I purchased this book hoping to expand my online teaching. Most of the information is geared for individuals who have never taught online before or who have limited information about online teaching. The information is accurate and supportive for newcomers to the field, and I picked up a few new tips that may help me build my business. The authors are knowledgeable and forthcoming with informaiton from their own experiences. If you're thinking about moving into online teaching, read this book first!!

Book was disappointing because it does not include anything more than common sense advice in applying for edcuational jobs. The authors certainly created a very clever way to make $200,000 a year in the field of education, sell a book.

A list of registrar's -- oh please - easy to find out WITHOUT this book or the seminar as is a pay scale. The only people who are getting anything from this book and the seminars are the authors.

This falls under the same category as make millions in real estate, make millions buying and selling on e-bay.

I'm a professional paranoid, so I was pretty suspicious that the book would be some get rich quick scheme. It isn't. This is a very sound book that make a pretty convencing demonstration that one can take solid academic credentials and some teaching experience and work at home. The authors are well experienced in the field and made comments regarding online tools that I also share about the same tools. They do indeed know what they are talking about.

If you have a masters or (better) terminal degree in your field, love teaching and mentoring, and want to work at home full time, this is an excellent book.

James Cramer wrote a great autobiography. I love the show and wanted to learn more about the host. After hearing about this book, I bought it and read it without stopping. Cramer begins with his childhood and describes all the seasons of his life. His time in college, LA and at Goldman Sachs. I enjoyed reading about someone who never quits. There were many times in his life when he could have given up, but he never did. He also shows the importance of having someone in your life who always believes in you no matter what. To me, this novel shows the hard work and grit that are required to become great: whether you are lucky or not.

I bought this book because I saw a recommendation somewhere together with One Up on Wall Street. I had my doubts when I saw the cover (close up of the author's face) and unfortunately when I began reading my fears became true. It is one big ad of Jim Cramer. I strongly recommend against buying it however One Up on Wall Street is highly recommended.

This book is one of the best thing out there right now if you are not sure how to improve on your spending. And yes, because you will save money, you will be making better choices. The book is an easy-read, but intelligently written. It is a quick-read book, but very informative. It will not waste your time. I really liked the book. I found the book very valuable to me in every practical way. The author is extremely well-written and you will understand what he is talking about even if you may never have done the things he talks about. You will not alienated. You should take his advice to heart and start implementing his suggestions right away. Also, you don't have read everything. You can skip around and read what interests you. This book will definitely make you smarter. It is amazing. Very well-written. Everyone should have a copy.

We heard about this great book from friends, bought it, and then bought five additional copies for our children. Common sennse ideas, but what we don't think about in our everyday lives, that can save big dollars over the course of short time.
I'd recommend this as a fine gift for your friends and family.
Also to be said, it's easy, quick and down to earth.

Read this book on vacation. Great read. I never buy a personal savings/finance book- I find that ironic and prefer the library for a book on how to save money, but I bought this one and it was well worth it. Common sense tone and pacing of book make this immediately applicable where you don't have to write things down to save money and later forget. you start saving right away. Surprised . Real find this book was.

I'm age 70. Living Rich and Spending Smart has opened my eyes as to how much money I have thrown away. I hate this book. It makes me ashamed of myself. On the other hand, this knowledge will make living entirely on Social Security a lot easier.

After reading "The Millionaire Next Door" (one of my all-time favorites!), "Living Rich by Spending Smart" was an outstanding read. I really enjoyed the financial wisdom shared within this book. It really is amazing to think how simple it is to save significant money and yet how careless we can be throughout our days and months. This book contains some excellent tips on how to be smarter with your daily expenses, while still continuing to live an enjoyable lifestyle.

the awful truth
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-22
The awful truth is that we have been fooling ourselves and we have let ourselves be fooled, both voters and politicians themselves. Fooled ourselves into thinking that the finances of the United States are just fine.

This book tells us what a financial disaster awaits us the next few decades. The worst thing is, apparently it is not even a major theme in the current presidential election, because we have picked presidential candidates that are not strong in economics. Another four years from now, we will pick someone who is strong on economics, and then start doing something about it.

The book is mainly making us aware of roughly what are the issues. That is accomplished in the very beginning, and after that the authors keep repeating the same points in different words, which I thought was somewhat boring. Yet, it is nicely written, it's got nice anecdotes here and there, and in the end there is more information on what our options are. It would have been nice if they went a little bit deeper into the matter, to explain even more about how things work, etc. But the authors kept it simple and easy to understand, and maybe, as voters, we only need to know a simple thing that the government needs to do, and we already knew this for ourselves: When in debt, you need to get more money and spend less!

The most difficult thing will be to actually vote for a candidate who dares to talk about tough financial issues, as opposed to most candidates who seem to be all charisma and vague promises, and when elected, let the next president clean up the mess.

MUST READING FOR 2008! A very good introduction and overview

This book makes these very complex topics easy reading. As other reviewers here mention, the book spends a disproportionate amount of time on SS and Medicare, and almost no time on Defense. (My guess is because this a bi-partisan effort, and people on opposite sides of the fence tend to disagree strongly in the area of defense.) Regardless, this is a wonderful book and helped me to better understand how a lot of this stuff works. I especially enjoyed the chapter on "pork" spending -- and how it amounts to perhaps 4% of the federal budget. READ THIS BOOK before the presidential debates begin! Educate yourself so you can decide which candidates actually know what they're talking about, and which ones are blowing smoke. Our country is facing serious fiscal problems and they are not going to just magically go away.

A sobering account of America's finances

Even as a CPA, I had never really thought about what the country's national debt (over $9 trillion and climbing) meant to me and future generations.

You don't have to be a CPA to get something out of this book; it is written in a manner that provides nice summaries of complicated issues. Even better, it provides references so you can learn more. The book is balanced and does not appear to have a political slant.

As increasing Federal deficits affect every American, I can't recommend this book enough, especially in an election year.

Where Does the Money Go? Your Guided Tour to the Federal Budget Crisis by Scott Brittle and Jean Johnson reminds readers how much of our tax dollars are returned to us in the form of Social Security and Medicare. And, every year there is more health care to buy. Brittle and Johnson also offer suggestions and recommendations for the future but the main objective is to convince citizens that the crisis has been slow in coming and will take a lot of unavoidable sacrafices. The primary focus is on America's health care expenditures while the money spent on military defense is not an option that is as thoroughly examined.

If I had spent three minutes doing a little R and D I would have never bought this book but I was lazy and I got what I deserved.

If you want a book with a lot of right wing Republican drivel and Mormon survival philosophy pushed at you and exposure to an author who spends most of the book's time letting you know how prescient he is then go ahead and buy it. But if you are serious about getting personal financial information then look further and pass on this one.

I agree he might need the six months of food supply hidden away as if everyone populates the earth with scores of kids and grandkids as he has then the food supply will surely become strained.

Howard Ruff originally published this book in 1979. Anyone who followed his advice lost money for years and years. Sort of reminds me of Ravi Batra and his 1987 best-seller, "The Great Depression of 1990." What Great Depression of 1990, you ask? My point, precisely. Now that things are looking badly economically, Ruff can call himself a prophet, and republish his book with "21st century updates" responding to the credit crisis. Yeah, okay Howard.

either you get it or you don't. this book was first published in 1979. therefore, it is way ahead of any other financial book that was written during this same time period. the title would sound a little frisky, if it were written just today. however, it wasn't. there are many things that he talks about that people are only now starting to realize and discuss. things like gold, silver and food for survival. he talks about the impending banking crisis that would be about to unfold. these are all things that are coming into fruition now, and yet people still do not get it. the premanatory nature of this book shows just how brainwashed we still are with gas about to hit five and gold set to hit $1000 one more time and beyond. if people do not get it now. they will after this christmas. it will be one of the worst christmases ever.

What a fun book to read! Mr. Ruff seems to be a very good and honest man and I enjoyed his book very much. If you believe the country and the world has no problems then this is not the book for you. If you believe we will have economic problems in the future and like me you don't have faith in our growing supply of paper money, then you will enjoy this book. I am a silver nut. I believe gold and silver are money, not paper. More important, I learned a few things from reading this book. I always admire men who can teach me something. I seek them out. I love this book because Glinda's writing style and information make me feel so comfortable. I feel as if I'm sitting at the kitchen table sharing with a knowledgeable sisterfriend, who understands what I'm going through from her actual experience. It's also good to know I'm not really going through this alone. The exercises help prepare me for the recommendations that follow. So I'm on the "same page" with Glinda as I move forward to getting a clean bill of financial health. This is also a good book for young women to use to build a healthy lifestyle around finances before they run into problems as well. I am so impressed, I've already purchased the other 2 books Glinda has written!

Great Introduction to Behavioral Finance

For more than 20 years I have been fascinated why so many people make financial decisions which defy rationality. Unfortunately, I find it extremely difficult to read and comprehend most of the research papers that has been done in the field of behavioral finance. The last 5 years have seen several good books explaining the results of the emerging field of behavioral finance. This book is one of those good books.

As a fan of index funds, I enjoyed reading this book's explanation and recommendation for suggesting index funds.

This book is very readable and is an excellent primer on the major concepts which are emerging from behavioral finance research.

Socrates was right when he uttered his famous quote "Know Thy Self". One of the hardest things to do is to understand why we do what we do sometimes. This book helps explain some of this natural human behavior, and how we can manage it to make more rational financial decisions.

I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including:

Index Mutual Funds: How to Simplify Your Financial Life and Beat the Pro's
How to Use Psychology to Achieve Your Financial Goals
Are You Using the Right Rules to Plan Your Retirement?
The Richest Man in Babylon
Bogle on Mutual Funds: New Perspectives for the Intelligent Investor
The Millionaire Next Door
The Four Pillars of Investing: Lessons for Building a Winning Portfolio
A Random Walk Down Wall Street: The Time-Tested Strategy for Successful Investing, Ninth Edition

Begin To Make Smart Money Decisions

Review Date: 2007-10-30
This book is well worth reading. Even though I am sixty-nine years old with an extensive background in finance, I still found the contents of this book very interesting. Much of what is written I already know and have practiced for many years, which has lead me to accumulate a fair amount of wealth to live a comfortable life in retirement.

What I have learned from Messrs. Belsky and Gilovich is an ability to teach my grandchildren (and children, if they will listen) some financial fundamentals which will also allow them to accumulate wealth. My oldest granddaughter who is 23 is well on her way, not only saving in a Roth IRA and 401(k) plan, but also understanding some basic principals, such as saving small amounts and the power of compounding.

I recommend this book to everyone who wants to begin to make smart money decisions and get financially ahead. As Ben Stein says, wealth accumulation is freedom. Freedom from worry and freedom to buy the things you need to enjoy living a comfortable life. If you accept the economic principals presented in this book you will achieve financial freedom.

I've read several books on this subject and this one was by far the best. Many of the other books in the field have some rather dubious tactics listed, but this book focuses on reasonable steps people can take to protect their asstes that are legal and likely to stand up in court. I found this book to be a well organized, well written professional text in a field filled with a lot of books hawking expensive and legally questionable scams and schemes.

This book does an excellent job of introducing the concept of asset protection and includes strategies to protect assets. A number of protection strategies are analyzed to show the pros and cons of each strategy. Examples and diagrams are shown to help communicate protection concepts. Past court cases for some of the protection asset strategies are discussed to show the pros and cons of the particular strategy. I would highly recommend this book to learn about how trusts, corporate entities, and other strategies can work to help the reader make a decision to protect their assets.

Being in the financial services I am always looking for new and exciting books in my field...sadly, this is not one of them. The book was dry and made for a long read.

The upside is that the authors seem to know what they are talking about and are able to explain the ideas behind a variety of different asset protection strategies.

The authors also explain the benefits and drawbacks of each asset protection strategy, though they do not go into very much detail on some of their ideas.

One of the reasons is probably because at the end of the book, they provide their website as a reference. I don't have a problem with that, but it would have been nice if they had been able to make the information more interesting so that you didn't feel like you had to go to their website to "get the good stuff".

I got this book from my library looking for some tips. There really aren't any that you couldn't think of by yourself. Plus, in his eagerness to make the point that cheap is good in and of itself, he runs roughshod over a lot of other considerations.

I couldn't finish the book because I didn't want to waste any more time.

Content lacking--constant swearing/ "f- bombs" throughout..

Not really sure what the stir was about this guy...he's crude and vulgar. Read Dave Ramseys' work instead if you don't like constant swearing....And reviewers said he was funny--like a weird drunk uncle I guess...Would have given a "no star" if possible...

Loved the book! Would see the movie (with a two for one coupon & a friend).

Funny and startling realistic and helpful. Change your worldview about money and thrift. Get the most fun for the least money. Cheap doesn't have to be self-centered and joyless, but is one of the best ways to serve others (if one gives what one doesn't spend). I read this book in less than twenty-four hours (which says a lot for a mom of four kids-two school-aged & two preschoolers). LOL'd so much my husband needed explanations to find out what was hitting my funnybone.

A book to read, reread, and to give to everyone

Have just finished this book. Next step is to buy as many copies as can reasonably afford, to give one to every coworker, to every person for whom no xmas present is already set aside, and to every other person who has any chance of learning the excellent life lessons. As a person of Scottish descent, and as a former Quaker (two groups known for their economy, err, cheapness) this book "speaks to my condition" as the Quakers say. Read this book, then adopt as close to all of its practices as humanly possible, so that more of us will be, as are the Yeagers, among the truely rich.

Self-professed skinflint Jeff Yeager offers tons of tips to lower your spending, add more time and enjoy life more. Not only does he offer a buffet of frugal tips, he espouses a philosophy of life that puts time above money, experiences ahead of things. He is not preachy or severe. He is not talking about sackcloth and ashes. He is talking about not buying into the consumer-oriented society that urges us to spend, spend, spend.

Forget the stimulus package. On a micro level, Yeager's tips might save you money. On a macroeconomic level, if everyone took his advice, it might send the economy into an even further death spiral. Given Americans' penchant for spending,, though, I do not see that happening.

Not only is Yeager frugal, but as a writer he us funny as hell, sort of a cross between a miser and Larry the Cable Guy. ("Git `er done ... fer less!") The guy ought to be a comedy writer or stand-up comic. Even if you are not the least bit interested in taking any of his advice, the humor in this book is worth the price of admission alone!
