Secrets of the Entrepreneurial Personality
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-28
Are you an employee hoping to become an entrepreneur? If so, you should reflect on your own character and inclinations before quitting your job. Making the switch from employment to business leadership can involve learning new skills and adopting new attitudes. You will need to tolerate financial risk, live without a regular paycheck, and develop top-notch selling skills. And you will need to energize yourself with a sense of purpose that will inspire your employees, vendors, and customers. These are the kinds of issues raised by the authors, as they focus on the personal traits necessary for successful entrepreneurship.

This book is less about the nuts and bolts of starting a business than it is about how to prepare for entrepreneurship within your own mind. Even the relatively few practical matters that are mentioned tend to be explained in a personal way. In the process, some conventional business terminology is adapted to suit the authors' usage. For example, what the authors refer to as a marketing tactic might more universally be considered a unique selling proposition, or an element of product positioning.

Nonetheless, the authors give a great deal of good advice, from how to hire and fire, to how to discourage office backstabbing. The stories they tell are interesting and very readable, including an account of how they have encouraged their own employees to become financially independent, rather than remaining dependent on a regular paycheck. Above all, the authors' analysis of the ideal entrepreneurial frame of mind should be of great value for anyone considering abandoning steady employment to start their own business.

My cousin gave me this book on cd as a gift in preparation for my departure from the working world to full blown self employment. Despite what I thought were veiled messages from my cousin, I eagerly listened to this book. I'm not a big fan of books on cd because I have a hard time concentrating while just listening to them, but as soon as I put "Before You Quit Your Job" in I began thinking that I've read/heard this before. I've read Rich Dad, Poor Dad (and liked it) and I couldn't help but think that this book sounds an awful lot like it. I haven't really compared the "text" of the two since I've only listened to this book in the car, but I swear many, if not most, of the information and stories are repackaged from Rich Dad and possibly the other books in the series based on what others here have had to say about it. I don't feel as if I gained anything new from reading this book and I'm reluctant to read any of the others in the series after this. So, if you've never read any of the other books this might be worthwhile. If you have read the others, well, I don't know...this may be terribly redundant.

Another great book by Robert T. Kiyosaki.

I found this more helpful than some of his other more recent books. It's not just a reiteration of his old information. It goes over some key points of his first book but hits on many things and mistakes he went through in his many businesses. He then applies the things he has learned and puts them in this book in ways which anyone can understand. There are some insightful tips from Sharon Lecter in here too.

This book tells you everything you need to be successful or at least better your life. I'm a teen myself and I just read the book. Already I feel more motivated to strive for the life that I want. Before reading this, I had no ideas of what I wanted to get out of life or what I even really wanted to do with my time here on Earth. I've recommended the adult version of this book to my single mother because I beleive in the authors ability to help people better themselve and acheive their dreams. Every high-school student should read this book, or even read it at earlier ages.

Teens and adults will both benefit from this book.

Mr. Canfield and Mr. Healy have created a wonderful, much-needed tool for teens. Adults will benefit as well.

In my work with teenagers as an ADHD Coach/Consultant I recommend "The Success Principles for Teens: How to Get From Where You Are to Where You Want to Be".

It is a very positive book that gives hope to teens that may be experiencing challenges in their life.

My three favorite principles are Principle 1: Take 100% Responsibility for Your Life, Principle 13: Ask! Ask! Ask! and Principle 19: Give Your Best to Be Your Best.

Thank you!

I know the book says for TEENS, but why wait????
My granddaughter's birthday is in July. Facing 10 and the next grade and struggling somewhat through the end of the last semester, I wanted her to have a view of the 'big picture' that she would be ready to take on the challenge of the critical years to come.

This book is about empowerment. Helping a child form their own opinions and allowing them to mature without encumbering them with mixed messages during a difficult time.
I have only been working with her a month, but she now understands WHY she WANTS a clean room. She has already developed some of her OWN goals and is even forming ideas about what she would like to be when she grows up.

Since the book is written by peers, it gives kids tools and examples in their own language.
She has come to understand that class projects are not something to be done casually, but with consideration and forethought.

Even MORE important is the sense of SELF she is discovering and, as an amazing side benefit, HAPPINESS.

Maybe they should have called this Stop the Mope, Learn to Cope.... I DID read the book WITH her to help her feel more empowered and teamed up with an ally.
I also figured this would be the best way to PREPARE ME for the changes she would get from this book.

Ready for a re-birth? Make this book a family event and grow together.

This book was perfect for my daughter who is struggling to figure out what life is all about. Once she started reading this book, she couldn't stop talking to me about what the book said. The book really helped her understand things that I couldn't help her with. I am very happy that I purchased this book for my daughter. I highly recommend it for anyone who has a teenage that is struggling to figure out life.

Wow, I devoured the book "The Success Principles for teens" in 3 days and I am absolutely amazed how you are able to attack EVERY SINGLE negativity a teenager could possibly have. That fear, excuse, or problem - all answered. I have to admit, besides completely revamping my whole outlook on life, this IS the best book I've read in all of school.

I read this book as part of a college course on professional communication and I can honestly say it's helped me to deal with my coworkers much better. The authors divide the book into sections dealing with one of ten possible behaviors that represent people at their worst. Their advice is sound and is often accompanied by real life anecdotes from those who field-tested this advice. I would easily recommend it to anyone, especially those in management positions or in human resources.

Life Changing

Review Date: 2008-04-12
It was a very stressful time in my life. I was dealing with hopeless beauracracies on the phone, a new boss that seemed to have just gotten out of the military and an ex-husband that, surprise, surprise, was still doing the same, make me crazy, behaviors 10 years into the divorce as when I was married to him. I didn't like the way these people were acting, but even more I didn't like the way I was behaving around them. I was getting so frustrated on the phone, I was either to mad to be effective or I would hang up in frustration. I didn't even know how to deal with a boss who micromanaged when I wasn't even used to having a manager at all. As for the ex-husband, well, I was the one left completely frustrated by my encounters, I'm sure he never gave them another thought.

This book shows you the 10 types of people you can't stand. It shows you the 4 things that motivates each of them and it shows you how to handle them and you. It is not some easy you fix them book. It is definitely you who has to change and sometimes you will have to gag as you say certain things or choke on the words you are holding back. But, it will work and has worked for me. By showing you what motivates people, it shows you how to solve your problems with them. It shows how to deal with them in person or on the phone. It also shows you what may be the most shocking to you and that's what to do when you behave like one of the 10 people you can't stand. Thereby, helping you to understand what motivates you to act a certain way at times and then helping you see a better way to handle those situations. I found that most people are more than just 1 type of person. It's very eye-opening and it not only helped me deal with frustrating phone calls, confusing bosses, the same-o, same-o ex-husband, but was also extremely helpful in dealing with the behaviors you can't stand in your children and other relatives.

It has made all the difference in how I interact with people. I am no longer the one that is frustrated. feeling hopeless, seething with anger or, more importantly, not solving my problems. Additionally, I work in a call center and the book had the added benefit of giving me better skills at handling people that are upset when they call in and I, though very sympathetic, am not able to offer them the solution to their problems that they want. When you have those frustrated callers that you would like to help and you know that normally you may have left them feeling like you didn't care, they give you skills to make the person calling in feel like you really do care and that you are listening and doing what you can to help.

If you are willing to be the one to change, you will actually be able to handle all the people you can't stand after reading this book. Very few books are life changing, but I can't tell you how thankful I am that this is one of them.

I found this book is quite helpful in identifying differing communication styles and in giving suggestions for how to deal with them. One of the major, salutary, insights is that each of us probably has a communication styles that irritate somebody, somewhere. Ouch! But recognizing that aspect of "the problem with OTHER people" gives us a better chance to improve matters. I liked the humor, too.

This is one of the best books about effective communication I have come across.

As a manager of a large teaching staff, and working for local government, I have found this book to be one of the best resources I own.

The book clearly breaks down difficult personality characteristics, identifies the motivation behind the behaviours, and gives clear strategies to deal with the situation. From the bulldozing boss, to the meek mouse, this book helps to bring out the best from the people you work with.

It's also effective with difficult friends and family. It is also very readable.

A true classic. The grand grand father of all self help books. Stand the test of time. Very helpful indeed. Must read.

p.s. Below please find some of my favorite "and classical" passages for your reference.

Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve. pg 32

Knowledge becomes power only when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action and directed to a definite end. pg 76

Success requires no explanations. Failure permits no alibis. pg 138

Genuine wisdom is usually conspicuous through modesty and silence. pg 141

Men who accumulate great fortunes are generally known as cold blooded, and sometimes ruthless. Often they are misunderstood. What they have is will power, which they mix with persistence, and place back of their desires to insure the attainment of their objectives. pg 151

However with that said, the information is solid and helpful.

An excellent book on the power of positive reinforcement and the importance of focussing on what is being done right rather than wrong. Ken Blanchard has once again created a powerful story to help illustrate key points and make reading this book fun and memorable.

So intriguing are the principles presented in this book that I actually travelled to Sea World San Diego and spent a day working hands-on with their trainers to learn it first-hand (great program - TFD - Trainer for the Day also highly recommended).

The book is a nice quick read and you may find yourself reading it several times it is so compelling. It is good addition to one's personal library as I have referred back to it a number of times as I have had to deal with difficult co-workers, working with challenging children, etc.

Enjoy this book and apply its simple principles in your life!

I purchased this book based upon the recommendation of a colleague. Since receiving it, I have had two uses for Writing Magic - I share some of the writing ideas with the teachers I work with in an elementary school (I am the building Literacy Coach), and I also read a chapter a week to my graduate students who are obtaining certification as Literacy Specialists. I believe it helps them to understand what students go through with the writing process and therefore my students are asked to try each of the author's writing suggestions.
If you teach upper elementary school, middle school or even early high school writing, this book is full of engaging ideas for students that may be reluctant to write. Taking advice from such a successful author helps young writers take new risks. I highly recommend this easy to read book.

This book is a must have for any middle school or high school language arts class. Granted, it is specifically geared toward helping students become better writers of fiction/narrative and we are sadly forced to teach students how to write the "prepackaged" version of the five-paragraph essay, however, this book WILL impact their writing style and teach them the ART of captivating their reader. Levine is a talented writer and many students know and adore her books making it easier to "sell" this book to them. She offers wickedly witty examples and prompts students to think outside the box...who knows - maybe they will create some magic!

This is a decent book. I only looked at a couple of chapters on analytical and statistics problems. Some of the problems marked "hard" were quite interesting and challenging. Quite a few of the problems were trivial and repetitive though. The solutions are generally well written, though sometimes a bit too verbose (for my taste).

Overall, not a bad investment if you are preparing for job interviews which may expect you to crack a few puzzles.

Generous this book is...
In the Fall of 2007 I was in the process of implementing my very own non profit organization called The Pink Polka Got Org. and I really didn't have the managerial experience required to direct a board or my staff so I looked for a book that would help me. This book was very helpful and provided some good examples and details of keeping everything together. I thank the author for not making things too complicated for a young woman starting out fresh! Kudos****

This is a must read for all board members and potential board members for nonprofit organizations. It is very easy to read and understand. The outline format demonstrates the expert experience of the author.

I am chair of a nonprofit organization. I bought 2 copies one for my board members and one for the staff.

However, I am disappointed that I am not able to obtain a copy of it in a Spanish translation.

It's very easy to read, and rather comprehensive in the sense that it covers everything regarding management of the non profit. But it's not as helpful as I will like as it doesn't really go into details and the how to's and the examples and such. I would've liked more of that.

After reading all of the reviews here on Amazon I jumped at buying this book. I thought it would be the only source I needed, for now. However, as soon as I started reading it I was completely lost and I felt like my non-profit idea was a lost cause. This book appears to best represent large non-profits, or organizations that are already est.

The leading chp. discussed boards, not even helpful hints on building a board, just information on how to strengthen your board and how to give them clear duties. Huh, this was totally disconcerting for me b/c I don't even have a board! By chp 3 the author finally discussed something that I could use, except I was so befuddled at this point that I didn't want to continue. Why talk about the importance of planning or developing a plan in chp 3, shouldn't this come sooner? Why not break down what non-profits are to some ppl and how they have changed in the first few chps.? Why instead talk about boards and how to call meetings in the first chp.? None of this was particularly helpful for someone like me.

I think this is a great overview for ppl already have an organization but want to improve it. For people starting like me or starting small I recommend "How to Manage an Effective Nonprofit Organization." Now that book so far has been indispensable.

Update:
I'm sorry if there was some confusion with my review. Basically, I still believe that this book is a great resource for larger, well established organizations, but for people like me, starting a much smaller non-profit from the ground up it was only a slight overview that wasn't entirely helpful. I instead would recommend "Managing a Nonprofit Organization in the 21st Century" by Thomas Wolf, ISBN 978-0-684-84990-4. I apologize for the confusion I caused by listing the wrong title in my previous review. I felt as if Thomas Wolf's book was more comprehensible for starting and maintaining a non-profit.

The board members of my federation all have board of directors. I purchased this small book to help them as board members of the federation and to work with their own non profit boards.
This is the best and most usable book I have found and recommend it often to others in the nonprofit world.

Good introduction to the value of money; or what government does to decrease the value of money. Written to be accessible to youth and does a good job of putting economic ideas into readable prose.

Good book on basic economics - worth buy

Using LinkedIn I've recently connected with a friend from twenty years ago. We've exchanged some emails and will try to get together when he is back in town. When my friend learned that I had three daughters he recommended several books by Richard J. Maybury. I requested a couple from my library. The first one I got was What Happened To Penny Candy?

What Happened To Penny Candy? is a short book of 80 pages. It is a quick read. The book is structured as a set of letters from "Uncle Eric" to his nephew "Chris." In these letters the book explains the basics of economics. It does a good job. Over the last thirty years I've read dozens, maybe even hundreds, of books on economics. This book does a good job of covering the basics. I even learned a few things. For example I didn't realize that the reason quarters and dimes were lined with the little ridges on the side was to show if little pieces were clipped off the coin.

Richard Maybury, the author, writes from a strong Libertarian viewpoint. He explains why government manipulation causes problems. Someone who feels government is the solution to economic problems will not enjoy this book.

I'll return the book to the library and buy my own copy. I plan to have each of my daughters read this book. It is short enough that they won't fuss too much about having to ready a dry topic. Economics is an important subject, one that I want my daughters to master.

This treasure of a book rises to the top amongst the scant Economics courses available for home education. Along with the Bluestocking Guide available to accompany it, Penny Candy provides all that is needed in a high school economics course and spares the reader the unnecessary fillers. Written in the creative format of correspondence letters, all the meaty issues are presented in a highly understandable writing style.

The Bluestocking Guide gives additional writings to amplify the chapters. Questions, essay assignments, and a list of supplemental movies and books make this a thorough and well-rounded course.

Great Book on Money and Inflation

The great thing about this book is that it's a great explanation of inflation. The bad thing about this book is it's a great explanation of inflation. Yes, I said the same thing twice.

When it was first written-1978-inflation was the major thing in American economics. Today it is still a major threat-but the social urgency over it has declined as the rate of inflation has waned over the years. Yet, I still give this book a 5 star rating because understanding inflation requires explaining money. This book explains money better than any other book I've read.

Understanding money is VERY important. It is not only the key to explaining inflation, but it is the context in which almost all business activity plays out. A good understanding business requires understanding this context. This book does a great job a laying out that context.

The writing style is down to earth and simple. The book is short, very entertaining (for an economics book), and has clearly defined chapters. The author has some good illustrations. I don't really mean the expected graphical illustrations-although it has some of them too. I mean historical illustrations: stories of how societies have used (and abused) money in the past. These stories not only buttress the author's arguments, but also anchor the lessons in tangible human drama.

I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in learning economics and/or business.

Even better than "Economics In One Lesson"

I think this is the best book out there to help quickly spread a basic understanding of economics and therefore how the world works. The knowledge and importance per page ratio is the highest I have ever read. Even better than Harry Browne's intro to economics from his famous first 80 pages of "How you can profit from the coming devaluation" .

Pages 13 - 90 are the heart of the book. That is 77 pages that in less than 2 hours can take your average person from unfortunate ignorance to economic genius compared to your average economics college graduate.

Somehow someone needs to reach Bill Gates and Warren Buffet and get them to read this book and put a copy in every american household. That would really be the most charitable thing they could do.

This was a great, great book. I have resisted reading his stuff for quite a while because his ventures are so commercialized and he still has a bit of that infomercial stigma in my head - but I was completely wrong. This book was gold. Great for beginners, great for the experienced.

About half the book is basic material that I was well acquainted with - goals, health, motivation, etc. Although I did get a few new viewpoints. The real benefit to me was the introduction to Neuro Linguistic Programming, or at least Tony's flavor of it. It was so effective, I was able to put it into use while only about halfway through the book. My wife and I were stuck waiting for our son in a dentist's office that had the air at about 60 degrees and I was able to program myself into feeling warm - the chillbumps went away, my skin warmed up - even my wife (who thought the whole thing was hokey) admitted it worked.

This is not a one time read, but a manual to be often revisited.

Incredible.

Everyone on earth, needs to read this book.

A lot of NLP tactics are used in this book, but hey whatever gets the job done.

What I've learned through this book:
- how to change my physiology to change my current state of emotions
- how to better manage my emotions and time
- how to build rapport with others
- to really know and understand what I want
- new techniques on how to completely delete bad thoughts
- so much other stuff!

your gonna love this book, it's basically just you that's helping you and in the end who else is gonna help.

A good friend of mine recommended this book to me with much praise. So I found it on amazon used section listed for $0.01, which came out to about $4 with shipping. You might be thinking who cares how much I was able to pick this book up for.. THIS BOOK IS WORTH MUCH MUCH MORE! If everything in these pages are considered and used, there is not a price that can be put on it.

Life would be so much easier if all the knowledge and principles in these pages where second nature at an early age. The good news is that you are here now reading the reviews and likely to pick this book up like I did and buy it.

Out of all the books I have read all my life this is definitely in the top ten. If you think the bible is important to read, I would put this one right beside it if not in a more accessible place.

Anthony does a terrific job organizing his writing and making his concepts clear and understandable. There are many guidelines, rules, and strategies that can help you improve your life and ready you for what is to come next in your life.

People pay ridiculous amounts of money to find the secret success formula for this or that or the next thing.. and its all here for the taking.. Heck, its likely at the library for nothing. But this book is like a bible for life. A bible for the mind and the way to do and achieve.

Keep in mind that no book is going to kick you in the [...] every day to make decisions and take action, you need a wife or a mentor for that :)
This is however is a fantastic place to start. You will be glad you did!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book "Unlimited Power". I am reading the book again and I have already successfully used some of the concepts and ideas. This certainly is not a book that you read just once but the insightful and useful information needs to be read again and again until it really sticks. In fact, one benefits a lot by practising what is being suggested say for 3 -4 weeks and see the results for yourself. Then maintain the new useful habit.

Anthony Robbins encapsulates the best personal development strategies and combines it with NLP to create quick change. This book will improve your entire life from reaching goals to rapport with others. "Unlimited Power" gives the utmost concepts on achievement, given by a very successful author, in a clear and easy to understand and follow style. I was very impressed with the ideas and information contained inside it which are very practical and powerful.

However, the book can only provide guidance and it's up to the reader to put into practice the advice and wisdom of this motivational guru.
It is overall an interesting book to read. This book is recommended as it has the potential to highly motivate, stimulate and help you focus your mind on meeting your goals.

I have actually been through a long period of spiritual chaos. I have owned this book in the past. I also owned many other books that are of this kind. This book is actually useless. The best thing to do in times of turmoil is to keep things SIMPLY. That is the best solution. Think in a positive way but not to the extreme end that is advocated in all these self improvement books which are actually self DESTRUCTION books.
For those who question my opinion, I have been severely depressed for over 6 years. I stop being depressed back in 2003. I am currently a psychology major. REAL psychology books are VERY different from these SHAM books.
I hope my review have helped someone. If you have books like this, you should throw them away.
