This is a fantastic little song that carries so much more personality than the words as a mother tries to get the local wildlife to quiet whilst her baby sleeps. The verses are repetitive, but still lovely and unique to each animal. Another great feature is the stunning illustrations that carry on the story behind the singing mother's back. Charming, sweet, and hilarious.

I enjoy exposing my children to different cultures. This book is a simple and wonderful way to show children life in a small village in Thailand. A mother is trying to put her baby to sleep. The indigenous animals make noise, and the mother hushes each of them.
There is onomatopoeia as each animal makes its own unique sound. The rhymes flow soothingly, and the repetitive phrases let the kids participate in the "reading" of the book.
My only criticism is that some of the animal noises are not very soothing if the book is being used as a bedtime story. As the book progresses (and the children get sleepier), the animals become progressively louder. The book does end on a calming note, but sometimes my kids get worked up by the animal sounds, and the bedtime story has the opposite affect.

My 22 month old son loves many books, but this one has been a stand-out since the first read. He keeps asking for it "again" at the ending and has started to take it to bed with him. I was initially surprised, but now I also love the rhythmic pace and gentle story.
Love it!

My three year old loves this book. From the pictures, to the words, to the page manipulations, it's one of his favorite. He hasn't really been into reading and this is the one that finally got him sitting and interested. For a while he walked around the house screaming "Red stop, Green go!" at the top of his lungs.
At first I was hesitant to buy anything with a flap or wheel. He has destroyed most every other book that had "quirks," and books with pages that don't do anything too. However, after receiving this for Christmas, it has survived without a single tear and he has become interested in other books.
Hopefully his book destroying days are over.

My son loves "Go Dog, Go". We purchased "Red, Stop! Green, Go!" book for a plane ride, and it gave us 30 minutes of great entertainment. He loves the book, and the interactive wheels are just the right size for 2-year old. Excellent compliment to the book "Go Dog, Go".

My 2y-8m old daughter simply adores this book, and we have great fun reading it together. It has been lovingly read to pieces, and it's time for a new one. This book is, hands down, one of her top-notch favorites! When I read to my daughter, I become quite animated; well, this book, by it's very design, invites us to be as silly as we can, because we are in for a jolly good time!
I highly recommend this one!!!

At the moment he doesn't always sit for the whole book as it is a little long sometimes for a board book.
I feel this book encourages imagine and is simple enough for a toddler to understand!

My daughter is currently being potty trained and we now have five books in our house all about going to the potty. My favorite, by far, is Mercer Mayer's The New Potty. I love the Little Critter books. They are perfect for my two year old daughter. Not too long, not too short, bright images...perfect. Plus, I don't mind reading them over, and over and over and over again.
This book is currently in our bathroom. My daughter likes to read it while she's going to the potty and we do our potty time song as she looks through the pictures.
Great book. Highly recommend all of Mayer's books.

My 2 1/2 year old loves these books by Mercer Mayer. Her first book was the I Was So Mad (Look-Look) book and we had to read it every night and she slept with it. I bought this book and several others by Mercer Mayer and she loves them just as much. They are nice because they are affordable and in paperback which makes them easy to bring along on trips. They also all seem to have simple, fun, and easy to understand messages for a toddler and they touch upon the different feelings and experiences a toddler is going through. She also loves the The New Baby book which was great for when her little sister joined the family.

My 2 yr old granddaughter had borrowed this book from the library and enjoyed it so much and was so devastated at having to return it, so i purchased it for her.
The rhyming is pleasant, the premise is pleasant. It makes you giggle and interact with the child. Although my granddaughter can only recognize a few letters she can "read" the entire book by herself now as she has it memorized. I reccomend this book. it is sturdy for little hands, illustrations are simple yet lovely, and it is interactive if you choose it to be!

My 14-month-old little girl can't get enough of this book! We have a stuffed Pooh bear that she mimics the motions with. She even tries to sing along (previous reviewer was right; it's hard to just read and not sing this book!). I only wish it came with a bear like the one in the book. Now THAT would be too cute! I hope to see more Wilson/Williams collaborations in the future!

I haven't read the original, and I don't really get the story. We bought this because Horton is a puppet, and my 15 month old son, who is not usually affectionate with stuffed animals and the like, gives Horton kisses every time we read it. Mostly we use this book to play, wiggling the ears, twirling the trunk, and don't worry about the text (which is not some of the better text in the Dr. Seuss Nursery Collection). The pages are difficult to turn because of the puppet, but we work through it. ;)

This gentle story, told in simple rhyme, shows animals in a stable getting ready for a special guest. The block-print art, rich in earth-tones, gives a humble and loving feel to the scene. Each animal does what it can to prepare the stable, and when Mary and Joseph arrive, the animals stand in hushed anticipation. The final page shows all the animals gathered around the new baby Jesus, saying, "Welcome, welcome to our house!" A perfect read-aloud for little ones.

This book is a favorite for my two pre-school-aged children. We read it year-round.
The rhymes of the tale are engaging. (I love the oft repeated line: "Someone, someone," says Mouse.)
My only quibble with the book is the art work. It is not to my taste, though I think that that is more a matter of personal preference than anything else.

On the final page she pats the baby's face and says "Baby. Baby." It's a very sweet little book and worth getting; your child will love it.

I like this book but the words in the spelling lists themselves are too easy! There are 30 weeks with a new list each week and my DD is probably at the level of Week 15 right now. Getting ready to purchase the 2nd grade book. This isn't the only spelling book I use--I also use the Barron's series, "101 Words Your Child Will Spell By the End of 1st Grade", which I absolutely love.

I use this series as the basis of my daughter's spelling curriculum. Though I would never use it as a stand alone curriculum. Alone it is boring "busy work", but busy work that I feel is necessary to reinforce her spelling skills with repetition, and visual recognition.
I think it is vital to note that one reason I chose this series is the low amount of worksheets in the book. There are an average of 2-3 worksheets per spelling list (with simple problems and exercises on the front and back pages, in large print). That's not much considering the amount most curriculum provide (some up to 10 pages of work per list!).
To supplement the series we play several spelling games, do oral spelling bees, and practice in other ways to reinforce her learning.
Though my DD does dread doing worksheets (there are some small complaints when the spelling workbook is brought out). She's done with them quickly so spelling practice (along with games and simple oral exercises) is finished in 15-30 minutes; making spelling her shortest and most painless subject.
I am pleased enough with the 1st grade level of this series that we are purchasing 2nd grade now.

This is the type of workbook I hate. It includes alot of busy-work that doesn't actually teach children how to spell. The exercises are boring, and a complete waste of time since they don't actually teach the children how to spell the words. There are dictation sentences for each spelling lesson that include words that are more difficult to spell than the words in that week's spelling list. For instance, in Week Six, the dictation sentence is "I have a pup on the bus." The word HAVE, which is obviously the most difficult word to spell in the dictation sentence, is NOT one of that week's spelling words. The word "I" is, as are "pup" and "bus." (Which also begs the question, why is the word "I" a spelling word? The proper usage of "I" should be taught in a grammar workbook. The word certainly doesn't belong in a spelling book.) Anyway, kids could study their five-word spelling list for Week Six, do all of the workbook exercises, and fail the dictation-sentence test because they wouldn't be able to spell a word that wasn't even on the spelling list. This is just one indication that this series was NOT written or overseen by anyone who knows how to teach children. If your teacher uses this book in the classroom, complain loudly and clearly. If you are homeschooling, don't waste your time and money, or your kid's precious brain cells.

This book includes spelling lists and practice sheets for a very good spelling program. If you're like me, and your reading series does not address spelling appropriately (or at all), then you'll find this book very useful. The spelling words are very appropriate for first grade. (There's also editions for the other grades.) For example the first spelling unit is the words: a, an, and, am, and at. My class is doing very well with this program, and it's easy for me, too. Everything is provided in reproducibles.

Our son (6.75 years) loves the daily word problems. He is redoing them this summer before 2nd grade because he requested that I get copies from his teacher. Despite his enthusiasm for doing these problems, he can only do half of them independently. To solve these problems, he needs frequent teacher/parent direction and uses an aid from Using Visual Grids for Solving Math Word Problems.
Because he loves these problems and they are challenging for him, I give the book 4 stars.
Because this workbook cannot be done independently by most first graders, I subtracted a star. It can still be done in a classroom. Our son was an emerging reader until April and jumped to third grade level in June. His teacher spent one-on-one time helping him do these problems all year. He loved it, but his teacher felt that it took too much of her time. I thought that since he is now a fluent reader and has had a lot more practice in mathematics that these problems would be easier. Some are easy for him, but many like the following are too challenging for him to set up by himself.
"A llama eats one bale of hay each week. How much hay will five llamas need for a three-week supply?"
"The baby squirrel needs to eat every two hours. How many times will it eat in 12 hours?"
"This chimp is four feet tall. When it puts its arms out to the sides, its reach is 1 and 1/2 times as long as it is tall. How wide is the chimp's arm span?"

This is more than just a grade level book. It goes beyond simple word problems introducing children to more complex thinking. There are plenty of repetitions of similar problems, so by the end of the book a child will master and sharpen his or her math skills. My son is 6 and I give him a page a day instead of only one problem a day. He is doing really well. And I'll buy more books from the series because I see how well it stimulates his brain.
I wanted to like it...

I LOVE the Evan Moor Daily Language Review for first grade so I thought that this would help my students in math. More specifically, word problems. Unfortunately, this book was a bit too hard to use. I was taking so much time explaining the questions and answers that I was teaching mini-lessons everyday for more than 20 minutes. One problem asked that if one animal was 1 1/2 feet tall, how tall was two? In my state, we go over simple fractions but don't really touch on how to add fractions until second grade. Other questions had them converting inches into feet. While these are good skills to know, I feel they asked them questions that were too hard to understand, too early.
