Yes, this book has short stories, but my inner-city middle graders are not interested in them. Students need stories that they can relate to. Maybe it is just me, but this has not proven to be helpful in my classroom, although it does add to the other bunch of books that I have on my shelf and it makes me look more well-read, I suppose. Please, don't waste your money!

i admit--i am a bit biased. i was introduced to this book before i began to work with bob and some of the other writers included in the collection. it is an asset to any classroom library. after i met bob, i began to treasure the book even more. what a fantastic teacher he is... what an excellent book...

I have started using this well thought out book in my high school creative writing class. My students, most of whom are reading below grade level, easily understand the stories. The author notes and editor notes help me prepare them for their writing challenge.

This is a valuable teaching tool in my classroom.

This book includes SO MANY beautiful stories to share with students and stimulate their writing! This is my third year of teaching and I don't know what I would have done without this book. I was fortunate to find it here @ Amazon the summer before I began as a new educator. It really helped me set up my writing program for my 6th, 7th and 8th grade language arts students.

Another installment of the same kind of relevent topics and well-written samples would not be a horrible thing to release into the universe.

Too much of the illustrations are devoted to words!

At the age you potty train (2-3) the kids really respond to simple humor and interesting pictures. My one big problem with this book is that about 75% of each illustration is devoted to presenting each individual word of prose on the page. Even with the humor, there wasnt enough pictoral depiction of the sequence of sensing and doing the business! Not many kids this age are really going to focus on each word in the caption so I think the illustration allocation is totally off.

We have been struggeling with our 3 1/2yo daughter to get her potty trained. I read the reviews on this book and was quite impressed by the other mother's comments so I said "what the heck". AND for the price I could not beat it. Received the book in a timely fashion. The description of the books condition was very accurate. I would use this seller again. I was not to impressed with the book BUT I gave the book 5 stars because my daughter loved the book. It was read everytime she sat on the potty. In a matter of 3 days she was trained. Praise God!! Finally my last one potty trained. Even though I was not impressed with the book I would recommend it to mother's because for some reason kids just get it.

Another cute potty training book that really doesn't train much.

I gave it three stars because the drawing are cute and at least it's a fun way of getting the message across that when it's time to "go", at least go to the bathroom. However, this book really doesn't deal much with the grim mechanics that all we parents have to teach our children about. Most of the content is about getting the child in the bathroom, but there are only four pages dealing with what the bathroom is all about and exactly what to do there. Another book full of cuteness that puts almost the entire burden of training back on the parent.

My 2-year-old and I think this book is okay. The art work is a little hard to follow for me, although my son doesn't seem to have a hard time. He likes the poetry of it. It isn't a great potty training book, per say, but nevertheless, an okay purchase. One part I don't like is pushing the standing up to pee for boys, I prefer to start him out sitting and progress to that once the actual going in the potty 100% of the time is established.

A little underwhelming. My 9 month old daughter has little interest in these Baby Einstein books (we also have "Dogs" and "Babies"). The size is smaller than you would expect, but the real problem is that the content is not very exciting.

My 11 month old is completely bored with this book. She doesn't even want to look at the pictures, she just tries to turn the pages as fast as she can to get to the end. Also, it is a teeny book! Much smaller than I expected even after reading other people's reviews. We have several of the Baby Einstein books, none of which get opened very often. Stick with the classics. Dr. Seuss is a winner every time!

This is an adorable little board book with some fantastic feline art in it! Our first son grew up with a cat in the house and this book was one of his favorites. I remember him crawling after the cat with this book in one hand when he was about 9 months old, as if to say "Hey wait! I have this book you'll love!" :>) This is a must-have for any feline-loving home. The colorful images range from classical paintings to modern art. You can also get Baby Einstein's Baby, Birds, and Dogs for a nice set.

This book is not by Rosemary Wells. It's created "in her style" based on the television cartoon series, which I don't think is made very clear on the website. It's not really of the same quality as a real Rosemary Wells book.

I was so disappointed in this book. I failed to notice that this was a book "based on" the Nick Jr. T.V. show that is "based on" the Max and Ruby characters by Rosemary Wells. This book had none of the charm, humor, or character that the REAL Rosemary Wells books have. Surely, true Max and Ruby fans will be disgusted by the watered-down attempt to write a story. Whoever wrote this book should go back to writing the "step into reading" Disney Princess books. Not worth your time!

More than a regular board book

Review Date: 2007-09-20
Though it's categorized as a board book, this full-size hardback combines board-like laminated cardboard pages with a soft, cushy cover. Complete with multiple illustrations on each page, it's perfect to read to a infant in your lap, and durable enough he or she can play with it when you're done.

The story is sweet. When Ruby wants to decorate a Christmas tree with ornaments, popcorn and other traditional items, Max has ideas of his own, such as gummy worms, rubber snakes and vampire teeth. The two join forces, however, to place a star on top.

This is my 2 year old's absolute favorite book and calls the main character by her own name because of the uncanny resemblance in both appearance and personality. We both love the rhythm and the illustrations, but I held one star back because I believe that it inspired some naughty behaviors. I definitely noticed more sand eating and wall art after we had read the book a few times. So be prepared!

This book is fantastic. Not only is the story adorable, but the pictures are amazing. It is the best illustrated book my daughter owns. She is 2-1/2 and loves this book so much she has memorized it. She "reads" it from cover to cover all the time. What is cuter than hearing a little voice say, "Baby Please, Baby Please!" It is a must have for your toddlers library.

I checked this book out from the library for my 17 month old daughter and she is absolutely in love with it! We always read a book before she goes to sleep and this is the one that she has chosen every day, twice a day (nap included). It works out well since the book ends with the baby getting a kiss from Mama as she tucks her in for bedtime. I decided to buy it for her so that I won't have to keep renewing the loan. Beautiful images!!!

Brilliant Illustrations and Great Reading for Toddlers

Review Date: 2008-07-17
Have you ever begged your kids to go back to sleep or thought that baby needs a nap? Well you can identify with what this baby gets into. Even though the child is told "no" to this or "don't" do that, you will find yourself laughing at the clever illustrations and expressions. The kids at the daycare believe that everything in the book could happen and realized that the clock depicted in each scene proves that naps are necessary. Now that is a positive reinforcement for parents. The illustrations are phenomenal - the details, color, and mischief depicted - will fill your heart with joy as well as provide discussion topics with your kids.

This is a fantastic little song that carries so much more personality than the words as a mother tries to get the local wildlife to quiet whilst her baby sleeps. The verses are repetitive, but still lovely and unique to each animal. Another great feature is the stunning illustrations that carry on the story behind the singing mother's back. Charming, sweet, and hilarious.

Review Date: 2008-08-23
I enjoy exposing my children to different cultures. This book is a simple and wonderful way to show children life in a small village in Thailand. A mother is trying to put her baby to sleep. The indigenous animals make noise, and the mother hushes each of them.

There is onomatopoeia as each animal makes its own unique sound. The rhymes flow soothingly, and the repetitive phrases let the kids participate in the "reading" of the book.

My only criticism is that some of the animal noises are not very soothing if the book is being used as a bedtime story. As the book progresses (and the children get sleepier), the animals become progressively louder. The book does end on a calming note, but sometimes my kids get worked up by the animal sounds, and the bedtime story has the opposite affect.

My three year old loves this book. From the pictures, to the words, to the page manipulations, it's one of his favorite. He hasn't really been into reading and this is the one that finally got him sitting and interested. For a while he walked around the house screaming "Red stop, Green go!" at the top of his lungs.

At first I was hesitant to buy anything with a flap or wheel. He has destroyed most every other book that had "quirks," and books with pages that don't do anything too. However, after receiving this for Christmas, it has survived without a single tear and he has become interested in other books.

Hopefully his book destroying days are over.

My 2 yr old granddaughter had borrowed this book from the library and enjoyed it so much and was so devastated at having to return it, so i purchased it for her.

The rhyming is pleasant, the premise is pleasant. It makes you giggle and interact with the child. Although my granddaughter can only recognize a few letters she can "read" the entire book by herself now as she has it memorized. I reccomend this book. it is sturdy for little hands, illustrations are simple yet lovely, and it is interactive if you choose it to be!
