Secrets of the Entrepreneurial Personality
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-28
Are you an employee hoping to become an entrepreneur? If so, you should reflect on your own character and inclinations before quitting your job. Making the switch from employment to business leadership can involve learning new skills and adopting new attitudes. You will need to tolerate financial risk, live without a regular paycheck, and develop top-notch selling skills. And you will need to energize yourself with a sense of purpose that will inspire your employees, vendors, and customers. These are the kinds of issues raised by the authors, as they focus on the personal traits necessary for successful entrepreneurship.

This book is less about the nuts and bolts of starting a business than it is about how to prepare for entrepreneurship within your own mind. Even the relatively few practical matters that are mentioned tend to be explained in a personal way. In the process, some conventional business terminology is adapted to suit the authors' usage. For example, what the authors refer to as a marketing tactic might more universally be considered a unique selling proposition, or an element of product positioning.

Nonetheless, the authors give a great deal of good advice, from how to hire and fire, to how to discourage office backstabbing. The stories they tell are interesting and very readable, including an account of how they have encouraged their own employees to become financially independent, rather than remaining dependent on a regular paycheck. Above all, the authors' analysis of the ideal entrepreneurial frame of mind should be of great value for anyone considering abandoning steady employment to start their own business.

My cousin gave me this book on cd as a gift in preparation for my departure from the working world to full blown self employment. Despite what I thought were veiled messages from my cousin, I eagerly listened to this book. I'm not a big fan of books on cd because I have a hard time concentrating while just listening to them, but as soon as I put "Before You Quit Your Job" in I began thinking that I've read/heard this before. I've read Rich Dad, Poor Dad (and liked it) and I couldn't help but think that this book sounds an awful lot like it. I haven't really compared the "text" of the two since I've only listened to this book in the car, but I swear many, if not most, of the information and stories are repackaged from Rich Dad and possibly the other books in the series based on what others here have had to say about it. I don't feel as if I gained anything new from reading this book and I'm reluctant to read any of the others in the series after this. So, if you've never read any of the other books this might be worthwhile. If you have read the others, well, I don't know...this may be terribly redundant.

Another great book by Robert T. Kiyosaki.

I found this more helpful than some of his other more recent books. It's not just a reiteration of his old information. It goes over some key points of his first book but hits on many things and mistakes he went through in his many businesses. He then applies the things he has learned and puts them in this book in ways which anyone can understand. There are some insightful tips from Sharon Lecter in here too.

The book is spiritual yes, however religious NO. There is not one religion or doctrine centered in this writing. In fact, it is about your becoming and remaining connected with GOD. How we work with the power within not without (ie religions) is what makes the difference. The author centers on the life of the Christ not from a religious stand point but as a demonstration of what man is capable of. GOD didn't create Christianity, Buddhism, Judiasm, Islam, Taoism, or any other religion...man did.

I encourage persons reading these critiques to look at what others have written. Our lives are what we make it. Connecting with GOD as our source changes us from being a victim to an individual that has found and helps to create "Peace on Earth".

If you are looking to escape organized religions' continuous pajorative thinking and limits towards humanity, Eric Butterworth sums up the writting of Jesus the Christ into what was truly meant! We have all the abilities of Jesus...We simply have to remember the true meaning of Jesus' words. Eric Butterworth sorts through all the religious bias and man dominated thinking of our history, and explains in plain English the exact message Jesus was attempting to clear up about the Christ within us all!

Generous this book is...
In the Fall of 2007 I was in the process of implementing my very own non profit organization called The Pink Polka Got Org. and I really didn't have the managerial experience required to direct a board or my staff so I looked for a book that would help me. This book was very helpful and provided some good examples and details of keeping everything together. I thank the author for not making things too complicated for a young woman starting out fresh! Kudos****

This is a must read for all board members and potential board members for nonprofit organizations. It is very easy to read and understand. The outline format demonstrates the expert experience of the author.

I am chair of a nonprofit organization. I bought 2 copies one for my board members and one for the staff.

However, I am disappointed that I am not able to obtain a copy of it in a Spanish translation.

Easy to read but not too helpful

It's very easy to read, and rather comprehensive in the sense that it covers everything regarding management of the non profit. But it's not as helpful as I will like as it doesn't really go into details and the how to's and the examples and such. I would've liked more of that.

This is the best and most usable book I have found and recommend it often to others in the nonprofit world.

After reading all of the reviews here on Amazon I jumped at buying this book. I thought it would be the only source I needed, for now. However, as soon as I started reading it I was completely lost and I felt like my non-profit idea was a lost cause. This book appears to best represent large non-profits, or organizations that are already est.

The leading chp. discussed boards, not even helpful hints on building a board, just information on how to strengthen your board and how to give them clear duties. Huh, this was totally disconcerting for me b/c I don't even have a board! By chp 3 the author finally discussed something that I could use, except I was so befuddled at this point that I didn't want to continue. Why talk about the importance of planning or developing a plan in chp 3, shouldn't this come sooner? Why not break down what non-profits are to some ppl and how they have changed in the first few chps.? Why instead talk about boards and how to call meetings in the first chp.? None of this was particularly helpful for someone like me.

I think this is a great overview for ppl already have an organization but want to improve it. For people starting like me or starting small I recommend "How to Manage an Effective Nonprofit Organization." Now that book so far has been indispensable.

The College Solution is an amazing book that will save my family tens of thousands of dollars in college costs. I haven't found any other book that provides so many winning strategies to help find wonderful schools at discounted prices. Until I read The College Solution, I didn't understand that colleges are pricing their bachelor degrees like airline tickets. Only the uninformed need to pay full fare. After finishing the book, I'm not nearly as anxious about finding and paying for college for my son, who is a high school junior.

This book covers it all in the college search to include both the academic side as well as the financial side. Most college books focus on how to get in - this book teaches you how to pursue the schools that value your student's profile and rewards them financially for being a good fit for their college. The author goes into depth on how to find the best academic programs for the majors your student wants to pursue, and how to evaluate these programs and the professors. She discusses the importance of undergraduate research opportunities, leading to active student engagement, and consequently a more successful college experience. Lynn understands the financial aid process, and addresses both the FAFSA form as well as the CSS Profile, a much more comprehensive form that many private colleges use to dig deeper into the financial lives of families. Very few financial aid books cover the Profile form with such useful information in an easy to understand and interesting manner. This book is recommended for parents, students, high school guidance counselors and independent college admissions advisors. 'College Solutions" is the current #1 leader of the college search books, and highly recommended!

If your life needs a change, you dont have the budget for psychotherapy, and you don't have time to sit down and read a long complicated book, this may be a big help to you. I was able to pick up some ideas and use them immediately. A shift in my perception became simple, and quick to produce results. Some of our lives are too hectic to become a guru. We just need positive changes that will last. You could do this on your lunch break.

A very fine and practical approach for anyone!

I am a personal growth coach with a background in psychology, world religions and biofeedback. I work everyday with people who are trying to change their lives, which as you know is often a tall order. I've always admired Cheri Huber's simple, practical and effective approach and this book is certainly one of her best.

Although this book is based on Buddhist thought, it can be used by anyone of any faith. It approaches change from a perspective of non-judgmental awareness, unconditional self-acceptance and seeing that beating yourself is and always has been futile.

In addition to her fine presentation of content which is gleaned from a variety of areas including cognitive therapy, Buddhist thought and developmental psychology, she provides a structure. Specifically, the book contains a guided 30 day retreat which I think it EXCELLENT in every respect of the word... that's code for it really works!

This is one self-help book that is worthy of the name. I also recommend How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything: A Workbook, Be the Person You Want to Find: Relationship and Self-Discovery, Unconditional Self Acceptance and The Fear Book: Facing Fear Once and for All. In reality, all of Cheri Huber's books and other resources are excellent.

We're always looking for that external thing to save us and transform us. In Huber's book, we're aided in confronting the external things that have laid eggs in our mind and influence the habitual decisions that we make daily, including addictions, procrastination, and time management.

I've found that Huber's right on track -- it starts with being still.

Lots of short little self-motivating lessons from finding passion in your life to taking care of others, taking care of yourself, taking care of business, etc.

One of my favorite suggestions dealt with the constant urge to check e-mail, a big time-waster - Tesh suggests instead dropping down for 10 pushups. That's a great cure! Digesting a "lesson a day" will help brighten your day, and build better tomorrows.

John Tesh puts together a great book full of heart and inspiration to encourage anyone who reads it to take back the passion and purpose in thier life. This is a great self help book for anyone and just an all-around great read to keep at your nightstand. To be composed of so many segments, it really flows well and is tremedously readable and enjoyable. John shares many lessons from his own life and encourages others to turn up the volume on thier lives. The book is not preachy and is written in a very warm, conversational way. John has this ability to connect with his listeners that really carries through to print. I believe that anyone and everyone will benefit from reading this book.

I bought this review guide 2 weeks prior to the Border Patrol Exam for the sole purpose of "fine tuning" my speed and accuracy with the Practice Exams, and, unfortunately, I was very disappointed to find that it had too many errors. Explanations for the correct and wrong answers were vague. Many times they didnt make sense. Also, the spanish review was terribly written. Wrong use of verbs, sentence structure, etc. Its unbelievable that this "updated" edition is being sold as is. Save your money. Heck, for all I know I shouldve just reviewd LSAT Logical Reasoning questions. But I'm still glad that I passed with a high score without the help of this study guide. Good luck on your test! :)

This is a great book for those who want to pass the Border Patrol Exam. My husband bought this book one month before the test and our first language is Spanish. The Comprehension part of this book is excellent. My husband studied day and night in his free time out of work and I am glad to say it was not a waste of time. He took the test 2 weeks ago and he past it with an 82% and I am very proud of him because after all the time he spent studying he made it. Of course the real test will never be revealed but the examples these people give in this book are very alike. THE KEY OF ALL THESE IS TO STUDY HARD, VERY HARD AND TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF.

Poor editing

If you are a horrible test taker and know nothing about the Border Patrol you may find this book somewhat useful. However, if your test taking skills are adequate and you have already read up on the Border Patrol this book is a waste of money. I bought this book to use the practice exams to gauge my speed and technique. The book let me down terribly as there was no apparent editing of the tests in the back and they are full of errors. Once again if you are looking to get this book to practice with the tests it is a waste of money.

Way too many errors

If you know DON'T anything about the Border Patrol but you are planning on applying and taking the test, this book would not be a waste of money. If you already have some knowledge or understanding of the patrol, don't waste your money on this book. There are study guides and practice exams you can get for free online. Funny thing is, they are the same, word for word, as you get in this book (You get the tests available on line as well as a couple that aren't available online in this book). I bought this book because I wanted extra tests to practice with. (I am taking the Alternative Language Test) I took a break from studying to write this review because I keep finding erroneous answers, terms and gramatical rules in the practice tests. The ONLY tests in the book that aren't full of errors are the ones available for free on the CBP website (look for the links). I have not tried the online tests offered with this book yet so I can not comment on those. I can tell you, as someone taking the test in 2 days, that I am NOT impressed with the lack of attention to detail in this book. The ALT is not an easy test and this book is only creating frustration and making me feel like I am wasting my time and money. I do not recommend this book. Read "Patrolling Chaos" or "On The Line" if you want to learn about the Patrol. This book just touches on life in the Patrol. It's funny, attention to detail is the key to passing this test and this book is almost comical in it's own attention to the details. I took the approach of getting all the info I could to help me pass the test and I recommend everyone else do the same. Just be forwarned that this book will frustrate you when you work on an answer just to find out the book is incorrect. Not 100% wrong, but incorrect often enough to make me say that I will never buy another book from learning express (the publisher) again. This may be the best prep book out there but again, I am not impressed. Hope this helps.

You can't be happy in life, being an entrepreneur, unless you find a way to find meaning into you business. Venture Capital, post "the bust", is very hard to come by; finding meaning in your business will be a key component in providing you with the drive necessary to overcome the many obstacles inherent with owning your own business. VC's know this and want to see it when your giving your spiel before they fork over the cash. There you go; save your money. Define it and use it as your central drive in life and business. I was a little duped into buying the book. Babson College requires it for one of their entrepreneurship classes. What's with professors making you buy books that tell you what they (the professors) can tell you in just one paragraph?

After reading 4- hour work week by Tim Ferris, I am a big fan of NOT living the Deferred Life Plan. Tim recommends this book so I read it in a few hours. Other critics like to say negative things about what the book wasn't, but I am going to tell you about what it was.

It was a little slow in the middle due to all the story telling about the his life and experiences intermingled with a few characters he was currently dealing with.

It was enlightening on how the VC business works and what one goes through when deciding on who to invest in. My favorite quote in the middle was that Randy believes in the "Romance not the Finance." The bottom line has to be more about something than just making $!

But most of all it hits home for so many people who are doing what they have to do now, so they can do what they want to do later. Chapter 9: The Gamble is where it gets good. I found the words he uses to describe the differences of business risks and personal risks to be exactly where I am in life (28 with a great job that I could continue to make $, but have to compromise my creativity, work with people I don't respect, working for a company who's core values are different than mine, and doing something I don't care about). Or seek out that other career that is not so certain but is my passion and I could see myself doing it for life.

Thanks Tim and Randy for the words. I am a Whole Lifer Now!

Liked the author, enjoyed the insight into the world of venture capitalism but this book could have been an article in a magazine. It seemed to me like a long walk for a short pay-off. I get the point but felt like the author was purposely stringing you along for some bigger pay-off that did not happen.

This book is about self discovery moreso than business!

Randy did a great job of taking the readers through a seris of conversations that first started with Randy and Lenny than later to introduce Allison. Looking beyond the business venture and the excitement of starting a company, the few imporant points that caused me to refoucus were-What really excites me enough to want to do it for the "rest of my life" and Create YOUR onw meaning of success not what someone elses meaning of success.

I also like Randy's thoughts about defering life so you can chase a pot of gold IS NOT the answer. If you're going to work hard you may as well work hard doing something you love and that something should make a difference in the lives of others or IMO, it's not worth doing. That was a wake up call for me.

I am all about building wealth but I had to get my priorities straight as it relates to the path I was talking to get there! I was Lenny in the flesh. Thanks Randy, I appriate the book!

I read this last Saturday in one fell swoop and ended up with a very 'eh' feeling about it. On one hand, it's an interesting insight into his years as a CFO and CEO of various companies and the big lessons he learned, but on the other it's wrapped around a questionably authentic story about a stereotypical sales guy trying to get VC money. It ends up feeling about as authentic as Rich Dad, Poor Dad, that is to say, not at all. The biggest take away is 'do what you're passionate about', but there, I already said it, no need to read the book. His anecdotes about the early lives of the tech startup's he's been involved with were interesting, but not really enlightening. If I'm going to start a startup, I'm not going to be spinning off of Apple or bowing down to the VC gods of Sand Hill Road, and I doubt many people who read this book will.

If you're looking for something interesting on how to balance your life and work, this isn't it. The title is completely inappropriate, aside from his message about doing what you're passionate about. Go read the Four Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris instead (The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich), it has a lot more to say about creating life value.

This book would have been a lot more interesting if he'd cut the 3/4's about his daily routine and the story of [...], and instead focused more on how he went about bicycling around Burma or what have you.

I am still reading this little book and it is taking me longer than it normally takes for me to read other books because I want to savor every word. Yvonne's book has something for everyone and if one is willing to do the exercises your life can be changed for the better,or if you feel you life is great this book can help with your job, your relationships, your self esteem and many other areas in your life that could use some fine tuning. These types of books are NOT the solve all your problems overnight magic bullet but tools to help you as long as your are willing to do what they suggest.
I will tell you that at 56 years of age I am just now learning the difference in how negative and positive emotions affect the body.
As well as how our words and thoughts affect your life, your relationships, your career, and much more. I was truly amazed.
Thank You Yvonne for this powerful, easy to read and easy to apply book.

Wow!

Communication is 7% verbal, 38% tonal, and 55% body language. In a world of texting and email as the primary mode of communication, no wonder so much gets lost in translation and interpretation.

Yvonne's book will change your way of looking at communication and approaching life overall.

Worth every penny

This book is most valuable when you're 'in the the process' of starting/ running your line. It's a little piece of gold... keep it in your library for reference after you finish reading it. Of course, you're going to have to go out and navigate this industry for yourself, but this aptly named - survival guide - gives you a running start. It's worth every penny... buy the Expanded Version. One thing that I think you should pay particular attention to is the way she phrases things... ex. saying, "I'm a fashion designer" is for the public, not the industry... confidence is key to opening doors, but so is the way you communicate... design is a small part of the process... it's first and foremost a business to you and to your vendors... time and money are in high demand... FDSG will save you both and give you the opportunity to sculpt the way you think and work within this industry... good luck!

I've been in the business (www.glamajama.com) for almost five years now and I still found lots of useful info. Gives lots of pointers on how to set-up your clothing line's "timeline" for design, production, and launch. Follow their suggestions and you will have the optimum amount of time to build and promote your line. Also, it provides an overview for legal issues, marketing, and selling the line. This is a great reference tool for anyone wanting to know more about the inner workings of the fashion biz.

Excellent for High Schoolers

As a fashion design student, I was given this book before attending school by a friend. I read it all in one day and really appreciated all the information in it. But, I will say that I understood most of the business end of the information because I had already taken a college level business class.

The information in this book is very general and I would say it is excellent for someone who is thinking about going into the fashion industry and wants a realistic view of the process. Reading it before attending classes will give you a head start to understanding key concepts that will be covered.

If you already have a degree, I agree with one of the other reviewers, I wouldn't buy it.

This extremely well written book is enough to put you off even thinking of venturing into starting your own fashion label!! It is very well researched and obviously written by someone who is EXTREMELY conversant with the notoriously fickle and difficult fashion industry.I have worked in fashion at the design level as a patternmaker for well over 30 years and Mary Gelhar has put together a very informative manual.
It is exactly as it is, no matter what country you live in.
Take note anyone attempting to start your own label!!!
