The Life Recovery Bible is a very inspirational book that goes along with the 12 Steps. The original 12 Steps were based on Biblical principals, so what better way than to read THE WORD as it relates to the Steps. It takes on new meaning for all who are in recovery.
A great recovery tool for the Christian or anyone

My husband and I have been using the recovery Bible for quite some time and have given many away to people in recovery. The meditations on the steps and principles of the program and also the Serenity Prayer are just a wonderful help to us in our recovery.

As a hospital chaplain working largely with Dual Diagnosis patients I find the Recovery very helpful. Very important is that the book gives Bible references for each of the 12 steps in the "12 Step Program". Then, there are many very helpful articles throughout the book helping the patients apply Scriptural principles to their problems.

If you want to get to know God in a way that will change how you live everyday, this is the book to help you on that journey. Biblically accurate and a study that you can do on your own or in a group. There are also teaching DVD's that can be purchased of Kay Arthur's teaching for each chapter. I highly recommend this study.

Our ladies Sunday school class has been working through this book together. The chapters are about the right length to do in a 45 minute class. We read the chapters and think about the questions during the preceeding week then discuss together. We have found the book to be an excellent study of the names and character of God and may do another of the books in this series.

These are the Hebrew names that the chosen people called on the God of our salvation. He is a God who sees, is solomn, is everywhere, is a provider, the most high God, the Lord of Hosts, is the Lord of battles, He is the all sufficient One. He is GOD!
Great teaching tool to understand and know who God is and how He can be all these things in your & my life.

As the faith formation director of a small rural parish, I wear several hats and I recently inaugurated a middle school youth group for our pre-teens. How to get Catholic kids this age to read scripture? How to plan scripture-based programs on timely topics that pre-teens will engage in and that untrained volunteers and kids can lead? This Bible has filled those needs beautifully and then some. Within the Bible are 21 glossy sections, each focused on a timely topic (i.e., anger, peer pressure, responsibility) with scripture references, Church teaching and discussion questions. (The publisher also offers a leader's guide and music CD to enhance each topic session.) The kids love it! And parents tell me that their kids are actually reading their Bibles at home, on their own, without coaxing or prodding! The volunteer leaders love it, too, because they can use the leader's guide and CD to put together a GREAT session for the kids effortlessly. Fireside's given us a wonderful tool!

I am very impressed with this Bible along with the Music CD and Activities Workbook (these activities can be viewed on-line and printed for your use). I love the many themes that are spread throughout the Bible and the Activities Workbook & Music CD. Great for use with teens young and old. The accompanying church teachings along with each theme can even be used with adults who are in the process of becoming Catholic. I highly recommend this product. I was hesitant at first because I've been using the Catholic Youth Bible but this is very user friendly.

This is a good, N.A.B. bible, with excellent inserts on Catholic prayers, saints, and traditions. I do find the The N.A.B. translation and footnotes at times difficult and better suited for adults. I wish there was a simpler translation for teens along with inserts that would be more tied into the passages at hand. But overall this is a great resource and comes in an attractive cover.
The best period.

We compared this and the St. Mary's Press Catholic Youth Bible. This is simply more complete and thorough from a Catholic standpoint. The colorful and thematic pages really re-enforce positive and upbeat Catholic thinking and practice of the faith from a teen's perspective. The authors did an outstanding job of writing on a teen's level and choosing pertinent subjects to address. It is also the lowest cost Catholic Youth Bible on the market that we found. We highly recommend this Bible for Catholic youth and those who instruct them.

This book is one that my daughter needed to have as a requirement for religion class, but one that she will keep for years to come. It is really well written, and on a teenage level, not as if someone "old" wrote it for them. There are many helpful items contained inside from peer pressure to religious beliefs that will benefit her throughout her teen years.

Reinventing Jesus is a an excellent exegesis of the Orthodox New Testament texts vis-a-vie the Gnostic texts using internal and extra-Biblical evidence. I had been exposed to some of the concepts of this type of study when I took a course on ancient Israel in graduate school, and found its extension to this topic of great interest.
I have to admit that after reading the very well balanced account of the two sets of texts, that they are very different from one another, and that the survivor simply met the needs of the people of the time more fully. I'm not certain that this has to do with their being "closer" to the teachings of Jesus, however, as almost everyone who witnessed the events of this time probably had his or her own take on the situation. I suspect the entire 1st Century was spent deciding just what the message actually was, and ultimately it came down to two almost opposite concepts. The Gnostic notions of Christianity are much more esoteric, exclusive, and intellectual and focus on perfecting "the self," while those of orthodoxy are more directive, inclusive, require belief more than introspection and focus on others.
I'm not certain however, that I agree with the authors when they insist that the Gnostic texts were later. While I agree that an argument from absence is not a strong one, I also believe that absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. The secrecy of the Gnostic teachings would almost guarantee that they would not be committed to writing as early as the more open and inclusive teachings of what became orthodoxy. I'm more surprised that they were put on paper at all. This tendency to secrecy and elitism is probably why they did not survive as doctrines into modern times.
I also agree that, far from dictating the content of the new imperial religion or suppressing alternatives, Constantine's primary motive was consensus, order and peace in the kingdom--this one, not the next one. He was nothing if not a pragmatist. That he remained a pagan himself until converting on his deathbed suggests that he had very little religious stock in the outcome of the council of Nicea at that time.
A superb discussion of the topic.

An Excellent Work of Apologetics

In recent years there have been a number of works attempting to undermine any traditional belief in Christianity. Likewise, there have been a number of Christian apologetics books designed to counter them. I found this particular one to be very interesting and it has a number of very appealing aspects.
For one, this book is a work written by scholars who are specialized in their subject. The authors focus a fair amount of the book on textural criticism. Some scholars such as Bart Earhman and some members of the Westar Group (Jesus Seminar)have been very critical of the New Testament in this regard and the authors seek to respond. Komoszewski, Sawyer, and Wallace also do a fine job refuting supposed links between Christianity and pagan religions as well as theories found in Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code." This book is more detailed and technical than the works of some apologetics such as Strobel, but generally avoids getting tedious. Actually, I think it does a good job attempting to bring a complicated subject such as textual criticism down to a lay audience. "Reinventing Jesus" received some very good endorsements from people such as Gary Habermas and Paul L. Maier. The endnotes are quite detailed and worth looking at as well. Overall, this book was an enjoyable and informative reading experience. I would also recommend Craig Evan's book "Fabricating Jesus" and some of Paul L. Maiers books such as "In the Fullness of Time."

Sectarianism not scholarship

The authors are sectarian scholars at sectarian institutions, not really scientific biblical scholars. They assume but do not demonstrate that the Pauline-Hellenistic church knew the real Jesus. They ignore entirely his brother James who led the earliest followers of Jesus and knew him best. The Gospels were written under the influence of Paul's invention of his own Jesus, a Jesus that James did not know or agree with. One wants real biblical scholarship not this sort of special pleading. Dallas is not the place to find out the truth about the real Jesus; it is the place for redneck Christianity.

Reinventing Jesus contains a well thought out and scholarly introduction to a number of issues currently being discussed within New Testament scholarly circles, and I'd wholeheartedly recommend it to the layman in high school, college or the workforce, and also to the scholar. This book also served as a great primer for me into the work of Wallace and Sawyer, and Komoszewski's book on the deity of Christ co-authored with Robert Bowman is on its way to me now!
The book covers a large range of topics including oral tradition, textual criticism, early church history, Christology, and the newly internet-revived pagan copycat thesis. Komoszewski et al address (but also in some cases, build upon) the arguments of both popular and academic writers, providing a fair yet critical evaluation of the claims of authors such as Bart Ehrman, Acharya S, Robert M. Price, and Freke and Gandy. They also provide a list of books for further reading in each topic they write about, giving the reader an opportunity to move on once passing the popular introduction to these issues to more academic sources.
All in all, great book, and I would be pleased to see this cohort assemble again for another quality work.

This is my second copy of The Strong's Concordance I've purchased. Both copies appear to have a consistently good print quality. Although this book is excellent for finding the English words in the King James Bible to gain their meaning in Hebrew and Greek, it does not show you the various English words translated from each Hebrew or Greek word.
However, if you're only going to own one concordance, then this is the one to have!

Strong's Concordance, like any concordance, is very helpful in finding verses or doing studies on how a particular English word is used in Scripture. It is based on the KJV.
But what makes this concordance unique is that it indicates the underlying Hebrew or Greek word for the English word. Every Hebrew or Greek word is also numbered. Other Hebrew and Greek reference works are available that are coded to these Strong's Concordance numbers. Also included in this Concordance is a short Hebrew and Greek lexicon. This enables the non-Hebrew or Non-Greek reader some access to the original languages.
But it should be noted, using such resources is NOT the same as actually learning Hebrew or Greek. And far too many people seem to think they know what a verse "really" means by looking up a word in this concordance, getting the number of the Hebrew or Greek word and checking the simple dictionary in the back. Far too many times, I have had people email me with some strange ideas derived in this manner.
The problem is, just looking up a word in a simple dictionary like the one included here is not what you would call an exhaustive word study. And to make matters worse, this dictionary was produced in the 1800s, but much about the Greek language has been discovered since then. So the definitions are not always reliable.
Moreover, once you actually learn Hebrew and Greek and work with the original language texts, you will realize there is much more to the meaning of a word than can be expressed in a simple dictionary. The various shades of meaning can only be discovered by the use of more exhaustive lexicons that discuss how the word is used throughout Scripture and in extra-biblical literature.
It was such much more exhaustive resources that I utilized in working on my Analytical-Literal Translation of the New Testament: Third Edition (ALT). I never bothered referring to a simple and less than reliable resource like this dictionary.
That said, this concordance does have value. Use it as an introduction to working with the original languages. But remember it is just that, an introduction. Don't think you are somehow studying the Hebrew or Greek because you can use a number to look up Hebrew or Greek word in a simple dictionary.
Also, if you use a version other than the KJV, it is helpful to also have a concordance based on that version. That is why I came out with a Complete Concordance to the Analytical-Literal Translation: Second Edition for users of my version.

Also, if you use a version other than the KJV, it is helpful to also have a concordance based on that version. That is why I came out with a Complete Concordance to the Analytical-Literal Translation: Second Edition for users of my version.

This thorough and scholarly resource book is an invaluable guide to the process of determining the meaning of Old Testament passages. It contains examples and though it is written for scholars and pastors, it is accessible (and provides helpful guidance) to the layperson, such as myself, that desires to develop a less superficial understanding of scripture. The bibliography in the back is terrific and is probably worth the cost of the book by itself. The updated bibliography in the revised edition is worth buying it even if you already own prior editions.

This book is essential for students of Hebrew. This belongs with HALOT and Waltke/O'Connor as a book that the exegete cannot live without.

This book has been uniquely encouraging for me through recent difficulties. I have given away several copies to friends who are facing different types of trials. They, too are finding encouragement and passing copies of this valuable book along. I originally heard of the book in Chondra Pierce's book about battling depression, Laughing in The Dark. God used the book to help her through difficult times. This book is easily digestible in devotional-like paragraphs and chapters. It's not as intimidating or heavy as many books that seek to encourage, but tend to overwhelm, seem to be.

i liked: these 10 promises can be lived by during both challenging times and good times. author does an excellent work of outlining god's desire of moving us out of weakness away from him to boldness near him through his promises. each chapter begins with a red sea rule, a promise, then quotes a bible passage from exodus as its foundation. then through the chapter and sub-chapters you are taken on a journey of experiences and stories to illustrate the meaning of each promise. every chapter and sub-chapter is filled with scripture quotes and quotes from historical persons. a wonderful little book packed with great reading. i disliked: none found.

God used this book to bring me thru a hard time in my life. God showed me that, when there seems to be no way thru or around a problem, He will make a way. He did just that for me. I have given about 2 dozen "Red Sea Rules" books away, most of the people I give them to come back and say "God did a wonderful work in my life thru this book" Jackie Wolf

This is a wonderful book. Following the biblical pattern of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea the author helps you look at life's difficult problems in a new light and gives you guidelines for "getting thought" tough times.
I recommend this book to anyone!

It was too much and dissapointing that we really couldn't do it without the DVD's and they are too expensive, so it turned out to be a waste of money.

Awesome bible study. Our group watched the video one week, then the following week went over the book so there was some accountability. =) There is no certain "level" that a person has to be spiritually to get into this study. It will increase the faith of anyone who wants to believe what God says not just believe in Him.
