Another Great Book in a Great Series

My 6 month old son enjoys this book. One evening, before bed, my husband called me into the room to show me that my son was pulling down the characters' hands to see their eyes! He enjoys Peek-a-boo with us, but I was really surprized to see him interact with the book like this. Of course he needs help to let go of the hands and not rip them, but I think I can say with certainty that he likes it!

Great book!!

I purchased this book for my son when he was about 10 months old and it's been a huge hit from the very beginning. His eyes light up when I ask him to get his "peek-a-boo" book. He loves to lift the hands to show who's hiding. It's a family favorite!

Didn't think we would love this book when I first saw it...

My son loves to play with the flaps on this book. There isn't much educational about the book, but he smiles when he opens the hands of each sesame street character. It is more of a fun book.

A very short alphabet book, with each letter illustrated by an adjective-noun pair. The animals get a little weird at the end of the book (xylo xylophoning? Uglybird being ugly?), but that's only to be expected.

My 3yr old absolutely adores this book!!Its so much fun reading with him and having a book that is teaching him while he's having fun. Its easy and light and does not get him frustrated like other books I've tried to use to get him to learn something. I've learned that Boynton books are a great way to learn and yet still let a child be a child....after all I don't think that at 3 he has to know what college he's going to and what his profession should be....If me reading "U, uglybirds being ugly" makes him giggle, its the best thing in the world!!!

Daughter likes it !

This review is about this book, not another Ratatouille book

This is a really cute book on rats and would be perfect for this year's 2008 Chinese New Year because it is the year of the rat! This book is based on the extra short of "Your Friend the Rat" from the Ratatouille movie minus mentions of the black plague. with Remee & Emile hosting the book it makes rats look cute.

Everybody at this point should have seen Ratatouille and or have looked at lots of books based about or from the movie. This book is different, it focuses on "Rats". This book tells us that there are 2 common types of rats, it tells how big a rat is, about what they like to eat and how strong their teeth are. It even has a page on the Hindu God Ganesha and how a rat carries Ganesha, and has 3 pages on how the rat is the 1st animal & year in the Chinese Zodiac as well as how people born in the year of the rat have certain special traits. The book also talks about how rats are important, how rats and humans share a similar internal biology, how they have helped find cures for diseases and even traveled to outer space. On the last page is cute little song about Rats that is also included in the short movie.

Each year I try to get a book that focus on that years Chinese Zodiac animal so that my daughter can learn about that animal and this year this will be her special rat book!

If you look at the other 2 reviews you'll notice that they are not about this book, but other Ratatouille books, just to give you a heads up. Also, this is not a Chinese New Year book....just about book about Rats!

Everything we do and everything we learn is based in some way on how we feel.

How we feel about our emotions-whether we value those emotions and how we cope-shapes how we nurture children.

Adapted from John Gottman's Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child, this book helps adults identify their parenting and caregiving style. It explains the five important steps in "emotion coaching" children, to ensure that children are guided to healthy emotional growth.

Kids who can accept and share their emotions do better in many ways, Gottman's research shows:

They form stronger friendships;
They achieve more in school;
They bounce back from emotional crises more quickly; and
They are physically healthier.

Beautifully illustrated with photographs of parents and children.

In the back there is even a list of all the words used in the book and pronunciations for each word, both in English and Spanish.

My kids love this book, my 5 year old is looking forward to doing it a second time. It is perfect for pre-K and Kindergarten. Not too much for one sitting, and a coloring page on the back. We use this as our special coloring page to try our hardest to stay in the lines and be as neat as possible, which is really the whole idea of handwriting as well.

Excellent tool for youngsters learning to write.

I am using A Reason for Handwriting K with my 4 year old daughter. It is working pretty well for us. It is a traditional, "ball and stick" type of handwriting program.

The workbook starts off with a short introduction to basic pencil strokes - circles, diagonal lines, etc. It then introduces the beginning writer to proper way to write the different letters of the alphabet, both upper and lower-case. It uses the concept of a treehouse to teach children how big or little to make the letter (ie. a capital "D" touches the roof of the treehouse, while a lower-case "a" does not).

Unlike the other workbooks in this series, this one does not have the children copying scriptures. Instruction is limited to writing the letters. One of the best features of this workbook are the coloring pages. As each letter is introduced, there is a corresponding picture of an animal or object that begins with that letter of the alphabet. My daughter enjoys coloring the pictures, and it is good motivation for her to try her best.

I do recommend this book. We have found it pretty easy to use, although probably helps that my daughter has about a year of previous handwriting practice. If your child gets easily frustrated, you might want to look into the Handwriting Without Tears series instead. This one is working for us and I like the emphasis on scripture that is found in the more advanced workbooks.

If your child loves Maisy and going to the fair, this one is a keeper! My two-year old loves the part when Tallulah yells "Yoo Hoo!" from the top of the ferris wheel.

One of the best of the Maisy series
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-08
If you are the parent of a young child, you probably know who Maisy is. She's a mouse with a duck, a squirrel, an elephant, and a crocodile for friends. Whty the crocodile isn't trying to eat the others is beyond me, but that's life in Maisy's workd.

Both of my daughters love the Maisy books, and this is a particular favorite. The books are short and easy to read and have a certain appeal that I just haven't quite figured out yet. The stories are never obnoxiously simplistic, like so many other books for small children.

In this book, Maisy visits (surprise!) the fair. She visits various rides and finishes up with some cotton candy. Okay, so its not long on plot, but two-to-three year olds love it.

Another fantastic Maisy book

Like another reviewer said, it's a shame it doesn't come in a board book version. My 2 year old daughter adores this book and carries it around with her everywhere. Our copy is dog-eared and taped to death, but she still loves it! Still, a smaller, sturdier version would be very welcome.

I was given this book in the hardcover format as a baby shower gift. My daughter (now 20 months old) has LOVED it since the first time we read it. The bright colors and beautiful rhymes hold her attention. Now she loves pointing to all of the fish as I describe them. I was so happy when they started making the boardbook format. I stock up - buying 4 or 5 at a time - and give them away for EVERY baby shower or new baby gift. This is a FABULOUS book that ALL kids should have in their collection.

I recently purchased this book for my 2-year-old son. While he is too young to be asking questions about where he came from, this is a great starter book on the subject. We are expecting our second child, and our son knows that Mommy has a baby in her belly. What I like most about Joanna Cole's book is that she uses accurate, yet simple, terminology, and gives accurate information without going into too much detail. This is a great tool to help provide that first awareness of where babies come from. Now our son is beginning to understand that at one time, Mommy carried him in her belly, too. A great choice for even the youngest toddlers!!

This book is such a great way for preschoolers to learn where they came from and gives parents a way to tell their child's birth story. We interject specific happenings from our son's birth story and he just loves it. It was the perfect book to read to our oldest son when we were pregnant with our second child as it helped him understand the process of what was happening/going to happen now that there was another baby inside of mommy. He was only 2 years old and he comprehended it all through the simple language and adorable pictures! Perfect book!

Joanna Cole (I Am a Big Brother, I Am a Big Sister) has created yet another great book for sharing with young children. Directly addressing toddlers and preschool age children, Cole tells about pregnancy and childbirth. Using terms such as uterus, umbilical cord, and breast, and with illustrations of a child inside the womb, Cole and Chambliss have created a wonderful book for parents to share with very, young children, especially when a new baby is expected. Additional information on answering children's questions about birth is provided at the back of the book.

Starting school brings about many new emotions in children. Will You Come Back for Me? by Ann Tompert addresses a child's fear and anxiety about being separated from mom. The child in this story is dispondent after mother leaves and just watches for her return. The mother calms the child and tells her she is leaving her heart with the child and will surely return to her. She crafts a heart for the child to carry with her as a reminder. The child then makes new friends at school, knowing her mother will return. An excellent, feel-good, warm and fuzzy book. I would recommend reading it to any child who is beginning preschool or daycare, or any child who is having trouble separating from mom.
