Very informative kit. Many people hear the word foreclosure or pre-foreclosure and automatically think, bargain or a steal or buying a home for dirt cheap; but there's a lot more to it than that and this book gives you a very good insight of how the process works. Buying distressed Real Estate can be time consuming, costly and a real challenge, as you will find out after reading this book.

I spent a weekend reading the book. Loved it. The author knows what he is talking about. He also has a good website where you can download the proper letter you should send out to people in distress.
I own a foreclosure company and have adapted some of his techniques, nevertheless (not to take away any merit from the authorm but instead to enhance the next version of his book) our company principals felt like the letters were a little bit to hard on the person that is loosing their homes. And sometimes talking this hard to people could have negative consequences. We have to understand that these are individuals that when loosing their homes, can go into denial and sometimes enter into very heavy depression.
If you do decide to get into this process of sending out letters the only thing you should try and add to them, is to let the people know that you are there because you really care to help them out and you are not there to make a quick buck! People will give you their homes if you are upfront, honest and ethic about what you are trying to do.
Don't forget to add a little note written by hand thats tells the reader that you: "really care to help them!"
Other than that, you should buy the book if you are into the business of Real Estate.

This is the fourth book on foreclosures that I have read in the last two weeks and it is by far the best. copywrite is 2005. The author says less than 10% of the people reading this book will ever buy a foreclosure property. He also says, "The number one reason most beginners strike out in this business is they overestimate the current market value of the very first pre-foreclosure property they purchase". "Market value" is not the same as "current value". "Assessed value" is not the same as "appraised value". The author explains things in detail. He also gives you many, many sources online where you can gather much needed information to make quality business decisions. The many online sources alone justify the purchase of this book, but it is the author's honest handling of all phases of the foreclosure process that should make this your first foreclosure book. If you are currently in foreclosure buy this book and help yourself negotiate. If you are thinking of buying a foreclosure buy this book and learn why not to "purchase at auction on the courthouse steps" and why you should always pay a professional to do a through title search. One more thing. Some properties are not insurable. This book can easily save you thousands of dollars.

The book is in excellent condition, but try to find out the reason for the delay by the post office, and try to avoid it. It does not make sense to receive the book a month after I make the order, especially I have upgraded the posting service.

I teach undergrad business and economics, and have found this text to be very effective with my students, particularly as a follow-up to macro 101. One of the best things about the text is that it is well integrated; other texts seem somewhat choppy or fragmented.

This is an excellent undergraduate text on financial institutions and monetary economics. The exposition is rigorous yet avoids abstruse math. The best part is the section on monetary economics, where the author dispenses with IS/LM analysis and instead directly analyzes aggregate supply and demand. He writes from the perspective of a central banker (which he was), showing how central banks use interest rates to influence inflation and output. The writing is quite clear, and the numerous sidebars on historical and contemporary issues are excellent. Although some subjects (such as exchange rates) could have been developed in greater depth, this is a great textbook overall.
Ideological footnote: Many undergraduate econ books assume (more or less explicitly) that disturbances in the macroeconomy are eventually self-correcting. This book has a somewhat different starting place: it takes it for granted that regulators will oversee the banking system and that central bankers will act to close output gaps and keep inflation under control (in fact, the latter assumption is built into the author's construction of the aggregate demand curve). According to the author, modern central banks have developed a fairly good understanding of business cycles and know how to moderate them through the use of monetary instruments. Let's hope he's right.

I've read the books of Mishkin and Hubbard, also well written pieces.
However, Cecchetti seems to be able to explain concepts with more clarity and in a way that makes one remember the various theories long after reading the book.
He should try to develop further the chapter on futures and give more emphasis on hedging, since this is the trend financial markets are moving towards these days, without having to impinge on books devoted solely to the topic.
He may also want to expound more on the chapter covering foreign exchange and international markets, to make the book more relevant to international readers.
on the chapter on monetary policy, since he touched on foreign central banks he may also wish to write about how other countries implement monetary policy, esp how the Bank of England uses the repo market to conduct money easing/contraction.
Am looking forward to a much-improved version in the future.

This is my first review on Amazon. I recently purchased the book Advertise, Promote and Market Your Business or Website by Bruce C. Brown. As a professional artist, my chosen profession is extremely competitive and I've found many artists who have been running successful businesses for many years, which puts a new artist at a big disadvantage. I found this book very user friendly for someone who doesn't have a degree/experience in marketing or seo, but needs to become more marketing and internet savvy.
My favorite sections are:
Generating More Trafic to Your Website
Search Engine Optimization
I found many helpful tips in these two sections. The only suggestion I would make for improving the book would be more resources added and many more case studies.
Any comments or critiiques of this review are welcome via email from my website.

My mother does a lot of research online and is a very active member of places like YouTube, etc. She's been interested in marketing some of her own creative work online and this seemed to be the perfect guide. Although she has found out some of the info contained in this book on her own, this organizes the info all in one place and makes it easily accessible. She seemed very pleased with the book and says it will make her online life much easier.

This book blames everyone but the consumer for their problems. This includes the government, credit card companies, etc. It is true they target the consumer and hope the consumer is dumb enough to get themselves into their web, however, the ultimate person we should be targeting is the consumer and educate them to be responsible for their actions and quit blaming others!

Brilliant ideas that anyone can use to save money. More than just a how-to, it teaches a whole new mentality, and a creative viewpoint that spills over into every area of life. Once bit by the Tightwad bug, you will never go back to wasting your money. Amy Daczyczyn also has a wonderfully whimsical sense of humor that makes me wish she lived next door. Good reading.

I enjoyed this book tremendously. She has a great style of writing and a lot of the information was helpful. Perhaps even more than the specific ideas, I think it helps me come up with my own ideas, be more conscious of unnecessary spending and less wasteful in general. I have already bought another one for someone else, who also loved it.

This is the essential book to have in your library. It is all three of the Tightwad Gazette books in one handy big, giant book. Written by Amy Dacyczyn who refers to herself as the Frugal Zealot, It is the most informative book on not just saving money, but adjusting you mindset to make it fun. I love the articles, It helps me come up with creative strategies to save my money for the things I want in life. I once loaned out my individual copies of this book to my brother's now ex -wife and regretted it bitterly as I never got them back. Now I have the Bigger compendium and It does NOT leave my house, not for love or money. I am going to buy more copies to give as gifts. One more note, I worked in the used book business for ten years all together and in that time, this book was often requested and rarely traded in, Just like all good books. Thank you, Frugal Zealot, I couldn't do as much as I do without your constant, in book form, support and guidance. You truly do change lives.

I am leading a frugal life these days after getting out of the rat race and finding that I have a great desire to not be a working stiff. Working part-time means an iron fisted budget. "Your Money or Your Life" is what got me started on this path, and "The Tightwad Gazette" was published with people like me in mind. I had heard about the newsletter for years, and finally thought to read this book.
As other reviewers have noted, frugality isn't a religion. You can pick or choose how involved you want to be. For me, the crucial discovery has been that there are many things I can abstain from without noticing a huge difference in the quality of my life. I will never give up travel... it is an essential part of my life. But there are other day-to-day things I don't miss at all. Since reading this book a few months ago, I have started making my own pizza and bread (VERY good suggestion; it cuts the price in half and is surprisingly easy to make, even without a food processor), I'm more conscious of turning off lights, and I've assembled a price book. None of this was difficult and it was fun. In the first two months, I managed to save $300 from an already meager budget.
What is difficult about this? Like any habit, it is a discipline. I have lost hours making bread dough, bargain hunting, and making my own tomato sauce. But I find that I enjoy the feeling of taking care of myself and not wasting money. I had great fun assembling the price book. I now know the lowest prices to expect for a lot of items, and it's fun to be on top of things.
As a single person, a lot of "The Complete Tightwad Gazette" did not apply to me. I skimmed over sections on kids' craft projects and clothes issues, of which there are a lot. I would say I picked up only a few ideas I'll implement over the long term, but it was still fun reading about others' habits. This is a fun book, well worth the price.

Living frugally while raising a family and sending my husband to college full time while living on one income in Los Angeles is no easy task. This book was a waste of my time. It includes ways to make your typewriter tape last longer and how to save on encyclopedia sets. If saving time is as important to you as saving money, then this book is not for you. If you are searching for the book used here on Amazon.com, then you are already ahead of the game.

I read this book a while ago when I took an interest in personal finance. It includes lots and lots of helpful tips like describing how to freeze food (wrap bagged bread inside a grocery bag to prevent freezer burn) and describing how they and their friends have saved money in the past.
I don't know the source, but there is a triangle concerning goods. The three sides are price, quality, and time and you can't have all of them. You have to sacrifice quality if you want a better price in the same amount of time. The book emphasizes planning ahead and looking around. This book, like other books on the same topic, encourages creative thinking. Rather than going straight to a retail store to buy a new entertainment center, check yard sales, craigslist, etc. because people give those away all the time when they move. This can be applied to most purchases. A little preparation and brainstorming goes a long way. The Economides family really gets this across in their book.

This is a book I'd recommend to select readers, and which I'm happy I read. It seems to combine some basic financial advice with the general idea of consuming less, and consuming more mindfully while we're at it. The first substantive chapter is probably my favorite, all about grocery shopping. It drills down to some very specific tips for grocery shopping, but the main theme sort of screamed out at me: The more trips you make to the store, the more you spend, and specifically - the more you spend on impulse buys. Plan ahead. Make fewer trips to the store. When you're there, stick with the list! Many of the chapters were about things that I feel didn't really speak to me - buying used cars, planning inexpensive vacations, finding inexpensive medical insurance. Although I have no children yet, I really enjoyed one of the ending chapters about having children earn their weekly allowance and teaching them how to budget and save. I think that chapter's great, actually, and I hope I remember this book when I do have kids! I think the domestically-minded will enjoy this book - anyone living on one parent's income, any families (with or without kids) with an eye to living more frugally. People who are horrified by concepts of planning ahead probably won't do too much with the book's advice.

Didn't really glean any advice for myself, but it was a quick interesting read and I think it would be helpful to inspire frugality in those who are just learning the skill.

As a financial advisor I've read a lot of books about investing; Recently my little brother asked me for a book to get started. This is the one I truly recommend above all the rest. A truly professional yet simple read.

This book describes the basic ways to invest your money. It covers markets and currency, stocks, bonds, indexes, mutual funds, ETFs, options, futures, and other alternative investments (briefly).
The format is very easy to read - there are lots of diagrams and pictures, which actually provides a good break from the large amount of dense information provided. One thing I liked (but that some may find annoying) is the frequency of repeating definitions. Between various sections, concepts are often defined multiple times. I found this useful, since it reminded me what a certain concept was without having to go back and find it earlier in the book.
In general, the information is pretty accurate and up-to-date. However, I noticed 1 error on the idea of fluctuation in currency value (International Investing in the Money & Markets section, p. 21), which gets the concept of a "strong dollar" during an international equity trade backwards, but then follows with an example diagram that gets it right. I was frankly surprised to see such a glaring mistake. I e-mailed the publishers, but received no response.
Another thing that I didn't like is the fact that, for some numbers in some of the diagrams, there is no mention at how the numbers were calculated/derived. I personally like to see/try all the formulas, so that was slightly annoying. But for the most part, I was able to figure out the formulas myself.
In conclusion, the book does an excellent job introducing various investment opportunities. It covers general information on each investment vehicle and describes the risks associated. It does not, however, teach you any special strategies (other than the obvious "diversify your portfolio" and "use strategies to minimize risk" ones) on investing - this is not the purpose of the book.
While I was initially put off by the brochure-like format and the clip-art-like pictures, I was pleasantly surprised by the content and the ease with which the information was presented. I certainly recommend this as an entry book for someone who does not understand the different ways to invest in various markets.
Pros:
+ nice introduction to markets and exchanges, and how they are regulated
+ covers all of the important investment vehicles used today
+ lots of useful information - good reference
+ lots of diagrams and pictures to break up the text
Cons:
- a few mistakes
- relatively dense - don't expect to blow through it if you want to retain the information

I have been reading a bit about investing for a decade but still felt I lacked a clear and comprehensive understanding of the previously overwhelming world of money and investing. NO MORE! I have found nothing that compares to the clear, concise and highly readable format of this book. The color coded and cearly defined sections helped me digest the well-organized and very readable material. However, the author's far exceed the abilty of most to clearly and concisely explain the most difficult and complicated of topics. This little book is a gem.
I feel like I've had a brief course in economics and investing and am now able to knowledgably and confidently discuss investing with the most savvy of finanical experts, agents, and those know it alls one often encounters. I will most certainly be looking at other Lighbulb Press materials.

This is a good read for those of us looking to improve our financial health and know only a little about investing. No magic solutions here: save money and invest wisely. But what does investing wisely mean exactly? Read this book for more. The author reviews concepts we know about the benefits of compound interest and the wisdom of index funds, and he does this by using his own stories to make this dry subject a bit more fun. The version I read didn't have a section on ETFs so you'll have to look elsewhere for that information.

It is funny how several reviewers criticize the author's recommendation to "not lose money", while that is the number one rule from the richest person on the planet, Warren Buffett.
They miss the fact that there is more to that statement that its simple basic message.
I too have read a number of investment books and I found this one to shine above the rest for a simple reason: It covers a wide range of basic investment options, without equivocating, and goes into just enough detail to explain the investment without bogging down the reader with unnecessary details. If the reader wants more info, they can certainly continue researching.
I really like the fact that the author gives definite thumbs-up or thumbs-down to certain investment vehicles (and gives good reasons why), where other advisors hem and haw about even the most ridiculous ideas such as annuities.
Some reviewers claim this book is for beginners while others say that it's NOT for amateurs. I think it requires some basic knowledge but overall is a great reference and guide to get the average investor on track to a good solid foundation in investing and well on their way to a respectable portfolio. Any expectations beyond that are totally misguided.

I'll admit it. I'm pretty much a cynic. I've read a few finance books, and they often make me feel more daunted. Everyone comes across as all-knowing, that their advice is the best. The thing that makes this book different than many of the others, is because (as I believe he says in the intro) other books tell you how to play the game, but not whether or not you should be playing it at all. In this book, Tobias gives you perspective as to what kinds of investments you should be making, if at all. I really appreciate that aspect of the book. He really takes a birds-eye view of investing and personal finance. It was so good I thought I would buy a few copies and give them to my family and friends. This is the first review I've ever written on Amazon, and wouldn't spend my time otherwise, but it's a first-rate book. I wish he wrote some more books that followed up on this to go into more detail on related topics. I felt like I could trust his advice, which perhaps sounds dangerous, but at least that's how I felt. Great book, hope you learn something form it if you purchase it.

Wow, the author needed 832 pages to say the same thing over and over again. Although I didn't find it as boring as the other reviewers, I still did not like it. I didn't really learn anything past the first couple of chapters.
There are much better books out there on this subject, so if you don't really need it for a class, go and buy something else. Especially if you're comfortable with auditing.

There are so many more physically painful things I'd rather do than read this book. AIS is naturally boring...that's a given, but it takes it to a whole new level of boring. It could give you the no-nonsense technical and professional information, but it goes on and on where no comment is necessary. Sometimes saying things that a first grader would know. Don't buy this book if you can avoid it, and if you're a professor...please don't subject your students to this.

His forms are great for providing you with an idea for approaching home owners. However, the tone of the letters are some what dismissive--but that's just my opinion.
The only area that needs enhancing is providing one with an idea as to estimate value in the property. He does not provide as much detail as others (i.e., Steve Berges "The Complete Guide to Real Estate Finance for Investment Properties"). With that said, it is an excellent resource and I highly recommend it.
