This is the third book we have of this kind. All 3 have been her favorites. This book has a bunch of animals in it and its colorful. I really like this book and my daughter does too. I would say this book and the others we have like it get the most use out of her book collection. Definately recommend

My three month old granddaughter loves this book. We read the names of the animals to her and talk about the colors. The pictures are bright, cheerful, and simple yet stimulating. I highly recommend it and will be buying the rest of the series.

My daughter loves the Happy Baby books (her favorite is the Spanish/English Palabras/Words) and she likes this one, but I find the concepts in it to be a little complex. It has sections about animal patterns, matching animals with colors, etc. that are a little over her head. In a year or so this will probably be a good challenge for her, but right now it's a little too much. Still, a great book - she brings it to me regularly to "read" to her.

We've used the Bob books, Diego phonics, Curious George phonics and by far this is the best "set" of books for my 4 year old boy. Each book focuses on a different phrase, so the repetition of certain words builds confidence.

The stickers have been a great reward system, for us. Generally I am selective about when using rewards - I'd prefer my son learn to read simply for the enjoyment of reading, and not for the sticker - but I have to say that stickers work! I volunteer for 1st & 2nd graders who are "behind" their classmates (something I really don't agree with in our public schools) and stickers motivate them to read, even at that age. It also becomes a quick way for them to see how many books they've read.

I commend the teacher who started this set, and hope more educators are able to put their real-life expertise out for parents like me!

Best Early Reading Series Ever

We tried the BOB books in addition to tons of other early reading books and we were always disappointed! They were too hard or easy and not progressive. The stories were boring.

We started this series of Books while my daughter was in Kindergarten. She loved them!!! Earning a sticker every time she correctly read a story was a HUGE incentive because after 3 stickers she moved on to the next story! The repetition was incredibly helpful with word recognition and the comprehension questions are a great tool that we now do with every story we read! We read this series all summer long and now my daughter is in an advanced reading group in first grade! I recommend them to anyone who has a child with a basic sight word list.

My daughter who turned 3 in April loves this book; she received it as a gift last Christmas. It's 10 little books that pull out of clear plastic sleeves. She likes to pretend to read, and the way these stories are written and illustrated, it is very easy for her to do so. I just bought a couple more in the series; I hope they're as good.

I recommend this book to anyone with a child ready to read. It is a step by step phonics based system. Other books I've looked at have black and white pictures or boring stories. The colorful pictures add to the story and I often hear my son laughing while he reads even the simplest books. I have both sets that are in Level One, and both sets for Level two. I'm sure I will be purchasing Level Three.

AWESOME for resistant readers!

My daughter LOVED this series!!! One comment though, the description has preschol readers as the reading level.. but actually the INDEPENDENT level is about a second grade level book. Nice pictures, easy text, graduated vocabulary, and high interest topics. I only wish they had MORE on the independent level than they do.

If you are a novice at using a word wall or have had one in your classroom for some time, you will find this book to be a great, practical resource. It includes descriptions of many different kinds of word walls, not just the traditional wall with an alphabetical list of sight words. Also included are activities and lessons that you can use in conjunction with your word wall.

It's great to find children's books that are different.
I love the play on words and the quirky illustrations. My 15 month old girl can read along to the first few pages as they are words she recognises my everyday - MOMA (mama), Da Da (Daddy) & Dali (Dolly).
My little girl has "Fashion" as well and both books are become well worn!

What a pleasure it is to find a book worth relishing again and again for it's clever use of words and graphics arts to foster in young children a love of modern art. Like a quick trip to MOMA snuggled up on your own sofa, your toddler may become familiar with concepts and visuals that can only enrich their love of color and (and simple words which they soon memorize and "read" along with you) and entertain their imaginitive spirits. For your budding Warhol or simply the art lover in you, here is a fantastic exposure to modern art that allows your child to explore, to learn and laugh all at once.

We have several of the touch and feel books in our home and our two year old has always enjoyed them. Kids love touching different things and the touch and feel books give them several different textures to work on. My two year old just loves Halloween. He'll ask to read Halloween books all year round.

As with the other touch and feel books, this one has vivid and color photography to accompany the various textures your child gets to touch including a pumpkin, Pirates Beard, the fur of a black cat, and a wizards robe. One can, I suppose question the educational value of these books but why must all books be educational? Bottom line is that all of these books are fun for kids to read and touch.

A great look at introducing youngsters to cultural diversity

Dirty Sally
Whoever you are is great look at introducing youngsters to cultural diversity. "Culture" basically refers to commonalities that run through a group of people with a shared heritage. Sometimes children probably believe that her culture - way of doing things - is the "right" one and that others are a bit "funny." As you read Whoever You Are, you can begin to look at other cultures with your child, aim for an appreciation of differences. Eventually, this will lead to an increased appreciation of the incredible variety of human attributes, flexible thinking, and less prejudice and stereotyping. This type of conversation has to take place. That is why I wrote a children's' book entitled, Dirty Sally..The untold stories of mixed race kids who find a new identity, love, faith and forgiveness through GOD.
There is an interesting story behind the title. I was often taunted or teased about being biracial. Some of my family members and friends called me Dirty Sally. Dirty Sally is an old slavery term used to identify the descendants or offspring of Sally Hemings, a former slave and the late President Thomas Jefferson. Sally Hemings was biracial her mother was ½ white and ½ black and her father white. This book focuses on the misconceptions surrounding racial identity and the importance of choosing one's racial identity. Dirty Sally is a must read not only for inter-racial families, but for all parents hoping to instill in their children a sense of understanding and compassion. I believe that change requires resistance and within that process we can help heal some of the wounds that continue to inflict on racially mixed children. Purchase available on Amazon.com the ISBN# is 9781432707743

We love the 'Bear' books and having been reading all of the stories lately even the Christmas one. In this story Bear wakes up in spring and is hungry. His friends go with him in search of food, but bear wants more and more. He is a bear after all. It's a fun story but not as good as the other 'Bear' books in my opinion. Plus the idea of wanting more and more is one that needs to be approached carefully.

Anything that can keep my 2 year-old son's interest for long periods of time and for several months is a winner in my book!

This book has pages for: Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Monster's Inc, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, The Incredibles and Cars. It is very high quality with a cushioned cardboard cover and nice thick board book pages, so it has been durable and stood up to my son's "tough love."

My son will sit and find all items in the whole book. Several months later he still brings it to us to do with him. He quickly learned the point and can identify all items, and still loves it. There are advanced activities that are great and we are just starting them.

I reccommend this book, you will love the big bright pages, super quality and your child will love this activity around characters and stories they already know. The price is absolutely on for the quality of these books.

I have a son who is soon to be two. We read a lot of children's books, and it always amazes me at how many don't flow very well in terms of text. The text in this book is simple but very well-written. I am only giving it 4 stars only because I believe it would have been a better book for a younger child. He loved it for a short period of time, but a year ago it would have interested him more. It's a great book to use when your child is just beginning to be interested in having books read to him/her.

I love all of the Gertie and Friends books, but this one is probably my favorite. The illustrations are simple, and yet full of interesting tidbits you can help your child find. It's amazing how expressive these little goslings are. I appreciate that the story is short and sweet. My daughter is not yet old enough to enjoy longer stories, but she is fully able to sit through this one.

Review Date: 2007-04-14
Ollie the Stomper is a follow-up to Olivier Dunrea's Gossie and Gertie series for baby/preschool readers. Ollie is the younger brother to the older goslings. And like younger brothers everywhere, he follows the bigger kids around. You see, "Gossie wears bright red boots" and "Gertie wears bright blue boots."

Ollie stomps around after them, wanting boots, too, as the bigger kids have adventures (very gentle adventures, like jumping over a puddle, or hiding in a pumpkin patch). Finally Ollie takes a stand, standing up on an overturned bucket and demanding: "I want boots!" Gossie and Gertie each give him a boot, though he learns that boots may not be as desirable as he had previously expected.

This story is a natural as a board book edition. Each page has a short, five or six word sentence and a self-contained picture. For much of the book, Ollie is on the left-hand page, while Gossie and Gertie are on the right-hand page, with parallel actions and word choices (Ollie stomps, Gossie and Gertie romp, for example). The pictures of Ollie are priceless. Even though his face is mostly beak, Dunrea is able to convey a range of emotions through Ollie's body language, eyes, and spiky feathers.

This book is sure to please preschoolers who like to stomp, tromp, and romp, and jump over puddles. And who doesn't love goslings? The board book edition will stand up to the many retellings that are likely to be requested.

This book review was originally published on my blog, Jen Robinson's Book Page, on April 12, 2007.
