My 15-month old son LOVES this book ever since he was 9 months-old. We read it every night before he goes to bed. Taro Gomi has captured simple creatures in life and have made them animated and good teachers. The illustrations are purely magical. I highly recommend this book to kids, young and old.

Our son loves this book - and we love reading it to him. It's such a great sentiment, that we can learn so much from those around us. We're connected to our friends, and each one has a gift that we can appreciate. And the illustrations are fantastic.

I have been collecting bilingual books to read to my children and to help our whole family learn Spanish. This is one of our favorites and one the kids will listen to without complaining about me reading in Spanish (which is a problem with some other books with more words on each page). I highly recommend this book and have been buying copies to give to friends.

If you have a toddler, you know how much they enjoy hearing the same story over and over again. This book is sure to be one of your little one's favorites. The simple pictures and truncated text make this a great book for toddlers. And because there's no real storyline to follow, you can skip a few pages here and there if you need to... at least, until your little one is old enough to catch onto you.

My Friends by Taro Gomi is a beautifully illustrated book about learning simple skills...with a little help from your friends. And in this story, all creatures (from the tiniest ant to the teachers at school) are your friends. My daughter loves this book, reciting page after page which friend teaches her what task. The overall message of this book is that a child can learn something from everyone and everything.
The artwork is delightful: colorful, simple, and crisp. The language sounds lyrical, even poetic, as you read it aloud. This book will capture the imagination of your child. Whenever we read it, my daughter gives me different examples of who has taught her what. It is a great conversation starter!
I recommend this engaging book for all toddlers, beginning readers, or anyone who enjoys a sweet story.

The layout of the book is really good - pages of the animal with a child doing the sign and the word on the opposing page, followed with all the pictures only on the back page. Animals seem to work especially well, and my son love's this book.

Every night we would read and practice our signs. By the time she was one year old, she could sign the signs from this book. Ok, her signs were not perfect but I knew what she was talking about. Learning signs has really helped with her communicating with us. I am so glad she learned the signs. Now, at 2 years old, she talks and uses the signs to help us understand.

My daughter is now 12 months old and she has been enjoying her Baby Signs books from the very beginning. When she was young she just enjoyed looking at the faces but now she selects them for story time and looks at them on her own - even making the signs as she reads the book to herself. These books definitely helped her pick up the signs and the pictures help her to link both the work and the object. Fabulous!
Great pictures but signs are not ASL!

Checked out this book for my 1 year old son and he loved the real pictures of kids and animals. However, I was disappointed because the signs are NOT American Sign Language signs. We ended up looking at the pictures in this book, while doing the ASL we already knew. I would recommend the baby sign books by Kim Votry and Curt Waller instead as they use real ASL.

I was REALLY disappointed by this book. My 2 year old daughter is our firstborn, but we have two adopted sons (3 and 5), and this book assumes that you only have one child that born and one in utero. It's not really for "non traditional" families (e.g. with adoptions, second marriages, etc.).
Additionally, half the book is about mommy going to the hospital, and not really helpful statements about the hospital either. It has a place to say the doctor's name several times (nothing about midwives or doulas) and talks about how doctors and nurses "help babies be born". We do home births anyway, so that's not applicable at all.
Also, it's really meant for children over the age of 4 or so and I agree with the other reviewers that it's really for girls.
The pictures are just generic pictures that don't really help a child understand much of anything... just some random pictures of pregnant people and infants that are a little too abstract for young children. You can add your own in several places, but several of the pictures they suggest are really for after the fact (a picture of the baby after it's born, a picture of the older and younger child together, etc.).
I read all the reviews and the description and didn't realize these things about it at all. I was hoping that it would talk more about pregnancy, the baby growing inside mommy and the whole pregnancy process.
If you really want to prepare your child for when you'll be in the hospital, this book talks about it a lot, but as for the overall adjustment I don't think it's of much use. I wouldn't have bought it if I'd realized that it was for older children and focused so much on the hospital.

I was glad to have the opportunity to read the reviews which encouraged me to purchase the book. WHAT A WONDERFUL IDEA for siblings awaiting the arrival of the newborn. I purchased 2 books for my grandchildren and the book, with the interaction between mother and sibling, helped them under-stand what might be happening in the next couple months and what they have to look forward to. When they'll be a little older they will enjoy

What an awesome idea for your first born during a new & wonderful time in her life. No longer will she be your sole focus. The book has lots of netural colors, and there are beautiful photos of mom's, daughters, babies and toddlers. There are lots of sentences with fill in the blanks to make this book taylor made for your daughter to make her own. Because of the photos I think this is more for girls then boys. Maybe some day down the road the author will make a book for boys and maybe even a book for children who are getting a sibling through adoption.
This book will help your child know that they are still special to you now & for always. A book they can go back to time and time again helping them processing everything that is going on to them, their mother and the newest member of their family.
This book starts out taking about how our family is having a baby and how this book is special and just for she... Mommy's tiny big girl. It has a space for a current family photo. The book then moves on to talk about when they where born, how much they weighed, how many inches long you where and what things you liked to do as a baby. There is space for your child to add a photo of the two of you or if your child is old enough to draw a photos or drawings that can be pasted to that page. There is even a page for the new babies' ultrasound photo. It then goes on to talk about how big your mommy is going to get and how different your mommy will look. It then talks about how mommy will back a bag & will go to the hospital. It also tells your child that the doctors & nurses will take care of your mommy and new baby. As well as who you will stay with and what fun things you might do while you are together. It talks about how you will be able to visit and meet your new sister or brother with a space for a your siblings photo. What is also cute is a page where you talk about a name for the new baby and if your child had a chance to name the baby what she'd name her or him.The last several pages talks about what a baby does and there is a space for a photo of your daughter and her new sibling.
This is such a smart and wonderful book! A perfect shower gift for anyone who has a daughter. And here's hoping that the author will also creating a book for boys, and another for siblings who are getting a sibling through adoption.

MY mommy's having a baby. Her friends had a party and they brought gifts for my new brother or sister. I was excited when there was a present for ME! It was the Mommy's Having a Baby
Book.
Mommy read the book to me and she wrote in the book. I drew pictures and mommy and me pasted pictures. We had so much fun and I learned a lot too. Mommy told me that the book is MY keepsake.

The Cheerios play books are favorites of mine, as gifts for toddlers. Their purpose, as my daughter pointed out, is to encourage children to eat more Cheerios, which they do! However, they also have fun and do a little learning along the way. How often is a child allowed to play with food, after all? There are simple illustrations on durable pages, with opportunities for matching, counting, and learning shapes. Small motor dexterity can be practiced, to place the Cheerios into the shallow recesses of the pages to create buttons on costumes, glasses on a cat, etc. This book is a good take-along size to fit into a tote bag (with some Cheerios, of course) for entertainment. Friends I've given this to say that their children really enjoy it!

I can't believe my first Amazon review is about a kids' book that touts a product! For the most part, I try to keep my kid away from all-too rampant marketing.
Anyway, the grandparents gave my now 20-month-old daughter this little book for Halloween and since then we've had it out a few times when she eats Cheerios (or the generic variety of same). Today as I was getting ready for work, my little one was sitting on the counter, noticed the Cheerios box and wanted some. I poured a few on the counter, after which she immediately said "down" and "book". I figured she was just being her fickle toddler self, so I let her down off the counter. She went running off to her room and emerged a few minutes, and thud noises, later with this book! I was pretty impressed that she made the association and riffled through all her other books to retrieve this one.
She does stick the Os in the little holes, but not perfectly. She seems to like the book okay, it is not a favorite, but obviously she has a fun little contextual association between it and O-shaped cereal!

This book was the first to catch my baby's attention. At as early as 9 months, he was selecting this book every night. He loves to pull the various flaps and moving parts himself. I've purchased other Maisy books since then, and while my son enjoys them very much, the ABC book is still his favorite. I'm buying a second copy now to replace the first one he loved to pieces.

The text and graphics are simple yet entertaining to the younger set -- the target audience. Beginning readers may also enjoy tackling this ONE. I have given this book several times, most recently to my 2-year old niece. She really seems to like it! The story is lovely, but the drawings and design are what make the book so touching and beautiful. Paul Rand always seemed to be able to see beyond the letters on the page, beyond the company name or slogan, and here he does the same, making the "one" and the "zero" not only typographical but narrative characters. It's just so clever and cute!

I've been impressed by the content of the 3 "History Pockets" books we've used in our homeschool (Ancient Civilizations, Ancient Egypt, and Ancient Greece). I think they would be really helpful for visual and tactile learners. Unfortunately, my DD hated all the cutting & pasting involved. She found it to be busywork.
I would recommend the "History Pockets" to students who don't mind all the prep work involved in making the folders/lapbook.

Great addition to history curriculum -especially for kids that love crafts!

I used this to suppliment another world history curriculum with my kindergardener and 4th grader. My little guy couldn't do everything, but he enjoyed the things he did. They both loved it. They are proud of the "books" that they each made. I will try their other products.
Worth the money - even for do-it-yourselfers!

I procrastinated months before buying this product, saying, "I can do this myself, I don't need everything planned out for me." Yes you CAN search the Internet and photocopy pages from library books and make your own lapbooks/history pockets, but most teachers/homeschoolers have very full plates and it is MUCH easier to use these history pockets as the basis for your project and then supplement with other stuff.
After I relented and purchased the Ancient Greece history pockets, I couldn't believe how easily the project fell into place, after weeks of neglect. You - and your kids - will be very pleased with the informative and interesting results.
I also purchased the Greek Myths literature pockets and am very pleased with those too.
Also, for what it's worth, my kids are in 1st & 2nd grade, more or less, not the 4-6 that is recommended for these pockets. So the pockets have appeal for a broad range of ages.
On the other hand, I did find it necessary to do a fair amount of prep work for them - photocopying the pages and cutting out some of the projects. If they were a couple of years older, the history pockets could have been done independently.

This is the third book we have of this kind. All 3 have been her favorites. This book has a bunch of animals in it and its colorful. I really like this book and my daughter does too. I would say this book and the others we have like it get the most use out of her book collection. Definately recommend

My three month old granddaughter loves this book. We read the names of the animals to her and talk about the colors. The pictures are bright, cheerful, and simple yet stimulating. I highly recommend it and will be buying the rest of the series.

This book is so terrific for little ones that my grandchildren wore out the first copy causing me to buy a second! A delightful book for babies to age 4.

My two-year-old loves this book. It has been one of her favorites for months now. She likes to match the pictures of animals in the book with her toy animals.
Good book, but a little complex for my 14-month-old

My daughter loves the Happy Baby books (her favorite is the Spanish/English Palabras/Words) and she likes this one, but I find the concepts in it to be a little complex. It has sections about animal patterns, matching animals with colors, etc. that are a little over her head. In a year or so this will probably be a good challenge for her, but right now it's a little too much. Still, a great book - she brings it to me regularly to "read" to her.

We've used the Bob books, Diego phonics, Curious George phonics and by far this is the best "set" of books for my 4 year old boy. Each book focuses on a different phrase, so the repetition of certain words builds confidence.
The stickers have been a great reward system, for us. Generally I am selective about when using rewards - I'd prefer my son learn to read simply for the enjoyment of reading, and not for the sticker - but I have to say that stickers work! I volunteer for 1st & 2nd graders who are "behind" their classmates (something I really don't agree with in our public schools) and stickers motivate them to read, even at that age. It also becomes a quick way for them to see how many books they've read.
I commend the teacher who started this set, and hope more educators are able to put their real-life expertise out for parents like me!

We tried the BOB books in addition to tons of other early reading books and we were always disappointed! They were too hard or easy and not progressive. The stories were boring.
We started this series of Books while my daughter was in Kindergarten. She loved them!!! Earning a sticker every time she correctly read a story was a HUGE incentive because after 3 stickers she moved on to the next story! The repetition was incredibly helpful with word recognition and the comprehension questions are a great tool that we now do with every story we read! We read this series all summer long and now my daughter is in an advanced reading group in first grade! I recommend them to anyone who has a child with a basic sight word list.

My daughter who turned 3 in April loves this book; she received it as a gift last Christmas. It's 10 little books that pull out of clear plastic sleeves. She likes to pretend to read, and the way these stories are written and illustrated, it is very easy for her to do so. I just bought a couple more in the series; I hope they're as good.

I recommend this book to anyone with a child ready to read. It is a step by step phonics based system. Other books I've looked at have black and white pictures or boring stories. The colorful pictures add to the story and I often hear my son laughing while he reads even the simplest books. I have both sets that are in Level One, and both sets for Level two. I'm sure I will be purchasing Level Three.
AWESOME for resistant readers!

My daughter LOVED this series!!! One comment though, the description has preschol readers as the reading level.. but actually the INDEPENDENT level is about a second grade level book. Nice pictures, easy text, graduated vocabulary, and high interest topics. I only wish they had MORE on the independent level than they do.
