This is a tender and cheerful story, and Ms. Wolff's illustrations are fabulous. Her little wild horse is so warm and alive I expect him to gallop right off the pages. Get this one for every young --or old--animal lover you know.

Running free and wild as many of us would like to be able to do again. This story was precious. I loved it as much as my granddaughter.

This book by Rita Gray is an encouraging book for children to feel the freedom of adventure with the confidence of supportive and close by parents. Even though the book is about a horse and his parents, children will be able to relate to the message of the story for themselves.
(I read this book today to 26 first graders and they loved it.)

The first thing that attracted me to this book was its bright front cover; and each page inside was no disappointment. The fun colors make this book easy to look at. Each page has a short sentence in both engish and spanish with important words pertaining to a house in bold print. The attention to detail on each and every page is amazing! Then at the end, the reader gets a chance to name the parts of the house with help from the pronunciation guide in the back. This is a very helpful book for learning English or Spanish words to use around your home.

It is right in line with most books in the paperback series. I just wish that it was offered in a longer version a little truer to the episode my daughter adores. But...a short book is better than no book at all!

The song for this episode is violent. In one of the songs, What Do You Do with a Scurvy Pirate, this is what Austin sings:

What do you do with a scurvy pirate?
Load the cannon up and fire it!

In other words, he's telling Uniqua he's gonna shoot Pablo and Tyrone with a big gigantic cannon. Although that might be funny to watch if you're an older kid like me, it's kinda disturbing if you're a three-year-old.

ARGH a fun backyardigans pirate read...

She's only had this a week (she got it in her Easter basket) and my 2 year old already loves the book and is "reading" it to me. Granted, she LOVES Barney, BJ and Baby Bop, so it's great that all make an appearance here. She also got the Zoo book (lift the flap book) and loves that one as well. Good picks by the Easter Bunny!

My daughter is 20 months old and she loves this book also. She is even learning the names of the other characters besides Pablo now by finding them under the flaps. It is a very good quality book. She usually tears the flaps off of books like this but this one is still in one piece and we've had it over a month now.

Lift-the-Flap Backyardigans Halloween Fun

Review Date: 2007-10-13
"Monster Halloween Party" is a "Backyardigans" flap book based on the TV episode "Scared of You." The main difference between this story and that on TV is that on the TV show, Austin was asked to gather three monsters, which took part in his surprise birthday party. In the book, however, it's a Halloween party. It still works, well, though.

Mad Scientist Tasha sends out her assistant Austin with envelopes for three different monsters. Austin does his best to deliver them, but has to contend with them not only being scared of him, but also with each other.

The main fun comes in the flaps and bright foil. There are a total of eighteen flaps and they're all reasonably easy to lift. (Parents with young kids, however, may want to consider lifting them beforehand. Oh, and if you have any trouble lifting, one trick is to push from the back of the page.)

"Monster Halloween Party" is good, not-too-scary Halloween fun for all Backyardigans fans. It comes with a decent story and the illustrations are top-notch.

I borrowed this book from the library for my 15 month old. I was sad to return it. Now, I'm looking for a hardcover of the book. It quickly became my baby's favorite book. When we read it together, she actually feels like she's reading. She loves identifying and pointing at the words and pictures and stating out loud, "Orange", "Pear", "Apple", and "Bear". The illustrations are adorable. The idea for this book was so simple yet creative at the same time. I highly recommend this book for those with young children. It will be a joy to read together and elicit many smiles.

This is a very cute, very short book. As you probably already know, the author takes those four words (plus one more, at the end - there!) and moves them around to make funny things happen - pear bear? (The bear turns pear-shaped and pear-colored.) We like this book, but thought it should be a board book so that the kids can look at it themselves, anytime. (At our house, hardcover books are only for looking at with grown-ups until the kids are closer to 4 or 5. By which time this book will hold less interest.)

Love it!

I'm a veteran teacher of more than 20 years and an English major to boot and I've always found teaching writing difficult and sooooo tedious. This book is a God send. I did almost all of the assignments given and my class enjoyed all of them. We wrote six, yes six, five paragraph essays this year and my kids really became better writers. I have recommended it to many colleagues and my student teacher used it successfully in her first teaching job. It's a "keeper" and well worth the money.

This book is wonderful. I have been looking for a book to help my 4th graders prepare for the Writing Assessment, and this is it. The kids love the lessons and everyone from my Sp.Ed students to my Gifted students have been making progress. My husband sometimes reads stories that my students write and he has seen an improvement. One of my parents said that her son's everyday writing is even getting better, and she knows we have been writing. We still have a lot more of the book to cover . I know their writing will get even better as we progress.

I have a third and fourth grade classroom. I find the lessons contained in this book provide easy to follow, day by day steps that the children enjoy writing about. Students who had barely written three sentences are now writing five paragraphs with all the components of a good paragraph. I highly recommend this book, which can be adapted to any classroom, to increase your students writing skills!!

In my 13 years of curriculum, I have not found a writing book better than this one for elementary school. Well worth every penny of the money spent.

The lesson plans are done for you, and they are step by step! There are modeled pieces of writing included and bulletin board display ideas. There are skills imbedded in the lesson.

There are also additional writing ideas which can convert the 10 weeks into 30 weeks of writing practice.

Great for new teachers! Great for those of us who are uncomfortable teaching writing, because we are unsure of our own writing quality.

I LOVE this book.

My Food/Mi Comida: This board book offers poor translation and does not include food items that are a natural part of Hispanic children's diet.

I do not recommend this book for pre-schoolers, parents to read to children, or for pre-school teachers to use at pre-school.

Unclear pictures, Odd Choices
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-26
Emberley has some odd pictures making this book a bit useless. Soup looks like a cheese wheel. Other food items like berries are recognizable, but not as clear as I feel they should be. Also, some items are a bit odd - like a radish - what child is eating radishes on a regular basis? There are alot of better choices for a child's book. I would likely not buy her books again.

Some issues with some of the Spanish Words
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 22 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-21
As a native Spanish speaker, it is very important for me that my son learn Spanish. My son loves all of the books in this series, but this one causes me a few problems. Part of the problem is the Spanish words used (which is an issue for my dialect). For example, "bananas" is translated as "las bananas" instead of "los platanos" and peas are translated as "las guisantes" instead of "los chicharros" and "broccolli" is "el brecol" instead of "el broculi" (sorry my keyboard is not set to do accents). The other issue is some of the foods selected. For example, "soup" is one of the foods, but it is hard to draw in a way that children really understand that is is soup. "Radish" is anothert choice, but since it is such an uncommon vegetable, I am not sure why she didn't use someting like a potato or a bell pepper, which are more common. So, I would recommend this book, but be prepared to change some of the words around using your computer, printer, and some glue.

I wanted to introduce Spanish to my infant son so I bought this and "Mi Ropa/My Clothes" by the same author. I like this one the best. Both have very simple pictures labeled with the English and Spanish word. My son is 5 months old and seems to enjoy the pictures.

This brightly colored book is great to use as an addition to a Spanish curriculum like the workbook Flip Flop Spanish. The sturdy pages continue to wow my classes of ages 3 all the way to 12 years old. If you'd like to introduce your child to Spanish, I might choose an animal, colors, or shapes book before this one.

The changes in words based on region, as another reviewer stated, are hard to get around - the problems she had with the words are less common where we live - so I think it's great to know ANY word when you're trying to introduce a second language to your child. It's a big endeavor, and this book helps!

I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when I found this resource for teaching informational/nonfiction selections to my 6th graders. It covers everything I am required by the state to teach: reading tools/strategies, text organization, graphic aids, various type of articles/selections, etc. A huge plus is the color transparencies that come with it and accompany the different selections.

This is one of the best resources I've come across. I can teach the whole unit just using this one source. How often can a teacher say that??

Alice Boynton's lessons are very sensible and any teacher shouldn't have problems with her suggestions. It might also be useful for a parent, like me, who has an elementary school kid and who's trying to get her to do more than read manga and watch anime. Boynton's tips attempt to capture the student's attention span and force her/him to invst some intellectual effort. To payoff in learning from an entire world of these non-fiction books.

A great resource!

It helps you to explain the rationale of all these different types of text. A Must for reading teachers!
