She's only had this a week (she got it in her Easter basket) and my 2 year old already loves the book and is "reading" it to me. Granted, she LOVES Barney, BJ and Baby Bop, so it's great that all make an appearance here. She also got the Zoo book (lift the flap book) and loves that one as well. Good picks by the Easter Bunny!

[[ASIN:006445083X My Five Senses (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science 1)]

My 4.5 year old pre-kindergarten girls loved this book. It was a great compliment to the week they spent exploring the five senses at school. I can see using this book repeatedly for several years to come.

Simply written, beautifully illustrated.

This is a wonderful book for beginning readers that will introduce then to the concept of our five senses and how they make us aware of the world around us when used one at a time or in combinations.

Scientific concepts are simply explained for kindergarten or preschool children, who will most certainly be entranced by the lively illustrations.

This is the perfect book for reading to kids, and for kids to begin to learn to read. It is very well thought out, covers an excellent topic, has a seamless match between the words and the illustrations, and has a generous amount of repetition to learn the five senses. I like reading it to my kids, and my oldest spends some time reading it to herself and has some of the pages memorized.

Straightforward, engaging introduction to the 5 senses

My 5 year old son absolutely adores this book. He asks me to read it repeatedly, and has fun pointing out when he's using his senses just like the (adorably illustrated) child in Aliki's book does. It's a lively, fun introduction to an important scientific concept.

This is the 6th Spiderwick purchase. As before she was thrilled! This line of fantasy is right up her "alley". The quality of the product is superb. I cannot profess to comprehend the depth of these fantastical creatures, but my little girl can introduce you to them all!

I won't spoil it, but i can say that this book went a long way to please the reader, who won't get bored quickly like with classic books. Reading this book is a bit challenging because it's more than book; many would say it's a book for children but i think anybody will have fun just flipping a few pages. Very good quality at a surprisingly low price..

A potty story I can read without wincing!

Review Date: 2008-07-24
Potty training wasn't new to me when we introduced our third child to the potty. I was rather surprised when she didn't respond. At all. She will be five years old this October. We were lost. We brought her to the pediatrician to make sure there were no physical problems. He told us she would use the potty when she was ready. Then we bought this book.

Now I've read other reviews here at Amazon that suggest that this particular book is not a potty training tool. However, I believe that totally depends on your training style. If you have absolutely no problem tossing around the words 'pee' and 'poop' then all the other potty training books (and all of the conventional potty training methods)are for you. Judge me all you want - but I simply cannot read those words aloud with a straight face... And little kids are very perceptive.

We received this adorable little book one afternoon... Read it at bedtime the first night to lots of giggles from both of our youngest girls. The next morning BOTH girls hopped on the potty without prompting. It has now been almost two weeks since we first read the book and our almost-five year old has been in her 'pantalettes' ever since with only two honest accidents. It was a complete transformation.

All training issues aside.. The book is just plain cute - the illustrations illicit plenty of giggles.. and it lends itself to being read with a dramatic flair which we all love.

This potty book pleases us.

This book is just adorable. Some reviewers feel that it isn't a great potty training book, and that might be true for some, but it actually does have a lesson to teach, so I think it's a nice supplement to some of the more popular books about potty training (A Potty For Me; Everyone Poops). This book shows both child and parent that pressure is not an effective way to potty train. When it pleases the princess to use the potty, she will use it, and each child may have a different motivation to start using the potty. Here, the motivation is that the princess doesn't want to take off her pretty new "Pantalettes" to put on her diaper. The only way she can keep them on is to use the potty. One reviewer said that the words in the story are complicated or difficult. I completely disagree. Kids are so smart, and the can learn any word. My two-year-old daughter had never heard the word Pantalettes before (frankly, I hadn't either), we both learned what it was together, and now she loves that word. She thinks it's hysterical, and she wants to read the book because it gives her the opportunity to say it again and again. She also now knows what a chambermaid is, by the way. Kids who love to read will enjoy this book. My daughter is an avid book-reader and prefers books over toys. I was charmed by this book. We originally saw in the public library, so I purchased it. In our family, we focus on fun with potty training. This book fits the bill. It's not our only potty book, but it's one we read a lot for giggles and "Pantalettes."

SOOOO Cute

This book is perfect for my daughter. I wouldn't say it's the cure for potty training, but she likes looking at the book while she sits on her potty. Anything to get her to sit is great! It has a clever take on potty training. If your child likes to be a "princess", this might be the book for you.

Great book for little reluctant princesses (and princes)...!

This is a really nice book about a little princess that, for whatever reason, didn't want to use the potty (sound familiar?). No one could figure out why. Maybe she needed a new potty. Nope. That didn't work. The king and queen were scratching their heads. Then one day, she found out she could wear big girl underwear (a little different style in the days of dragons) and she liked her underwear so much that when it came time to empty her bladder, she didn't want to ruin them so she found the nearest toilet and went, her underwear still on, wrapped around her ankles. HA HA! That's so funny. My daughter loves this book because the story is like the Princess and the Potty segment of the "Potty Power" video, one of the best potty videos around. It's a cute story. It will help you train your little one - boy or girl. The truth is, sometimes you just don't know WHY they won't go. You'll enjoy this book!!!

We love the Princess!

I see some mixed reviews about this book and i have to say that I wouldn't recommend this book if you are looking for something instructional. This is a fractured fairy tale about a little girl who simply refuses to use her potty cause she'd rather use her royal diaper instead, and her parents the King and Queen try absolutely everything from musical potties to glow in the dark potties, to a pink potty but none "please the princess", so they go on to bringing in the King's court to entertain her and then the King and Queen come in to entertain her even the royal teddy bear is brought in but that still doesn't "please the princess" and to no avail they try it all even seek the advice of the royal wise man and the only thing he has to tell them is "I think the princess will use the potty when it pleases her to use the potty" and they wait and wait until one day the princess sees her Queen mother getting ready for the grand ball and when she bends over to pull up her royal stockings the princess notices the beautiful pantelettes she has on and says "those pantelettes please me" so they go shopping pick out the prettiest pantelettes in the land "Pantelettes fit for a princess" and she wears them home from the store, through playtime, even all the way through her snack of milk and cookies but all the sudden the princess can't sit still, she sits this way and that way she gets down on her hands and knees (clearly the girl needs to go potty) and all the maids start running to find her royal diaper but the princess doesn't want her diaper that would mean she'd have to take off her beautiful pantelettes she has on and finally decides she doesn't want her diaper she wants a potty and she ends up choosing "the plain one cause its the nearest" and thats what finally "Pleases the princess". I love the play on the story it has been one of my child's favorites even before she would have dreamed of using her potty. My daughter absolutely loves this story we've been reading it since she was 1 and I make it fun by putting on different voices for each character and I got to say when my daughter gets a little lazy about using the potty but when I remind her of the beautiful pantalettes she could be wearing just like the princess and it works like a charm. This book is really fun but definitely a "girls" book. But a must for any girl that loves fairy tales and needs a little push on the potty!

I've been reading this book to my son since he was 2 months old before bedtime and he LOVES it, especially when I say "boo... hooo... hoo". He smiles everytime I bring it out and looks at me funny if I bring something else out before bedtime. He loves to look at the pages and I do too! It's a simple, fun story that gives you the opportunity to perfect your mooing, mewing, barking and quacking skills. (I assume I'll be using these skills for a while).

I started reading this book to my daughter when she was 17-months-old. At that age, she was saying simple words, so she loved pointing at the pictures of the animals and saying "kitty" and "dog." I enjoyed making the animal sounds and having her repeat them. It's a fun story --- following the animals' attempts to soothe the crying baby --- and a fun book to read.

This is the best book we have to talk to our 15 month old about our coming baby. Since there are no words, we are able to use the words we've chosen ("there's a baby hiding inside mommy") for describing what is happening. She often gets up, comes over, and kisses my stomach when we're reading the book (this is not shown in the book).

Part of the book shows the parents getting into the car to go to the hospital. The child later goes to the hospital to see the baby. A few weeks ago we told our daughter that we were going to the hospital. She immediately got really excited and started signing and saying "baby!". She understood from just going through this book a few times.

This is a great book. It is an illustrated book, with no words, so you can make up the story yourself using your family's names. It goes through a lot of the transitions of pregnancy to having a baby, like getting the room and crib ready and visiting the doctor. Great gender neutral book as well. I am very pleased with this book.

I bought this for my 19 month old to begin to ready her for the arrival of her little sister. When reading past reviews I figured out that the story had no text printed. I decided to purchase anyway thinking it would be easy to make up our own story. The book is cute and pretty easy to compose your own story but would be better with SOME text. The pictures take you through what mom and big brother and dad do to get ready for new baby. Nice concept but could use some text.

Pro-Abortion Halloween Book!

Review Date: 2008-09-14
I was disgusted to read the latest incarnation of Corduroy that promotes UNICEF, the U.N. fund that is supposed to help children, but also assists in promoting abortion. Page 10 shows trick-or-treaters shouting, "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF"! The evidence against UNICEF's involvement in abortion was so overwhelming that the Catholic Church ceased all donations in 1996! UNICEF has only gotten worse since then from a pro-life perspective. I urge all pro-life parents NOT to purchase this book. You will be as shocked as I was to see Corduroy used to promote the United Nations and it's worldwide campaign to make abortion more available.

This book shamelessly uses Don Freeman's adorable bear character to illustrate a charmless trip through Halloween images. Lisa, Corduroy's endearing owner in the orignal book, is missing entirely, as is Corduroy's urban home. The original Corduroy is a favorite in our family, but we regret buying this one.

My two-year-old daughter LOVES this book. We read it at least four times a day. I bought it to teach her the traditions of one of my favorites holidays, Halloween, and it's been an amazing hit. She's so excited for Halloween this week, and it's because of this book! The illustrations are beautiful, and my daughter loves lifting the flaps. I didn't realize this until I had children, but it's difficult to teach little ones about holidays for the first time--they've never experienced them before, so they don't know what to expect. This book was so helpful in explaining costume parties, trick-or-treating, etc. I will admit--this is not the Corduroy I grew up with. This book has nothing to do with the original Corduroy, so if you buy this book thinking you'll be sharing the Corduroy of your childhood with your kids, you'll be disappointed. However, if you buy it knowing it has nothing to do with the original Corduroy, I think you'll be very pleased because your kids will love this book! I also recommend the Corduroy Christmas and Easter books!

This book is one of the best I've found to teach my 2-year old about the traditions of Halloween. The book is beautifully illustrated with autumn scenes of fallen leaves, pumpkin patches, and not-too-scary trick-or-treaters. I was able to reinforce many familiar objects (pumpkins, apples, and scarecrows) with my toddler while introducing her to new ones (Indian corn, skeletons, and witches) The lift-the-flaps were cleverly hidden on each page which contributed to her enjoyment and attentiveness. The only drawback I found was that it left my daughter longing for candy even though the book depicts Corduroy handing out both sweets and a jar of pennies to visitors.

At age 2-3 years, my son has enjoyed lifting the flaps on this charming book, but a few minor issues bother me as we read it. First, the trick-or-treaters say, "Trick-or-treat for Unicef!" Nothing against Unicef, but after the first couple of times reading this aloud, it struck me as odd and I decided to leave it at "Trick-or-treat." Unfortunately my son had already memorized the Unicef part and "corrects" me as we read. Second, at Corduroy's Halloween party everyone bobs for apples. Ewwww! Does anyone do that anymore? Finally, at the store Corduroy buys "everything he needs for his costume," but later we see his costume is the classic ghost: a sheet with eye holes. What exactly did he buy for *that*? Admittedly these are nitpicky points, however, and overall the book is an enjoyable intro to Halloween.
