My 2 year old is fascinated with school buses. He spots them on the road when we are out and about and so I got him this book. It was an instant hit. The illustrations are wonderful- very full of detail and he loves to name all the things in the pictures. The prose is a delight to read to him, almost like a little song. So cute! We both love it. I would prefer it to be in a board book format for his age, but he loves it nonetheless.

I came across this book at a booksale. I fell in love with it the moment I layed eyes on it. The storyline is really adorable. It reminds me well of "The Napping House" by Audrey Wood. My 21 month old son is so excited to see this book. He always look forward for storytime. The illustrations are very bold and artistically done. Very colorful and lively. Kids of all ages will surely love this. This is a keepsake. I have a paperback copy and I'm getting a hardcover copy as a back-up in case it gets worn out of daily repeated readings.

This is a fantastic book! My sons (age 3) love it...from the sing-song rhyming text to the wonderfully detailed illustrations. They find something new in the pictures every time we read the book. The predictable text also lets them "read" the story to me. This book is a must for any home library!

A must for little bus enthusiasts!

My son -- then just over a year old -- loved the library's copy of "The Little School Bus" to death, and we had to buy it (taped-up pages and all). The text has a wonderful cadence -- lots of repeating -- and fun, colorful characters. The art is witty, and a pleasure to look at (for parents), with lots of "I Spy" details to keep the child's attention through repeated (and repeated and repeated) readings. I'm surprised that I'm the first to recommend this book. It's a gem! (We now search out books with art by Pamela Paparone!)

The title of this book is the Gentle Giant Octopus. The author of this book is Karen Wallace. The illustrator is Mike Bostock. The genre is true animal story.
The octopus can have 60,000 babies at a time. When a fish bites off a tentacle, the tentacle grows back. The octopus has no bones. It can fit in really small places. Octopi squirt ink to get away from predators.
The main idea of this book is to teach people about octopi. It is also to teach how octopi live and survive in the ocean. It is on our top 10 because our class loves animals. It is a good book to read and to teach people about octopi.

I am thrilled that there is such an accurate book about the life of an Octopus for kids. Nature is not always gentle, which unfortunately other people do not take into account in their review of this book. I love the octopus, and have bought this book for my kids and my nieces and nephews, because it is a book that is informative and wonderfully written.

I was amazed to learn that most kids have an image of GOD by the age of five, whether or not they're taught spirituality/religion by their parents. That being said, a book like this is a great way to 'jumpstart' spirituality in your child's life. It also teaches tolerance of others, being that the book shows people of different backgrounds.

Overall, this book wasn't overly dramatic at all and the illustrations were rather pretty.

This little gem of a book is the perfect bridal shower present. Every baby should have it read to them over and over again. As the little one learns to turn pages (that's what the thick pages of a board book are for), he/she will also begin to hear and see that the world is a spiritual place with a lot of different spiritual expressions in it. That's a lot of value for about eight bucks.

I have enjoyed this book with my five year old and 20 month old. The illustrations are bright and bold and the book describes the origins of God's name. It is clear, understandable and inspirational for young and old alike. I highly recommend this as a godparent gift in board book for younger children and hardback for older children.

This is the first book I've read that encourages us to teach punctuation by looking at high-quality writing and easing into the rules. Kids not only learn how to puncutate their papers correctly, but also how to use punctuation to enhance their ideas.

Teach punctuation the Writer's Workshop way!

Review Date: 2003-06-26
This is an outstanding book on teaching punctuation while your kids are engaged in authentic, meaningful writing. The author provide excellent and practical suggestions for a year-long study, gives details on the first(introductory), study, and explains how to weave punctuation study into your literature-based program. Your students WILL become punctuation fanatics--they will notice and attend to punctuation like you wouldn't believe. The only downside is that you might see their writing go crazy for a while on commas, colons, and dashes. What a refreshing change for you and your students! If you are doing Writer's Workshop with your students you need this book.

Best Practices In Action

Review Date: 2006-11-03
Janet Angelillo scores a home run in this stellar teaching resource book that is bound to inspire teachers to discard old-fashioned methods of teaching punctuation (worksheets, skill and drill) in favor of those found in this book. The text is filled with ideas for lessons that will motivate, challenge, and create independent writers who use punctuation--sophisticated punctuation--with ease. Chocked full of ready-to-use mini-lessons that feature a variety of texts for students to examine, they learn how powerful punctuation can be in making the meaning of their writing clear. Angelillo makes it possible for every teacher to put into practice what research and best practices has been saying for a long time: We learn to write and use conventions in the context of real writing, not from worksheets. And best of all, she doesn't just tell you, she shows you how. This is an important book for every writing teacher to read and use with students of all ages.

I combine music with books - and this book has consistant meter which makes it a great chant for children to learn, along the lines of The House that Jack Built. The pictures are lively, humorous and colorful. A great companion for the "Sticky Bubble Gum" song on Carole Peterson's cd of that title! What a find!

We love this book. After hoarding it at the library by renewing it to the limit several times, I finally ordered it so my younger son can now enjoy it too! When my oldest was 2, he would listen to it again and again and laugh at the predicament of the animals. The rhyme is wonderful and the illustrations are bright and full of fun. He is 4 now...and still loves to "read" the book with me.

I am buying some more books by Helen Oxenbury for her.

I have all 4 of these Oxenbury books and both of my kids have been absolutely captivated by them. It is the only book that they will just sit and actively listen and follow from between 6-15 months. Watch their faces while another reads it to them and you will be amazed at how the respond to the simple, large pictures and rhymes. As an adult, I am attracted to more detailed and complex illustrations, but this is what a BABY likes! Any of her books are a perfect way to introduce you child to book reading.

We have all of Oxenburys books in this series (Clap Hands, Say Goodnight, All Fall Down & Tickle Tickle). We also have her Big Baby Book as well. My daughter is 13 months old and loves books, but the books she continually picks out and hands to me are the books in this series. She adores them. My husband and I have probably read these hundreds of times to her, and she is captivated by the art work and the rhyme. A definite must have for your little one!

Review Date: 2002-07-24
My two year old is a Maisy (and a bus) fan, but we all enjoyed this book. Today Maisy is a bus driver and she visits bus stops numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4 collecting her friends. Then they all get off at bus stop number 5. It's a good introduction to counting numbers without the confusion of also associating them with objects.

There's not much to the story but it doesn't grate on me and it has a little more purpose than some of the other Maisy storylines. My son enjoys saying "brrm brrm" and "bye bye" at the appropriate places. And like all the Maisy books, the illustrations are bright and simple.

My son received this book as a gift when he was three months old. Even at that age he was mesmerized by the bright, bold illustrations, and was able to turn the fairly sturdy pages. This book was by far his favorite until about 13 months old. The text is very simple and straightforward, and the illustrations spell out the text. Visually, the Maisy books are irresistable to babies.

This book is so boring it was a chore for me to read it, even though it is only about 100 words. The book is about Maisy picking up other animals on her bus route and then depositing them at the last stop. There is no rhythm or cadence to the text, and the illustrations are flat and dull. There is no moral, plot, or anything in it to make it an engaging read for a child of any age. There are better books out there.

If you are the parent of a young child, you probably know who Maisy is. She's a mouse with a duck, a squirrel, an elephant, and a crocodile for friends. Why the crocodile isn't trying to eat the others is beyond me, but that's life in Maisy's world.

Both of my daughters love the Maisy books; there's something about their simple stories and colorful pictures that even appeals to adults. The books are short and easy to read. But, the stories are never obnoxiously simplistic, like so many other books for small children.

"Maisie [the mouse] is driving her bus today. Who will be waiting at Bust Stop Number 1?" That's the beginning of this delightful tale for very small fry. The pictures are bright and uncluttered, and the book features some elementary counting. There's an element of surprise as Maisy picks up passengers at bus stops 1 through 5: Will there be room for Eddie the elephant? For toddlers and younger, a fun and colorful introduction to reading.

I love this story and was planning on getting it for my daughter at some point- when I saw it as a board book I decided to get it right away! The book seems well made and has nice bold, vibrant illustrations. The only negative thing I noticed about it- and I noticed it right away when I received it- is the fact that it has pointy edges. Most board books are rounded at the corners. It's not a huge deal, but for young kids/babies who are clumsy and put everything in their mouths, it seems like a poor design.

My daughter, at 21 months, is on a real Maisy kick. She can't get enough, and particularly loves these Maisy lift-the-flap books. Not a lot in them for the parents, but also not a terrible chore to read over and over, since they are simple enough that she can pretty much read them to herself. She loves the silliness of this one, in particular (fish in the toilet, duck in the washing machine, etc.). I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with a Maisy fan in mind.

Looking for Panda and eventually finding him brings cheers and hurrahs from both girls - they never seem to get tired of looking under the flaps to see if Panda is there. The book is made of nice strong card so no matter how many times you lift those flaps there is no chance of them being ripped off in the excitement of finding Panda!

We love Maisy, but this book had to be put away. Frankly, I think the publisher should pull it. As my husband pointed out, it encourages children to explore all the "forbidden" zones -- inside the (front loading) washing machine, where there is a lovely duck and in the toilet, where there's a friendly fish. Under the sink, where there is a cute snail. In the laundry basket, where there's a nice chicken. We're trying to keep our child from dropping toys into the toilet, emptying freshly dried clothes from the laundry basket, crawling into the dryer, and especially from getting inside the under-sink cabinet, and this book seems to encourage the exact opposite!
