Since then, I have purchased it for numerous friends for baby showers. My own children have loved this book so much we had to go buy a 2nd copy. It is a great book to use for children between 6 - 24 months, especially great to tuck into the "church" bag or other places and activities where children need to sit quietly when they need something to capture their attention. We also have the other books in the series (which are also very well put together - Shapes, Opposites, Numbers), but this is my personal favorite.

My son likes it for the pull out tabs that reveal a drawing of an object that illustrates the shape drawn on the page. The shapes included are: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, heart and diamond. While the illustrations are as simple and straightforward as the limited vocabulary used in this book, they are still beautifully drawn. Rather that use solid colors for the shapes, each one has a subtle gradient to give it more pop. The real world objects are drawn in greater detail than the shapes so that they stand out. The illustrations included are: a tricycle, a quilt, a watermelon, a triangle instrument, a valentine and a kite.

I like that the book throws in some words that my son doesn't know straight away to give him something new to work on. He has learned "quilt" and "valentine" while reading this book to me.

Sturdy and Fun

We have been struggeling with our 3 1/2yo daughter to get her potty trained. I read the reviews on this book and was quite impressed by the other mother's comments so I said "what the heck". AND for the price I could not beat it. Received the book in a timely fashion. The description of the books condition was very accurate. I would use this seller again. I was not to impressed with the book BUT I gave the book 5 stars because my daughter loved the book. It was read everytime she sat on the potty. In a matter of 3 days she was trained. Praise God!! Finally my last one potty trained. Even though I was not impressed with the book I would recommend it to mother's because for some reason kids just get it.

Another cute potty training book that really doesn't train much.

I gave it three stars because the drawing are cute and at least it's a fun way of getting the message across that when it's time to "go", at least go to the bathroom. However, this book really doesn't deal much with the grim mechanics that all we parents have to teach our children about. Most of the content is about getting the child in the bathroom, but there are only four pages dealing with what the bathroom is all about and exactly what to do there. Another book full of cuteness that puts almost the entire burden of training back on the parent.

My 2-year-old and I think this book is okay. The art work is a little hard to follow for me, although my son doesn't seem to have a hard time. He likes the poetry of it. It isn't a great potty training book, per say, but nevertheless, an okay purchase. One part I don't like is pushing the standing up to pee for boys, I prefer to start him out sitting and progress to that once the actual going in the potty 100% of the time is established.

We love Mo Willems, so I was really excited to buy a potty training book from her series. We were a little disappointed with the content...its a little confusing. It probably would have been better if she made two gender appropriate books as opposed to just one book. However, the sticker chart that is included inside the cover was a big plus. My daughter really looked forward to placing stickers on it each time she used the restroom. If nothing else it was great for the positive reinforcement factor....if you are a little bit crafty, you could probably make your own sticker chart at home and skip the book entirely.

I'd never read this book before it was given to my son as a gift when he was about one. It soon became his favorite book! He loved the pictures of the babies and the simple text that accompanied them. The overall message of the book, I thought, was lovely -- all babies like to be hugged and kissed and cuddled and loved.

I have loved this book for years. My niece had several Fujikawa books that were recently handed down to my daughter. The hand-me-down copy of Babies (printed in 1980) was getting torn up so I ordered a new one to replace it. The new copy is missing 6 pages. My daughter is 19 months old and flips back and forth saying "grow, grow" looking for pages that are not there. Everything else is the same. This is still a beautiful book but I'm very dissapointed that this new version is missing pages...and so is my daughter.
Should have read the reviews before buying this reprint (printed in 2006).

This is one of a series of fun, musical books. Not your normal children's picture book but one that the adults won't get tired of listening to. The author has captured the thrill of music from a child's perspective. My kids find it very entertaining and try to do the Shooby-doo-do-bops in time with Ella. Always on the lookout for books I like also this one hits the mark B-I-G Time. Kids of all ages will enjoy Ella the Elephant a she scats her way into their hearts.

Big winner for my 2 and 4 year old.

We already own the Charlie Bird CD which they like.

They love this one. It is very very funky fun music that adults can listen to and enjoy as well which is not the case for a lot of children's music out there as most parents know.

There's maybe 12 songs or so on the CD and 8 will be huge hits with your kids. The only minor thing I can say is the book that it comes with is mostly useless -- it's not really a book. These guys should save the money and charge even less -- not that the price isn't more than fair. But definitely a great CD if you even like jazz a little bit.

A hit!

This series is wonderful! Our two-year-old absolutely loves the Baby Loves Jazz series. We bought a few to start out, then ended up buying the whole set. Two months after acquiring them, she is still enamored and requests to listen to them and read them every day. Her favorites? Well, these are the words we hear most often: "Mommy, read Duck and Miles?" or "Daddy, listen to Duck and Miles?" Philly Joe is also high on the list. I recommend them all. The books stand out on their own, but the music is what makes this series really shine. For example, on Duck Ellington's CD, he does a great Monk style on one track, then switches to great impression of Coltrane's classic quartet on the next track, with a very nice McCoy Tyner impression. Lots of variety and high quality make this series worthwhile (though I could have done without Louis Lion's potty tune). Don't forget the Go Baby Go CD as well (a stand-alone CD without a book), which is perhaps a notch above the music on the book CDs. The ABC tune is her favorite on that one.

Our 17-month old always asks for Ella the Elephant music. She's completely entertained by it. My only complaint is that the book has minimal use, as there's not much to point out for an entire song on two pages.

My two-year-old enjoys reading this book. While the book is repetitive, it enables a toddler to "read" along with you and complete the sentences. The book is replete with farm animals, a common feature in children's books, and the web that the spider is building is raised, so children can trace it with their fingers.

Boring and repetitive

Review Date: 2007-08-13
I love Eric Carle's art and several of his other stories, but this one is really boring and repetitive. There's not enough variety to the images, the spider comes across as a real pill who has no interest in other creatures, and the story line is dull. Skip this and go for the chameleon or caterpillar or polar bear.

Not so great.

Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby

Eric Carle is a favorite in our house, but this is one of his weaker titles. The illustration of the spider spinning her web barely changes from one page to the next, and there's no clever twist that "makes" the book, like in A Very Hungry Caterpillar. After reading it to our son once, he never seemed interested in looking at it again - but he does ask for Carle's other books often.

I love this book it is vey funny and I like how it show how things are so big to bird and a mouse. In a People House is a great book to read to your kids all of it's pages have bright colors and they did a good jod to make it look like how it would look to a mouse. To me the best part was in the end when they stack up all of the stuff and then it crashes and the people chase them out.

The book "In a People House" is a great children's book that has all sorts of literary terms used in the book. It shows some rhyming, alliteration, and other assortments of speech. The book itself is a joy to read with yourself or with others. The rhyming is pretty fun to sound out, and I myself can say that it was nice to look back on the classical readings of 'Dr. Seuss.'

This book is listed as being for ages 2-5. It's too painful to read this garbage to my child. Author should try again, maybe next time with something that resembles a coherent story. Couldn't hold the interest of a 2 year old, let alone a 5 year old. Very frustrating.

Peter Catalanotto's IVAN THE TERRIER brings a breath of fresh air to the multiplicity of fractured fairy tales that dot the landscape of children's literature. This deceptively simple story is a treasure trove for all, children, parents, teachers, and dog lovers everywhere. The joyful, interactive text is seamlessly synthesized with beautiful paintings that are filled with visual clues as the story unfolds. Ivan, a feisty Jack Russell, demands his own story by consistently interrupting the narrator's attempt to tell traditional fairy tales. Ivan's antics to stop the stories always elicits laughter and cheers from children of all ages. But alas when he finally achieves his goal, Ivan is too tired to care. The final page shows him trundling off to bed. Children easily identify with Ivan and they instinctively know he'll try again. IVAN THE TERRIER appeals to children on many levels: it is a laugh out loud story, the art is beautiful and filled with new discoveries on each viewing, and
every child has faced frustration trying to make his/her wishes known.
As a children's librarian who works in classrooms regularly, I have used this book with Head Start, elementary and middle school children, as well as with educators. It is always a crowd pleaser, but it is also an excellent book for older children to use as a jumping off point for writing their own fractured fairy tales, and for even older children, the ending is a classic way of explaining the concept of irony.
IVAN THE TERRIER is a treasure for children to read and read again, and a treasure trove for educators of older children. Peter Catalanotto has created a book that should become a classic.

My duaghter just loves this book. She doesn't totally get it because she only knows one of the bedtime tales that Ivan interrupts so far (the three bears) but she thinks the others are funny, all the same. It is a book she will grow with, as she learns the other stories. She loves to anticipate what will happen on the next page, and joins in scolding Ivan. We have fun reading it with her. When she isn't reading it, she still brings up Ivan's antics in conversation. As for me, I love the illustrations.
