This quickly became my favorite Dr. Suess when it first came out. I couldn't find it available everywhere. I then discovered it on Amazon and it's one of my favorite children's gifts. It's not all fluffy, it speaks to every mood and I love the non traditional art work in the book.

One of the few Seuss books that is actually suited for babies

I know, I know - you're going "Isn't Seuss already for little kids?" A lot of people think that - that's why they get Green Eggs and Ham for their two year olds.

Unfortunately for them, most of the Seuss canon is for early readers, or even older. These books are too long for babies and toddlers to sit through, and some of them are even a little frightening for more sensitive children (I'm continually perturbed by my five-year-old niece's terror of Horton Hears a Who, but she doesn't like the bullying that goes on there. It's a wonderful book, just not for her).

This book, by contrast, was clearly written with little-little ones in mind. There's a line or two on every page, and most pages are two-page spreads.

Seuss didn't do the illustrations, but I think that they do justice to his work anyway.

Some people are concerned about the color symbolism. (I'm wondering why they pick on the negative connotations of brown and black, but not the connotations of yellow (asian?) and purple (gay?), but that's beside the point.) I don't see this as a problem, especially when each color is illustrated with a different animal in that color, and neither does the (black) father of my two nieces.

But if it is a concern for you, by all means check the book out of the library before purchasing it.

Incidentally, the board book is very sturdily constructed. Not all board books are, but this one has very thick pages, very secure binding - always a good thing :)

This was an Engagement gift! Because life, each day, is colored by many emotions, it was meaningful! When one commits to another, there are bound to be "Many Colored Days". This was wonderful - to offer the young couple! Advice: Help each other through the "dark" days and relish in the BRIGHT ones! It is short and sends a message! Thank you!

This book was given to us as a Christmas present from a friend with a child who is the same age as my son. He was 10 mos when he received it, and now is 14 mos. It took him a while to get into this book, but that is more to do with his nature than the book. He now likes looking at all the colors and when he is in the mood to sit still he likes to hear the lyrical nature of the words. I'm looking forward to using this to help him examine his emotions as he grows. Recommend it for kids age 1 and up.

The book is great, but the cover came ripped. I know it's hard to keep it from ripping because of the cutouts but it's discouraging to get a brand new book where the cover is already ripped.

This is my baby boys favorite book...nice bright colors which really hold his attention. He LOVES it when I pull out the Elmo book and is not too interested in some of the other bathtub books with softer colors.

This book is six sentences long. I'm not looking for War and Peace, but six sentences? My son (12 months) has no interest in the the artwork or story, and the only value to me is that I know I can now have a career as a children's author with the bar this low. If you haven't bought Water, Water Everywhere (Baby Einstein), buy it and skip this waste of money.

I don't think many modern readers will pick up the Little Golden Books because of their great plots, since they don't have any. The story's OK and nothing really happens. The artwork is top notch, though, and that's the real reason to give these a look. I was also overcome with the urge to say "That's MISTER Dog to you!" when looking at the cover.

I loved it then, I love it now!

I adored this book as a child, and so did all of my family. I can still remember asking my mom, "What's a conservative?"
It continues to delight all of us. I'm 56, my mom is 84, my brother is 54. I just finished reading my brother's copy aloud to the three of us and we were all as charmed by it as we were 50 years ago.
Margaret Wise Brown's writing and Garth Williams's illustration make this an enduring classic. I'm glad I was reminded of it in time to send a copy to each of my own grandchildren and their parents.

My brother and I loved this book.

I, too, have looked everywhere for this book. My brother and I, both now out of college, still remember this being our favorite book when we were little. Our parents hated it because we made them read it to us every night. It's such a simple story about a boy and a dog who find each other and go home to eat a "green vegetable" together and go to bed, but it's captivating. I recommend it to any and all parents of young children.

Mister Dog Puffs Along

One of the biggest differences between children's books of today and those from a half century before is the presence of pipes. In the 1940s, shorthand for "father" was "the fellow smoking a pipe." Today that distinction is woefully absent. Mister Dog, while not a father himself, does take a paternal role with a wayward boy, in some way justifying the fact that on nearly every page his smoldering corn cob juts jauntily from his furry lips. True, in one frame a bunny has taken over the duties of smoking, but this is just in good fun. The true strength of the book is its illustrations. Garth Williams, illustrator of so many stories, is splendid. His cats, those Mr. Dog frolics with while on a walk, made my daughter laugh aloud. The story itself, frankly, is pretty dippy. Dated and occasionally odd, the pictures invite parents to come up with a narrative of their own.

We love Crispin's Crispian!

I knew this would be a good book, when I saw it was written by Margaret Wise Brown. It proved to be true. I immediately fell in love with Crispin's Crispian, and his little home and life. The illustrations are charming. The story tugs at your heart upon seeing a little boy all by himself, fishing.... But you have to read the rest to see what happens. Don't go into this story with too much of an analytical mindset. It is just a wonderful children's story, that will be read again and again.
It would make a wonderful bed time story, as it is happy and magical in a way. It definitely has an old fashioned sweetness that I just love. I am just thrilled that Golden Books have decided to release some of their old classics. I was starting to worry their for some time, when I had a hard time finding Golden Books like these in the stores. I loved it, and would highly recommend it.

We borrowed this book from the library for my 3 year old son. We had to check it out 2 months in a row because he couldn't part with it. So I am buying one of his very own. He loves the rhyme and you will too! It is one you will find yourself saying over and over in your head so beware. But everytime we see a railroad track he begins reciting it...."I Saw an Ant on the Railroad Track". Very cute book!

My three year old son is a train fanatic. We found this book at the library, and he loved it so much we had to buy it. The story is actually really sweet in that it supports that all things in nature are important-even a little ant. The story has a nice rhyme to it and the vocabulary used is great. Your little one will definitely requeset this one over and over.

Love this little book. We received it as a gift from a crazy aunt (ant/aunt...). My 3 year old practically has it memorized. To hear him quote the book ("oh ruin to wrack" whenever he drops a toy or doesn't get what he wants) is just hillarious.

We started our collection with 'not my Kitty' and 'not my puppy', we added 'not my bunny' at Christmas time, my 18 month old LOVES these books, she brings them to us to read to her and will also sit and 'read' them solo, we've invested in 6 more. Another great book, not by the same author is 'Tails'.

Fuzzy, Fluffy, Squashy Fun

Review Date: 2005-09-13
Our twin babies are enjoying these "That's Not My..." books. These are more engaging than some of the other touchy-feely books we've got. Some books put materials in the pages for the babies to touch, just for the sake of having them there - and the words don't seem to "match up" with the thing we're feeling, or they are so stretched for material that it barely makes sense what we're feeling. Many of the "touchy-feely" books simply lack story content. That's not true of these Usborne touchy-feelies. The text is simple and makes sense to toddlers, and gives them a wider vocabulary of adjectives -- especially "tactile" words, like "fuzzy," "fluffy," "shiny," "hairy," and even (in "That's Not My Teddy"), "squashy!"

For bigger babies (my babies are just one year old), it's neat to notice a cute little mouse who shows up on every page. That's one thing I love about Usborne baby books - even when the babies are tired of looking at the main story, there's always the cute little mouse to notice and talk about!

I bought this book for my daughter for her 1st Easter when she was almost 11 months old. She loves to rub her fingers over the parts of the bunny as I read and will turn the pages when she's done. This is her favorite book to read before bedtime and usually takes it to bed! It's a very cute book and this one and the others in the series are sure to be every baby's favorite!

The book called By the Sea is funny. It was written by Stan and Jan Berenstain. This book is funny because it describes my family in a few ways. First they go on vacation every year, so do we. Next, Mother bear says clean up before having fun. My mother would say that. This book is funny because it seems like all mama and papa bear wanted to do is wait and have fun with their kids. I don't have a favorite character because everyone in the book is my favorite. There are so many books about the berenstain Bears so go out and read them because they are funny and caring.

In "The Berenstain Bears by the Sea," co-authors Stan and Jan Berenstain take Mom, Dad, and the two cubs to a vacation by the seashore. The cartoony illustrations of the humanoid bears are visually delightful, and the easy-to-read text is great for younger readers.

Although this book is meant for an audience of young children, I must admit that, as an adult reader, I found it quite enjoyable. How can you resist lines like "May we? May we? / May we, please, / dip our tootsies / in the seas?"

This book portrays a family that genuinely enjoys spending time together. And it even teaches a lesson in the virtue of patience. This Bears romp is a great choice for the beginning reader.

I just love Fisher Price. They have so many fun things to pick from. One of my favorite things is the 'lift the flap' books. My grandchildren and I have so much fun reading them. We put the Christmas Time book with all of my other special Christmas books and I think it was used more than any of the others. We have put them away now and will get it back out next Christmas and once again it will be a favorite to be shared by all.

My daughter LOVES the tabs
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-01
I highly recommend this book for babies who are just beginning to hold and play with books on their own. My daughter was 7 months old when I bought her this book and she absolutely loves to pull up all the tabs. This book is one of her favorites and she'll specifically seek it out and sit and turn the pages and play with all the tabs. Unlike a lot of other books with flaps or moving parts, these can't be easily torn off and have been sturdy enough to hold up repeated lifting and occasional chewing and drooling. The pictures are well-drawn and the quality of the book is good.

Just FYI, this book avoids the religious aspects of Christmas and focuses on things like decorating, Santa, and activities such as sledding and caroling. That may be a plus for some people and a minus for others!

My homeschooled daughter really likes this book (she's in 2nd grade). When we received it, she did 20 pages in one sitting. I had to ask her to save some pages for later :) It states a rule, then has a few pages of different activities for each rule. For homeschooled kid, you can do more per day. For kid that attends a public school, the activities on each page are short enough to be enjoyable. This book came with CD that has a pdf file of this whole book, so you can redo some lessons by printing them later again.

I love this book. It has a section that explains the grammar/punctuation rule, then a number of pages to reinforce the lesson. The examples are quite clear and the rules broken down into the basics. Great for us homeschoolers and terrific for traditional students who just want reinforcement or review.
