We can see how much our little 8 month old responds to the colors, simple shapes and textures. Good size to fit in diaper bag or purse, too. I wouldn't hesitate to give as a gift.

I have used this for several years and have found the word lists to be appropriate and on level. I don't solely use the activities in this book because I feel the kids get bored with the same general format. Other than that, they are quality activities.

"Everyone Poops' is a tasteful classic. "The Holes In Your Nose" is not. We were given it as a gift, but I put it aside after only one reading, saying my kid could read it to himself once he got old enough, but I didn't have to suffer through reading it aloud ever again. We don't need to read about someone picking his nose and eating it! Disgusting, and not worthy of being promoted alongside 'Everyone Poops', as it so often is.

Hits and misses with this one...

Overall if you liked *Everyone Poops* you'll probably like this one....just not nearly as much.

I have to say that while the whole family really enjoyed *everyone poops* which was innovative and funny in a laugh out loud sort of way this one kind of smacked of "how can i do something similar again?" The jokes are somewhat similar in that they are of the body humor variety but with this book they are more of the gross-out variety as opposed to the innovative sort.

That said, that kind of subtlty tends to get lost on children. My son found this book just as much of a hoot as the poop book. His sense of humor isnt, shall we say, all that sophisticated and *going for the gross-out* in his case might be considered a plus.

So while I, as a mom, didn't find this to be anywhere near as good as the other book, I think my son enjoyed it as much and since it was a book for him, I have to say that ultimately it was a good purchase.

I thought that I was being weird when I bought this as a graduation gift for my daughter. Then I noticed that the dedication was "to my son graham, off to college".

Seuss' "Oh, The Places You'll Go!" Is very good, but it's become almost a cliche. This is a really good alternative.

Not just for babies!

This book is full of messages for life. It would be appropriate for the high school/college grad..."take one step at a time" or "be sure to get obstacles out of your way". Deeper interpretations abound! Terrific illustrations with a somewhat retro look. Definitely a humerous hit for all ages.

Frazee's comical "Guide for Babies of All Ages" has a subconscious message behind the humor, meanwhile encouraging those first few steps that will open up a universe of new experiences, baby leaving the shelter of the familiar for the unknown. The roly-poly baby illustrated is tiny compared to everything around him, objects taller than him, but once he pulls himself up and begins that first, tentative journey, it is impossible to stop. Of course, there are a few cautions along the way, "be careful of things that are wobbly; stay away from fragile stuff". There are the usual setbacks, too-much too-soon and a tumble to the floor, followed by a howl and the effort to being again. Cleverly worded and cheerfully illustrated, this tongue-in-cheek guide is a delight, offering more food for thought than is first apparent. Luan Gaines/ 2006.

Tone and dialogue NOT typical of most Spot books
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-18
We're long-time Spot fans in our family of 3 children (2-12); so, I was surprised by the negative tone of the story line and some accompanying illustrations in this one. An angry hippo scowls and grumps at Spot twice (for accidently bumping into her in the water when walking backwards and for mistakenly taking her towel instead of his at the end). With these innocent mistakes, I'd have expected something more along the lines of "Whoa--careful!" and/or oops--sorry! instead of the harsh/grabby reactions. The hippo looks a lot like an older Helen or Helen's Mom, making it even more uncharacteristic. If I'd have browsed this in a bookstore, I would not have purchased it. Although the paperback flap book is 2003 release, I see now it was originally published in 1985..so maybe that's why.
[Still a Spot/Eric Hill fan...but not one of this book and will more carefully screen others before buying.]

This is a great book for little children. The text is simple and the flaps provide answers to questions in the story. The board book format is easy for children to use without the worry of ripped pages. The size is appropriate for pudgy little hands.

If your little one loves lifting the flaps like mine does, then this is for you! The flaps are pretty sturdy and conceal little treasures for your infant/toddler to lift. The squeals that greet each opened flap makes these lift the flap books a worthy splurge!

An Okay Spot Book - a review of "Spot Goes to the Beach"

My son has found a sudden passion for Spot, so when he saw this book at the Library we checked it out. As usual the artwork is cute, but I have to say that I probably wouldn't buy it. The principle problem is the flimsy flaps. They are just not the sort that last, even with older children. Another problem is that what is under the flaps is not all that interesting. The sole exception being the one where Sam (Spot's dad) is buried under the sand. My son thought that was funny.

Finally, I'm just a little bit bothered by the fact that Mr. Hill has Spot and his father out in a boat without life jackets. In fact, he has Spot falling overboard. Spot's father, Sam, saves him of course, but he does it with a duckie-themed innertube. [And yes, maybe I'm a little uptight when it comes to safety issues. Can't help it.]

Three Stars. The pages themselves seem sturdy but the flaps are the flimsy sort. What's under the flaps is not all that interesting either Not a horrible book; just not as good as some of the other Spot books.

My daughter has loved this book since before she was a year old. She learned some of her first signs from the book and loves to see the pictures of the children signing. She picks this book out often when she wants to read.

We have all the DVD's as it was a suggestion of a friend. They have been great! We got the book as a gift and I thought it wouldn't be very useful and put it on my daughter's bookshelf. Wouldn't you know she reads it every night? She loves turning the pages and showing that she knows the signs. I think it's also a great introduction to the written word.

Kids loved the book.

I got this book and the video that goes with it in hopes of using some of the signs with my pre-verbal grandson. He's not using any of the signs yet, but he and his 3-year-old sister love both the book and the video. In fact I bought it for them to watch when they stay with me, but they wanted to take it home with them.

What an absolutely adorable hand puppet book! Excellent choice for a child whose sensory learning is very tactile. Such a sweet story, short, with a great ending. Giggles abound! Would highly recommend it for any child 12 to 36 months. Well worth your time and money! It is made well and will be a great keepsake. Wonderful baby gift or shower gift.

My son loves this book and enjoys all the textures and colors. It also has a mirror in the back for a cute ending. It is bigger than I thought it would be but a ton of fun. FYI, if you join the Borders reward club you can get a coupon for 30% off and use it for this item at your local Borders store. Worth it for the smile on my son's face. I have also bought 3 more as birthday presents and they seem to be a hit! Highly recommend.

Get 'Tails' instead
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-28
I got this book because another Van Fleet book (Tails) has been a run-away hit with the toddlers I know. Incidentally, the book/puppet is larger than I expected, which is neither good or bad, just unexpected.

The first criticism is I was expecting a functional book puppet. While you do stick your hand into the frog and open his mouth, you have to control the pages with your free hand. The pages can be difficult to open wide enough to get a good look at them when there is a hand inside of the puppet part.

Secondly, while most storylines for kids this age are pretty weak, this one was just plain dumb - although the idea sounds promising, the book didn't deliver. It is about the different things a bullfrog eats during the week, with him eating 'you' showing a mirror on the last page. One child went into hysterics at the end when she found out the frog wanted to eat her. Granted, she's not the bravest kid in existence, but I generally try not to frighten little kids out of their wits on a regular basis.

On the positive side, the tactile elements are wonderful, as I've come to expect of Van Fleet.

It made for a nice shower present (for a boy =), but it's not something I'll keep in my kids' bookshelf - and that poor girl who was so frightened still asks about the frog when she comes over. Tails, on the other hand, is used so much that it never has time to get onto the bookshelf. If you don't have Tails, buy that instead. If you already have Tails, I would be content with that instead of getting this one.
