This is a great text, has a lot of ratios and explainations of why one would use them.

Excellent Self Study

Review Date: 2005-08-13
The text is very easy to read and simple to follow along. The self study guide that comes with it is very handy to get a full understanding of the mathematical equations. I was disappointed that the weblink provided in the book to get more up to date information from Standard & Poor's was not working. I had to order the 11th edition for my second finance class but that was by order of the university. When the 11th edition arrived the weblink in that book worked. I really enjoy reading the book on my commute to and from work. I recommend this book to even the curious person who wants a better understanding of retirement and pension plans.
I will always refer back to the two texts for all my finance needs.

A comprehensive, well-written finance textbook

This text is characterized by its extreme simplicty in explanation and presentation of its material. The flow of presenting the contents of each chapter is so sequentially logical that it makes the reader grasp the financial concepts very fast and effectively. Colorful illustrative diagrams are employed extensively to facilitate a high level of understanding and help the learner develop the necessary conceptual links between inter-related topics and items. In addition, it is very comprehensive and intensely supported with a "luggage" of real-life cases .I recommend this excellent text to everyone who needs to take an introductory course in corporate finance.

Very Good, But Not Excellent

Review Date: 2002-07-11
As an undergrad taking his first finance class, I have have found this book to be quite useful. The concepts are explained in simplified, less-complicated ways and make reading each chapter less frustrating than perhaps some others (compared to some of the econ texts that I have had to use!).

It is well-written, concise, and employs some very straightforward, easy-to-follow graphs/diagrams. Also, both the formulas and the exercises at the end of each chapter are quite useful.

The only reason that I did not give it a 5-star rating is because some of the chapters did not use enough "real-world examples" or hypothetical situations in some of the more challenging lessons. This might better aid those students who are new to finance or simply need another angle to better grasp the idea.

"S O" refers to Sherry and Olivia-Olivia Mellan and Sherry Christie-the new doyennes of savvy saving and fiscal fortification. Based on our society's continued gender-bias earning ability (or lack thereof), women need all the positive coaching we can get. "Money Shy to Money Sure" (MSTMS) provides innovative direction, interjecting quotations from dynamic women who are also solid financially; many quoted here with refreshingly direct remarks.

One of my favorite myths: "It's selfish to put myself first. I'm suppose to take care of everybody else." When I recently read U.S. women lose a quarter of a million dollars in potential income in their working lives, I balked. $250,000 is a lot of money to loose due to disparate wage earning. I immediately got a copy of MSTMS to learn how to finesse my current retirement plans.

Myth #2: "I don't have enough money to do anything with." Oh, really?! Then you need to read "How to find money you didn't think you had." I know, I know...you already know these inclusions blindfolded. Herein lies the point-"finding money" does not have to look like attempting to break open the piƱata at your niece's backyard birthday party!

To honor the preceding decades of prosperity: "If I take charge of my money, I'll antagonize others and might end up alone." National statistics still show women outliving men (by 7-10 years) ergo our need to save 12% (female) versus 8% (male). Financial planners' still indicate only approximately 7% of the general American public is financially prepared for retirement. "...Antagonize others..."? "...Might end up alone..."? Hel-lo!

"Money Shy to Money Sure" is a delightful road map to financial well-being. Get going. Get the book. Happy trails. DBW

It's pretty hard to take care of yourself as a woman in the world today, especially if you don't even know what taking care of yourself means. Christie and Mellan start out by teaching us what being independant really means, and give us a smooth and warmly-written guide to getting things done. I'm getting a copy for all of my friends, even those who have already taken their first steps towards financial freedom.

More than a How-to-budget book

The real issue about money management is the deep thoughts and motivations of a person. MacArthur explains the key Scriptures on the issue of money and stewardship so the power of the Word can change a person's attitude toward materialism and money in general. I highly reccomend this book, only if you want to take what it says to heart.

Biblical and Balanced

Review Date: 2006-09-19
MacArthur's treatment on Christian stewardship is a biblical and balanced study of what the Scriptures teach about money. MacArthur avoids the pitfalls of the prosperity gospel, while affirming the goodness of God in providing for his children's needs. He avoids the pitfall of legalistic teaching about tithing, while encouraging the New Testament principles of generous, proportionate, cheerful giving. His exposition of 2 Corinthians 8-9, which covers three or four chapters, is superb. His basic understanding of stewardship is soundly rooted in Scripture. His explanation of the true meaning of tithing in the Old Testament is persuasive. His application of Scripture to contemporary financial issues such as debt and gambling is needed and helpful. I found this a very wise book (typically John MacArthur), full of Scripture and true to life. I would highly recommend it!

Heartsearching and encouraging view on money

This is a true MacArthur again. Thorough, deep in thought and well based on biblical truth, this book is still easy to read. It will be much more difficult to live out the truths contained therein. Lots of pious prejudieces about money are challenged, as well as misconceptions about money. There is sound biblical advice about what to do or not with your money, but it is especially an encouragement to giving. All the spiritual aspects of giving are explained, all the blessings that go with it. I think this book will challenge you for a long time.

Balanced view of giving
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.

I would highly recommend this book for the following reasons:

1. It is a well researched biblical presentation on how we should view money. It presents the reasons that we should seek to honor God completely with our saving, spending and giving decisions.

2. It promotes the eternal view of money. Money is such a stumbling block in the lives of Christians. Many unethical ministers twist the prosperity gospel. As Charles Spurgeon said there is a prosperity plan laid out in the Old Testament. If you are faithful to God, He will prosper you materially. In the New Testament, if you are faithful to God, He will prosper you...spiritually, and even more after our bodies are resurrected. Many Christians believe giving is linked to strictly material blessings in this life.

3. MacArthur teaches that we should give our resources sacrificially and to the needy. He shares examples from the New Testament church that support this.

4. He tackles the taboo subject of tithing. He makes the strong case that tithing is a tax that applied to Israel in the Old Testament, and no longer applies to Christians today. He certainly doesn't condone the attitude of giving less than 10% of your income as a result of this, but MacArthur believes tithing is a doctrine that should not be taught. I concur.

Overall, a great book. Anyone interested in becoming a better money manager for God should read this.

The PURPOSE of the book is what earns this low rating from me. My reading finds the book clearly organized, narratively pedantic and pleasant enough. What my reading DID NOT find was thorough direction on structuring an estate to perpetuate a trustor's values.

It appears to me that the purpose of the book is to instruct planning professionals in counseling techniques useful for clients who DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY HOLD HIGHEST. Perhaps many of the boomers slated for transition in the next 50 years don't know, thus creating demand for the counseling on counseling found in this book. Best of luck, y'all...see what ya can focus and not squander in dissolute vague best wishes....

Many estate planners fail to adequately understand a client's personal values and priorities and merely plug into a standardized will and trust setup. This book provides a systematic method for analyzing and implementing needs for personal financial security, gifts to family, and charitable giving. The audience for the book is clearly professional financial planners, but wealthy individuals will find the author's approach helpful.

As a mom to 2 teenage boys (and a husband who counts in the teenager category most of the time)my grocery bill is astronomical! Ellie's book is jam packed with practical, easy to implement ideas that saved me money the first week after reading it. Last night I shopped the Walgreen circular (something I would have never done before taking Ellie's advice) for toilet paper, paper towels, laundry soap, softner, toothpaste, peanuts, and my favorite lipstick that was buy one/get one free - yahoo! I saved $37 on $80's worth of items. I wish I had read her book 10 years ago. My grocery bill is down and my ability to share with others is up. It doesn't get much better than that. Thanks, Ellie for sharing with us!

I will be odd-man-out and admit that I am extremely disappointed with this book. I was hoping to find interesting and unique ways to save money while still practicing generosity. The information in this book, however, is nothing I can't find for free on the internet.

To make matters worse, Ms. Kay's style of writing is obnoxious and self-serving. She claims the name of Christ but, from reading her vignettes that start each chapter, she seems to be more worldly than anything. She often speaks ill of her husband and in some stories seems hell-bent on her refusal to be submissive and supportive of him. She shows no meekness of spirit or heart.

I would recommend a book like Charity and Its Fruit by Jonathan Edwards. At least until something better comes along.

I've read this book, and if you are someone who uses coupons, it will be a great book. I, however, live in an area with no stores that double coupons nor do I have access to newsstands selling various city newspapers to buy several Sunday papers for coupons. There's nothing wrong with having a local coupon swap box, but I nor my friends are interested in clipping EVERY coupon and swapping.
So. If you want a book that saves grocery money with coupons, go for it.
If not, I recommend Miserly Mom by Joni McCoy. She dismisses coupons in general as they are usually coupons for stuff you wouldn't buy anyway.
ps ellie kay is a rather amusing read, I'll admit

I loved the Tightwad books, and this updated edition of Shop, Save, and Share by Ellie Kay is equally good, but written in an even more fun-to-read and witty style. I've found the book to offer great savings tips that are realistic and practical without a great deal of extra effort, because if it's going to take a lot of time to do--(at least for me)--it's not going to get done!

I recently enjoyed hearing Ellie (in a very warm and charming manner) give good advice on the Money Matters radio program, so I also got and would recommend her latest book, A Women's Guide to Family Finances.

Here's the only money saving tip you need - stop buying books that tell you how to save money! There is nothing here that isn't already out there in various places for free on the internet or your local public library (the public library is the greatest money saving resource you have - use it!). And if you really want to make money, start writing your own book of the incredibly obvious tips and get someone to publish it.

Review Date: 2000-04-09
In his introduction to The Magical State, Coronil writes: "As an oil nation, Venezuela was seen as having two bodies, a politcal body made up of its citizens and a natural body made up of its rich subsoil." Coronil's subject is how the state interacted with these two bodies. Abundant oil money, he argues, raised the ambitions of the state and the expectations of the people to an unrealistic extreme. Although excessive cashflow could not be spent efficiently in an underdeveloped country like Venezuela, pretending to do so was the government's sole claim to legitimacy; thus a charade of progress and benevolence pervaded the political culture of an export-driven, dependent economy.

Coronil's ideas are fascinating, and Part I alone (of four) makes this book worth reading. Unfortunately, Coronil does not bring his ideas home persuasively. Instead his book slowly degenerates into deconstructed historical anecdotes and glimpses of bitter subjectivity: reminders of his own experience with the government of Venezuela. Coronil's book casts an intriguing theoretical perspective on more conventional, more competent histories of Venezuela by scholars like Judith Ewell or John Lombardi. Read them first. The Magical State is for those who are comfortable with the historical framework and are ready to read critically--caveat lector.

I bought this book in order to get some context for the situation today with Chavez. However, the auother seems to get lost in his own head and and for large parts of the book fails to describe anything other than a load of overly sohpisticated academic speak that nobody understands. While there are a few excellent chapters in it I felt a bit let down.

A must read, therefore, not only for all Latin Americanists but also many others.

an interesting insight into why oil rent cannot buy industrial development. In addition to historical overview, Coronil describes the simultaneously enabling and corrosive effect of oil rent via several focused examples such as the failure to establish a Venezuelan tractor industry. These examples are especially convincing because of the interview material used to round out the characters of the main actors.
On the other hand, the effort to connect the development difficulties of Venezeula with the general theory of rent capture is uninspired.

Well written style, similiar to a Wade Cook book. Also similiar to a Wade Cook book Mr. Witt presents various rolling stock/option hype strategies, but never actually tells you how on earth to find these magical equities. I have searched far and wide and used a wide array of screening and technical charting tools and Only 1 in every 500 or so stocks I look at could be called a rolling stock. Another thing to note, many rolling stocks you will find are linked to hard commodities such as gold, silver and copper. If it's a sideways economy with some volatility just play an index option on Gold. At the end of the day, it's a good theory, but without a way to test the theory aside from a few paisley charts in his book, this is essentially worth less than the cost of shipping.

I suppose that the Wade Cook team could have had practical Telechart screening strategies set up to find these, but you would have had to pay $xx,000 to get into one of their seminars, which is where all these guys made their real paychecks.

I wasn't very impressed with this book. I've read many of the major books in the market and have been trading for quite some time and I found that I didn't get anything substantial out of this one. maybe a good book if your just starting out but not for anyone that has traded over 6 months. Pretty much all he talks about is buying stocks under ten dollars and setting limit orders. And the amount of time he devotes to Wade Cook is irritating. Ok yea its obvious who your mentor is but you don't have to quote him on every bloody page and then put the titles of every one of his books in the appendix including the books that he wrote that has nothing to do with stocks. Wow maybe I'm really not impressed with this book.

Well I bought this book back in the day as well and what can I say. It started me off to the best investing strategy that I work with to this day. When I first joined the military I had no idea of what stocks were but I wanted to start up a roth ira and I knew from reading here and there that mutual funds underperformed to stocks. I was young and I wanted to see if I could beat the market. Well after reading this and investing just a grand in roth, two years later with no additional investing I was able to achieve $25,000. Thats right $1000 + 2 years = $25,000. Thanks Witt.

When do you buy? When do you sell?
Mainly focus under $5 stocks.
90% of the stock player's loose money since they have no idea which way a stock will roll next.
They are too emotional to get in a trade at a top and are afraid to enter at the bottom.
This book will explain what to look for and when is the right time to enter a trade and exit a trade.

It has been over 5 years since I found and read this book. After reading it, I opened an on-line trading account, started following the guidelines in the book (the first part, not Options), and made money. I went on to read other books and trade using other methods. I believe it is working for me because I learned this method first. Now I have run into this listing on Amazon and would like to say it was a great book that opened up a whole world for me, by giving me a safe entry into trading and a method to fall back on in difficult markets. Read this book, read between the lines as well, and add this method to your investment repertoire! I thought since the book is older now, you'd like to read my review, 'cause I am still using what I learned from this book today.

The book is directed towards teens and above which I was not aware while buying it. Regardless of how it is written it includes very basic information that any parent should know and use with their children, including those that can't read yet. I'm staring a Roth IRA for my 4 year old daughter using the tips from the book. The most useful part of this book from the parent perspective is a list of resources to go to for additional information, like the IRS publications, other books or websites to review. Overall very handy resource, but should be priced below $10.

This book is wonderful! It is a great read, and an easy read for any parent teaching their kids about working and what to do with their money. Their is a lot more to it then just saving your money in the bank, and this book does a great job of breaking down the steps of what to do with your money. It even makes suggestions of jobs that children can do, whether it be working for their parents or getting a job outside of the home. My daughter is only 6, but I started teaching her about money and working for her money about a year ago. Of course I did not go into any complicated details, but I felt the younger the better to learn about money and what to do with it. I learned things from this book that I did not know before, so it was not only helpful for me to explain things to my daughter, but it was helpful for me as well, considering I learned some valuable information that I did not know before. I will keep referring back to book as my daughter gets older, and when she is old enough to understand the book on her own, she will read it as well.

Thank you Tracy, for sharing your knowledge, and making learning about investing your kids money not so scary or complicated.

If only all teens had this book!

I try very hard to teach my 17 year old strong money lessons.. he needs a job if he wants to have a car, he has to pay the insuarnce on that car.. the gas, it's mandatory that he save 1/2 of every paycheck he gets for "emercencys" etc. But i have to admit, i never thought of him starting a Roth IRA.

We used this book for a little bit of a different reason. This was the first year my son recieved a "w-2" from his very own job. He was so excited to learn he would be getting money back! So it came in the mail and of course "mommy was gonna take care of it". So there it sat.. in my in box for weeks along with all the other to-do's ~ and then I ran across The Kid's ROTH IRA handbook by Tracy Foote. I skimmed through and something caught my eye... on page 93 a chapter started called "Tax Talk - All about tax forms". It was a step by step explanation of how to fill out a 1040 as well as information behind the questions on the form. It has illistrations of what the form and documents look like and shaded areas with extra information to help them along. There is also a Glossary in the back for words they may not have learned yet. It is really geared towards a wide range of tweens/teens, or a fun read for the parent of a smaller child

So, I grabbed the book, his W2, printed off a 1040 from the internet.. and told him good luck.

Within 30 minutes he had his return ready to go LONG FORM, but even better than that it sparked conversations that will help him immensely in his financial future. Before you know it he has refund deposited into his bank account and he is offically a tax paying citizen!

This book is well worth the money and I implore you to enrich your childs financial future with this excellent read.

A Must Read for ALL PARENTS!!

Teaching children about saving money is critical for their success as adults. This book provides a step-by-step guide on how to teach your children about investing and specifically Roth IRAs. As an adult who had little knowledge on this subject, I found the book easy to understand without it being condescending. My children have both read this book (16 and 10) and were able to understand it completely. Even though they were resistant at first, both of my girls are now eagerly working on saving enough money to start their own Roth IRAs. This is a well thought out book and should be required reading for all parents and children.

After reading "The Kid's ROTH IRA Handbook", I came away with a good feeling that kid's and parents can have hope for the future. Once we get the current generation of kids to understand saving instead of consumption, the problem is solved. This book explains a difficult concept in easy terms "Great job,Tracy"
