My 2.5 year old daughter loves this book. It doesn't hurt that she's very into princesses. The little princess is adorable and all the names her family calls her are so cute. The artwork is precious. This is one I'll hold onto along with all our Karen Katz books. They are great!

This baby does not want to called Cupcake or Little Lamb or Sweet Gumdrop. She wants to be addressed with her proper title, Princess Baby! When her parents understand, at last, all is well.

Princess Baby wears sparkling gold shoes and a glittering crown. Bright patterns make up the illustrations which are influenced, no doubt by Katz's interest in textiles.

The love the parents feel for their "princess" is reassuring and heart-felt as the family embraces on the final page. If you know a family with a new baby girl, this is the book for them.

Poor baby! She's been called everything: Cupcake, Buttercup, Little Lamb, and even Sweet Gumdrop.

Hasn't anyone noticed her shiny crown, fancy dress, sparkly shoes, velvet cape, glittery jewels, or royal wand? What will it take for her parents to call her by her real name, Princess Baby?

Toddlers will be enchanted by the feel of the glittery, sparkly crown on the cover of PRINCESS BABY, and will find a reason to giggle as baby tries to set things right where her name is concerned.

Beginning readers will have no trouble with the easy text, and will have a fun time reading this alone or having it read to them as a bedtime story.

I bought this book as an expansion of my 18-month old daughter's "library". She has adored author's book such as "Where is baby's mommy?" and "Where is baby's bellybutton?" I was hoping that this book would be just as good. Don't get me wrong, my daughter loves lifting the flaps and other interactive aspects of the book. However, each time I read this book to her, I have to change the narrative to come in 3rd person, i.e. "Who's hiding behind the ball? Peek-a-boo! It's a silly baby (girl/boy)" instead of "It's silly you". Even my 18-month old is smart enough to know that the drawings of children in the book are some other children, and not her. When I used the original narrative, she got upset and tried to tell me that she is not in the book, it's some other babies. They say that the concept of "self" comes about at approximately 12-months. So, the book as written would be most useful with 0-12 months age group. For older kids you would have to change the narrative to make the story about someone else, otherwise, they would just get upset.

Also, as is the case with all Karen Katz's books, the flaps come off way too easily when a child pulls on them slightly. I have to use clear tape to attach the flaps back where they belong in all of the books. We already had to buy 3 replacements for the books my daughter enjoys the most. Perhaps it's the publisher's way to ensure constant demand. I found these books at local TJMaxx and Marshall's for $2-$4.

This book is great to make moving to a new house, school, or city easier. It isn't one that we read again and again but it did give a great opening for conversations of topics related to the move. It is one that I will share with friends when moving. But I've never found a Usborne book that wasn't super.

Wonderful pictures, simple story - great for preschoolers

We purchased this book to assist our son, who is almost 3, with our upcoming overseas move. While this book is not geared towards overseas moves, the pictures of the parents sorting their belongings, items going into a moving truck, and items being unloaded into a new home are wonderful. Our son has requested that we read this book many times -- it is in his "favorites" rotation.

I use this book often (I'm an Early Intervention Teacher), to help families teach their young children (ages 0-3)to wear glasses. I also place a real eyepatch over the eye of some of the pictures for those children who are learning to wear eye patch for Amblyopia - to help normalize a sometimes scarey or confusing experience. I recommend this book to all the families!

This is one of my daughter's favorite books. When she was about 7 months old, we introduced it to her and each page still causes her to give us the biggest grins! All new parents should own this book. The funny thing is, she actually seems to like it even more the the Baby Faces book by the same author.

This book was one of my first son's favorites - it was so tattered I was afraid to put it in #2's crib for fear he'd bite off a piece! Well, #2 has discovered it at 15 months, and no other book will do (except sometimes "Go dogs go".) We read it over and over and over. And over. I just logged on today to find more books by this author. (I don't know if this book can take partial credit, but my first son was most precocious with his color words!)

My 4.5 year old pre-kindergarten girls loved this book. It was a great compliment to the week they spent exploring the five senses at school. I can see using this book repeatedly for several years to come.

This is a wonderful book for beginning readers that will introduce then to the concept of our five senses and how they make us aware of the world around us when used one at a time or in combinations.

Scientific concepts are simply explained for kindergarten or preschool children, who will most certainly be entranced by the lively illustrations.

This is the perfect book for reading to kids, and for kids to begin to learn to read. It is very well thought out, covers an excellent topic, has a seamless match between the words and the illustrations, and has a generous amount of repetition to learn the five senses. I like reading it to my kids, and my oldest spends some time reading it to herself and has some of the pages memorized.

Straightforward, engaging introduction to the 5 senses

My 5 year old son absolutely adores this book. He asks me to read it repeatedly, and has fun pointing out when he's using his senses just like the (adorably illustrated) child in Aliki's book does. It's a lively, fun introduction to an important scientific concept.

I like goats. They are good people, I mean pets. I mean that they are americans, like sheep. I like to refresh my memory about goats, that is why I bought this book. It helped me remember my fun visit with some little boys and girls where I told them about my pet who was a goat. I liked the story, especially the pictures.

If you know how to pronounce the Spanish words correctly, this is a great book for toddlers. I've used it with my Toddler Spanish classes, and even my 4-7 year olds as they are learning to form their own opinions and original sentences in Spanish. I love the simplistic, yet BRIGHT pictures and how wonderfully sturdy the slick pages are.

Use this along with Flip Flop Spanish workbook, and you've got a great combo!

Great Spanish/English Series

Raising a multilingual child is difficult particularly in our mono-lingual culture. It is all too easy to resort to the English default. As a parent I have to make an extra conscious effort to speak Spanish to my daughter and familiarize her ear with the sounds she will hopefully use one day. In this regard bi-lingual books have been essential in helping me to set aside Spanish-time. I have read this series of board books by Rebecca Emberley to my daughter since she was 3-months old and they are still among her favorites at 15 months. These books are ideal for interacting with your baby and toddler in a multilingual fashion. The illustrations are bright and colorful and the pages withstand repeated vigorous turning by little hands. Each page presents a single word in English and Spanish for added comprehension, yet ideal for short attention spans. Thank you for a wonderful series.

My now 14-month-old daughter has loved this book since we first read it to her at 9 months. She absolutely loves the illustrations, as well as the repetitive nature of the song/book. My daughter now signs the entire song, as do I. I love that she finds signing the song a great comfort, and sometimes signs it over and over as she is falling asleep.

This book is a definite keeper to be loved and cherished. I can't wait to buy the rest of the books in this series! I hope they come out with many, many more.

Fast becoming one of baby's favourites!

"Get your fingers ready to twinkle..."
That's how storytime begins with this book, which will encourage active participation even in babies who aren't signing.
Very cute pictures of babies and helpful captions for parents on the pictures of signs make this a book you will enjoy together again and again.

The series is slightly inconsistent in that only one book - Itsy Bitsy Spider - features a lovely REVIEW of signs on the back page (maybe they had an extra page because that song is short?). I found the review very helpful, and wished the other books in the series had one, too...it gives the baby yet another signing sing-along opportunity!

Still, I think Twinkle Twinkle is her favourite of all these books, and we have had many MANY requests to read it in just the few weeks it's been here.

Recommended for ages 1-2 only, as it's a very basic song that older toddlers will probably not sit still for for long.

I Love It When We Read Together

Review Date: 2008-08-25
My daughter has had her copy of I LIKE IT WHEN..., by Mary Murphy, for nearly two years. Even thought it is geared toward babies and toddlers, my 3 year old still finds this book very enjoyable and very comforting. It is still a good book to fall asleep to.

I LIKE IT WHEN...is a series of interactions between a young penguin and an adult caregiver. With no names or defining details, the penguin pair can be mother/child, father/child, grandparent/grandchild, older sibling/new baby. The only requirement for the type of relationship displayed is love. Beginning with " I like it when you hold my hand" and "I like it when you read me stories," continuing on to "I like it when you hug me tight," and "I like it when we dance around," and ending with a big "I love you," I LIKE IT WHEN...models simple intimacies so important to a growing child. The illustrations are simple, cute, and colorful, and the message is reassuring, endearing, simple, and clear.

Even though we both have I LIKE IT WHEN...memorized, my daughter still wants me to read it to her page by page, so that we can act out each interaction. Each page demonstrates a very special one-on-one communication between adult and child; something that all kids find fundamentally necessary in their young lives. This book basically just makes my daughter feel happy and loved. And that makes me happy, too.

My homeschooled daughter really likes this book (she's in 2nd grade). When we received it, she did 20 pages in one sitting. I had to ask her to save some pages for later :) It states a rule, then has a few pages of different activities for each rule. For homeschooled kid, you can do more per day. For kid that attends a public school, the activities on each page are short enough to be enjoyable. This book came with CD that has a pdf file of this whole book, so you can redo some lessons by printing them later again.

I love this book. It has a section that explains the grammar/punctuation rule, then a number of pages to reinforce the lesson. The examples are quite clear and the rules broken down into the basics. Great for us homeschoolers and terrific for traditional students who just want reinforcement or review.
