I was hoping for an unbiased overview, not someone's opinion on how God sees Nephilim, or a lesson in languages and comparisons. I guess I'll have to keep looking.

Great addition to Liz's Bad Girls series!Review Date: 2008-08-08
Liz brings these women to life and shows that although they and we are separated by many centuries, we're quite a bit alike. There's much we modern-day women can learn from those ancient girls and their trials and tribulations, and in the process, we can strengthen our own relationship with God.
Slightly Bad Girls leaves you hungering to learn moreReview Date: 2008-08-08
I especially loved the way she brought it to how modern women today would be like those of old. I loved the fact that God can love flawed women and men as far as that goes. Because you learn also of the flaws of the men of God too. You learn they weren't perfect but yet God loved them.
However Leah and Rachel left me wondering why God blessed Leah more than Rachel - an answer that still plagues me.
As a Bible teacher, Liz has left me hungering to research and learn more about these women. It seems most all Bible teaching at church is focused at men and on men in the Bible. The women are left unseen and even men could profit from understanding the women of the Bible. After all it might help them relate to their wives.

"Excellent, but probably a bit beyond her intended audience."Review Date: 2006-01-01
I love Kay. She always seeks to make real-world applications. She does this so well for adults, I was curious to see how she would do with kids. In summary--not quite as well.
This book could be better described as "How to teach your kids the Bible". It has wonderful precepts and concepts, but these will be better used by adults FOR young children than BY those children.
Teens will be OK with these concepts, but I doubt a teenager would pick up a book with this cover.
If you have teenagers who are really into specific books of the bible, I would suggest (for Revelation at least) "Dragons, Grasshoppers & Frogs!".
For general bible study for teens, I think "What the Bible is all About" by H. Mears would be a better choice.
Again--Kay's precepts and concepts here are great. They are just a bit above the level of the audience for which they are directed.

In short, this book has become a treasure in my library and I am grateful to Henry Virkler and Karelynne Gerber Ayayo for writing it (and revising it - 2nd edition). Thank you both.

Indespensible Edition for the Koine StudentReview Date: 2008-09-20
Translation: This edition has two: interlinear (parallel with the Greek) and the NRSV in the margins. Both are excellent. The interlinear translation helps identify obscure phrases and idioms and the NRSV is a wonderful aid to shaping one's translation. That said, the NRSV's only negative qualities are in its "gender-inclusive" language, rendering "brothers and sisters" for "adelphoi". This may bother some, inserting a meaning that is not literally present in the original, but otherwise the NRSV is impeccably accurate to the best of my knowledge.
Aesthetics: This is a big deal for a Greek NT. If the Greek font is ugly (take the revolting UBS font, for example) it can really kill the mood. But this Greek font is gorgeous and a pleasure to read. Likewise, all type, though small, is clear and easy on the eyes.
Durability: Exceptionally well-bound. The hardcover binding is sewn and withstands tremendous abuse. However, the pages are onionskin-thin, so turn them carefully.
Size: Ideal. Large enough to place on a desk and use as a translation exercise, small enough to plop in your lap and read for hours. 913 pages are condensed into an inch of volume, but it's never overwhelming. This is a perfectly sized volume for study or reading.
Price: Unmatchable. All combined factors above rate a price only a hair above fifteen dollars. If you wanted an interlinear New Testament, what on earth are you waiting for? Wait no longer! This is the best interlinear this amount of money can buy. Period.
Excellent Choice, regardless of your translation of choiceReview Date: 2007-12-29
What is really important, I discovered, especially for a Greek newbie like me is that the second of these two has significantly larger print for both the English and the Greek, and it is therefore far easier to find the verse I am seeking, when in search of a particular word. Added to this the fact that Brown and Comfort place both chapter and verse numbers at the start of every verse makes the passage in question even easier to find. Marshall may also have some value if you are partial to the NRSV and you don't have an NIV translation, this is a way to satisfy two needs with one book, except that the marginal translations in Marshall are even harder to read than the Greek and interlinear translation.
Marshall's text is not without its virtues, although I consult it rarely. The first is that the NASB and NIV marginal translations are divided by titles dividing the sections, just as you may find in a study bible. This makes it just a bit easier to zero in on the 8 - 16 verses you are looking for, since the headings, such as Luke's `The Parable of the Tenants' is so distinctive. Both volumes also include notes from the NASB, NIV, and NRSV translators, however, I don't use these either, since the same notes are in my NRSV study bible, and, again, my primary objective is simply to find THE EXACT Greek word used in a particular context. From there, I can do my own research in the dictionaries. So, regardless of which English translation you use, I prefer Brown / Comfort for their readability.

A revelation!Review Date: 2008-01-10
bookReview Date: 2008-01-01
It is the type of book where you can always look for a deeper meaning, which the footnotes help greatly with, but simply reading it for what it is you're still able to get a lot out of it. Obviously you can's take everything seriously, there are many metaphors used. But many of the stories teach simple morals that still are prevalent today.
With out a doubt you could find a more appealing book to read than Genesis, but its still worth picking up. It been very influential to many people and appears countless times in other pieces of literature, also its short and uses relatively simple language.

Alter shows Genesis as a work of literature. This doesn't mean that it holds no timeless truths. Rather the reverse. The fact that Genesis was written with a spirit beyond that found in a mere journalistic account make it more valuable not less.
This is one of those books where in the footnotes are longer than the text. Through these, Alter passes on wisdom from commentators throughout the ages.
The stories of Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham and Sarah, Jacob, and Joseph we all remember from Sunday school. Alter's work brings them to life in a way nothing I've seen ever has before. If you revere the Bible, you owe it to yourselve to buy this book.

Better than the companion grammar "Basics of Biblical Hebrew".Review Date: 2007-12-21
There are many inflected verbal forms in this workbook that are not broken down into their stem, tense, person, number, or gender, and all you are given is their inflected definition at the bottom of the page. Treat these words as if they were vocbulary words, and memorize them in their current form.
For example, the Hebrew word "vay-yomer" means "And he said". This is a Hebrew word in the imperfect state with what is called the "vav/waw conversive". However, the workbook does not tell you this information. It only tells you that "vay-yomer" means "and he said". Treat this word as if it were a vocabulary word, and memorize both it's current form and definition. By doing this, you're actually simulating natural learning process. You will be picking up on prefixes, suffixes, and inflected verbal stem forms without actually being formally introduced to them, so that when the time comes to introduce them in your Hebrew grammar study, you will already be familiar with them in an intuitive sense.
If what I said sounds like a bunch of jibberish, I'll put it another way. Suppose a someone said, "Tim went to the store, him will be back later", and you overheard it. Naturally, you know from natural exposure to the English langauge that this is improper grammar. The word "him" is the objective form of "he", while "he" is the subjective form which should be used in place of "him" in the example sentence given. However, we native English speakers don't "think" about making such a transition in our minds. We speak the language based on how we've learned it through natural exposure, and thus we know intuitively to say "he", and not "him" in such instances. The same methodology is applied in this workbook for certain words, especially verbal forms. This is truly important when learning Hebrew because the verbal system in Hebrew can be VERY cumbersome at first glance.

A Beautiful Book with Wide AppealReview Date: 2008-04-19
The only text is at the beginning and it is a charming translation of a poem that summarizes the story of Noah. The poem is delightful in and of itself- Spier did a great job of translating.
The illustrations are then left without text, which is very refreshing, since there are so few picture books nowadays. I enjoy leisurely paging through this book with my young daughter, talking about the pictures in and of themselves, as pieces of art and as pictures that tell a story. I feel that the pressure is off in terms of trying to finish a sentence or a story when there is no text there.
In addition, this book is appropriate for Muslim families as well, since the illustrations (and beginning poem) are sufficiently vague as to accommodate for the small differences in the telling of the story in the Qu'ran and the Bible.
