This is a beautiful book for toddlers. Fisher Price makes a good quality product and this one has heavy cardboard pages will stand up to little hands who are eager to turn pages. Little flaps hold surprise photos underneath and my 2 year old granddaughter loves looking for the hidden pictures. Good choice for fun reading time.

My daughter is a big fan of the DVDs (well most of them) right now at 16 months her favorite is Old McDonald.

This book is cute but not as fun as What Floats which rhymes. It is not as cute because it does not rhyme and flow like What Floats but it is good that it is a bath and pool book.

We bought this book along with the "Water, water, everywhere" 8mos ago, when our baby was 10mos.
She was always trying to stand up and get out of the bathtub.
Now she sits in the tub "reading" her book. Then the problem was that she never wanted to get out of the tub, so now we keep the other book in the bench where we dry and dress her.

I don't feel the edge is sharp, as other reviewer said, and I do like that the story is very simple. My baby like to point out everything she sees on the pages, and now she "reads" the story by herself (in her own mysterious language).
With this books, bath time is now very fun for both of us.

I started reading to my daughter while she was bathing at six months and now she ABSOLUTELY LOVES books! I think that is a very healthy and wonderful thing!! I attribute this love of books to the four baby einstein books we have read at bathtime for the past year every single night (we also have water water everywhere, mimi's toes & what floats). My daughter never gets sick of the stories and now that she is 16 mos. she loves to point out the animals on the last page; I ask her where is the duck? Where is the turtle? And she points to it, etc. It has been a wonderful teaching tool for me, and I wholeheartedly recommend all four baby einstein books for bathtime. Mine don't have sharp edges. Especially when they are warm from the bathwater. They're exceptionally well made, too. Used every night for a year and still they look like new! Read to your kids at bathtime - they can't run away or lose intrest - you've got a captive audience! Take advantage of it!

This is a cute book, but it's useless. I won't let my 7 month old use it because I'm afraid the sharp edges of the book will cut his mouth (or hands, or legs).

Fantastic Writing Lesson Plan

This is a fantastic book. I have always felt a little inadequate as a writing teacher. I can write, but I don't know where to begin on the road to teaching children to write. This is a step-by-step plan and it is fantastic!

The Best!

I have reviewed many books about how to teach children to write stories, and this one is by far the best! To begin with Mariconda is the only author I've read who distinguishes between character-problem-solution stories and what she calls "personal narratives." Personal narratives are more about an experience than a character, are usually heavily descriptive, and there is no "problem." The character-problem-solution mantra had always bothered me, because we all know that there are wonderful stories that are more "mood pieces" than solutions problems.
More importantly, the book consists of specific lessons on teaching the elements of story writing, in isolation. It can be done! Look at the Table of Contents to see exactly what is covered. These lessons are explained so well explained that you feel fully equipped to teach them, now!
Additionally, the author herself writes with "voice," unlike the usual dry, anonymous style of textbooks. When I leafed through the book and saw an entry that said something like, "getting students to elaborate with detail is the bane of most English teachers' existence," I bought it then and there. What we all need is to hear about teachers' experiences, not just "programs" that seem to spring from nowhere.
Lastly, her approach works! When this program was implemented at the school she taught at, the percentage of students passing the state writing assessment rose from 47% to 92% in four years. That is amazing! I am planning on using this book for my high school students as well as elementary and middle school!

An incredible book to teach children to write creatively!

I used this book to teach 3rd and 4th graders in Watts how to write. This book has lesson plans that teach step by step. All kids have wonderful ideas but sometimes do not know how to express these ideas on paper. This book shows you how to teach them. It was incredible to read the stories my students wrote after learning the techniques in this book! All my students became amazing authors! They were so proud of their stories and I was so proud of them! Thank you for writing this amazing book!

I have used this book with 3 schools in two states to help teachers teach writing and to help students prepare for state writing tests. This book shows you many simple ways to help kids understand narrative writing. The diamond graphic organizes the students's thinking and writing. The mini-lessons are great, and the test prep advice, the paced prompt, works. why should anyone take a test they aren't prepared for? the paced prompt shows the students how to organize their time and thougths, and the scores showed it. If you or your teachers are using Write Traits this will fit beautifully, but the book also stands alone. I've bought copies for all my teachers!

A book that, incredibly, lives up to its title! This is my 13th year of teaching elementary school and this book does what no other book has been able to do: it works! I found myself reading the entire thing in the teacher's store where I first found it. I suggested to my entire 3rd grade team that we implement it and they whole-heartedly agreed. If you want to teach kids to write narrative that A. makes sense, and B. is interesting, you cannot go wrong. Haven't you tried the formula of character, setting, problem, solution, one too many times and not been satisfied with the results? I know I have. This approach is much better, and shows you how to teach beginnings, elaboration, suspense (the best part), main event, resolution, and satisfying ending. The beauty is you teach it by parts using real literature examples, modeling, and then students practice. You will find yourself nodding your head as the author relates the same kinds of frustrations you have when reading elementary school writing and shows you how to change them. This book is the best I've ever seen to help you teach writing. There is no fluff and many great insights. Your students will write amazing stories and you'll never teach writing the same way again!

Very cute and simple, both in pictures and text. Charming is the best word for the series.

Dunrea has a real gift at drawing emotions on geese. Even a very little child (and these books are just the right pace for babies and toddlers) can figure out what the geese are feeling by looking at the pictures.

I really recommend all these books.

I love this whole series for it's simplicity and fun. I bought 5 from the series for my two daughters, 9 months and 3 years. Ollie is probably favored the most by my daughter. It's the best kind of bedtime story, short with fun pictures and a text that my child can easily memorize.

My son is almost 2, he loves this book, he brings it to me to read to him quite often.

All I have to do is to say "I won't come out" like Ollie does... and his mood picks right up. Many times tht prompts him to run and find the book to bring it to me to read to him once again...

A cute simple story about a stubborn little gosling and his two sisters trying to coax him out of his egg.

My 6 month old son enjoys this book. One evening, before bed, my husband called me into the room to show me that my son was pulling down the characters' hands to see their eyes! He enjoys Peek-a-boo with us, but I was really surprized to see him interact with the book like this. Of course he needs help to let go of the hands and not rip them, but I think I can say with certainty that he likes it!

A good friend of mine introduced me to Maisy books when I was pregnant with my first child. I have spread the wealth to all the other new moms in my acquaintance. Babies and toddlers LOVE these books. The characters are sweet, the illustrations are appealing, and the flaps are so much fun! Best of all, they are reasonably priced, so they are a good addition to baby shower gift bags. Note: make sure when you purchase that you get "lift the flap" books. Some Maisy books do not have flaps, but my kids prefer the flap versions hands down.

My 13 months old girl loves this book. Personally, I would like to see some repetitive phrases like "No, not here" on the flaps right before they introduce the sound of the animals so that it will reinforce "Yes/No" concept as well.

Another Fun Lift the Flap Book from Maisy
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-14
If you are the parent of a young child, you probably know who Maisy is. She's a mouse with a duck, a squirrel, an elephant, and a crocodile for friends. Why the crocodile isn't trying to eat the others is beyond me, but that's life in Maisy's world.

Both of my daughters love the Maisy books; there's something about their simple stories and colorful pictures that even appeals to adults. The books are short and easy to read. But, the stories are never obnoxiously simplistic, like so many other books for small children.

This is a lift the flap book in which the childen are lifting flaps trying to figure out where Maisy lives. Naturally, we don't find out untilt he end of the book (hey, it would ruin the plot to reveal earlier, right?). One caution, the kids might get a little aggressive with the flaps and tear a few, resulting in the purchase of a new lift the flap book.

We've used the Bob books, Diego phonics, Curious George phonics and by far this is the best "set" of books for my 4 year old boy. Each book focuses on a different phrase, so the repetition of certain words builds confidence.

The stickers have been a great reward system, for us. Generally I am selective about when using rewards - I'd prefer my son learn to read simply for the enjoyment of reading, and not for the sticker - but I have to say that stickers work! I volunteer for 1st & 2nd graders who are "behind" their classmates (something I really don't agree with in our public schools) and stickers motivate them to read, even at that age. It also becomes a quick way for them to see how many books they've read.

I commend the teacher who started this set, and hope more educators are able to put their real-life expertise out for parents like me!

Best Early Reading Series Ever

We tried the BOB books in addition to tons of other early reading books and we were always disappointed! They were too hard or easy and not progressive. The stories were boring.

We started this series of Books while my daughter was in Kindergarten. She loved them!!! Earning a sticker every time she correctly read a story was a HUGE incentive because after 3 stickers she moved on to the next story! The repetition was incredibly helpful with word recognition and the comprehension questions are a great tool that we now do with every story we read! We read this series all summer long and now my daughter is in an advanced reading group in first grade! I recommend them to anyone who has a child with a basic sight word list.

My daughter who turned 3 in April loves this book; she received it as a gift last Christmas. It's 10 little books that pull out of clear plastic sleeves. She likes to pretend to read, and the way these stories are written and illustrated, it is very easy for her to do so. I just bought a couple more in the series; I hope they're as good.

I recommend this book to anyone with a child ready to read. It is a step by step phonics based system. Other books I've looked at have black and white pictures or boring stories. The colorful pictures add to the story and I often hear my son laughing while he reads even the simplest books. I have both sets that are in Level One, and both sets for Level two. I'm sure I will be purchasing Level Three.

AWESOME for resistant readers!

Nice pictures, easy text, graduated vocabulary, and high interest topics. I only wish they had MORE on the independent level than they do.

I bought this book for my three year old who LOVES fire trucks. Although he does love it, it is a bit small and seems geared toward age 1-2. It is a very short book, just a few pages, and very small for the price. The size is clearly listed on the page, but I wasn't prepared for how small it actually was. Still a cute and entertaining book my son enjoys looking at the pictures and feeling the front grill of the fire truck.

The pictures are great and realistic. This is a must-have for the (2-year old) firetruck ethusiast! He/she will have blast with this book.
